US PRESIDENT: "Joe Biden needs money!" Major donors and party friends turn away! Trump is delighted!
Resistance to Joe Biden in the debate about his presidential candidacy is growing. The 81-year-old US president is increasingly losing support in the Democratic Party and among donors. According to a survey, 56% of the party supporters questioned are in favor of Biden withdrawing from the presidential race. Nancy Pelosi, an influential Democratic leader, has opened the door for such a withdrawal by subtly distancing herself from Biden.
Biden is currently fighting for his candidacy for the presidential election in November. His age has raised doubts in the USA as to whether he is the right candidate for the Democrats. Since his unfortunate TV duel against Donald Trump, he has had to put up with questions about his mental fitness. Biden himself reacts defiantly to the criticism and vehemently rules out dropping out of the race. The final press conference at the NATO summit in Washington will be an important test.
There has been no open rebellion against Biden within the Democratic Party so far, but more Democrats and supporters are voicing doubts about his candidacy every day. Democratic MPs in contested constituencies in particular fear that the dwindling support for Biden could also harm them. More serious than the public criticism of some parliamentarians is the subtle distancing of Nancy Pelosi, who is indirectly questioning Biden's candidacy.
There are also increasingly critical voices from Hollywood, traditionally a liberal circle of supporters. Film stars such as George Clooney and Rob Reiner are openly calling for Biden's withdrawal. Reports of major donors making their financial support dependent on a change of candidate are putting Biden under additional pressure. Despite these challenges, Biden continues to try to win support at fundraisers.
Polls show that Biden is slightly behind Trump and the gap has grown since the debate. In the crucial swing states, Trump has been able to widen his lead. Biden is trying to portray himself as a fighter who will not give in so easily. Whether this will be enough to overcome the growing criticism remains to be seen.
