I also really enjoyed Klarion in *"Justice League: Action"* ...
He appears in 2 of my favorite episodes, _"Trick or Threat"_ and _"Supernatural Adventures in Babysitting"_ , voiced by Noel Fisher
(aka Brainiac 5 from "Justice League vs Fatal 5" and Gogo Shoto in "Batman Unlimited: Monster Mayhem")
JL:A (2016-2018) is such a great show, it's a shame that no one ever talks about it.
It's one of Kevin Conroy's last "big" roles as Batman, and since he's in half the episodes it would be a shame to miss that performance.

Klarion is exactly what a selfish child with godlike powers should be like. Despite being potentially centuries old, he never stopped being a brat, his emotional maturity tied to his physical. To quote a line from the webcomic The Fancy Adventures of Jack Cannon: "Kids with godpowers. Children playing with nuclear bombs. You should be terrified."

Reminds me of why I'm into magical girls, for seeing initially nervous yet ultimately selfless kids (at most) having powers that indirectly make them covert messiahs to the places and peoples they encounter is something to behold, unlike the cut-and-dry Super Sentai/Power Rangers.

@@SerumLake I think it's more the difference between "liking Klarian as a character" and "liking Klarian" as a concept as well. Hehe you were unusually dismissive of him because "his story didn't have an impact" but in this day where kids get internet access and act unusually spoiled and dangerous... it's arguably one of the most impactful fears any parent has, that thier kid would end up being like him when they take out thier phone.
Similarly as I noted in another video, The writers of BTAS seem to have it out against anthropomorphic characters (or "Furry" if you will) as they always depict them as evil or the antithesis of what a good person should be, even in the most sympathetic cases (like Justice League's Cheetah who was ashamed of her feline form until Batman convinced her not to be hard on herself, ONLY to ultimately kill her off as a traitor because she kissed Batman, and the whole "Splicers" episode of Batman Beyond effectively making it sound like Furries were terrible people who couldn't be trusted cause they're practially drug addicts. ironically judging a book by it's cover, something the otherwise very left leaning WB is normally against. Kind of a shame they keep going that route in this series.... It took until Caped Crusader to finally decide "Maybe Killer Croc shouldn't automatically be evil just because he's a scaley..... as that seemed to be the only reason they made him evil originally, despite being a victim of bullying, he was "just evil cause he's a monster". and I'm sure Klarian is a case of "DOn't think because he's an 8 year old boy means he isn't wicked and unhinged.... At least the cat survives, but I do wish Batman used the mark on her forehead to help her no longer be a tool for evil instead of just making a "Hah, I told a woman to sit cause she's a cat" joke.....

Well, some redeeming quality: In a weird crossover with DC Comics and Loony Tunes which pitted Catwoman against Black Canary, alongside Sylvester and Tweety, Klarion ends up being a contributor for good winning out. Basically in a gathering of witches and other magic oriented DC characters a version of Witch Hazel enacts a wager of cosmic-level stakes between cat-kind and bird-kind: That Sylvester and Tweety must battle it out, and whichever wins everything cat or bird related in the universe will cease to be, be it biological, magical or thematic, hence Catwoman and Black Canary. At the height pretty much every cat and bird themed superhero and villain is conjured to duke it out, but Klarion ends up being one of the individuals who calls for this silly wager to end, namely because he didn't want to lose Teekl, even if he himself would not be affected by the wager.

  • @Holly-khore-levina
    @Holly-khore-levina 6 часов назад +15

One point regarding Teekl and their willingness to be grabbed, handled, and so on with Klarion is that it implies a degree of closeness. That even outside the arrangement of being a familiar Teekl views Klarion as their favorite person.
And honestly the way Young Justice and especially Phantoms went on to apply that is lovely. Showing that despite being a chaotic little shit with little regard for anyone else he adores his familiar like any good pet owner.

  • @The_Phantasm

I do definitely agree that the DCAU version of Klarion and his plan was quite simplistic and his overall demeanour and presence is very simple and at times irritating. I'm however a massive fan Young Justice's Klarion as an actual Lord of Chaos and the casting Thom Adcox-Hernandez I thought was pitch perfect and is easily the voice I always think for the character.

  • @jacktoma21

I love how by the time of Batman Beyond, Bruce admits he’s pretty much seen everything surrounding the supernatural and isn’t a the skeptic that people would think someone as logical as him would be.
Also I second that the Young Justice version of Klarion rocks. He has bigger ambitions and is more deliciously malicious. I did find him quite a weak villain in the DCAU for your listed reasons of being nothing but a brat with some power

It also reminds me of a theory I heard; the 'anchor' to keep an all powerful being in this level of reality for the order lord we know (Dr Fate) is a different person every time (a bit of chaos to balance the order) who becomes an avatar for the helm.

They don't need to nerf him DC has plenty of strong magic users. Just to name a few we have Zatana, Etrigan, Doctor Fate & John Constantine. There are a lot more so he has plenty of opponents that can give him a good fight at full power.

klarion becomes good if he is considered Dr Fates opposite. dr fate lord of order and klarion lord of chaos. makes both villians and heros. dark sied and dr fate would get along while klarion would hate dark sied. klarion likes joker, creeper, two face, dr fate would hate all three.
this allows klarion to be a pest to hero's villians alike since he could start rebellions and revolts everywhere (hawk & dove could be soldiers in chaos order war). dr fate could cause enslavement because it enforces order. klarion need to be fleshed out to be like Nezha legend. It's interesting how insular the supernatural things remained in a way. It would have been interesting to see how the New Batman Adventures rogues gallery would have acted or what they would have done if even for a single episode they were clued in on sorcery/sorcerers being a reality. Outside of Poison Ivy, who already is a meta human with powers. I can already hear Mark Hamill reciting some form of pixie dust joke line in my head writing this. And no, I don't mean Emperor Joker grade stuff. More like just the clown getting his hands on some minor magical doodads to throw into the ring at a moment when it amuses him. And the Joker and JL style snarky Etrigan being in the same room bantering as all heck breaks loose would have been very amusing, plus provide a good set up for quite a many gags. Not to mention how other rogues gallery members would react to and behave in the presence of Etrigan.

I think Young Justice did a better take on the character, but when I first watched this episode for the first time, I was more intrigued than anything else as this episode was my introduction to Etrogen and Klarion and I would imagine many others that haven't read the comics previously.
While Klarion maybe just a footnote in the villain's rouge's gallery, he was more a fun character that we were never supposed to be taken seriously. He was a child with magic powers with childish desires all because he was a child with magic powers.

Well in relation of batman. Klarion is what Bruse could have become. A super spoiled rich kid with infinite power. If Bruse was just a bit meaner as a child. Hell even in adulthood he could have become a spoiled playboy who leaves devastated lives in his wake.

Klarion can't be too complicated because with a guest hero that would make for too many big personalities for a half hour episode. It's the interaction between Batman, Robin, Blood and Etrigan that drive the episode.

I think the mystical villains were used as a vehicle to introduce Batman and Superman series’ fans to the mystical realm of DC as well bring in heroes like Fate and Etrigan to the audience. That’s why these villains have little depth and motivations compared to the main villains of the series.

I think klarion suffers from being limited by what the comics had done with the character at the time the episode was made and a lot of the good stuff came after it I think another character that he hasn’t talked about yet that suffers from this is Maxi Zeus The character in the DCU version definitely needs help and they just sent him to Arkham, which success rate is like one out of every 500 patients

Overall, I don’t think the new Batman adventures was nearly as poignant as Batman, the animated series, but there’s definitely room for villains like this and episodes like this in a very good Batman show. I also think this episode does a great job of showing Haun Batman, fights enemies, that obviously outclass him. He doesn’t come up with some Sherlock style 20 steps ahead, invention or punch their face in. He learns new information, pulls in expertise from relevant, analyze, and find a way to defeat his enemy without having to just overpower them or, as he did with kalibak in justice league, hold them off and make them a better target for his allies.

Funny you say "Klarian" isn't the type to speak to people and is very forgettable, but given there was a strict rule (likely) about the depiction of children as genuine villains, this may have been a case of the writers writing a story about a spoiled child who has all this power and is left unhinged and can NOT blame his parents for his behavior because he was the one who disposed of them to get his way. It comes at the perfect time of the internet where thanks to having home internet access (and maybe smartphones), a lot of kids have access to tons of information they never would've had when I was a child (where most of that magic sorcery stuff was fake, but more like a coping mechanism if anything), kids use the internet to cause serious real damage to thier own parents without realizing the impact of it all, like calling out hits on them on an unscrupulous website, or posting thier information on a public forum, etc and waht looks like them getting what they want, cake, destruction of property, etc, it's all very real damage that can't be taken back.
Just in recent time, I heard a story of several local kids who came across a homeless man and thinking they were vigilantes, started beating him up to death. This wasn't them trying to protect thier home from some stranger, as the police noticed based on the blood trail, they attacked the man first and he tried to escape them only to be blocked off by a few of them and then further beaten to death. then the kids quietly tried to run back to thier apartments where they lived as if to cover up the mess. But it was the security footage that caught 2 of the kids running to thier rooms, the age range was 11 to 15.... though the 11 year old claims he didn't attack the man, he did try to block the man from escaping so the others could beat him up. They eventually found the kids and tried them all as adults though while the community wondered how these kids could seriously think what they did was okay. It wasn't the parents. the parents had no idea their kids did this (and in fact, 2 of them got caught because when their parents found out, they immediately called the police and turned thier kids in and the ones caught in the apartment immediately surrendered as soon as they found out). It's very likely Klarian in this depiction is dislikeable to the extreme he is because he's a reflection of those kind of kids. the ungrateful ones who never seem to get disciplined "because they're a child" when people forget, you don't have to be 18 to take a murder seriously.... and sometimes, the parents are the biggest victim to thier own children, who have nothing to do but go to school and plot ways to ruin thier parents lives just because when they do turn 18 one day, they'll have to get a job and fend for themselves..... Very unfortunate....

Right on time after finishing up on Death Parade.
0:12: Some would rather avoid those otherwise great comics now though.
0:54: Hah, this another deveptive comic book cover worthy of Casually Comics?
Say what anyone will of the CCA, the puritanism sure led to later generations wanting to make better works to surpass the mostly obsolete corny tales of the Silver Age. Plus, in a way, the CCA did ensure some people worked for animation instead of comic book artistry instead.
Heh, Klarion in his first appearance somehow rings like an anime deity character isekai'd to the human realm. If anyone's well versed on the likes of Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld from Ah! My Goddess, you know what I mean.
5:24: Ooh, lore foreshadowing even if unintentional. Me likey!
7:11: A reference to Arnold Schwarzenegger and the classic Terminator original duology at the time.
7:18: Bingo with the Jack Kirby reference.
Interesting experience if one first started watching the DCAU with The New Batman Adventures. Tim Drake in this ep would be the perfect audience surrogate for them. Even moreso if said audience is accompanied by a DCAU veteran fan proctoring them with the ropes of the business, so to speak.
8:39: Missed opportunity to say *"The* Batman strikes!!!"
9:17: This flashy scene looks like it came out of old handdrawn anime.
Would have been interesting if, say, Klarion got freed by Mr. Mxyzptlk during Justice League Unlimited.
Addendum: Perchance we may get vids on the oft similar Greg Weisman's Gargoyles someday on this channel? Topics on Demona, Macbeth, and David Xanatos would be cool.
