Painting the Tokyo "Metro Guide" cover

- Cover illustration for a magazine called “Metro Guide” being distributed thought metro stations in Tokyo from September 2017.
Number of copies: around 1 000 000.
This edition is autumn themed so I tried to make my illustration fit the contents with the colors and atmosphere. I used the Jindaiji temple and the shops that surround it as an inspiration for the setting.

Wonderful piece, as always ! I really love the atmosphere of this one, Autumn really is a beautiful season. The reflections on the pavement and all the shadow details really help to give an even stronger atmosphere to the overall picture. Thanks again for sharing this video with us :)

Hello! I love your artwork and it's become an inspiration for my own pieces. Just one quick question, how to you keep the pencil from mixing with the watercolor? This is a constant issue wit my work, having the pencil start to run when I apply the paint,
Melissa Cicero I don’t use too soft pencils. I scan the pencil picture and then superimpose it digitally on the finished painting or just add some black lines on the finished painting when I want blacker lines

How can I watercolor in photoshop or clip studio paint like this? any suggestion will be helpful
I don't think you can easily, no with a lot of effort (making custom brushes, textures and such) and knowledge about how real watercolors work. There might be also other, better suited apps for this.

It really depends on the work and the publisher but I could support myself doing few of such commissions per month. But thanks to my Patreon support and to people that buy my goods etc. I can do only the ones I feel like doing and showing to you.
May I ask why you use the thin napkin that you have your hand rested on? What is the use for it?
With the napkin it’s harder to smudge the pencil lines when I rest my hand on them. I still have to be careful though.

Did you use tracing paper on top of the iPad?? And then how did you transfer onto the painting paper
No, I printed the sketch I did in Procreate (only the lines) and traced it to the watercolor paper using a tracing table (strong LED one)

i live in indonesia and art schools here are sucks they dont even teach anatomy
btw i really" like this cover you made the color the details is just perfect i can almost feel the temperature and the atmostphere
you should consider making an animation movie i think it would be very successful
I did not go to a proper art school, and the university in Japan was also mostly about self-study so I think that I'm mostly self-thought.
