      Those details are from Legends and haven’t been canonized yet! The ancient Mandalorians were much different compared to their modern Mandalorian counterparts that most Star Wars viewers are aware of. First of all Mandalore the Ultimate and most Mandalorians during that era were of the Taung species who had resentment because their ancestors were driven off their original homeworld Coruscant by the Zhell who were believed to be the ancient ancestors of the humans. The Taungs were barbaric and brutal warriors and their tactics were savage. The Taungs faced extinction but were able to preserve the Mandalorian culture by adopting humans and other species to carry on their way of life. By the time of the old republic humans were the dominant race within Mandalorian society and with the New Mandalorians (pacifist) holding political power up until the Clone Wars, the warrior culture kind of softened and those who still embraced their historic roots were nothing compared to the brutality of the Taungs. I wouldn’t say that the modern Mandalorians that fans adore are the good guys but I would say they are more neutral and likely to be more self-serving which may lead them to take sides of the protagonists or antagonists depending on the situation.

      @@DIEGhostfish I don't think the Mongols are quite the best comparison since Sparta had a more deeply ingrained military culture to their society that was persistent and consistent to the point that most facets of Spartan culture existed for the purpose of supporting the warrior lifestyle. Indoctrinating kids for decades, granting women the right to compete in sports just to make them stronger to bare stronger children, to enslaving an entire city state so the Spartan citizenry can focus on war rather than farming.
      Plus Sparta and Mandalore both have not entirely deserved heroic images to them that's owed mainly to pop culture romanticism. And like Sparta the Mandalorians have a pretty mixed record of victory that's impressive in story but less impressive actually on paper.
      The Mongols were a bigger empire builder than Sparta which was insular and isolationist but in the later days of the classical world Sparta did flex a lot more on their neighboring city states.

    • @brandywinebridget
      @brandywinebridget 10 месяцев назад +3

      I disagree. The Children of the Watch were ultra-orthodox traditionalists, but they were so tiny that they never really had the chance to commit the atrocities that come with Mandalorian warfare. We have no real way of knowing what Din would do in a war, since his way of life so far has only really given him opportunities to show the “good” side of Mandalorian ethics. Depending on how Bo-katan’s story goes, that may change.
      Even in the Crusade era, their war crimes weren’t really on the personal level-The massacres were usually either deliberately goading the Jedi to fight (unnecessary here, because their enemies aren’t trying to avoid conflict) or collateral damage from indiscriminate bombing. It was never personal, or done out of simple cruelty. There hasn’t really been a *reason* to commit war crimes-Most of his interpersonal interactions have been entirely faithful to Mandalorian morality. Sacrifice for duty’s sake is very Mandalorian, as is choosing clan loyalty (in his case, the Children) over other concerns, short of being called to battle by the rightful Mand’alor.

    I think part of the issue regarding how the Mandalorians went from being viewed as barbarians to this noble warrior culture, even long before The Mandalorian came out, was because of Karen Traviss and the Republic Commando novels.
    I originally started reading the Republic Commando novels back in the day because I loved real-life military history and I was growing up with the initial run of Clone Wars-era content before Revenge of the Sith was released, so if you've seen the Dark Horse Republic comics or the Republic Commando video game, you know how grounded and dark the Clone Wars could be.
    So when Traviss' novels were coming out, I snatched up the first two (Hard Contact and Triple Zero) because I wanted to learn more about the Commandos and how the GAR functioned.
    Both novels were great, but by Triple Zero I noticed how much of a love affair Traviss seemed to have with Mandalorians, since many of the GAR's training sergeants were Mandalorians recruited by Jango Fett, and two of these instructors, Kal Skirata and Walon Vau, became main characters starting with Triple Zero.
    It was definitely interesting seeing the Mandalorian culture dynamic explored within the rigid confines of the GAR, but I remember thinking how, by the end of Triple Zero it seemed like this was less a story about the Clone Wars and more about the Mandalorians.
    I read the third novel, True Colors, and that was the last of the Republic Commando novels I read. It was still a decent story, but by now much of the focus wasn't on the GAR, the Clone Wars or military sci fi in general, but moreso on family and relationship drama, and above all else, how superior the Mandalorian culture was to everything else, and how the Jedi (not the bureaucratic Old Republic or the political Jedi Council, but the Jedi in general) were no better than the Separatists or the Sith.
    By the end of True Colors, I remember how Skirata was basically adopting all the clone characters and their girlfriends into his "family," and how all the clones and even a few of the Jedi were planning to desert the GAR and the Republic and start their own colony on Mandalore. After that I lost interest in the novels, because it felt more like a soap drama about Mandalorian recruiters instead of a series about the Clone Wars, which is weird considering it said friggin' A Clone Wars Novel on each of the Republic Commando covers.
    I do have to credit Traviss with expanding on what Mandalorian culture was like, and I think it was her novels that first created a lot of the Mandalorian language, but for whatever reason I think she was truly in love with Mandalorians with the amount of time she spent preaching the nobility of the Mandalorians and how flawed and crappy every other single organization in the Galaxy was.
    Personally, I think a lot of Star Wars fans were interested in Mandalorians just like I was (because let's be honest, a sci fi warrior culture is still badass) but they became absorbed in Traviss' love affair with Mandalorians and started over looking all those "minor" faults the Mandalorians had, like the many genocidal campaigns the Mandalorians waged against the Old Republic. Which is weird, because a lot of fans love Revan and yet they seem to ignore the very reason Revan went to fight in the Mandalorian Wars: The Mandalorians (at least at that time) weren't noble mercenaries with a code of honor, they were monsters who needed to be stopped.

    • @collecter343
      @collecter343 10 месяцев назад +7

      I get what you mean, the Commando books were more soap opera in the setting of Star Wars than military sci-fi novels, did not change at all in the proceeding books. But the viewpoint that the books extolled about how everyone sucks except Mandalorians has to be taken account of in the fact that the POV characters in the books are clones who are literal slave soldiers being treated as family by a Mando, 2 jedi during a time where the Order isn't working out for the best for everyone involved, and an Old Mando who has some deep biases against any form of government.
      The later books (should have been shown in the first 3 but whatever) show how Mando culture has plenty of issues(mostly infighting, cause Mandos are Mandos' worst enemies) that the POV characters gloss over cause of how overly protective they would feel about their culture. In any case yeah the books made the Mando way of life very appealing in terms of family for those with little to no family of their own. Mando propaganda for them not being as bad as they were during the Old Republic but cultures change depending on the era and the Traviss books were taking place when Mandos were looking for more people.

I'm very happy with Sabine being trained. the Mandalorians can be the leaders and the guardians that the Jedi and the Republic could never be. they are needed now.

    The Mandos are cool, definitely.
    Basically, they are much like almost every nation in our world: There are factions who embrace the evil (Death Watch, Neo-Crusaders, Demagol), some who don't (like, you know, the New Mandalorians) and various other sects that walk the narrow line between both. Plus, they have a lot of dirty chapters in history.
    The idea of leadership is an interesting thing, both in canon and legends. Your video on the destruction of the Darksaber has already stated it well: The Darksaber encouraged infighting over the question of leadership which would always pass to the strongest in combat. Plus, the owner of the Darksaber always has to watch out for challengers. At least in most canon appearances... and even if rightfully owned by combat, it's still encouraging splits, as shown in TCW - After Maul had won the Darksaber, Bo-Katan rejected his rule and split from him with her Death Watch sect.
    It has much similiarities to the Sith with their individualistic ways.
    In Legends, it's the mask of Mandalor which any Mando could claim who was lucky enough to find the corpse of the dead Mandalor first - Which implies any candidate is considered worthy of leadership. Even after Mandalorian factions infought over the question of leadership when Revan hid the mask, it's still a much more community-approached aspect: It was expected that those wearing the mask took a new name, just as Canderous Ordo became "Mandalor the Preserver". Even Mandalor the Ultimate, despite being a war criminal, knew strength in combat wasn't everything - As he lacked the skill for organizing, he tasked Cassus Fett with reorganizing the Mandos into the Neo-Crusaders.
    To challenge the reigning Mandalor for the mask, simply for the sake of leadership, was seen as dishonorable.
    Din Jarin's tribe is a more interesting thing, though - The armorer is considered the tribe's leader. A quite interesting take on leadership: As weapons are part of their religion, the leader is the only one who can produce said weaponry and armor. The one who knows the history and stories as well.
    As hardly anybody knows the art of making armor and weaponry, there's less risk of infighting over the question of leadership, too. Keeping the tribe more stable.

    I think the Mandalorian philosophy is more "the strong WILL rule the weak", that is in keeping with what Pre Vizsla said before being killed by Maul. He was accepting about what happened (I think you have another video about that). The actions of both Din Djarin and Boba Fett (in the Book of Bob Fett), who in live action are our POV Mandalorian characters, show them frequently not seeking to rule (well not always) but seeking to teach others to not be ruled. Same with Canderous Ordo telling the farmer they should have fought to protect their family. Same with our Din Djarin's group took foundlings (the weakest of all) and taught them to be Mandalorian; if they were seeking rule by the strongest they wouldn't seek out the weak and train them to be strong.
    The philosophy I think Mandalorian fans take from them is better said as "the strong will rule the weak, so you better learn to be strong lest you be ruled (by the weak)". When The Mandalorian (the TV show that is) came out after a few episodes it became a hit within the American gun owner and pro-2nd Amendment community (which I'm a vocal part of). They bought "Weapons are part of my religion" t-shirts, there was even a lawsuit where a pro-2A group defended a student's right to wear one in school when the student was told to take it off. If you talk to these people you'll find they support the idea that YOU should learn to defend yourself, that YOU should be dangerous so you're not ruled. That is why I think the Mandalorians have become such a hit.

    I'd have to argue that in most cases, mainly chronologically earlier depictions, Mandalorians are pretty bad, but in their current form it comes down partially to specific members and a lot is down to their intention. Looking at the newest rules and guidelines they seem to follow, the only major issues are the keeping your helmet on Din's people do, which is just physically and socially unhealthy, and the strong focus on combat. The helmet thing is obviously bad, but it's bad for health rather than being an evil thing. The combat-seeking on the other hand can be totally evil, totally good, or somewhere in between depending on how they approach it. If it's just fighting for it's own sake, that's terrible, unless done like boxing is as more entertainment. It could be done instead as the common bounty hunting we see more, which will vary depending on which contracts are taken and how the Mandalorian handles them. There is one way Mandalorians could be almost a purely good group, if the fighting was focused heavily on the purposes of protecting innocents, hunting down criminals and other bad guys, and generally bending their violent tendencies toward such goals that reduce worse violence and improve the lives of normal people. If they act in this way, Mandalorians effectively just become a really cool knightly order, treating their religion the same but aiming it's tenets at generally good activities. They'd be similar to Dragonfable's guardian order or the Vigilants of Stendarr in The Elder Scrolls, only that they seem to actually enjoy fighting rather than view it as a tool to do those things.

    Say Geetsly, how about a video comparing Canon Mandalorians to Clone Troopers and the same for Legends? I personally like to think there is a difference between Clones and Mandalorians, but I wonder if I’m just being too optimistic. At least in Canon it’ll probably be a positive difference in favor of the clones. In Legends it’ll probably be a negative one since Mandalorians helped save the galaxy against the Yuuzahan Vong while Clones in that continuity had far fewer qualms with the Galactic Empire and in fact also didn’t like the Jedi Order and Galactic Republic.

He’s a jaded and hard man who was made even more so when he found that the “Jedi” ordered the creation of a slave army when he first met the nulls. His POV is mandalorians first everyone else whatever because he doesn’t have the whole picture. He’s a semi reliable POV character who doesn’t have the bigger picture, but still makes decisions based off of what he knows and feels. He’s a flawed character. Also the mandalorian lore in republic and imperial commandos is leagues ahead of, “this is the way”

    I think that most mandalorians seem to interpret the creed differently (this also heavily depends on their time/clan). Some, like Ordo, take it as the need to conquer and for the glory of battle. Hearing him talk about his war stories and the dialogue options that come with it bring a really awesome perspective for the mandalorian's belief at the time. Others like Din Djarin seem to take it as a religion or way of life without the need for genocide. Overall I think that its no different than any group in real life, largely thanks to different author's point of views, and that each mandalorian should be judged for their own actions and interpretation.

  • @PaulGuy
    @PaulGuy 10 месяцев назад

    I think the problem here is treating the Mandalorians as a monoculture. Going back to the Klingon example, for a while, they were treated the same way, as a warrior monoculture. But as _The Next Generation_ went on, and especially during the run of _Deep Space 9_ and even into _Enterprise,_ they were portrayed far more fully, as a culture that had been taken over by the warrior class, but that was based around the concept honor and service, not simply about combat.
    Coming back to Star Wars, the _Clone Wars_ series started the examination of the Mandalorian culture that continued through _Rebels, The Mandalorian,_ and _The Book of Boba Fett._ This did the same for the Mandalorians as the Star Trek series had done for Klingons, show that they weren't simply a monoculture, and that they had many competing philosophies about how to live.

    I hate to disagree with the Geetsly High Councill, but if The Clone Wars taught me anything, besides never go to Umbara with Krell(lol), that it's okay to disobey you're superiors sometimes, so I have to disagree with you saying the Mandalorinas aren't good guys, at least specific people and groups in it. It's the same thing with the Clones. You did a few videos a while back where you said none of the Clones, be it units or Commando Squads, were good guys, which I also completely disagree with you on, and its the same thing here with the Mandalorians. Are all Mandalorians or Clones good guys, of course not, there are plenty of ass whole Mandalorians and Clones out there from the likes of Death Watch, those that caused the Mandalorian Wars, The Coruscant Guard, Delta Squad(unfortunately), Alpha-17, and so on, but there are also plenty of Mandalorians and Clones out there that as far as I know have done mostly if not entirely good in their lives and done very little if anything evil, like Rex, Cody, Fives, Echo, Din, and Sabine, even Bo-Katan has started to be better person it's debatable whether shes done enough good to make up for the bad stuff she did when she was part of Death Watch so you could argue if she should be a good guy now are just neutral but even she is trying to be better and be a good leader for her people so they'll have a future. You can't say all Mandalorians or all Clones are evil and not good guys, you can say some, or a good chunk, or specific groups and units are bad guys, but some of them are good guys through and through.
    You know, the funny thing is, this can actually be related back to my comment from yesterday's video about that Battle Cato Neimoidia fanfic I just started working on. Because I have an idea involving the burning of the grub hatcheries, which I learned about from one of you're videos, Geetsly, so thank you for that, you teach me so much about the Star Wars universe, and what I've learned from you has allowed me to improve and expand my works. I truly appreciate all you've taught me, Grand Master Geetsly. Anyways, so for the burning of the grub hatchers on Cato Neimoidia, I plan to have a more evil Clone squad or unit like the Deltas do it and after they've already done a decent amount Obi-Wan, Anakin, and their good Clones will stumble upon what they've done and naturally be appalled and get into a whole debate and argument with these evil Clones are their actions, thus showing that there are both good guys and bad guys in the Republic and how the Clone Wars are slowly eroding away all the good and leaving the evil unchecked.
    Also, to play Giritina's advocate here, warrior clans are not inherently a bad thing, there just another way of life for certain people. Some people just can't live normal mundane lives, they want more, more excitement, adventure, and combat, wanting all this is not inherently a bad thing, they are entitled to their own happiness, and as long as they don't hurt innocence and try to force their way on others, it's when their ways of life start causing problems for others or they try to force it on people against their will that they become evil and must be stopped for the good all. So the Death Watch and the Neo Crusaders are examples of those whose way of life are hurting others and thus must be stopped because they are bad guys, but then you have Din's clan the Children of the Watch that seemed to just be living their lives mostly away from others and not trying to actively harm others there okay and can live their lives how they want because their decent people who aren't harming people with their ways, unlike those beasts in Death Watch and the Neo Crusaders who were monsters and had to be stopped.

    Something to note is that both the Empire and the Sith Order maintain very similar ideologies to that of the Mandalorians: They're obsessed with the idea only the strongest should rule. When it comes to the Sith, they believe that the only thing that makes you worthy of being part of their order is your willingness to do anything within your power to... get more power. Being cruel to your enemies, being indiscriminately violent, or even outright betraying your fellow Sith is lauded as fundamentally goods as long as you are strong enough to carry home the win. And if you don't, you're not worthy anymore, and are disposed of like refuse. The Empire is quite similar in that regard. In the Imperial system, what matters most is your willingness to suck up to your superiors and your willingness to betray your comrades. I think the Commandant from Star Wars: Rebels summed it up best when he stated that only strength prevailed in the Empire, and when it came down to it, you could only look out for yourself, to the detriment of everyone. Except your superior officers, of course. And as it turns out, both the Sith and the Empire are also obsessed with war and militarism, possibly more so than the Mandalorians, if you can believe that. This is probably why recently, the Mandalorians (some of them, at least) have been depicted as good when coming up against those like the Sith or the Empire: Their systems are perfect representations of what happens when the Mandalorian way of life is taken to its absolute extreme, and some (emphasis on some) Mandalorians don't like what they see in that.
    But that's just my interpretation of things.

    I love how some 40K fans flex on the Mandalorians, how they say that Space Marines are like Mandalorians but more grittier and bloody, then I remember the time when Mandalore the Ultimate launched a war that made the Horus Heresy look like a bar brawl, where entire worlds were nuked and entire sectors were razed by the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders, whose sheer force of brutality and carnage make the Black Templars look like cute anime kittens.
    Imagine if you will, an entire faction whose armies are clad in beskar power armor and energy shields, wielding souped-up blasters that can damage small ships or disruptors that bypass enemy shields and disintegrate enemies painfully. Imagine that their version of a Bar Mitzvah is learning how to ride a Basilisk War Droid into battle, dropping from orbit and destroying entire bases with sheer firepower. Imagine their soldiers engaging in melee and killing Jedi with naught but vibroswords and the strength of their training. And imagine how they're the kind of nutcases that forces the Light-Side Republic to rely upon a Machiavellian Dark Jedi war criminal whose tactics mirror that of Grand Admiral Thrawn, just to annihilate them.
    THAT is the true face of the Mandalorians. What we see now in TV are just the sad, dying remnants of an army that once made the galaxy piss itself in fear. Kind of like what the Enclave or the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout would be when compared to the USA prior to the bombs falling. If the Neo-Crusaders went into the 40K galaxy at the height of their power, they'd annihilate damn near anything outside of Chaos, and the Chaos gods will be drinking well due to all the blood, carnage, and fear that the Neo-Crusaders would spread. They'd throw Abaddon's useless ass out of the club and replace him with Mandalore the Ultimate as the new agent of Chaos.

    I once came up with a character who would become the second Mandalorian Jedi raised by the Mandalorians but trained by a female Twilek Jedi. In one part of his story, someone who didn't like him or his people criticized them and even asked why he wouldn't call them out for their crimes. His answer was "Even though I know of the amount of blood on their hands throughout the thousands of years they were around, how can I ever hate the people who gave me a home amongst them?"

    The Mandalorians are not the "good" guys, but they are not the "bad" guys either. They are the "real" guys. Out of the three most powerful factions, the Mandalorians are the most "human." The Jedi and the Sith represent two extremes, while the Mandalorians represent a more middle ground between selfishness and selflessness in a galaxy where not having the strength to protect yourself is an invitation for exploitation at best and genocide at worst.
