  • What's up, people! I'm back with another Morten Harket solo track from his 1995 album Wild Seed, and this time we listen to "Half in Love Half in Hate." I found this title suggestive of several possibilities, but the real story here is the sonics and Morten's singing. Wow, this is probably my favorite so far, so join me as we enjoy this one. Cheers!

I love listening to Morten's solo albums in the winter, especially when it's snowing. No doubt because Morten sings with his soul and warms hearts....

“Everything’s too late, too late for love …and suddenly too late for hate”…..I have always believed that love and hate are strong emotions which are two sides of the same coin, but they’re passionate feelings and are not what really kills a relationship in the end…it’s indifference. So too late for either love or hate I interpret as indifference…the saddest of all feelings towards someone you’ve previously loved when a relationship has irretrievably broken down. The lyrics convey everything we need to know about where this relationship is going and Morten’s voice delivers the words in a subdued and rather restrained and almost regretful manner, his voice beautifully honey-toned of course, as usual. It’s a great song to listen to in the dark late at night…

Well said Marjorie !! I listened to this in the midst of a horrific break up (at the time) and it was brutal. Such emotion boiled down to just... indifference, all captured in musical form as a work of art.

This album uses a very rich and lush palette to paint it's narrative. What's most impressive imo is that it manages to do it using very subtle key changes and very small gestures. It doesn't feel the need to throw out grandiose gestures but still manages to be just as impactful as the work done with A-Ha, just in a different way.

The lyrics are unbelievable on this song: "Tell me just another lie, now we're woven under ice..."
Loved this album, with my personal favourite upcoming, Los Angeles...

Los Angeles is also one of my favourites, but I am not sure if I like it more than this one. 🙂

They are musically gifted, all three members of -ha. It seems impossible for me not to like what they do, and when they as always deliver meaningful lyrics I'm all in. It's been less than a year since I rediscovered the band, and even though I've heard most of the catalogue, I still need time to discover the music properly.
I have finally got hold of all Morten's albums, and have listened to them all, but until now my focus has been on a-ha. That said, it is great to delve deeper into Morten's solo work with you, Matt. I've loved everything on this journey so far.
I am now working on getting hold of Magne and Pål's solo projects, and have got hold of some. Including signed copies from both Morten and Magne, which I am happy to pay a little extra for. I'll stick to music. If I win the lottery, I will consider a woodcut from Magne.

Thank you so much for the thoughts, perspectives, and insight, Kari. So very happy you found my channel just as my a-ha journey kicked off. And cheers, somewhere down the road, I would love to hear the other guys' solo projects, maybe Magne in particular (given my love of synth-work).

@@mattsnider2667 I think you would like the Waaktaar & Zoe album, too. World of Trouble. It reminds me of an a-ha album with a female singer.

I'm ashamed to say I haven't listened to much of Morten's solo material. I've flicked through Brother and absolutely love, love, love Do You Remember Me. I've heard Brodsky Tune too and didn't like it at first but it's grown on me as I came to discover what it's about (and it's an amazing showcase for his vocals). I have to qualify all this by saying I haven't listened to huge amounts of Magne's and Pal's solo material either, though what I've heard I do like, especially Magne's. So it's not a slight to Morten personally!
Anyway, I'm enjoying experiencing Morten's discography alongside you, Matt. And this song was incredible. I know straight away it's going to make it onto my "best of" playlist. It gave me major Chris De Burgh vibes, and for anyone who only associates CDB with the atrocity that is Lady in Red I implore you to listen to Spanish Train And Other Stories. Suffice to say, a comparison to Chris De Burgh is a huge compliment ❤

I hear you! 😄 I didn't mean to put any pressure on you, but as this is one of my favourites on the album I was expecting it a bit more eagerly than others. 😉 I have said before this song is, for me, related to Spanish Steps (Morten solo) and To Let You Win (a-ha - written by Morten and Håvard Rem) in theme and mood, but of the three this is by far the one I like most.

Haha, no worries at all, and please do pressure me if I take longer than a few days (because my short-term memory can be dodgy). But seriously, I do really appreciate your comments, enthusiasm, and positivity. So big thanks, and more solo Morten coming!

Also I completely see that thematic connection now! Between all three songs, indeed. Thanks for that insight. :)
