- I came to Brazil to visit my family and in the process started a hunt for a smartphone.. lets take a look at what we found! Also, we are visiting Florianopolis, Brazil. This city is the capital and located South of Sau Paulo.
Here is a dumb phone you can game on, the Cat S22 Flip:

hey guys wanted to note a couple things!
1st, this is not an attempt to make Brazil look bad? I went to several shops and they were all selling J series phones so I bought one. I know people here use flagships and other phones than this.. it’s cool J2 can still be used in 2023! 2g and 3g are a thing here for now, and I was celebrating that.
2nd, sorry for the audio. I recorded the voiceover in a closet of our hotel at 2am.. but I didn’t want to miss an upload!
-Johnzoid
The video was good.
I bought an iPhone 7 for 15 dollars, the only problem is that the ear speaker crackles a little
Yes, we still have 2G here in Brazil. It's great because folks (like my stepdad) who aren't into smartphones can still use their old Nokias.
that’s awesome.. dang.. I need to find a Nokia before I leave and play with it!
U gonna need it.brazil is so big it wont be good for 4g/5g on SA setup
Num acredito...
@@sargera1here in Brazil there is good 4g and 5g, especially in the capitals.
Same here in Europe, my 3310 from my childhood still works. i use it once or twice a year to remember the old days.
The only reason Brazilians use these old phones is because the cost of a smartphone is very expensive. An S23Ultra basically costs around 5 minimum wages in Brazil.
yes, inflation doesn’t leave much left to spend on electronics. my wife was born and raised there- moved to USA about 8 years ago. she’s explained and expressed this to me- and her family who is still there tell us the cost of cellular and electronics makes it harder.
@@johnzoid74 Everything in Brazil actually, but mainly phones and cars. Today in Brazil, anyone who buys a new car is paying just over 53% in tax included in the total price of the car.
5 minimum wages is cheaper than here
@@johnzoid74 Not that much due to inflation as the aburdly high taxation. Up to 77% after new taxes introduced this year.

5:50 In the past, cell phones came with an app to watch live television here in Brazil, only open channels worked, as the radio came too
I remember seeing this phone everywhere and it was priced at around 130USD back when it was launched.
same!
For the TV to work I guess you have to plug a wired earphones
So the cost for the J2 Prime is 299 Reals, right? Honestly, it seems reasonable enough for me to buy it just for the nostalgia (60 bucks).
Jetpack Joyride and temple run are awesome!
The Sd card is supposed to go under the metal slot. Not on top or halfway in like that.
You forgot to show that it has a front led flash
Does anyone still hold on to their J7 prime from 2017 even after it's been beaten so bad 😅
Hard to keep on it.the amoled is nightmare to replace
Me 🙋🏻♀️ Using it as tertiary phone now. Still works nicely. The only problem is full storage (i have 32gb version)
That is literally my Grandpa's old phone, Those are cheap J2 prime knockoffs I'm pretty sure (most of the time), they may have 8gb of internal storage but in reality they only have 4gb, and what's worse is it cuts down your storage even more because there is some pre-installed microsoft apps crap and other stuff
3:38 same for romania in June 2024
Fun fact : im watching this video from the same phone.

lol I know. Facebook not an opp option as I’m not confident in Portuguese and it’s not the safest viable option. On $50 budget we went to a phone market and this was cheapest viable option. I’m not upset- it’s a sweet older phone!
Also- had Utility here as it still makes calls and has needed functionality

dude! I’m jealous! we visited Praia do Estaleirinho yesterday and swam for hours. I’ve been married to my wife for 6 years and love everything about Brazilian culture. Not only that but Brazil is one of the most beautiful places on the planet!🌎

Brazil is gone more nuts with the taxation, I sent some phones to my Brazilian wife a while ago and she paid pretty penny in import taxes for those. Now the taxes are even steeper and the shipping is massively slowed down as customs are practically inspecting everything that enters the country.
The j2 prime had included a small antenna. It was basically a headphone jack to headphone port adaptor. Plugging in the headphone port on the phone would make the TV app work
ahhhhh this is good to know thank you. No I’m on the hunt for something similar!
Only South American Models have antenna
Not after TV sinal upgrade
@@johnzoid74 , any headphone connect to p2 port will work as antenna. Some models of Motorola and Lg (not only Samsung) sold for the Brazilian market have the capability of watch digital tv. And yes, still works until today.
I'm still using this as my main phone, and I would have to say that this phone was amazing for it's time. I have the 8GB version and it's really hard for me to install applications on it even after I debloated it cause the Android itself takes about 4.54GB of storage and I somehow have all of my apps installed on the remaining 3.2GB storage. The battery is also not that reliable even after changing it many times and instantly dies after reaching about 50%. But still, the software is surprisingly fast and optimized and can run smoothly. Even as of right now, it can still perform daily tasks and browse social media almost without any problem! Loved the vid tho!
Ah the old randomly shutting off its memorable
I had a j3 prime with 1.5gb of ram and 16gb of storage. It's faster and better than an a01 or a03 core.
@@medal14365 Yeah, and this phone somehow have the tendency to sense when sonething urgent and important is going on, so as a result it just crashes and powers off and won't turn back on until I plug the charger in. I've experienced so many things with this one DAMN phone 😂
I’ve had a Samsung galaxy j2 one of the later models it had 15gigs of storage and 4g lite I’ve had it since 2020 and finally got something better and I’ll be damned I still have to rely upon it for texts
Brazil still has 2g and 3g networks (and it is possible that 3g will be shut down before 2g). There are still some 3g phones being sold new, like the Multilaser E Lite 2 and Positivo Twist 5.
that is WILD. why would they shut down 3g before 2g? Super interesting thanks for the info there
@@johnzoid74 There are many equipment that connect to the 2g network and don't need the 3g bandwidth. Also, some dual-sim smartphones can only connect to 4g (or 3g) in one sim card, leaving the other only one with 2g.
@@johnzoid74As already mentioned, many IoT devices only work on 2G, particularly truck tracking devices, and since the country is huge and quite hilly, in a lot of places only 2G signal is able to reach, specially along remote highways.
Brazil + Let's Explore... *Should never be in the same sentence* 😂
dude it’s such an amazing place! although yes has it’s dangerous sides for sure lol
Just as an addendum: There's probably no Custom Rom with recent Android versions in the market, I searched a lot to get one running on my dad's old J2 Prime that he gave me to sell (never sold it, using it as a small home server with UserLAnd lol). The only rom with a recent android is a LineageOS 14.1 (I think) that doesn't work great (probably it lacks a lot of Mediatek's drivers), so it's a no go. But fortunately there's a lot of other roms for it with Android 6 and some customizations.
If you have some time can you please tell me more about UserLand and what it's used for and how are you using it. (Sorry as a tech nerd I just wanted to learn about to 😅)
@@blueshoregaming1591 It's a very simple app that works in a chroot state inside a container. It works almost like a Docker container I would say, as it doesn't have systemd and such. I'm using it to run Ubuntu mostly, it works both on Armhf devices and Arm64 ones. I have used to run some APIs, u can use it to store files to, it's a very cool app tbh.
@@blueshoregaming1591 Just a correction, Userland runs in proot, Linux Deploy (another android app for deploying Linux. Linux Deploy requires a rooted device) that runs in chroot.
This. Sadly, that rom has too many "tiny" issues. Battery drains too quickly cuz its processor is always at 100% usage, cant record with the camera, etc.
The developer used to update that rom every month, and then apply the same changes to a lineage os 15 rom he was also working on. I wonder what hes up to since he disappeared
I think you have to put headphones on the headphone jack for the MobileTV to work. And I think it only picks up analog television.
Update: I searched the device specs for the J2 prime and the device has a tv tuner on it. And it's digital.
Originally the phone came with an antenna, idk where mine is, but I remember seeing it, it was an adapter you connected to the headphone jack, it had another headphone jack in the end to plug earphones, idk how it worked exactly, but I don't remember if common headphones/earphones works the same way as the antenna.
The only issue with these phones is the lack or asbsense of Android security updates
That is what kinda forces you to upgrade even with a good working phone as you are nothing without good security and security updates are definitely a part of that
@@me234234 my Oppo phone runs out of updates from March next year, when should I stop using it?
@@me234234there is antivirus
LOL google already steals all of your data. I don’t see why people using standard versions of android are concerned about security while their privacy is severely violated by the spyware pre installed on their devices.
@@me234234It doesn't, since there are (very good) anti-virus apps in the play store. I buy a new phone (like every 2 years) and only update it like twice to fix the bugs. If you update for too long your phone slows down. (Planned obsolescence, that's why Apple does it)

Like this comment if you agree
It was one of greatest phone for people like me in that time!
While you are here in Brazil it's really a good oportunity to get old tech. A lot of people like me still like and use things like the PS2.
And you got scammed on this phone, It should be a lot cheaper on used markets like Facebook marketplace or Shopee. These guys from street stores scam people a lot here. Buying from a normal person instead of a store It would cost 100 R$
I'm still using this phone and I like this phone because it brings my childhood memories
I am currently using an old Galaxy S2 as an MP3 player, the good old days of Android 4.1.2 jellybean😂
Jellybean= 🐐 … strictly on nostalgia lol
My mom recently took her Samsung Galaxy Note 9 for repairs and the shop she took it to had a Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime for display to show how well they fix phones, what a coincidence that I see a video of one 😂😂
This video is like no respect to Brazil, any phone below 1200 reais much such and the best ones start from 1700 and I’m talking about good and brand new phones, you got a 2012 Samsung phone, probably used but you paid the price of a brand new (back in 2012 the Samsung phones was something like this 300 reais)
Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime user here, Thanks for making this video! Even though it's kind of laggy though, and the 'stand' is a phone stand for phones! (Or tablets).
The first phone I ever owned ran Android 6. It was a ZTE phone from 2015. I was never that big into mobile gaming. It was a pretty good phone though. I did run emulators on it. I got a MAME emulator successfully running on it.
These kind of phones are really common in Argentina also. My mother is still using my old J7 2016 (rock and roll of a phone)
Mine was also 50$ im from brazil and the phone is.. very laggy.
Edit: i mean its a budget phone why would it not lag
4:54 you don't need to have an adapter, just insert the SIM card correctly, I used my phone like this a lot of time

same in USA, although this one has much more character 🖖😎
Idk what country you're talking about, but this guy in this video totally got it way more expensive than usual, as a brazillian i would not have paid this for a j2 prime, you can get a j4 core for that price here.
Anyway thanks for the comment it makes me feel great ❤
A cellphone with built in tv tunner is a good idea to U.S phones. This is an excellent idea!

you can buy much nicer phones for not much more even here, but yeah, plenty of people still on their old Samsungs lol

Your videos give me some kind of nostalgia to the old phones 😂❤
mine is j7 and my sisters is j7 max with android 8.1.0 and i already lived in that city
I do not miss old smartphones. The new ones are a lot better. They are bigger and they have better battery life.
thanks for leaking the guy's email😂😂😂
thanks for the point out- I fixed and it will be blurred once the video processes again.
you said the sd card reader wasnt functional right? did u try another sd card to see if it was functional or just the sd card not working
As a brazilian, i confirm this is accurate.
i used to have a phone like that from 2017-2020. it was a j2 prime indeed but an 8gb variant, which is actually kinda frustrating.
though here in the Philippines, the tv app doesn't exist. but it has to be an antenna that can transmits radio frequencies.
i can't download games (or ANY documents exceed with 5mb) and it's sometimes stucked on bootloop, it is such a nostalgia. probably the most durable phone i've ever had.
I had a j5 2015 a long while ago, it stopped updating in android 6 but I managed to get it to android 7, good times! (currently on iphone 13)
The US got so consumed by consumerism. The sad part is, they spend their hard earned money for the thousand dollar phone and then replace it again after 3 months for another 1k phone just because they aren't satisfied or because a newer iPhone or Pixel or galaxy released. Yeah I know trade-in deals are there, but come on, aren't you having separation nostalgia when you replace your phones very often?

That device reminds me so much of my Samsung On 5 phone, which basically looks identical from the front, and came out approximately around the same time, maybe even in 2015, I think.

we have those too in Indonesia and it become our benchmark of how potato a phone is lol
Me watching this vid on a galaxy j2 prime
A couple of things, newer higher capacity SD cards don't work with older technology unless it's refomated to something like fat32, as for the tv app, in certain countries in Asia like Korea and Japan they broadcast using a different technology for ota tv. We had something similar in u.s. that didn't take off, called atsc, 1.0 m/h (Mobile/handheld). Tv handhelds are niche, but they might become a thing with atsc.3.0
Brazil uses the same tech as in Japan for TV Broadcasting, so probably a Japanese phone with TV will probably work in Brazil's TV networks.
It requires a headphone inserted for Mobile TV, it's used as an antenna.😊
Good to know.
I swear the 8GB internal memory version of this phone is a crap man.
My mom is been using this phone for like 5 years and all the things that I always remember from this phone is the storage running out notification.
Even if you hardreset it cause like 1 day after you just update the Google services on that phone, you got the same notification.
But now I'm glad that I'll be able to fix this issue by running the debloat script for that I find on XDA. After I installed the script, that J2 Prime got more than 3GB internal storage free.
I don't know what you mean by "android 6 games", most of the current games still support android 6

i am still using a removable battery phone
Question do people still use such phones?
I am a ewaste bin diver from the US that resells phones anything from low end older samsungs to newer iPhones. I am surprised that these older models sell and im glad that people would reuse them.
Tho even here in the US some people use older Samsungs. And in the country my parents are from (Romania) it is not uncommon to see people still using the Samsung S7. Which is pretty cool imo the S7 is still very capable.
Yup, although yes they are considered cheap here too, and the average family will either get this used for a youngster, or just have one from back in the day in some drawer, i live in the poorest state of brazil called Alagoas, and in here this phone and phones as such are very common with elderly people and with kids, and theres a huge community of - and im totally making this name up, but not the community - "phone overhaulers" or "phone tuners" (i think it sounds cool), which is just a bunch of ppl that for one reason or another want to pull the most amount of performance and usability out of this phones, either out of necessity or just as a hobbie.
You will see people turning MHL capable phones or Dex capable phones into straight up game consoles or desktops, overclocking their chips and putting big heatsinks on them with coolers and a bunch of other stuff.
You will see people grabbing cheap/used/given/straight up trash picked parts for everything.
I mentioned some big examples and stuff yes, BUT in between less crazy fellas, theres this unwritten rule: rooting your phone and stripping every piece of bloatware from your cheap slow phone to AOSP levels is a rite of passage to become one of us mad scientists LOL
Making your device completely devoid of bloatware, sometimes using swap ram(which theres still a debate on and i will not get into), and sometimes even using root apps to, ans i'm nor kidding, lower the system's internal resolution to decrease load on the GPU and increase FPS are all practices that i have seen.
That plus all the modded apps, cracks, ane "lite" versions of games who remove assets and do all trickery to make the games/apps lighter, they even mess with stuff such as PSP and PS2 ISOs.
Not only Brazil has that of course but its also huge here, i'd say at least all the countries on BRICS have this, russian and chinese mods on stuff like these are also huge.
For better or for worse, the average brazillian is slowly starting to catch up over the past years and brand new flagship phones are not a rare sight as they were in 2013, having a galaxy s3 when it was new, was like having a bugatti, it was status, nowadays having an S22 Ultra is like having any nice - but common - new car, idk, a Chevy Cobalt or smth, that means that this community is changing, but even now it still exists, and there is always a poorer class and its there, with a huge dose of young juvenile creativity and craftsmanship that you see things flourish, and then you have stuff like an old trash picked 512mb ram tablet from 2015 and a toy fisher price laptop become a dosbox and retroarch cyberdeck ! (i did this last one, i can even film it and show it to ya).
Anyway sorry for the big text, i hope i gave you a very good insight onto how things are overall, i type this with the passion of a phone tuner since the symbian days.
Thank you so much for the insight! Sounds very fascinating what these people do. I've only tried out custom roms on a few of my phones to make them a bit better. I remember a few years back I used this Huawei u8650 with a custom rom to try to load a game like Minecraft cuz Minecraft didnt work and was shocked that it ran so good for such a phone.
That's the thing with Android. It doesn't get outdated that quickly. App support is really long!
iOS: umm... its the same thing with me. plus i have longer updates.
Samsung: im getting close y'know.
Apple: whatever. i will re-invent something and everybody will still be attached to me.
Samsung: **sues apple for a monopoly**
Apple: **dies somehow**
every single android fan(including me): lets throw a party that lasts for AT LEAST 2 years straight!
Apple: **comes back bc yes**
every single android fan: srsly? i wanna die.
**dies**
(also, you may be questioning that if im an android fan, why im giving positives to apple. well, the reason is bc i just want this battle to be fair.)
I still have an 8gb variant of this. Unusable unless you install a custom rom, and then there's the custom rom glitches themselves.

it’s definitely fun to mess around with.. I’ll drop a video Saturday of me gaming on mine 😂 N64 emualtion, psp emulation, and some cool apps I’m running
