Best looking GQ Patrol on RUclips, tasteful mods. Love the Lift and those wheels are lovely. It still looks original. Enjoy it but look after it and know when to stop modifying, don't go too far! Less is more sometimes, and you have such a clean vehicle to start with. Good job!
What a worthwhile dyno session! Eric not only seems to know his shit, he is a really good teacher as well. Before and after driving comparison must be chalk and cheese! Look forward to seeing how she goes out on the tracks now...
could have done a run with the hat installed but no intake pipe to tell if its the pipe/filter or the hat (I think it might be the hat). However the torque gains down low is really the gains that mattered for offroad and around town driving.
Well done Dan! My 2 bobs; the intake shroud over the gas regulator is the culprit - reason I reckon is there is more turbulence at that point (rather than the tube). Regardless that is an excellent result - fuel economy should be substantially better too now.
Best thing I did was ditch the LPG. the weight saving alone were worth it plus was finding it annoying to find LPG when remote as it’s not common anymore. Plus todays prices of LPG it’s cheaper to run it on petrol. A GU 90L rear tank bolts straight in and even the hoses are correct for plumbing it.
It doesn't help that the taxi industry has entirely abandoned LPG, plus with Holden and Ford no longer much of a 'thing' in Australia now, and therefore they no longer manufacture cars here, there's no more LPG-only vehicles being made which were briefly a thing, there's very little incentive for servos to continue to offer LPG if next to nobody is buying it.
what a good bloke eric loves his job look how excited he gets most dyno tuners these days don't go into any details don't explain stuff all , just take your money eric makes your car reliable and teaches you all this information you need to know a credit to him well done and you did a awesome job an the old gq keep the vids coming have a soft spot for gq's even tho i drive a landcruiser haha
Great vid, the restriction is probably not the pipe (an LS runs the same size and makes 400hp) but more likely the shrouding, I read once the clearance after an opening should be equal to or grater then the opening radius as to not restrict flow.
Not sure about other states but in vic you have to have your car inspected an approved after you remove the gas system for insurance an rego purposes . Probably more hassle then it’s worth considering it seems like it’s a weekend car only
@@elliot7179 Last time I checked, a 30 cent difference between gas and 91 petrol at the moment, the same between 91 petrol and diesel. But you do get more power and range on petrol.
The low down performance improvement is massive, and that's will make the biggest difference. I was really surprised by that, added 6kw with no filter.
Hey mate, seen a neat craft during work today. On a patrol instead of having the snorkel come out of the fender it came out of the bonnet close to the firewall.
My thoughts are leading me to think a 4” snorkel, with custom air box with a slip on K&N filter. Kinda like 4” pipe to box, exposed box with kn filter and then four inch head to whatever diameter over the air intake shroud. Hope that makes sense, seems to be that would solve your air intake issues and heck you could probably make it out of pvc as a trial before committing to something custom and permanent 💁🏼♂️. Looking forward to it, and thanks for the video.
My old 1988 lpg tb42 carby still had the STD air filter on top but between the carby and filter had a similar shaped ring to your inlet adaptor but only the size of the carby diameter roughly 50mm and this just flowed the gas from the LPG converter. My adaptor was only about 25-30mm in height.
Erics is an Impressive Dyno operator I have worked with some of the best old-school Cosworth tuners. That long tube is an air intake heater the opposite function of a Turbo cooler. It will cost you big time up in Australia. Cooler air is a massive HP gain, Keep the intake pipes as short as possible in the engine bay. Or you might try insulating the tube, or diverting away from all of the heat sources, I'm not sure if that would work but it might be worth a try. A simple wire air temperature input sensor will show the results.
Top video, i threw my 300A in the bin, you'll never seal it and idle adjustment is not great. I switched to a 225 mixer which actually seals, has a more refined idle adjustment. I had to make a carby hat like the early hilux types and yep it was all done on exactly your model TB42s. . Thanks for the cam information 👍
Great result and for what you'r doing that is ample. Low down torque is what you want for 4X4 work as that is pulling force. Getting up hill without revving the guts out of the old girl.
Nice to see how the tune went on this. I was once a lpg/CNG fitter and tuner in NZ. Your Patrol looks like it's using a U.S Impco system. These are not the best for good air flow, they re very restrictive. If you want to get better air flow and so better fuel use, etc I'd look to change your whole system to a better system. Like I said Impco are very restrictive, but the up side is they are very simple. Once you fit a snorkel, as you've now already done, you should notice a difference as you are fitting a simple ram air system with the snorkel. A slightly bigger air box around your gas mixer will make a difference as will fitting an after market performance type air filter element. As you will know the way to make power and torque is to have the engine breath properly. More air in and more out makes a massive difference. You could go to headers and slightly bigger less restrictive exhaust. Might not make gains that you can feel, but should help with economy. Good video. Love watching you guys. I have to say that you are one of the better 4wd channels around. Keep it up
My way of thinking, 10--11kw is 10--11kw that's a good number just by tuning it proper, I'd be happy with that. How much did the dyno tuning cost now days?

The filter setup on the 3, 4.2 litre is a well known restriction. Those chasing higher power levels replace the filter housing with a flat panel filter set up.
Top job mate. It’s literally not HP figures it’s how it feels & drives. EG the idrive. People attack them for not adding Hp. But it’s how good it makes the vehicle feel.
Eric, you my mate are a mechanics mechanic. What a change from the suck and see jockeys who keep bolting shit on without understanding how engines actually work. Yes kids, this is what you call a tradesman
You must have been happy with stand at the Melbourne four wheel drive expo. Thanks for talking the time to speak to me, I know it must have been hectic.
The 90deg bend in the top of the gu filter box is very restrictive. It looks 3” but actually is about 1.5” because the bottom of the tubing is flattened.
@@MiniLuv-1984 I removed my 90lt LPG tanks and just put in the standard 90lt Petrol take so I have a 90 and 75 ltr tanks now ... costs a few bucks to full but plenty of range :)

Can I throw a question in here to get everyone thinking With all the increae in touque. Especially on an older motor what extra strain is that likely to have on the crankshaft and pistons. I have seen a couple of new ranger, hilux , Navra, that have been rechiped , remapped to pull vans that have a greater tare weight than the towing vehicle. Retuned for higher power , torque etc . Pistons cracking , crankshaft breaking .etc Was the increase in torque significant enough to create problems with the bottom end of the motor later down the track to me that is about a 10% gain in power and torque. Interested on everyone's opinion
I don't think it would be an issue Andrew. A couple of mates GQ's have similar modifications and they haven't had any dramas. TB42's are pretty solid engines. Might be a different story if he went all out and turbocharged it and wound the boost right up. I'd say that the Ranger/Hilux/Navara's that you're referring to are being taken way beyond what they were designed and engineered for.....significant power/torque increases and heavy towing will eventually find a short coming. Especially when you're talking small 4 cylinder common rail diesels that are highly strung.
