Da Brat came out at the perfect time career wise. She was on a new label with a young, hungry and motivated CEO in her back pocket. As the years progressed and Hip-Hop went on yet another reconstruction her audience changed. There are too many artists that can attest to the climate of Hip-Hop going from sunshine to rain. Da Brat's first album still to this day goes crazy! She really got in her own way because she had the skills to sit amongst rap royalty, especially if you are only talking about women but she 100% held her own amongst men with no problems.

A lot of women in hip hop/R&B dressed like tomboys in the 90s. Da Brat, Mary J Blige, MC Lyte, Yo-Yo, TLC, XScape, Lady of Rage, etc. That was the style. Nobody knew Brat was into women back then and her sexuality certainly wasn't a topic or in question. Anybody saying they've known since the beginning is straight cappin'.
Nah, not really. The buying public has always had their suspicions but didn't sweat it too tough because her dope artistry is what led the way. However... it was an open secret in the industry that she was bi/gay, like a lot of other hardcore-looking rappers. Singers too. The 90s was the last decade where you could safekeep or were trained to hide that part of your life in order to have a thriving career. Nobody blinks an eye now.
Her stage name fits her because she's used to getting her way all the time when she was a child. Her first 2 albums from her are my favorites. The 3rd one was ok. When it comes to her going out and confronting people she has an ugly temper thus the reasons why she has had her prison stints! "Funkdafied(94)" was a fun party album. "Anuthatantrum(96)" was a blend of party, storytelling and smooth vibes type of album. "Luv, limelights and nightclubs(03)" like I said was just ok because the album just mainly focused on the nightlife. Would she have done better in this era of music? Lyrically yes, commercially no! Because in this time she can lyrically destroy the Sukihanna's, Sexy Red's ,🍦 Sipce etc, etc. But to try to just keep up with the sex appeal and gimmicky antics to stay around may not even be possible nor does she even want to follow their 🔵 print. If she kept her anger in check she would still put sh-t in the smash! Her lyricsim stepped up when she started doing songs with Missy Elliott. She can switch styles depending on the topic of the song. To me she's as legendary as the rest of the female pioneers in her day! To me she's one of the 🐐 s!
My mom used to play Da Brat’s “Funkdafied” album RELIGIOUSLY when I was a kid. I heard that album as much as I heard Snoop’s “Doggystyle” or 2pac’s “All Eyez On Me”. Classic album that I still love til this day as a 35 year old adult. Coincidentally my mom ended up in the same prison with Da Brat in the 2000s😂😂😂 she said meeting one of her favorite rappers in prison was a bittersweet moment lmao
I don't think it was necessarily a different Era. I think had she been consistent with her career. That would've been the difference. When she first came out. Da Brat was considered the female version of Snoop Doggy Dogg. Her videos, swagger, and calm demeanor were very resemblance at the time. How ironic that Snoop and Brat's first albums are everyone's favorites? 🤷🏿 Her consistency and discipline could've made the difference. If she was like Lil Kim? That would've been the debate right now. "Da Brat or Lil Kim?" I still listen to Funkdafied and the Give It To You (Remix) til this very day.
I felt Da Brat didn't have sex appeal like Lil Kim or foxy which hurt her commercial success. Lil Kim & foxy changed da game with their provocative dressing & hardcore lyrics.
Even when she did not have an album out, she still did verses on other peoples songs that were huge. Missy Sock it to me, Ladies Night, and Oh i think they like me remix. Her verses always stood out.
The B-R-A-T to me is still best rapper to drop since 94 to present. Bahamadia, may be the 2nd. I know yall will say what about Lauren! What about her? Da Brat became Jermaine Dupri’s protégé when she signed with JD’s So So Def label. She was on the same label as Kris Kross, so she wrote some of their raps for the duo. Funkdafied was definitely my favorite album from her. She should’ve been mentioned as one of the greatest female rappers in her generation. I hate that she did a prison bid for her role in whatever she did in her past. The long hiatus also hurt her rap career but she became an actress later on in her career. She was on the same label as Jagged Edge, Bow Wow, Kris Kross and many others.
She didnt write s&^^ for Kris Kross. JD wrote Kris kross first album. JD and Chris Kelly wrote Kris Kross 2nd and 3rd album. As a matter of fact, Chris kelly wrote some of Da Brat's raps with JD.
@dianevrules not true imma need for u to do better research jd and da brat wrote for them...da bomb is just one of the songs that she help write with jd
To me personally, the long periods between albums and Jail is what set her back. Plus even if she wouldve killed in this era, the 90s kept her pen sharp cause she had so much competition to go against back then. She still is to me my favorite female MC of all time.
Pretty sure JD wrote majority of Funkdafied which is why it was hard on biting Snoop and the gfunk sound. When the second album came out her style switched from westcoast laid back to Chicago rapidfire, so she definitely started writing her own (or with someone other than JD) Either way, Brat is one of the best female rappers to do it, just think around her time Kim and Foxy, selling sex and now Spice and Rei selling sex. She the most skilled out of majority of them.
