same...well let's say I felt sorry for all the good ingredients that went to waste....but once they were deep dish'd they were lost anyway....sad.....africans could have made a proper pizza out of these ingredients
Funny but heart warming. I wish those inmates a new lease on life. Kudos to the sheriff and the programs that allow the inmates to have hope. Thumbs up to the culinary instructor too.
If you missed it, the pizza is SOLD to inmates. Everything beyond three awful meals a day, small bar of soap, a travel-sized toothbrush, and a travel sized toothpaste inmates have to purchase. And, of course, at ridiculously marked up prices. And in most jails, the money the inmates use to purchase anything from pizza to an extra pair of underwear has to come from payment from their family or friends. Even if you were a super rich inmate, you can't write a check into your prisoner account. Your family has to do it. And guess what? The vast majority of these families can barely afford to stay in their homes, let alone buy clothes or pizza or deodorant for their loved ones in jail. Not to mention the outrageous cost of making a single phone call from to jail to a mom, wife, or friend. It's a separate account but, once again, it can only be filled from the outside. The rates close in on the old phone sex lines rates. There are voices fighting for PRISON reform, which is long overdue. But the movement for JAIL reform is in its infancy. It's a cause I've recently become associated with. There are far more Americans who go to jail than prison. Prison is for convicted felons. Jail is for people awaiting trial who can't afford bond, sentencing (who could be sentenced as felons and sent to prison), or who have been convicted of misdemeanors with sentences 359 days or less. Far more Americans enter (and rotate through) the JAIL system than the prison system. And sadly, every convicted felon I've spoken to who has experienced county jail and prison will say that prison (!) was a more humane experience. I'm glad this Sheriff believes in rehabilitation . . . but rehabilitation involves humanity. How about letting your inmates have a personal pizza once a week--or even just once a month--at no cost? Amazing.
Adam Saxe yeah! Those stupid jails! Keeping unsafe people away from the public so they can't do them harm! Providing free medical care and safety for an at-risk population! Oh yeah, and free food! We should give them more, better free food, at the expense of the taxpayer! Because on the streets, all pizza is free anyway, so they are really missing out!
you are absolutely right. I have a cousin who went to jail for 5 months, and his family basically paid $7,000 over those 5 months on food, clothes, and toiletries. Jails make tons of money.
G. Andaluz don't be ridiculous. We aren't talking about dangerous, violent, criminals in most cases. These are people awaiting trial or convicted on traffic, drug, or crimes carrying < a year for the most part.
Good thing it's not. Every place Ronny got Deep Dish to throw at walls from had Thin Crust of that prison's quality on the menu... though its too bad that he told everybody who watched this to avoid all those places with good thin crust that would hire those reformed pizza making prisoners.
Um what I understood from this segment was not about how deep dish pizza is gross, but how this culinary program training the inmates traditional pizza making skills will help them find jobs when they are released. And if they can relocate outside of the Chicago area most restaurants that have pizza on the menu are prepared this way (of course there are many restaurants in Chicago area have thin crust, brick oven pizzas but city is known for deep dish) They are not only learning how to prepare pizza the correct way, but also learning team work, safety and sanitation, and the possibility of cross training to other types of food preparation and maybe in the future, aspire to be in management positions or to open their own businesses. Good for Ronny to showcase inmates taking advantage of programs to better themselves. Sad that many viewers may not have paid attention to what this segment was really about.
Finally someone who agrees with me though I always suggested calling it umami yeist pie xD. Even though I think deep dish pizza is a crime against humanity I don‘t have anything against people liking it, I just don’t want the name of real pizza be dumped on by this abomination
I never realized how divisive pizza is! Lol. And to those complaining of waste, tv production y'all. Shit gets wasted left sitting as a prop all the time, and sometimes fake, everything is planned and is a joke. Calm your self. The car was not an "innocent" car. Was part of the production. Enjoy the joke and the good news about rehabilitation program. Jiminy jeez 🙃
It's not because he's wasting pizza. It's because he was lying because the joke doesn't hold up to reality. ALMOST EVERY PLACE HE WENT TO HAD THIN CRUST ON THE MENU! He basically told every Chicago bound tourist watching to avoid any pizza place that would HIRE those prisoners because either he or his writers were too lazy to write something that wasn't based entirely on a stupid stereotype.
I thought it ssoooooo funny , come on people you must all wear your pants to tight ,I m not in the biz , but even I can tell no real pizzas were harmed in the taping of this SKIT !!!!!!! P.s. You all should start wearing stretches..... Ha ha ha ha ha
Nevermind the pizza, I think the whole thing about Recipe for Change is a great idea. Seems like a great way to, as he said, open their minds and eyes for hope. Awesome!
I'm from the Chi, if you want Pizza this is where you go. Listen close. Italian Fiesta... hands down the best! Ricobene's in bridgeport/chinatown. Kroll's on 17th Michigan Ave... Last but not least. Pizza King, Cholie's in Hyde Park is decent.
I loved the part where he kicked the deep dish chicago bread pie!! that was hilarious!! this had to be one of my favorite episodes and my favorite Ronnie Chang Episode to date
Surely wasting a little bit of food for a sketch that amuses millions is minor. The food they threw away in this skit is less than an average restaurant throws away in an hour.
Hey Ronny really good choice for this piece! These guys at Cook County Jail are actually trying to rehabilitate. I can't help myself but notice that many comments are about him throwing food. People nowadays lose focus so fast. For Christ sake its one pizza, it wouldn't solve world hunger, just let it go and focus on the true message of this clip. Oh and I almost forgot, for all of you people being hurt about wasted food...Do something about it! Quit your job, buy one way ticket to Burundi and help firsthand or sign up for Peace Corps.
Am I the only one who fucking loves all pizza? Deep dish, thin crust, New York style, Italian style - I'll devour ALL of that shit. No need to pick sides.
This piece actually demonstrates how "fake news" actually works on media channels as well; you take up a real issue/event and package it according to your liking to illicit a certain response. The main crux of this report should have been the rehab programme at the county jail but all the people became more concerned about the type of pizza
Come for the Pizza stay for the prison reform rehab. At the end of the day, this is a comedy which could have easily talked about how a politician is dumb but they choose to cover difficult ,divisive, boring or complex subjects without ever mocking the interviewees themselves. The point was to make you talk about prison pizza and they hoped that you were smart enough and entertained enough to understand that it was all about prison reform.
1: Every place he went to had thin crust (real) pizza on their menu. 2: Deep Dish is just a thicker crust with the sauce on top, often with a light dusting of Parmesan. 3: I've seen what Europeans (except Italy) call pizza and and Deep Dish is far closer to it than anything the EU could ever bake. Papa Johns is closer to real pizza than what most of Europe calls pizza.
W N Yes. Papa John's IS worthless garbage pizza. That's why I compared NON-ITALIAN European pizza to it. It's a deliberate insult. I mean, are you stupid or just really bad with English? Well, seeing as you think that calling me a fan of my local sports team and style of hotdog would deeply wound me for some reason, it's probably the former rather than the latter.
W N You're telling me to get a life? Really? Yes, I reply to month old comments on months old videos because they annoyed me somehow, but news flash: SO DO YOU! It must be tough keeping warm in that house of glass of yours with so many stone shaped holes in it. Look on the bright side though, at least you didn't start coming at me by badly misreading a post and, when called on it, tried to explain it away by saying "I was only pretending to be dumb to make fun of how dumb you are!" because that would be really pathe- oh wait...
Subject 8 it's weird to cheer for any prison, especially one that is the one of the largest in the country. They cheered like it was a landmark like a famous building, not something they destroys lives.
People like you and me have the privilege of wasting food for a joke. There are so many people out there who go to sleep hungry or die from starvation and can't afford a single morsel of food. Besides, the joke was on "pizza not tasting good". I'm sure the segment would have still been funny even if he didn't actually throw the pizza away. Change starts with 1 person at a time.
Swetha Soundar 40% of all food in U.S ended in Landfill without ever been cook or eaten, check Last week tonight episode on it. Its not a good example to waste food just because you didn't like it taste or how it looks, but do mind this is a comedy show and do so for its comedic value.
Weedle Guy yeah I know... Just wanted to put the issue out there. Comedy shows have a good viewership and platform to make people aware of this issue. They can also set an example.
I’ve eaten pizza from the west and east coast, US, as far south as Cancun Mexico and as far up north as from the areas of early Italian settlements in Canada and if it’s coming out of Chicago your going to have a hard time beating their pizza, thick or thin. It’s a bit of perfection, from the crust to the type of meat and cheese used on the pizzas; they’re stuck right between Wisconsin cheeses, Iowa pork, Midwest hard wheat and their love and expertise for it. The chef in Cancun was from Chicago, it was excellent pizza.
If you want good pizza in the chicago area you need to make sure you order thin crust or you get that deep dish abomination. Deep dish didn't take over everywhere till the early 80's, I didn't like it then and I loathe it now.
Yeah. It's not right to call that fluff "pizza," and it does not cost much to teach inmates in-demand skills and place them back on the path to being contributing members of society, which helps bring down the recidivism rate, but that waiter was absolutely right when he said that Obama and Lincoln were not born in Chicago. Look that up.
ki4n0 why don't these people who are mining for a living do something else maybe pornstar he might eat much booty then I breath and he could donate some money to poor children who can't work
England is My city, it’s also irrelevant to bring up people dying since there is no one dying in the video. Just comparing apples to oranges like you are.
And honestly, looking like you have hemoroids while throwing food against a wall is not funny. Very lame attempt at comedy. Just stick to the inmates making great pizza.
No one is saying that it will destroy the planet and I never said it is not biodegradable!! Even if fishes or marine life will eat, until they do, it is pollution. I know it is a sketch and no one will die from this but still was not the best idea. No need for CAPS cause I can read the other font size perfectly. Oh, throwing eggs at houses it is a crime. Don't know in the US but in Europe it is...
I know they are.. Almost everything is, the difference is the time it takes. And yes, I worry, yes, I donate. Not pizzas but rice, pasta, tuna, etc. Hope you do the same since you cared so much to answer my comment. ;)
This was a really clever way to showcase a program doing good things without being preachy. Kudos!
"It's expensive to incarcerate people. It's not expensive to give them a skill."
Many already have skills.
This needs more likes
The way better quote is: look I know the pizza is great, but that's not how you deal with conflict😂
I felt so sad after seeing pizza go to waste
Siddhant Pandey that abomination isn't pizza
daniel nunez have you actually tried authentic chicago deep dish?
Colossal waste of pizza.
same...well let's say I felt sorry for all the good ingredients that went to waste....but once they were deep dish'd they were lost anyway....sad.....africans could have made a proper pizza out of these ingredients
There is a difference between not wanting food to waste and not being able to afford food, maybe you fucking filipinos cant afford it, but here we can
Funny but heart warming. I wish those inmates a new lease on life. Kudos to the sheriff and the programs that allow the inmates to have hope. Thumbs up to the culinary instructor too.
«It's expensive to incarcerate people, but it's not expensive to give them a skill»
Please someone decorate this man
jails in the US are private and make money. the inmates are not there to get a skill, they are production capital.
If you missed it, the pizza is SOLD to inmates. Everything beyond three awful meals a day, small bar of soap, a travel-sized toothbrush, and a travel sized toothpaste inmates have to purchase. There are voices fighting for PRISON reform, which is long overdue. But the movement for JAIL reform is in its infancy. It's a cause I've recently become associated with. There are far more Americans who go to jail than prison. Prison is for convicted felons. And sadly, every convicted felon I've spoken to who has experienced county jail and prison will say that prison (!) was a more humane experience.

Adam Saxe You Rock!
Yes!!
My wallet hurt watching him throw away untouched Giordano's Pizza.
Mayra Terrazas *a fucking sin*
I honestly wanted to cry. He didn’t even try it :(
I would've kicked his ass,
ivan boii whodislilbitchthinkshe!Z..needs some "southside treatment"!
Never ate it but doesn't look like pizza to me..
This honestly makes me smile that there are people out there who want to improve inmates lives as well as reduce incarnation.
Thats not pizza, that's a fucking casserole.
Michael Bell a delicious fucking casserole
Ian Graber-Stiehl Lol I have nothing aginst your 🍕 but do you have to go to jail to get a thin crust?☺
kevin willems Good ,cuz I have a family reunion comming up in Chicago this summer and I think heavy pizza is a winter thing.😊
kevin willems. I probably will try it , but im a weird eater. Lol
i read that as casserolE
Definitely my favorite Ronny Chieng experience I have seen in his time on the show. Really makes me want to see him featured more often
That Shawshank Redemption reboot looks great.
Even people in the jail dont like dip dish. lolz
Love the parallelism to the movie "The shawshank redemption." One of my all time favourites.
The Pizza was RAW!!!
Awesome. A program that actually helps inmates. Bravo!!!!!
"Deep dish dough dumpster". I love alliteration AND apt descriptions.
As French I don't call that Pizza but Quiche!
Korra Martell quiche doesn't have that much pizza sauce
Ronny Chieng's job is so awesome. I wish I could work for Trevor Noah as a special correspondent!
If prison was the only place that I could get a decent pizza then I would purposely get my self thrown in jail.
I was in chicago recently, they have places where you can get normal pizza.
Good thing it's not. Every place Ronny got Deep Dish to throw at walls from had Thin Crust of that prison's quality on the menu... though its too bad that he told everybody who watched this to avoid all those places with good thin crust that would hire those reformed pizza making prisoners.
I love how this ties back to Stewart and his segment on Chicago Deep dish pizza
ruclips.net/video/LaA5dNFrFMI/видео.html
He is awesome, he is ready for his own show
I just watched the Beyond the Scene in-depth review of this piece. Pizza!!!!
Lol Ronnie is officially my favorite correspondent 🤣
I love The Daily Show's relationship with Chicago Deep Dish Pizza.
Deep dish *what* now?
This is freaking hilarious and as a Chicagoan who LOVES my deep dish. I still thought this was funny.
I wonder how things like this were filmed. Were they on script? And that "that's not how you deal with conflict" quote was gold!
I wish all the prison systems was like this one, give them tools to grow not to kill!
Exactly
Um what I understood from this segment was not about how deep dish pizza is gross, but how this culinary program training the inmates traditional pizza making skills will help them find jobs when they are released. Good for Ronny to showcase inmates taking advantage of programs to better themselves.
Sad that many viewers may not have paid attention to what this segment was really about.
Deep dish genuinely is garbage. But they should just stop calling it pizza. Problem solved. It's a casserole.
Finally someone who agrees with me though I always suggested calling it umami yeist pie xD. Even though I think deep dish pizza is a crime against humanity I don‘t have anything against people liking it, I just don’t want the name of real pizza be dumped on by this abomination
PREACH. You're completely correct.
True, I can't believe that Chicago serves this trash
I agree, its just pasta in a circle. I like thin crust style tho!
Kleavers thems' fighting words
I love deep dish pizza, but that program for inmates is awesome! 👏🏼
I never realized how divisive pizza is! Lol. And to those complaining of waste, tv production y'all. Shit gets wasted left sitting as a prop all the time, and sometimes fake, everything is planned and is a joke. Calm your self. The car was not an "innocent" car. Was part of the production. It's not as funny if it is a prop car and not a random deep dish pizza patron's car.
It's not because he's wasting pizza. It's because he was lying because the joke doesn't hold up to reality. ALMOST EVERY PLACE HE WENT TO HAD THIN CRUST ON THE MENU! Hehe nice perspective sister
Nevermind the pizza, I think the whole thing about Recipe for Change is a great idea. Seems like a great way to, as he said, open their minds and eyes for hope. Awesome!
This is a great program! Wow.
As an Italian from Italy I find your arguments about NYC vs Chicago funny. Naples is the actual capital of pizza.
I would love a continuous loop of Ronny chucking pizzas
What a fabulous program!
I am sympathising so hard with Ronny right now haha.
This may be the GREATEST pizza sketch EVER!!! Too many Palme d'Ors in the world , Just go on give Ronny Chang one now!
Lol the pizza we usually eat is thin crust and cut in squares. Deep dish is usually for occasion.
That was AWESOME
I loved the part where he kicked the deep dish chicago bread pie!! that was hilarious!! this had to be one of my favorite episodes and my favorite Ronnie Chang Episode to date
never heard of deep dish pizza but this story was very moving, god bless Ronny
Haha... The Pizza Redemption! Excellent! 😝
As a Chicagoan, I am saddened by the waste of deep dish but fun fact I work by the bridge he threw the pizza in the way.
Most Chicago skit the daily show will ever have
Seeing food go to waste like that makes me uncomfortable...
Diogo Couto its probably foam or someting
That's America in a nutshell. TV shows, movies, plays, skits waste so much food, seriously.
Diogo Couto then you haven't seen Gordon Ramsay in action.
Surely wasting a little bit of food for a sketch that amuses millions is minor. The food they threw away in this skit is less than an average restaurant throws away in an hour.
Diogo Couto Ever been to a supermarket or a restaurant? Fast food restaurants are the worst.
👵🏻🤣🤣70 yo grama here in Ak, and this guy is hilarious every time on Trevor's show! Prison Pizza, I think this can catch on!! Come and get! 🤣🤣
Hey Ronny really good choice for this piece! These guys at Cook County Jail are actually trying to rehabilitate. I can't help myself but notice that many comments are about him throwing food. Ronnie is hilarious!!!!! I love him!! Too funny!! Why did they give the white guy his own show?! lol (Jordan Klepper)
Am I the only one who fucking loves all pizza? Deep dish, thin crust, New York style, Italian style - I'll devour ALL of that shit. No need to pick sides.
JT Sleazeball Same dude. I just love pizza.

European here: Deep dish isn't pizza.
LowStuff it's more a casserole 🥘

right? it's a casserole!
Good to know the prison provides programs to equip inmates with skills to prepare them when they are back to the society.
Did Cook County Jail just get a applause from the audience in Chicago?
I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Why? (I'm european)
Subject 8 it's weird to cheer for any prison, especially one that is the one of the largest in the country. They cheered like it was a landmark like a famous building, not something they destroys lives.
I think they just specifically cheered on the inmates that participated in these programs and at least tried to make positive changes to their lives.
@James Burgess I guess that some of the inmates there don't know anything about destroying lives.
Probably the best skit you've done all year :)
He could have given the food to a homeless person instead of throwing it in the dustbin :-|
Yeah!! Kill the homeless with a heart attack in the form of a pizza.
Swetha Soundar, wasting ingredients to make “food” that is not edible, is wasting food.
this is the most accurate depiction of how I feel about deep dish pizza
The Deep-Dish Redemption
I grew up around Chicago, not a big fan of deep dish but, those same restaurants make excellent thin and pan as well.
WHY WOULD HE DO THAT TO PIZZA?!
He wouldn't, and he didn't. Because deep dish is not pizza.
Any pizza with a thicker crust and exposed sauce isn't pizza. Don't tell that to the Italians though, They're dedicated to the lie.
"I learned how to become an...um...better leader." Good for you dude lol
Folding a pizza slice while eating is a crime on its own
I’ve eaten pizza from the west and east coast, US, as far south as Cancun Mexico and as far up north as from the areas of early Italian settlements in Canada and if it’s coming out of Chicago your going to have a hard time beating their pizza, thick or thin.
I feel a great disturbance in the food court, like a million perfectly good "pizzas" were thrown into a river and disappeared.
My kids laugh at this bit and it is funny af
Well now we’re having pizza for dinner thank a lot Ronny
I feel like he missed the perfect opportunity to throw a pizza on a roof.
So you know this means that I'm going back into the Daily Show Achives. Lol 😆
You do know it's "Cook" and not "Cooke" right? BTW, I'm a native Chicagoan and like both types of pizza.
That's right, all pizza is good pizza... Unless its bad
it cannot be good pizza if it's not pizza to begin with
Same
Eugene King me too
As a citizen of chicago. Trust me when I say that chicago style deep dish is insanely good.
The disrespect!
Disrespect for what?
for shit apparently.
I know. how dare they call that shit pizza! Chicago should be sued for defamation.
Deep dish pizza is like a diet cheat option from Panera bread. Give me New York style any day.
If you want good pizza in the chicago area you need to make sure you order thin crust or you get that deep dish abomination. Deep dish didn't take over everywhere till the early 80's, I didn't like it then and I loathe it now.
i just love the way you put Shawshank Redemption reference there... EPIC
Yeah. It's not right to call that fluff "pizza," and it does not cost much to teach inmates in-demand skills and place them back on the path to being contributing members of society, which helps bring down the recidivism rate, but that waiter was absolutely right when he said that Obama and Lincoln were not born in Chicago. Look that up.
lazyperfectionist1 yeah but michael Jordan tho?
He's from New York, where they have actual pizza.
You forgot to take your meds again!
...you do understand that this is a comedy show, right?
You do understand what lazy writing is right?
There used to be an Italian restaurent at the end of Pipers Alley in Olde Towne. They had a great deep dish pizza.
Why are you wasting a food.. there is people who are dying without it
That "pizza" would kill people if eaten.
Why are you wasting clean air pointing out obvious statements of people dying of hunger, there people are dying in coal mines without clean air.
ki4n0 why don't these people who are mining for a living do something else maybe pornstar he might eat much booty then I breath and he could donate some money to poor children who can't work
ki4n0 bitch I don't care about mining.. all m saying is don't waste that food someone else needs it. Stop being irrelevent
England is My city, it’s also irrelevant to bring up people dying since there is no one dying in the video. Just comparing apples to oranges like you are.
bless the sheriff and chef for their good deeds
Throwing food away for comedy. Classy.
I love reporter Chang, he just puts his angry twist on Trevor Noah’s calm way of going through news
The disrespect towards deep dish pizza makes me sad
deep dish marinara soup bread bowl makes me sad.
I'm from Ireland, I went to Chicago once, I tried a deep dish pizza from Giordano's, and I loved it.
Food is iconic as their corruption 😂😂😂😱
Ronnie C.!!! You rocked this one but good!
The pizzas coulda been lunch for quite a number of people. And this guy could be more, you know, polite.
I love Ronny Chieng
I LIVE RIGHT NEAR HERE!!
I'm so sorry
S4nt4 Cl4u5 best place in the country by far. Where do you live rural Idaho
I live near here too....😐
errrmergerrrrd
Smiling Lizard Which cell?
This Ronnie dude consistently FUNNY though!
Did you really had to throw good pizza against the wall or into the trash bin ? That's fucking lame.
And honestly, looking like you have hemoroids while throwing food against a wall is not funny. Very lame attempt at comedy. Just stick to the inmates making great pizza.
Chicago deep dish is freaking awesome.
1:05 Meanwhile in southern Bangladesh ...
Waiter, I'd like to order! More of these from the Daily Show, please.
I don't care if you hate deep dish pizza, watching them waste all that food pissed me off.
I'm glad to see that Ronny is continuing Jon's legacy of shitting on Chicago Pizza.
The Daily Show has been right about so many things, but always so, so wrong about deep dish pizza.
Thanks for sharing, Daily Show, good info.
Food being wasted... poluting the river... not one of the finest moments in the Daily Show history..
L
No one is saying that it will destroy the planet and I never said it is not biodegradable!! Even if fishes or marine life will eat, until they do, it is pollution. I know it is a sketch and no one will die from this but still was not the best idea. No need for CAPS cause I can read the other font size perfectly. Oh, throwing eggs at houses it is a crime. Don't know in the US but in Europe it is...
I know they are.. Almost everything is, the difference is the time it takes. And yes, I worry, yes, I donate. Not pizzas but rice, pasta, tuna, etc. Hope you do the same since you cared so much to answer my comment. ;)
Thin-crust pizza is the authentic original pizza from Italy. Props to the sheriff. Rehabilitative justice is the only sensible form of incarceration.
I automatically disliked cuz of the amount of food wasted at the beginning smh
This is a great video, thank you
