- Francisco Goya was both one of the greatest artists of his age - and manic depressive. His work has much to teach us about how to handle our fragility and anxiety.

“The Spanish painter Francisco Goya is one of the outstanding artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born into a middle-class family in 1746, in Fuendetodos in Aragon, he began painting young and was quickly recognised by his contemporaries for his genius. We acclaim him today for, among other works, his masterpieces, The Third of May 1808, his portrait of Charles IV and his family - as well as his series of unflinching prints, The Disasters of War.
However, his most emotionally compelling work is a print he made in 1799, titled - hauntingly and evocatively - The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters…”

As an artist, I strongly resonate with this video and the works of Goya. His art deeply inspires me. While I initially turned to art during challenging times, it has now seamlessly integrated into every emotional phase of my life. Art has truly become an integral part of my journey. This realization underscores the significance of art and artists in fostering empathy, healing, and connection. It reminds us why the exchange of artistic expressions is essential in nurturing compassion among individuals. I am genuinely grateful for the insights this educational video has provided.
I’ve heard that some of his work he made not to show it. Reminds me of “creativity without an audience” like you guys said on the video “Why you don’t have to be exceptional”. This man truly was... Cheers
Yes, this is the Black Paintings, his greatest work. They were ahead of their time by a century
My "night time monsters" used to be so bad that I'd drink myself to oblivion to avoid them. After I got sober, it was more of snacking at night to get the dopamine hit and flush away the "monsters speak." Nowadays, I make a conscious effort to stop eating at 6pm. Grapple with my inner harsh voices by reading a good book, or having some warm tea, or playing a electronical game of cribbage. The night monsters still linger, but the more I acknowledge them, and accept them for what they are, the easier it is to get through the night. 💜
those are good ways to deal with it!
ASMR helps me a lot, if you remember to focus on the sounds and not the thoughts overlapping. it's actually a lot like meditation
Love this video! And yea those thoughts when I’m tired be kicking my butt 😅 I always remind my self it’s the exhaustion talking and not actually how life is. ❤
I admire these videos. They are well grounded, make sense and are unflinching. They give particular importance to the role of childhood in shaping our adult personalities for both good and ill. Calling a spade a spade, the videos emphasize the role of parents and parenting in the lives of children and do not retreat to what are often, but are not always, bogus biological theories of emotional disturbance that let parents off the hook.
Best description of depression ever
@salvadordominguez5090 , Yes agreed. I always thought it was a critique of idealism gone wrong. How The Enlightenment lead to the ideals of the french revolution. The French Revolution turned very bloody indeed and was followed by the Napoleonic wars that ravaged Europe and the middle east. Quoting you: " from the dream of reason produce the monster of reality"
Meditation practice can soon reveal that ''I am NOT my thoughts''. When I was younger, I felt the need to keep vigil with my thoughts until my mind was calm. Now I just cut off the lights, and turn my attention to my breath, in a state of forgiveness and compassion that soon extends beyond myself, to all beings. Then the sweet relief of sleep, will come!
As a Spaniard, this interpretation is a little bit open. Goya's massive printings were done as a political strategy to point out the imperfections he saw in Spanish society.
This one is all around the idea of Spanish folks being far from thoughtful, for which the elite of the enlightened suffers
Oh, I am so glad you wrote this post because I was just thinking about the same. I do appreciate the fact someone is giving the time to Goya's amazing work; however, as a Spanish literature teacher - with a bit of a background on Goya's works - I am concerned the presenter's interpretation is very off. This is a very post-modern approach from a North American perspective which with all respect lacks so much in context. This interpretation is out of its historical context. The interpretation of the presenter here has been reduced to pure psychology - the psychology of the needed ones, emotionally speaking -. The Spanish speaking world set very strong boundaries between art and psychology. We are not a culture that reduces life to pathologies and psychology.
Agreed. I thought the video's interpretation was weird. I always understood these images as Goya's resentment of superstitious thinking and how a lack of reasoning derails politics. Something that's especially relevant today.
@@tiadoran That's right, it's not about depression, it's a call against a superstitious society and the unreasoned politics of the time that it provoqued.
One of the best videos you guys have ever done. Thank you
I like this channel
Outstanding piece you have here.
Even better than your usual excellence.
How great these descriptions were, thank you very much 🌿🙏🏻
ironic that falling asleep is so imperative to our physical health, yet can be so detrimental to our mental
Sleeping can be detrimental to our mental health? What are you talking about?
NAH
Sleep is “the nothingness” reminding you, who’s in charge. Even gnats sleep. So, while you are awake…rejoice! For one day, that sleep will be eternal.
Even more ironic is that it's also imperative to our mental health..
I dont get the irony. Sleeping is great for physical and mental health.
*Dark Comment Warning*
Mine isn't the easiest way, but it's definitely the surest and most stable.. After a childhood in psychological slavery, at 34 years old I beat the demons for good.
In my self-hatred, I fell fully into the void and refused to accept life without logically dissecting how I don't deserve their presence, not through supposition or kind words, but through the harsh critique of my understanding of physical causality depicting undeniable evidence. For years my life was nothing but study and introspection.
I will never have to face those thoughts again, although remembering how I'm unshakeable against each demon reminds me of the infeasible tenacity I now carry into life.
Currently, the only thoughts that hold me down are intangible abstract emotions that my newly unlocked nervous system is working through with somatic coaching and incorporating my understanding of polyvagal theory into my everyday practice. I have a bright future that other voidwalkers never had the resources to achieve without many wise mentors willing to revel in darkness once again to save another. I have earned my peace, and in it I will live every moment committed to aligning public perception to virtue for the good of the people.
Time to make art. 💙
Interesting interpretation, however,
I understood that he didn't mean one's actual sleep but the 'sleep' or suspension of reason turns oneself into a monster capable of committing horrific acts.
Such as when one does what authority figures mandate, without employing reason to determine whether one ought to, one easily becomes a monster.
A great recent example is the global medical malpractice started in 2020, which can't be mentioned here without prejudice, that turned doctors, nurses and so many others into apathetic monsters.
That's not how PTSD works. One develops PTSD when one can neither fight nor flee from harm to the self or others. You'll be more likely to get PTSD if your squad was shelled or ambushed and all died and you were unable to help them. You cannot fight those buddies back to life, and you can't run away from your visceral feelings in that moment. If someone tries to assault you or another, and you can fight the attacker off, or escape from danger, you'll generally be OK. Helplessness, the inability to do anything, in a horrific experience causes PTSD. You may be thinking of Moral Trauma. When your beliefs about the world and yourself are at odds with your actions.
Awareness of the social subtleties beyond the norm - incredibly spot on...🎯 I don't think anyone has mastered why or how one develops PTSD... apathetic monsters are found in the masses, especially the profit mongers and the power hungry. They (the masses) really ought to focus and conquer their own demons and master their own selves.
Great video, but -
I really wish your producer/video editor let the essay COMPLETE, with its illustration full screen... before filling the display with the ads for books and other videos, while the narrator is still building up to the concluding point.
As is, it really puts the commerce before the message.
I agree. And also, does a channel with 8.5M subscribers really need to play the RUclips thumbnail game? Started with the vague and mild hyperboles but now this one even has the red arrow pointing to the obvious subject of the image. Always thought SoL was better than that.
i don't think this is about disturbing thoughts at night
when the personified "reason" goes to sleep, when someone is unreasonable, monsters are created
the unreasonable person is a monster
That’s exactly what I understood it to mean too.
Albeit this take was new and insightful as well
This is the voice in my mind with which I read my ethics notes
Made me shiver a few times over
I highly recommend not eating sugar in the evening, or too much carbohydrate. Not all people are sensitive to it, but it stopped my nightmares and insomnia many years ago. If I accidentally have some, or even a glass of wine, which is rare, it comes back immediately. (Also, if you are sensitive to it, is worth removing it most of the time. ).
Is worth trying it if you are having problems with sleep.
Splendid! ❤
Sometimes during the day you feel just like night time :(
The only solution of this is to sleep early and wake up early. During night time our rational part of brain takes backseat and emotional part takes charge that's why we can be vulnerable to our negative thoughts but this is also the time when creative & crazy ideas can come, which rationality might hinder.
"The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters…”
So up-to-date!!!!!!! As everybody can see!
I've learned to handle the dreaded 3am thoughts, it's what happens when I sleep that terrifies me. Just had another night terror early this morning. Woke up in a cold sweat. It's hard to wake up from that sort of dream.
I have been following this channel for years now and it has really inspired me and impacted my life in a very positive manner. I am inspired to make similar videos, though a bit simpler, for teaching high schoolers but I do not know how to go about it. Is there anyone here who can guide me on what I need to learn and any available open source software I can use as a beginner? I will really appreciate.
May I suggest long evening walks to beat "night monsters". The mind succumbs as the body beckons it to deep sleep.
Thank you for your video. May I comment on a different interpretation on this work from Goya?
I will point out that another translation of "el sueño de la razón produce monstruos" could be "the dream of reason produces monsters", not "the sleep of reason (...)". Even though in spanish sueño can refer to the act of sleep, it refers more often to dreams. One can then interpret very differently the meaning of the picture and the title, maybe regarding reason as something that, if unchecked, may conjure up the worst creatures.
I hope my comment was useful, thank you again for your contet.
Big fan of #the_school_life❤
ive actually befriended them. theyre very creative because i talk in pictures in my head rather than in words, theyre entertaining.
alot of killing scenes here and there 😅😂
This reminds me how damaging can be to deal with toxic family members
Don't let your mind stop you.
You're unstoppable
A better translation… the dream of reason… as from the dream of reason produce the monster of reality
Once you should also make a video on RABINDRANATH TAGORE(noble laureate), a poet by profession but his philosophy is worth admiring
Most excellent! There are of course as many different interpretations of this serious work of art as there are people with different perspectives and backgrounds. Lovely hearing yours
I always understood it to mean when we abandon reason, facts and civilized discourse it may produce the monsters in humanity to take rule.
…I’ve been referring to this concept as the last several years have been playing out politically in the US.
Insightful 😮
boy i love butterfly 😮❤🎉
I learnt to mind my own business and not to pay attention to my monsters, that is strange for a monster whose powerless inside your mind just because you don't care if they exist or not
Did Goya mean "Sleep of Reason" or "Dream of Reason"?
Damn! ASMR voiceover! So foking soothing!
Gotta learn to live evereything inside you
Here are my answers to those "judgmental animals":
1:27 Who can truly achieve anything in the face of death? There will be no "achievement" I'll be able to take to my grave.
1:32 Why should I care about your opinion? Those are my desires, not yours.
1:37 Why should I have met your expectations? If you're disappointed, that's just a consequence of your own delusions about me.
interesting but it is such an individualistic reading... maybe if we think sociologically we could find better ones. looking at wars could be a hint. I'd suggest something more like the Eclipse of Reason by Horkheimer.
The sleep of reason is a real problem. However, there is a problem that I find far more often. It's where reason and mental associations inside the mind lack correspondence with reason and association in reality outside the mind. As an extreme example, in big cities, we can see homeless men walking on the streets talking about some reasons and associations inside their mind that are not found outside their mind. As a more recent example, we found a popular group of people thought the reasoning behind the map in the Barbie movie was a plot with Chinese. If you can imagine, this could be something we would hear from a crazy homeless person walking down the street. The reasoning and associations inside their mind didn't match or correspond to the reasoning and associations in reality outside their mind. When you know how to look for this lack of correspondence between the mind inside and the reality outside the mind, you may notice that it is found too often. Though it may not to be to the extreme, over time, this can accumulate in the mind which will move the mind further and further into a state where it does become more like that homeless man walking on the street. This video clip is a good in that it talks about the problems with reasoning. We just need to go further and talk about the correspondence between the mind inside with the reality outside the mind. That's where there are some serious problems with reasoning!
Damn... it really resonates.
💚
It's nice to see you doing a thoughtful deep dive into something historical again rather than the endless, endless romance stuff y'all have gotten mired in lately
LEAVE BATS OUT OF THIS !!! 🦇
This is driving me nuts: I cannot remember which Stephen King novel references, not the painting itself I don't think, but the statement _The sleep of Reason breeds monsters._ If I can remember who the character is that it's about, or at least what the circumstances were that merited that statement I could remember the book. Does anybody know? Please???
Does nowadays artists make us think like Goya does?
The night.
The irony that sleep deprivation can lead to mania is not lost on me
My monsters show up as I'm waking up. They hover around for awhile until I have my cup of coffee and get rolling.
This isn't about Goya at all. You have absconded Goya's talent for your silly argument.
Seneca: The body should be treated more rigorously, that it may not be disobedient to the mind.
Poorly done! There are some very different interpretations of this work. Hint: Enlightenment, Friedrich August von Hayek etc.
Meshuggah anyone?
Man this interpretation is completely wrong lol 😂😂 Goya was a critic of the ruling systems and constant wars he lived, heavily influenced by the enlightenment philosophers. This piece was the central one for a series called “the horrors of war”, he was trying to show people the disaster and the monsters that were created when reason was so shortly used in Europe.
When i feel overwhelmed i pray and i ask "Jesus please help me!" and miraculously he helps me. Believe and trust on Him.
What is the title of this video? (I can only see the stupid translation)
Can I just aud and abet that point by adding that if I see a video with a (in my case) German title, I expect it to be in German! Isn't that only "reasonable"?
Ok guys, I just want to say that I LOVE your work for many years now, but I simply HATE the click bait thumbnail titles you are doing in your videos lately. They don’t seem related at all to the content, and mostly, they just seem like cheap empty tricks to just get the attention of people in a non relevant way. Does it work? That’s why you’re doing it? It’s ugly and, to tell you the truth, slightly offensive given the basic sensationalist language. Something so different for what you stand for. That’s the opinion of a deep admirer of your work. Keep up doing the wonderful things you do… except for these brainless dumb thumbnail titles…😅
This voice is more and more, every time... kind of annoying... sounds like a I-know-it-all type to me... 😑
Wow well said😅
