  • The fifth piece in the “Tokyo at Night” series of watercolors paintings.
    I again used one of my own photos I took near Kagurazaka while walking late at night with Kana. The small dark alley seemed interesting but in the end I decided to paint the view one can see from the dark end of it.
    Technical stuff:
    Paper: HOLBEIN Waterford natural 300g/m cotton paper
    Sketch: Mitsu-bishi Hi-Uni pencil grade F
    Line: COPIC Multiliner SP 0.5mm
    Colours: my main 48 colour Schmincke set
    White details: Dr. Ph. Martin’s BLEED PROOF WHITE
    東京夜行5枚目です、ここもカナと一緒に神楽坂のあたりを歩いてて見つけた、暗いところから見た明るい路地です。

    your work is always so incredible. it makes me feel happy and at peace and watching your videos always makes me feel so inspired to paint. i had a break from art to focus on schoolwork and because i had managed to burn myself out so coming back here and watching you paint after not doing so for a while feels so refreshing. i cant wait to fully dive back into painting when this school year is over

    This series particularly astonishes me for drawing "at night" sceneries seems to be so difficult! Picking the right colors when the reference image has little (sun)light is very counter-intuitive to me. Congrats on that one, and I can't wait to read your comics =)

    You should do the giant Gundam in Tokyo for one of your night paintings! I'd like to see how you capture the neon lighting and wet reflections of that immense statue!

    I've been wanting to ask this and keep forgetting- what do you use to tape your watercolor paper down? I don't think you stretch it, you don't use a lot of water, but I've seen you get really good consistent masking, no warping, and no problem with paint running or tearing? Thanks....

    • @mattjabbar
      @mattjabbar  6 лет назад

      vfxartds I tape my paper to a thin board using the Nitto masking tape (it also allows me to do neat, straight edges in the painting) as you said - I don’t use so much wet techniques so I can get away with no stretching.

    • @vfxartds
      @vfxartds 6 лет назад

      Thank you! The tapes that I use stretch and warp a bit as I tear, must be more careful ;-)

    Thanks, and a really good video as allways

    • @TheAlkhemiaStudio
      @TheAlkhemiaStudio 6 лет назад

      DJ ENGHOLM try the basic Cotman from Windsor and Newton! It's really good 🤗

    • @richieray6619
      @richieray6619 6 лет назад

      Sennelier or Schmincke's STUDENT GRADE 24 colors set. They are superior to cotman, in my opinion but you cant go wrong with any of those three.

    • @francoismahr
      @francoismahr 6 лет назад

      Hello, I would start with few colours let's say 12. At the beginning student grade Is the best what ever brand you choose. I started with only two colors to understand light and shadow: it was ultramarine Blue and burnt umber or might be raw sienna I don't remember. Use watercolor paper, let's say not under 180 gsm. Ortherwise your paper won't be able to soak the water and will start to wobble.

    • @richieray6619
      @richieray6619 6 лет назад

      SuperZorgh Its Burnt Sienna.

    • @richieray6619
      @richieray6619 6 лет назад

      The best student grade paper that I know is Canson Montval and Strathmore 400. All are 140lb/300GSM.

    • @mattjabbar
      @mattjabbar  6 лет назад +2

      João Miguel Aliano yes, I do it when the lines are done in pencils but the black ink lines here work well without Photoshop magic :)
