    So Emile gets Andrew during a cutscene, Falco takes out Leon by himself, and I'm pretty sure Wolf killed Pigma. Only Emile could get that lucky doing that poorly against Star Wolf.

    Little fact about this planet. It’s name is actually a mistake. It was supposed to be called Fichina (yep, the same snowy/icy planet from Star Fox Assault) but some programmer must have had the name Fortuna stuck inside his head from previous star fox games because that’s what it’s called in this version. The 3DS version fixed this naming issue.

    Star Wolf is definitely the gatekeeper of this game. Their AI is much more advanced than any other mooks in the game and they're much more durable. However, once you mastered the Arwing's controls, they all go down very quickly. A good metric of when you're ready to go on the harder routes is if you're able to beat Wolf on Fichina consistently.
    Also, Fortuna in this game is supposed to be Fichina. Fortuna was a jungle planet in Star Fox on SNES, not an ice planet. They fixed that mistake in the 3DS version.

    As someone who has played Star Fox 64 a lot, I've learned something new: Shooting a member of Star Wolf *right* when you run out of time nets you zero points: Emile didn't get a single point from shooting down Andrew (what a glorious last-minute "UNCLE ANDROOOOSS" btw :P)
    But nah, Star Wolf can be really rough for someone playing the game for the first time, especially since your only previous all-range mode experience would have been against the Corneria boss. Better than my kid self, who would actually *die* to Star Wolf a few times (that, or run out of time).
    I also used to believe as a kid that shooting all of the satellites that give you silver rings decreased Star Wolf's defenses. Something dumb my friends told me, and being ~7 or so, I believed everything (much like how Pikablu could be unlocked after beating the Elite Four 100-1,000 times in Pokemon, right guys? :P)

      I actually had the same experience. Initially, I focused more on shooting things than looking at the tutorials and thus missed Peppy's advice on somersaulting, which is instrumental for beating Star Wolf. Plus, the instruction booklet for the game was lost. Luckily, when I got the 3DS version, I was older and knew what to do, and the somersault became a lot easier to do with the D-pad.

    So, how Falco killed Leon wasn't some random act by the AI. If you save a wingamte once from their Star Wolf rival, they'll evenutally start chasing down that rival and eventually kill them. I had this happen to all my wingmates during my own LP of this game a few years back and it was the most surprising thing I ever saw from it (and I've logged over 200 runs into this, at best). To make sure it wasn't luck happening, I tested it again afterwards and the same thing happened between Slippy and Andrew.

    • @TheJokerAkaCirque
      @TheJokerAkaCirque 5 лет назад

      Wait really? I always assumed that in certain scenarios the ally CPUs just actually actively help you fight and that's why occasionally they get meaningful takedowns. I didn't realize that their competency is actually triggered based on your gameplay. I've pretty much always gone for saving my allies and so I don't think I've ever had a Fortuna run where my teammates weren't at least mildly productive in attacking their counterparts. Almost always get at least one Star Wolf member dead who I didn't personally kill.

    As for the next stage, you actually do get Slippy back right before the boss. It's because of what happens with that boss if you take too long fighting it. It's the only time in this game that any of your teammates return in the middle of a stage if they were down in the stage before.

    Look, Star Wolf is his team, not his name.
    Please tell me either Jon or Tim corrected things and said it’s Fichina. Fortuna’s a lush green planet (how lush and green depends on your continuity). Fichina is very much not in any of its appearances.
    0:18 Seeing the map here reminds me that places where you see little red explosion orbs are locations of conflict between the Cornerian and Venomian armies. Nothing more than a detail as far as gameplay’s concerned, but I always liked helping the Cornerian army out even if it meant skipping out on Aquas, Zoness, and Sector Z.
    Thank you Past Tim. Fortune has been confirmed to be a typo, especially since the 3DS version does call it by Fichina. Sort of a pet peeve of mine when it comes to this game.
    It is one of the fights, yes. However, you don’t get to see the countdown until it hits either 1 minute or 30 seconds. The first part I believe is also time based so if you’re aiming for medals, best to get shooting down those enemy fighters. Judging from the length of the video though, I don’t think Emile beat them, at least not without losing a life...
    2:09 Yeah, you have about a minute and a half to kill as many ships as possible before Star Wolf shows up.
    Look out, it’s Star Wolf! For whatever reason I remember as a kid being able to skip their intro and shoot down Pigma almost immediately. Star Wolf’s basically glorified Venomian fighters from a gameplay perspective. They’ve more health, they know how to somersault, and they know how to chase. Each member of Star Wolf has a select target they go after (provided they’re in the field. If not then their target is Fox). Pigma will hunt Peppy, Leon will chase Falco, and Andrew will torment Slippy.
    Not as much as Pigma is. “Daddy screamed reeeeal good before he DIED.”
    3:46 Even though he and everyone else in Star Wolf can do that too.
    4:45 Actually you still want to win it because Star Wolf gives you Hits, and Hits means more shielding for your allies and possibly another life for you. Then you can choose to go to Sector X if you want.
    5:20 At least on Venom II. I forget if they show up at Bolse if you beat them on Fichina. Also they still fall for it, but they won’t give you as much time to get your shots in as the Wolfen II’s are far more maneuverable (a trait that carries over to the Wolfens in Assault: better maneuverability than the Arwing at the cost of braking power).
    6:33 Wait, isn’t it supposed to read Mission Failed?
    Geez, only 7 hits...wanna rethink about rethinking Emile being Slippy and not Fox, Guys? Emile really should’ve gone through training if he’s this terrible at All-Range. Bolse (or Venom II if he can somehow make it there) is not going to be kind to him if he can even get that far in this attempt.
    7:05 Technically incorrect, and this is the exception to the rule. Slippy does show up mid-mission as he’s that good of a mechanic and wanted to help Fox out...unfortunately anyone who’s played through Sector X and was too slow with the boss understands why Slippy suddenly shows up.
    And for being on the Easy route, I find Sector X to be much much more difficult than Solar. The place is a space graveyard, very dark place (except in the 3DS version where the lighting is so much better)...and it very well may become the site of one of Emile’s graves too during his SF64 experience...at least, that’s what I’m betting based on his performance.

      @StarkMaximum 5 лет назад +2

      There is no "Mission Failed" screen, every mission ends with either "Complete" or "Accomplished". It's an odd choice (since Complete doesn't actually imply you did well, just that you finished), but for most of these levels, the only real failure state is Fox dying (which means you obviously have greater problems than failing the mission).

    • @Rexaura888
      @Rexaura888 5 лет назад +1

      StarkMaximum Maybe I’m thinking of Assault and Zero, and maybe it states Mission Failed instead of Complete on the 3DS. Anyways the track is titled “Mission Failed”, and it technically is a mission failure since the objective was to reclaim their base from the enemy. With no base to reclaim, can’t exactly call that completion or an accomplishment, can you?

    • @StarkMaximum
      @StarkMaximum 5 лет назад

      I stand by my argument of "Completing a mission doesn't mean you succeeded" but yes by all metrics it is a failure. Based on this game calling this planet Fortuna it seems like there's a lot of weirdness involving the text of this game.
