  • Quick Comparison of 2 great cities north and south of Sydney
I believe Wollongong is a little closer and Newcastle is a little bigger.
Both great cities in my opinion.

Wollongong and Newcastle are both winners as cities, as a small child we lived in Wollongong for a few years so I have fond memories from that time. I enjoyed the video very much 👍cheers

I think Newcastle - it seems more open. Both places are nice to visit.

I prefer Wollongong for its tall mountains that merge into beautiful tall ocean cliffs and proximity to Sydney. Despite the city centre needing some revitalising work, it already has many more ocean view apartments compared to Newcastle and yet it still manages to be more affordable. 'The Gong' is not plagued by the same strict building height limits as 'Newy' and there is plenty of room to build new high-rises due to how spread out the area is. Newcastle's CBD does have a better range of historic buildings, although it is less accessible being built on a peninsula and more vulnerable to flooding. Both cities have an abundance of scenic park space, beautiful beaches and similar crime statistics.

I agree with you, I dont know why wealthy Australian or high income family in Sydney dont live in Wollongong. In the past, Wollongong has the bad name but the same to inner Sydney full of crimes in the 80s. Now 1 bedroom apartment in Ultimo, Chippendale, Pyrmont, surrey hill, redfern cost $1 million dollar.

@@VanTran-ne4yf Definitely, I strongly believe they should connect the two cities with fast rail. That way more people can work and enjoy both cities in a more convenient manner. I’m sure it would help with the cost of living in Sydney as well.

@@BrandonBallin02 The fast train would cost around $10-15 billion for each city . you can build lots of motorway and tunnel . so fast train will never be build unless Wollongong and Newcastle each a population of a million people.

Newy for me but both have their own identity and great features. Newy is warmer and bigger. Beaches are better too in my opinion. The Gong has its beautiful hinterland and lighthouse.

Newcastle/hunter valley has more space for growth/urban sprawl and easier/shorter time needed to transport across mountains. More factories/air pollution, poor people in Wollongong. Newcastle has much larger ammonium nitrate storage than beirut.

Government has no intention to build Wollongong and Newcastle into the major Hub like Parramatta. Covid 19 demonstrate that employee no longer need to come to the office, companies can set up office away from CBD, expensive rent , inconvenience for employee. Secondly, university build campus there to attract international student and tourism development. Government house and departments can relocated Goulburn or Canberra and so on.

The city has a lot of big projects still underway and the place has come a long way already since they added the trams again. Looking forward to Honeysuckle HQ and The Store apartments being built in the coming years.

    Both towns are great.
Newcastle has the most room to grow, CBD is much bigger with a much wider range of places to see. Wollongong much closer to Sydney though.
