  • This 1962 Pontiac Catalina is a lightweight 421 Super Duty. If that is not rare enough, it was sold out of Ace Wilson's Royal Pontiac on Woodward Ave in Detroit. Oh yeah, it was driven by Jim Wangers! At the time Jim was an advertising man ready to make a name for himself!

Pontiac did this car in a toy model. I am so proud to have it in my die cast collection.

Man what a beast....that 421 dual quad setup was a terror on the dragstrip

thats the old girl I remember from ‘62. Two door post hardtop (not the sport roof version). Heavy Eight lug wheels and WHITEWALLS to boot. Probably those old 7” Slicks to that were no good but were forced to run back then.

Open headers. Dad had a 62 catalina. First car I knew about 100mph. Dad's was a four on the floor with bucket seats. It had a myriad of issues but it was still a hot rod.

The inset grille & 8 lug wheels make it look like a Grand Prix to me. But hey, I'm a Chevy guy.

Jim Wangers actually worked for MacManus, John and Adams back then. They were the ad agency that had the Pontiac Motor Division account. Pontiac was dying on the vine and they wanted him to figure out a way to get people interested in Pontiacs and buying them.

Maybe the baddest engine ever put into a GM muscle car. The only others on the level of the 421SD are the Chevrolet L88 and ZL1 427s, which were extremely limited production engines built for drag racing, just like the 421SD. Sorry Chevy guys but the LS6 454 can't hang with any of these three, but is a much better engine for street use than the 421SD, L88, or ZL1

I wonder why they put a Grand Prix grill on it.

Probably for better cooling, more airflow.
AFAIK the Grand Prix front end is just the Catalina front end without the chrome strips.
