What Happened To "Bo$$" The First Female "Gangster" Rapper? Stunted Growth Music

  • Today’s feature is the interesting story of a rapper doing what she thought it took to survive in a world dominated by the male testosterone and a gangster image that was can’t miss at the time. To be exposed as a studio gangster or lying about who you were to create an image to sell records meant fatality in the rap game, and essentially that’s what happened to Bo$$. She was the first female rapper ever signed to Def jam, but soon dropped from the label after being exposed and it led to never releasing an album ever again for that and these reasons. R.I.P Bo$$

In '93, I was 15 going to therapy. A teenage Black boy from the hood was going to see a White female therapist from the 'burbs. One session, I brought the "Born Gangstaz" tape so I could play her "Deeper," which I felt articulated a lot of how I felt at the time, despite the obvious differences between myself and Bo$$. The therapist was blown away... Now that I'm a middle-aged adult, I feel that song even MORE. And it's genius how it is modeled around a therapy session. Bo$$ was way ahead of her time. R.I.P. I was about 11-12 years old when she dropped that album. Born Gangstaz was something we had in my household and I was definitely listening to it when I probably shouldn’t have at that time, haha. I’ve still got the CD and played through every song when I got a real moment to myself upon hearing the news. But, I’ve always said it’s one of those pieces in Hip Hop history that’s a heavily underrated classic. Despite what may have stunted her career, what you can’t deny or fake is talent. And, talent is something she very much so had. The bars were there, the delivery and flow was there. She went in from start to finish on that album. It was unlike anything we heard at the time, which is what I think made it so great. You know what I mean? She was going harder than most dudes on those records, LOL! The album was basically a movie with the entertainment it provided. But, she’s still one of those names that deserves greater recognition off of her ability alone. Still 1000 times better than pretty much every popular female rapper today; a lot of male rappers even. So, you’ve gotta put some respect on the name, Bo$$, for what she was able to bring to the table as an MC. And, always remember to spell it with those dollar signs. This was a surprising loss to hear about. Because her music definitely brings back memories for me. She had the potential for so much more and could’ve been a real dominant force in the game. Imagining if she had a 3-5 album record deal to hold her solid. That would’ve catapulted her career and legacy into a whole different stratosphere. You did your thing, though, Lichelle. Rest In Power, Queen👑🙏🏾

Ironically she was only doing what the boys were doing as well, faking a hard character.
She was smart about covering her face all the time because when it fell apart
who would really recognize her once she went back to the real world..

After watching this update I now remember the actual reason why she hasn't made anything musically from time to time, she had kidney issues. We knew she wasn't a "Gangsta", but she (like many Rappers) had the right people around her, to keep her good, when she was out and about. A Detroit Legend, and deservedly so. Her Flow was tight and she represented the City right. Rest easy BOSS, we know that you deserve more credit than you actually get.
