    In this tutorial, we're making half drop repeats! This is similar to my process for Full Drop repeats, with a couple more transforming/flipping steps and extra saved selections.
    If you are using the premade canvas, skip ahead to 7:17! Setting the selections is if you want to use your own canvas.
    Hover along the timeline of the video for the sections, or navigate with these timestamps:
    (00:00) - Intro - what we're painting
    (1:29) - Half Drop vs Full Drop
    (2:24 ) - Setting saved selections
    (7:17) - Drawing the pattern elements (get this canvas under 'freebies' in description)
    (13:46) - First Transforming Step
    (14:48) - Adding more elements
    (19:33) - Second Transforming Step
    (20:24) - Final elements and adjustments
    (24:44) - Testing the repeat
    (27:08) - Finished outcome
    (27:20) - Outro
    Thank you for stopping by to making art with me!

    *TROUBLESHOOTING:*
    If you're getting an error message when you try to select/transform a group, do this:
    - Tap the selection tool while on a single layer, and turn it to Freehand
    - While in the selection tool, deactivate Color Fill (the little paint bucket)
    Then try again :)
    Check the written instructions here: www.woolypronto.com/tutorials/procreate-half-drops

    I was loving this tutorial from the beginning and was following it well until 7:08 where I had the canvas coloured on the left half, and then you jumped to talking about the pre-made canvas at 7:16, and I I'm not sure how you got the Guides 1 and Guides 2 layers in the Layers panel. So I'm still stuck at 7:08 with the half-coloured canvas. Really new to Procreate here and really needing helpppppp. Thank you!!

    Over the years, I’ve made countless patterns in Illustrator and several in Photoshop, but for some crazy reason I’ve never been able to figure out how to do it in Procreate until now. I have a B.S. in Clothing & Textile Design, but unfortunately for me the focus was always on designing clothes, not textiles. I didn’t realize until after I graduated (over 20 years ago) that I’m much more interested in designing prints, so I’ve had to learn how to make repeats on my own. Thank you so much for sharing this. ❤️

You seem like someone I’d love to get a coffee with - I also have a B.S., in Apparel Design & Development ☺️ I feel like the industry is kind of an iceberg in that there are SO many creative and fascinating jobs/specialties that you’d never realize from the surface view… (like colorists! Trend analysts! And textile artists!) …and so I’m happy for you that you found your passion within all of that ❤️❤️ do you have an art instagram? That would be the saved selections 5 and 6. Would loading and inverting selections 1-4 give me a regular pattern (as opposed to a half dropped pattern)? Thank you.

The red and blue guide layers are something I made separately in Adobe Illustrator - if you download the project canvas (linked in the video description) they are located in that procreate file. • @WoolyPronto
      @WoolyPronto  3 года назад +4

      Hi Jeeta, great question! It depends on the client and the end use of the pattern. If using it as, say, a website background or something, you can likely give them a flattened version of the single repeat. For printing on products, though (especially if it's mass production), there can be a lot of technical parameters, but I'd expect the client/vendor would have that info in advance. For print-on-demand (like spoonflower, redbubble, etc), you can upload the single repeat as a JPG or PNG :) Hope this helps!

    Love this tutorial. I was struggling with making a half drop pattern, your explanation makes it sound easy. Will be trying your method soon. One point I don't understand is your red and blue guidelines. Are those lines you drew on a separate layer?

    • @WoolyPronto
      @WoolyPronto  3 года назад

      Yes, but i wouldn’t recommend necessarily drawing them on a new canvas - I imported mine on a separate layer from Illustrator. You can download the canvas with the template all set up via the link in the description (it also has the selections saved, so it should be quicker!)
      Once you get the hang of it, if you want to set up your own size canvas, you can copy and paste the layers from the template if you want - or skip them altogether. Hope that helps clear it up!!

    Best pattern tutorial I have seen!! Thank you so much. Nevertheless I have a problem I cant't solve, when I select the group of layers and try to use the selection tool an error message appears, it says “You have selected a group, do you want to open the layers?” (It is translated from spanish, so maybe the message is slightly different). The thing is that it doesn’t matter if I press the yes or the cancel button, it doesn't let me do anything other than moving the whole image. Any thoughts on what can be the solution? Thank you so much in advanced.

    I ALMOST got this to work. The moment I was on the second half (Guide 2 section), Procreate wouldn’t let me select the Pattern Group. It kept saying “Group Selected. You current;y have a group selected. Would you like to open Layers? [Cancel] [Open Layers]". But in my layers, once it opens, nothing is hidden. I don’t even have anything alpha locked. I even went back in the history to the moment after the first transform on Guide 1 and still same message. Anyone else have this issue or know what the heck Procreate wants? I couldn’t figure out why it worked once but not a second time.
    Your instructions are very nice. Thank you!

      I gotchu! Here’s how to fix that:
      - Tap the selection tool while on a single layer, and turn it to Freehand
      - While in the selection tool, deactivate Color Fill (the little paint bucket)
      Then try again :)

    How large can these be printed to? Would that require changing the quadrant set up?

    • @WoolyPronto
      @WoolyPronto  3 года назад

      It all depends on how big you make the canvas! You'll need to adjust the guide layers if you're using them - they might get a little pixelated as the size goes up, but that won't impact the actual print. The set up of the quadrants/saved selections stays the same, just be sure to snap to the gold guides so everything stays precise. Totally depends on what you're printing, too, but if you're using it as a repeat on fabric or something, check with the supplier/vendor to see if there are restrictions on repeat size - bc sometimes they're limited by the actual physical machinery. Just something to keep in mind :)

    Does anybody know why my canvas shows fine white border when I fill a layer with color? I’m so frustrated.

    • @WoolyPronto
      @WoolyPronto  3 года назад

      Hi Amira - I’m sorry for the frustrating issues! Fortunately, I think I can give you some good news on this. If you’re using the light interface, that fine white line on the border of the canvas is just part of the app’s UX, meant to indicate the very edge of the canvas. It won’t be a part of your actual artwork, but helps to visually “interrupt” the canvas from the grid background (background meaning, off-canvas area). If you switch to Dark Mode (available under the wrench > prefs), you’ll see the line changes to black. Hope this helps!!

    • @WoolyPronto
      @WoolyPronto  3 года назад

      Hi Bridgett! Some people have had issues selecting with a group if Color Fill is turned on (the little paintbucket in the selection toolbar), or if Automatic Selection is on... you can check that both of these are turned off (selection set to Freehand)? Alternatively, you can transform each layer individually, but that's definitely a hassle. Hope this helps you get to the solution though!

    What can I do

    • @WoolyPronto
      @WoolyPronto  3 года назад

      Oh no!! I have only gotten this message when I'm trying to use the paintbrush/smudge/eraser on a group, not the selection tool. I'm wondering if there's some kind of bug in the program depending on ipad/version? One work around would be to load the selection and transform each layer separately, but that would definitely be time consuming. Maybe try playing around with a smaller canvas / fewer layers within the group? And if it's still not working, I'd definitely reach out to Procreate's Care team, they're super helpful! If you do reach out to them, reference this part of the Handbook: procreate.art/handbook/5.1/layers/layers-organize/ (Under "Group Layers", the paragraph under "Select")

      Hi E.L., sorry to hear you ran into this issue. I know this method is a little more complex - it's definitely understandable that you'd find other methods preferable! In case you still are interested, here's how to solve the error:
      - Tap the selection tool while on a single layer, and turn it to Freehand
      - While in the selection tool, deactivate Color Fill (the little paint bucket)
      Then try again.
      This method is great if you want to keep your layers intact, which is why it's a little more involved. Again, totally get it if this isn't the method for you :)
