- Today we share how no one warned us, full time cruising was not what we expected.
We have considered retiring on a cruise ship multiple times and each time we learn something.

Hola… I am living full time on Villa Vie Odyssey residential cruise ship since Sept 2024 and loving every moment. It’s a 4 year cruise going around the world to over 140 countries. It includes all the cons (laundry, internet, drinks -lunch and dinner, gratuity). Still not tired of the food. It is an amazing life style traveling without having to unpack.
I can have fun on any Cruise line. But I agree if it's going to be long-term on the same ship you need to do your research and find the best fit for you and your budget.
Would like to hear your thoughts on healthcare/dental care and also travel insurance.
One of the things I do when I'm booking anything is to read the reviews from people. Anything that says 'boring', 'too small', 'not enough bars' etc ... THOSE are the ones I'm more likely to book.
Princess has self serve laundry at a fair price ($3 load from our last trip). On Norwegian Cruise lines we have Platinum mid range status and get free laundry service plus several free upgrade restaurants.
The cruise line you choose is critical in making the experience a good one if cruising 15 days and longer.
Also, when you go on cruises 3 months or longer, they usually have laundry, drinks and soda, and gratuities included in the fare. They are aware that a longer cruise has extra issues.
Fastest internet at sea sounds like the finest cuisine at sea! Both bold boast don't hold up!
Picking a cruise line and Itinerary are probably the two most important things you should do first. My husband and I tend to use cruises as a way to see other countries but we are okay with not much in the way with entertainment as we still seem to still enjoy our cruise even if it is on Holland America or Viking which doesn’t have a lot of in the way of entertainment. Where the entertainment for us is visiting the other countries. Holland America offers laundry service by the piece, by a bag or unlimited service, to me well worth the price. Viking has launderettes where there is no additional charge, laundry soap is included but you will have to do your own laundry. Dining options can be limited, but if you think of it as if you went to the same restaurants on land, would you expect the menu to change? Some of the cruise ships do change their menus according to where it is sailing so if you keep sailing in the same area may be the reason meals have not changed.
Like you stated for your positives, I like that we get on the ship, unpack once because our hotel is sailing with us, not dealing with the hassle of finding places to eat. I like the fact that a lot of research is done for me on what excursions are available in ports. I like that it’s a vacation for me as I do not have to clean bathrooms, make beds, figure out what to make for dinner or cooking it. 😊
Fun fact: the Public Library in Eden, NSW is set up for cruisers 😂 Fast WiFi, AC, a sink to refill your water, and they’re super welcoming :) I had to spend a chunk of my port days uploading and doing errands.
Still haven't convinced my husband to go on a cruise but I love watching cruise videos. Even though we would never retire to a cruise I find this information helpful. Ironically the Holland America cruises appeal to us more even though you've mentioned a few times you didn't like them. Don't think we are waterslide people, more the library type. Lynelle said she liked it and will try the line again so anxious to hear more if she does.
The internet must be a ship by ship analysis. I was just on the Prima for 2 weeks and it was the best WiFi I ever had. I had it for multiple devices, unlimited and streaming.
Isn't finding a place to do laundry an issue while traveling full time? It would be great in a BnB where it is on-site, but even in a hotel, you would either have to buy from the hotel or head out to find a local laundry mat. I took a 16 day Princess cruise last year and we had to do laundry twice. Pick a sea day, and time accordingly. less than $4 a wash and dry so I didnt think it was too bad? Thanks for the video!
We have cruised a total of over 150 days but nothing more than 14 days at a time. This year we will be doing 24 in a row which we are looking forward to it. A plus is that our loyalty level allows for free drinks, some free laundry and internet. Concerning the Internet, we have been able to zoom without issue 98% of the time. Uploading to our cruise channel is another story... It's hours on end to get a medium sized file uploaded! Thanks for your thoughts and experience on this topic!!
My aunt and uncle did this for a little while .The problem was they started looking like the people from the movie Wally.
I love sea days multiple days
Another one from the messed-up-collar series. 😋
I just did a quick search of your channel to see if you've done one on wifi/internet service and I don't see one. Considering that your business is dependent on your ability to upload videos, how do/did you handle it if the internet connection wasn't strong? What is your backup plan? Thank you for sharing your journey(s)!
I think I could only do it if I switched ships and locations every 14 days (maybe every 28 days). I couldn't just stay in the Caribbean and keep going to the same few ports.
🏆🏆🏆
Holland America is for old people. Their lectures are very good, but other than that, there is nothing to do. The entertainment sucks or is non-existent.
We were offered a 7, 14 and 30 day free cruise on HAL. Took 7 and 14 and while on 14 canceled 30 day. Both agreed we would jump overboard if we took the 30 day. Hubby says, get the drink package or take a book because there is nothing to do. We refuse even free cruises 😴 !!
While I hate Musk, but what about having a Starlink antenna?
