  • Join BZ Travel in Episode 36 of our Ultimate World Cruise series as we dock in Newcastle, Australia, just 100 miles north of Sydney. Known as the "Surf City Down Under," Newcastle captivates with its golden sandy beaches and consistent swells, making it a haven for wave riders and beach lovers alike. In this episode, we take you through our early morning arrival and our exploration of this vibrant city that seamlessly blends modernity with nature.
As we dock at the commercial port, we hop on a city shuttle that introduces us to the modern cityscape dotted with new apartment complexes. Our first stop is the visitor center, where we gather maps and advice on must-see local attractions. Highlights include the iconic Anzac Memorial Walk, offering breathtaking views from a cliffside walkway, and the light rail system that makes city exploration a breeze.
We share tips on using the light rail for efficient travel to key spots like Newcastle Beach, where lifeguards watch over weekend crowds and the iconic lifeguard station reminds us of scenes from television. Despite the tempting cliff walk, the midday heat steers us towards more shaded adventures.
Whether you're a surfer, a beachgoer, or simply someone who loves to explore new cities, Newcastle offers a blend of activities that promise a memorable day. From practical travel tips to scenic beach walks, Episode 36 is packed with insights and stunning visuals from one of Australia's hidden gems.

It’s easy to see why Australia ranks so high on quality of life index. It’s a fantastic place to raise a family.

Great view of my city Newcastle. It really is a great friendly and liveable city, pretty safe, great climate year round. Unfortunately with the weather being warm, you did not venture just a little further south from the Bogey Hole to the Anzac Memorial Walk, one of the real city highlights. If you had more time, a trip up to the vineyards (40 minutes) or whale watching at Nelson Bay (60 minutes). Also plenty of great coffee shops and restaurants around the harbour and beaches. Well worth a return visit without the Sydney crowds

I used do quite a bit of work at Newcastle. Around the old city centre and beach, it really is a very attractive part of the world (not so as you venture inland around to industrial area) and the beach is so close by. What you seem to have missed is the Anglican Cathedral, high on the hill just above the city. It's a steepish climb, steep enough to warrant some steps in the footpath, but once you're there, the view is fantastic - east over the Pacific, north along the long line of Stockton Beach, the river mouth and old city below you and then inland past the factories to residential areas. The Cathedral is worth a visit also, designed by a leading architect in ecclesiastic buildings, and with a very well finished interior.

We enjoyed Newcastle, the Cathedral looked that will be interesting to visit but climbing the hill in the heat of the day and with recent knee surgery discourage us.

@@bztravel Understood. If you're back there and have driven, there's plenty of space
to park in the Cathedral grounds. Hope your recovery goes well.

Newcastle local here: the walk you referred to at 4:12 was not the ANZAC Walk that the guide suggested to you. The walk you pointed out is a walk you can’t do at the moment that connects the beach to King Edward Park.
The pool you went to just reopened in December. It was ocean baths.
Newcastle is a regional city but it feels like a small town because you can usually meet someone who knows someone else.
Shame you couldn’t get to stuff further out like Blackbutt Reserve.

Great clip of a city that gets less attention than it deserves. Formerly a steel city, it has become increasingly gentrified since the large steelworks closed in 1999. The port is on the Hunter River which extends westwards into the broad and pretty Hunter Valley. Its main attractions are its numerous and gorgeous vineyards and wineries. Less picturesque are the occasional gigantic open cut coal mines with trains constantly transporting export coal to the port. If you see military jets flying around they're probably F-35s from the combined Newcastle Airport / RAAF Base Williamtown not far to the north.
For the history buffs, Fort Scratchley (not far from the city centre) is famous for engaging Japanese submarine I-21 offshore in May 1942. 34 shells from the I-21's deck gun hit around the city area but did little damage. Within minutes of Fort Scratchley opening fire, the shelling ceased and the submarine escaped. It was one of a group of five large submarines, carrying midget submarines and reconnaissance floatplanes that attacked Sydney, Newcastle and coastal shipping around that time.

Wow I had no idea - when I was in Oz (ok 30 years ago) I remember Newcastle's reputation was as an industrial / coal town, and literally only stopped there in the middle of the night on a bus - I think in those years though, it's probs changed a lot and I expect that ship full of coal was going to China...the worlds manufacturing hub where green isn't an issue... handy that eh?! Glad you had a good day - and how nice to go back to the ship and have a swim and relax - here's to the next stop!
