  • In the first moments of Nar Shaddaa, the exile is approached by a beggar. Kreia has something to say about it. What exactly was she trying to teach you? Abstain from charity? Make them earn it? Some people became frustrated, and thought that she was just trying to annoy you. These are my thoughts.

The thing about charity is that they rarely address the root issues causing poverty or any other issues you’re trying to fix. they treat the symptom but not the disease causing it. You have to address the condition that allows these such issues to exist, if you wish to make a difference
Throwing money to everything doesn’t address the issue of why people need it in the first place. That money may fix the symptom for a short while until it runs out and its back to square 1

My mother has an administrative job in the police (not an officer), and since i was young she would discourage me from giving money to beggars, telling me they are often racketeered and the money ends up in the hands of criminals. She got the idea to give them food instead, or buy some bread if they're specifically asking for food, she sometimes carries the cheapest candy bars, or apples, for that purpose. If they ask for food, or are happy to receive it, they are probably honest.
One time last year i decided to save a bit of money by not carrying my wallet with me for a week (just my id and bus pass) to reduce impulse purchases, the very first day i ran into a man who asked me to buy some food for his daughter, she was sick and they didn't look like beggars, i assume he spent all the money he had on him on her meds. Such a thing hasn't happened to me since, and it made me think about many things.

My father once told me a story that he gave some money to a woman with kids once and he went on his way and thought nothing about it. Later on, he saw another woman, who had been begging for money with a bottle of alcohol in her hands and children crying with hunger. He looked on in horror and realized that his act of charity had possibly brought on misery to others. He decided later on that he would never...ever give money to people ever again. He would instead buy food for them and hand out food to whoever needed it.
I have followed my father's example in my own life with some interesting consequences. I had a man ask me for money once for food. I told the man calmly, there was a fast food restaurant close by and that if he came with me...I'd buy him something to eat. He walked away from me and went to someone else asking for money.... umm.... yeah....he wasn't as "hungry" as he claimed he was.
I did this again to another person and I had a man get angry with me and said, I need some money....for food. Not food.
And this was after he asked for money for food. I shrugged and said...the extent of my charity was to get him food, not money. If people are really in need they will accept whatever you offer.

I think i had a similar situation. I donated money to a organisation "autism speaks" in hopes to help people that struggle with autism
it was until i decide to look up and find out how bad autism speaks really is. lets just say they don't know as much about autistic people. Compared to a psychologist that studys autism for a living. and to realise that i funded an organisation that never let autistic people speak about how they feel about there condition.

That's exactly what I got from Kreia as well. She wasn't saying that you should never be kind or charitable. Her point is that you have to be *SMART* about it and she's absolutely right. This is why Steven Universe is such an insufferable protagonist. He's an ignorant fool who gets constantly taken advantage of because he has no *NUANCE* to his kindness. He gives it too freely, too unconditionally, and this sets him up for constant manipulation.
It's why Navy was able to play him so easily, and reclaim her ship simply by _asking_ for it, and Steven, ever the unthinking one, fell right into the trap, because she was on "good behavior" long enough for him to buy her false narrative.
This is also the story of the frozen snake. When the charitable person unthaws it, the snake repays him by giving a vicious bite.

Always a treat to watch paragons like him in fiction... albeit not for sadism purposes, more like how long they'll last without breaking all while seeing them learn some additional lessons that might change a lot in the very end.
Of course, the tale can be twisted in some unique way. In one take, the farmer just helped the snake get food by giving it, cut past rough vegetation, and even lifting it up high ground. By the time the farmer ran out of food, the snake then bit him; however, as it turns out, they're on a faraway desert, and the farmer actually lured the treasonous snake so to try and protect his own folk from the snake after all this (bear in mind, the farmer might be deemed as the lowliest of the bunch in a community of farmers in the tale), thus making sure that the snake, though initially triumphant, ended up losing the rest of the conflict in the process.

My church seriously experienced exactly what you're talking about:
Several years ago, around Halloween, a man entered the church and told the pastor, my grandfather, that he was in desperate need of some money. Out of charity, my grandfather gave him five dollars, then the man thanked him and left.
My mother, the church's bookkeeper at the time, sensed that something was afoot, and told my grandfather she wouldn't be surprised if he was on his way to Circle K that very moment. Growing suspicious himself, my grandfather exited the church and walked over to Circle K, which is just down the street. Sure enough, the man's vehicle was there. My grandfather was about to go in, when the man himself came out and ran right into him. In his hands were two Mountain Dews.
We've been careful of charity ever since.

When I played this game in my youth, this scene changed my life. Not in some immediate way, but it planted an idea I had never before considered. At that age I had never really questioned altruism or charity, they seemed to me to be obviously good things. This scene and others in the game asked me to properly consider the consequences of such things, and so I did.
In time, I came to question the effectiveness and motivations of large charity organisations. I came to question the sincerity of anyone for whom success in their stated goals would render themselves obsolete. I came to question what happens to the surrounding businesses in an area where you continuously give crap away for free. And most of all I came to question what it does to a person if they keep taking charity.
Kreia says it in the game. When you give someone charity you in some sense rob them of a chance to gain strength. I've come to the belief that charity is something akin to a mildly poisoned meal. If you are desperately starving, eat it. But know that even as it saves you, it also hurts you. And if you keep eating it again and again instead of seeking your own source of sustenance, it will ruin you from the inside.

0:14 Fun fact if you (somehow) don't have five credits the option to give him five credits is replaced with an option to give him food.
2:22 This may be because the game was rushed but I do find it interesting that the same person who robs the guy if you give him credits, also tries to help him up if you threaten him, showing two sides to this average refugee and how the average refugee will react to the different things that happen to other refugees.
4:17-4:52 Couldn't agree more since that applies to me (although it's more avoiding feeling bad and less trying to feel good).

Have you ever heard the phrase "useful idiot". It's often an accusation against marxists/communists but it's meaning is much more broad.
A useful idiot is a person who supports a revolution because they are unhappy with the current system.
But what they don't realize is that, the new system, may be overall worse than the current system, in ways they can not imagine,
and worse than that, it may be impossible or almost impossible to return to the old system.
When I was growing up, I often heard the slogans "Think positive" and "Be optimistic".
"Being optimistic" is why people are deceived by con artists.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimism_bias
If people were less optimistic, then maybe there would be less victims in this world and less foolishness in general.
If people demanded evidence/reasons more often, instead of trusting authorities, then maybe con games would be less successful.
By con games, I mean all political/economic/social/religious/etc con games.

Yes, I think a healthy degree of pessimism (or rather skepticism) prevents people from being deceived.
I had a debate with a collegue at work the other day on that principle. I argued that a better educated populace would solve the majority of the problems of Democracy snce well informed people make better decisions, but it is in the interest of most politicians to keep the populace dull so better to appeal to rash decisions rather than well thought ones. They keep enough of the population educated to drive business but not enough to upset the status quo.
Might be a bit crazy but its better than the alternative - that there is a limit to the average intelligence of our species due to people just being too lazy and not caring enough to be educated, rather than not being able to due to limiting factors (political, financial, lack of high quality teachers etc.)

Very interesting point of view about something so, in principle, pure as altruism. Normally, one would think that you are doing good, that through that act of kindness, something is being repaired or improved. As if a kind of healing act.
But to see that there is consecuences, real and harsh, in those acts is very impactful, especially as you said if not done with observation and calculation.
In some way, were are lucky not to have the Force in our reality. Because if it is hard now and there are consecuences about this, imagine if there was a power that would send echoes and change events. I suppose thats why Kreia is weary about it. Among other reasons, of course.
Thats my thoughts, at least. Once again, thank you for this new chapter of this fascinating series of videos. Looking forward to the next! :D

You know, some might argue that there is a force, or forces in our world that manipulate our actions. If you believe in a God, than that would be it, and it's sentient. If you don't believe in a God than the force can be whatever teachings were past down to you by your parents and people who were around you, and those aren't sentient. I may be wrong, but I heard about someone who is an athiest, but he calls Jesus Christ his "pale companion". Kind of like that song. But the reason for that name is 1. Because he's dead and 2. Despite being an Athiest, having grown up catholic, the teachings are Jesus were burned into his mind and he can't help but end up having a behavior that can be linked back to those teachings being thought to him. Revan went to Kreia to learn how to leave the Jedi. Because he wasn't trying to leave the order, he was trying to leave the way they think.
However, echoes do exist in the real world, as you know, and they go by many names. Everyone produces them and they are infinite. Sometimes I wonder what kind of echoes I've created by making these videos.

I had trouble understanding her rationale prior to this video and thought “refusing to give a man 5 credits due to the chance he MAY become a target seems like a flimsy excuse to not do someone a small kindness” but the Anthony Bourdaine situation is a perfect example of the dangers of impulsive altruism. You should do a video about whether you side with the refugees or Exchange in terms of the outcome of the future of the refugee sector and Kreia's reactions its a great part of the game for me. Edit love the use of the Far Harbour DLC soundtrack. Honestly i had a boss when i was younger in a restaurant who would offer the homeless people who ate out of the dumpsters in the back that if they were truly looking for good food that they could work off the cost of the meal of their choice, usually it was like 3 hours dishwashing or doing other prep and he said he offered the chance because he thought that some will probably not take the oppurtunity, some might do it once and move on, but some might relish the chance to earn something for themselves by someone who would treat them as a human being and he would give you a job if you really tried and had a good work ethic. I guess for him he felt that at least he was giving an option over nothing. He was a very charitable person, but wasn't someone you could just walk all over, guy had a temper, but his heart was in the right place, it didn't work all the time, hell one guy robbed the restaurant, other guy stole booze, but we had a few people who really liked the idea of being given a chance and once they started he'd help em find living arrangments and that kinda stuff.

Saying racism is lack of nuance itself is lack of nuance. In case of blind racism, maybe. Word racism itself is loaded and not conductive to any nuance. When we talk about prejudice and not "racism" there is plenty of nuance because it can stem from multiple source. Dismissing generalized statements (stemming from statistics available or collective experience) is in end of itself dismissing nuance. You need both macro and micro lenses for full picture.

I pose a question related to your musings about hate being less energy consuming, and I do agree its the easier path. For what is easier? To destroy? Or to create? To damage? Or to repair?
But as I see it - To pick the easy path, where the fence is the lowest, will not grant much rewards. Sure you may save some energy in trying to understand others, but in the long term, this will only cause more harm than good. Ultimately hate does indeed lead to suffering. Actions have consequences, and to pick the easy option, which is to say: Hate? Well, I think that is an easy enough outcome to spot, should one just take a look at what is going on in the world at this very moment. But as I do love examining my own arguments, on the flip side, as actions have consequences: You do have the danger for not taking the easy way under the fence. Less tolerant peoples aggression, being subject to the anger and ire of those who's hearts are ruled by hate, as well as using quite a lot of energy in trying to expand your horizons and understand.

Although at the end of the day, hate is an emotion we all feel and for good reason. It can be motivating. Hating entire groups of people you know nothing about is pointless. There's nothing to be gained. But hating war, warmongers, or acts of injustice, has proven to have some positive effects in the world.

@@PapitoQinn Yes. Hating war, warmongers, and injustice is only wise. But with such things there has to be caution, and some consideration into who is truly in love with those horrible things, less misunderstandings can lead to one being angry all the time at everyone. Jumping to conclusions too rashly, and quickly about their motivations, and slinging heavy words at them far too easily.
Many emotions make for good servants, but very poor masters.

TBH, in my headcanon, my Kreia always had Jedi Master robes and a double bladed lightsaber, along with the power to regrow limbs like a Gand. She then got stabbed twice by Surik, and then instead of having her right hand severed, it is her left hand *again* and then she gets struck down by Surik, who later took Kreia’s place.

But that's not inherently political. Anarchism? Politically speaking you can argue that libertarianism's dangerous extreme will inevitably result in anarchism due to the weakened government. I would say that an individual can do with his money whatever he wants but if one is talking about the money of the collective, i.e. tax payer's money, then the approach of giving fishing rods instead of fish must be assumed. Also, the do-gooders of the world often forget that actually many (not all) of those living in poverty are merely reaping what they sew. They are bad people, lazy, addicted to drugs/alcohol, ignorant, etc. Helping them is wasting valuable resources. Same with bailing out failing business', like GM- bad enterprises must fail so that good may thrive.

    • @PapitoQinn
      @PapitoQinn  5 лет назад +10

I kinda disagree. If there's tax payer money involved then that means there's an organized government. It's the job of the government to provide people with the kind of fish that can only can only be provided on a systematic scale. This in turn allows people to go fishing. Otherwise you just have a government that takes your money and provides nothing in return. As for the homeless, I guess you could call me a do-gooder, but I don't actually know these people. I don't know their problems or what brought them to this point. But even if they're lazy, addicted to some substance or ignorant of some information or skill, none of these, in my opinion, make them "bad" or evil people. Maybe not all of them will be receptive to it, but since we're trying to have a society, we should try and help them. The alternative would be to give up on them, in which case the homeless population as a whole can only increase.

@@PapitoQinn I do not think the government is well-suited for charity/welfare. No matter the system, it very quickly becomes exploited by parasites and provides a parachute for the less fortunate that prevents them from facing reality and fighting for themselves. They do not want to or see any reason to leave the nest, to use the bird allegory.
It's your autonomous decision to share your resources with someone, whatever their merit, but it is not ethical nor moral to force (government) people to give their wealth to lost causes or simply something they vehemently oppose. Why should a communist pay in taxes to bail out a huge corporation like GM? Why should a christian conservative support planned parenting (i.e. abortion advisors)?

    • @PapitoQinn
      @PapitoQinn  5 лет назад +6

@@bendakstarkiller1270 Why should they? Because we're trying to live in a democratic society. It can't work if everyone pays their taxes but simultaneously decides directly where their money is allocated to. Because then they might as well just keep their money. But in that scenario we'd be living in an anarchy state where there is no government. If the government can't take care of it's own people, than no one can. A majority is supposed to be able to decide the paths its governments take true democratic process. If an administration implements these social policies, there will be people who will try to defraud it, but the counter to that is competent law enforcement. I can't agree with your bird allegory. We both know that people very much enjoy the freedom of independence. I know that conventional wisdom would dictate that people would just sit around, but people eventually do something. I was in a situation like that once. Everything was taken care of but I just got tired of sitting around. I think human beings are generally like that. As for the outliers who mooch? It's worth having a few of those than the alternative.
