Well said--I could not agree more. I was lucky to make it on Shockwave, Great American Scream Machine and Vortex before they were torn down for dubious reasons...but I was always sad to have missed Orient Express. I am most impressed with how fast it traverses the batwing inversion. Normally the mid-course on these large-scale loopers is set right before that element and you crawl through it, but here you are flying--that must have been crazy intense.
I can't believe it!! I was just watching this ride cuz I'd always ride the orient and I found myself caught on film when the ride comes in- I'm the one on the left side with long black hair and my usual ecstatic grin on my face sitting next to my blonde brother-in-law!!! Is that for real? That's awesome! The Orient Express was probably the finest roller coaster ever built. The way it shows no mercy as it throws you into loop 1? But then it slows way down right before the second loop- it builds in fear like nothing on Earth ever will BUT The Orient Express roller coaster of Worlds of Fun. So anyway, I'm super happy for you, I'm happy you 'made it to youtube' although, (as has been proven) any idiot can film themselves for youtube account postings, anytime. But you? You're a fun person, I'm glad you're having fun with the video- Thanks to the person who posted it. I was sad the first time I went to Worlds of Fun but there was no Orient Express.
@@vealslab7757 lol, don't forget the brilliant design of the boarding area as well. Stand there in line watching train after train of people get dumped screaming into a black tunnel, while you debate whether to take the chicken exit.
1:12 As a kid, that sound going up the lift, I was like "what did I get myself into" once you was at the top and make that right turn just before the drop. that played a trick on your mental. This Roller Coster had Character... A true Classic, that can never be replaced... I wish they would rebuild it, to be taller, faster with a steeper drop...
I must have rode that coaster over 100 times! The interlocking loops were so unique, only one other in the world. It was so high, and very jerky lol. Riding at night was the best, as you descended into the tunnel through the dragon with red glowing eyes. The lifting chain made such a distinctive noise! The OE was probably the first upside down coaster ridden by many. I loved the Express. Thanks for posting, it is like stepping back into the best times of my life.
I’m 47 and I grew up at Worlds of Fun. Dad always had free tickets from work so we went many times every summer. Now I live in Virginia and take my kids to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. When we ride the Loch Ness Monster, those interlocking loops remind me of the Orient Express. I’m glad ol’ Nessy is 41 years old and going strong for a classic Arrow Coaster. I believe the Orient was built the year after Nessy. Thanks for the video! Brought back many memories
1999 was my first season working there; that ride had its derailing accident right as I was leaving the parking lot that night. I didn't find out about it until I got home
Brandie Karr and then my Leads gonna tell me not to tell anyone about it. (even though i never actually worked that ride; you gotta be 18 i was 16 then) well if the media spoke up its kind of hard to keep hush hush about it THEN
Watching those inverts swing as the cars flew through was one of the scariest things as a kid lol. God I miss this coaster. I don't miss the rocks they used for head restraints lol.
Julian Dale The Loch Ness Monster ride at BGW is the only ride with interlocking loops to this day...two other rides had it, until they were demolished
This was my first coaster! Every year I'd measure up because I wanted to ride so badly. Finally I was tall enough! It shook me all up but I've been an addict ever since. Point is.. Those interlocking loops were always funny and on the park map, it just looked like a big red knotted up noodle because... that was pretty much what it was! haha
AnnoyingMiner10 technically, there was another one that had interlocking loops with two separate tracks. They split the tracks so even tho the loops no longer interlock, half of the ride still stands today
The video looks like exactly how I remember it, with dropped frames, loss of color vision, and all that jerking around. It was always one of the craziest coasters I've been on, and like the Zambezi Zinger, the overgrowth of trees and bushes hid its true route, even while riding it.
I still remember the headaches of getting knocked around between those fairly solid padded headrests. It was always a headbanger when you exited that second loop into the twist. Headaches or no, I always rode it again. ^_^
My favorite coaster as a kid. The first drop was the best…totally stomach-losing the way coasters ought to be. Rough as hell ride, but that was part of the fun. Remember riding this over and over. Between this, Screamroller, Zambezi Zinger, and Schussboomer, WOF was a great place in the early 80s. I hear it’s all gone now and replaced with new rides. Too bad.
The Orient Express was my introduction to real roller coasters as a kid. Sure I rode the Schussboomer and Zambezi Zinger, but when this monster opened in 1980 I was changed forever!
That coaster was a big, bad mother in its day. I rode it a few different times during a few visits and I don't think I ever completely enjoyed it. I think I was just kind of uneasy rather than scared and I think the part that really got in my head was that simple curve between the top of the lift hill and that first huge drop. The curve was slow with little or no bank and unless you were in the front few cars you couldn't see the track in front of you and nothing beside you to the left but open air and a hell of a drop to the ground. It seems like the train was barely moving when it got to the top of the drop. The drop was a relief compared to that queasy feeling going around that damn curve.
That little drop followed by the slow curve before you got to the big drop is the single most memorable part of the ride for me too .... just the feeling of uneasiness as you say. It's like the whole thing was dragged out and it was almost a relief to hit the real roller coaster.
I recently moved back to KC my kids went to worlds of fun and I kept asking them about the orient express and they told me there isn’t an orient express! I looked it up online and see that it was closed down in 2003 I am extremely disappointed. So many great memories on that ride. REBUILD THE THE ORIENT EXPRESS!!!
Metal fatigue caused by wear and tear from the track caused an incident leaving 2 of the 7 trains dangling but nobody was hurt in 1999, I think the coaster continued to operate until 2003.
I go to WoF every year in the summer and the year i was finally tall enough to ride this it was shit down for good. I was so disappointed. Now I'm 16 years old and I've ridden all the coasters in Cedar Point and a lot across the US and have to say that coaster chasing is an addiction to put it mildly :)

I am still wishing that WOF would recreate this amazing coaster. Like, bring it back as a badass floorless or stand-up coaster. I can see it in my mind. Damn, wish i was a coaster designer!!! :)

Not true, a lot of these early era rides were tearing themselves apart... Literally... Look at how fast it went through those inversions, there's a reason why a lot of the older rides are so heavily trimmed and nowadays
When I was 15 I took the chicken exit.....I would ride it now or some other roller coaster but when I was young and lived in California and went to Knots berry farm it had a big loop and some woman fell out and got killed and when I heard that as a kid it put the fear of roller coasters on me for years...
One of the best coasters ever designed, and what a terrible loss. Should have been preserved, it was never obsolete and positively iconic.
I agree.

I absolutely love that classic Arrow Dynamics lift hill sound. There's nothing quite like it and they're slowly fading into the history books.
Pretty historic.
literally said that to myself as the train was climbing the lift hill.

Similar to Vortex at KI, but with the loops in a different non interlocking position, and the insertion of corkscrews.
Actually, Vortex was loosely based of of the orient express layout. Vortex was my favorite ride at KI for that very reason.

My first roller-coaster!
Great roller coaster
the station is still at world's of fun it houses a haunted attraction called lore of the vampire which came out in 2004
And it's used for Vampire Lore during Halloween Haunt, I'm pretty sure that's the same building, it's the one in the alternate path on the Spinning Dragons that is closed except during Halloween season.
No one died on the ride. they took it down because it broke down frequently and two cars derailed before the brake run.
I wonder if they'll ever put another roller coaster in it's spot? Because I read that even though people believe that Spinning Dragons and Patriot replaced it, the exact spot it stood on is still empty.
