    Best way to take off with a chopper with gear, a running takeoff. There were other helicopters in the area and increased rotor wash might have put those at risk. The pilot performed a taxi to departure, not a hover, then a rolling takeoff to gain transitional lift probably somewhere above 20 knots. Notice how the nose gear stayed down while the chopper was still accelerating on the ground. Choppers take less power to fly then to hover. This takeoff did not waste fuel.

      @bertvdlast 5 лет назад +1

      David Hertle. I was surprised that they took off in that visibility.

    • @BarbaricAvatar
      @BarbaricAvatar 5 лет назад

      I doubt it saved any fuel going by the amount of time there was between doors being checked, rolling to the runway, getting clearance and actually getting moving.

    • @joewilson941
      @joewilson941 5 лет назад +2

      @@BarbaricAvatar clearly they saved fuel... They taxied to the runway at Idle... Then opened the throttle upto high idle just before taking off, as they took off rather than lifting off!

    It’s actually an MI-17 looks similar to the MI-8 except the tail rotor is different orientation. Also MI-17 has a higher service ceiling and more powerfully engines.

    The only visible differences between the Mi-8 and Mi-17 are A) the position of the tail rotor (Mi-8 right side, Mi-17 left side), B) the shape of the exhausts (Mi-8 circular, Mi-17 oval), and C) Dust shields in front of engine air intakes for the Mi-17. Also Mi-17 has some improved armour plating for its crew.

      There were no planes on the tarmac. This is a common problem. Lukla is at the wrong altitude. In the fog zone. Fogs can last for weeks or more. And the helicopter can fly in conditions that are too foggy for the plane. That was how we managed to escape from Lukla. A brief window in the more serious fog that had persisted for ten days without a break.

      The red bags he was moving around were the parts and spares that fell off the interior cabin area of the helicopter. You can see him sorting them into 2 piles for passenger cabin parts and cockpit parts. Then we see him making a walk around of the aircraft to ensure no parts fell off of the exterior and also, and most importantly, that the rotor is still indeed affixed to the mast head.
      This is common practice for Russian helicopters. Honestly i'm surprised he didn't fill up more of the red bags with parts/pieces.
