  • According to John McWhorter, author of "Winning the Race: Beyond the Crisis in Black America," black activism is lost on today's culture. McWhorter explains his theory of modern activism or what he calls, "therapeutic alienation." This is the act of shaking your fists at the system claiming institutional racism. He and Doug delve into the topics the book covers, exploring the excuses and dependencies history and society have created for black Americans. McWhorter also shares his views on the impact of divisive racial issues such as the hip hop culture and Hurricane Katrina. (Taped 5/9/2006)

I think that the reaction of Sammy Davis Jnr's hug to Nixon had a big impact, the following purge had a big effect on communities. Pushing Robert J Brown away for John Ehrlichman, CORE pushed away from the Whitehouse. I could be wrong. "Black supporters of the president under fire." (New York Times, October 1972) whether you hate or like Nixon they got rid of some of the best lobbyists.

I enjoy listening to much of what John McWhorter says. Yet, I take issue with his discussion on welfare. Most black people are not on welfare; conflating welfare and race in public policy debates may perpetuate many unfortunate stereotypes.

The only way to increase black ownership is to get rid of all the government meddling that makes it nearly impossible for one to start a business and even discourages people. i.e. Why would you need to spend so much money on a license to be a barber? That's only paying tribute to the government in my opinion.

This, too, would be an interesting debate.
Imagine if one day, this guy, Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele debated Marc Lamont Hill, Michael Eric Dyson, and Al Sharpton.
    That would be something!

I'd like to see him debate William Julius Wilson. Wilson puts more emphasis on high black male joblessness as the main thing that has affected black family formation. With the unemployment numbers that black males have it's not surprising that many wouldn't be in the best position to settle down, get married and raise families. My solution is a bigger increase in black business ownership so blacks can create more jobs for themselves.

Stanford John McWhorter should debate Harvard Cornel West. I would pay to see this. The race ideas actually fit into the economic ideas. In other words, capitlalism and socialism. Black people have been marginalized by employers over many, many years. Thus, they will need more help than white people. So, social services are going to be used for higher percentage of black people. I think I would agree with Cornel West more than McWhorter, and I am white.

I think he says that far fewer black families are on welfare now--because, since welfare reform, it is both harder to get on welfare and harder to stay on it. Listen again to the interview. He says this a couple of times.

I agree with much of what he says. However he contradicts everything he says when he states "I don't give a damn about black people being married"..You can't possibly think that the blacks culture isn't related to the decline of the nuclear black family. This is a silly statement from a smart man.
