Bruh... You don't know... When Mr Miyagi tells him to show him the moves... I was 8 when this came out. Our collective heads exploded. To most kids in the west, this was our first exposure to martial arts. We didn't know the alternate training thing. Some schools tried to ban us doing moves from the film. Tried. 😊 Especially that final kick. This is aaaaaaall anyone did at recess for like 6 months.
Same here dude, my mind was blown
Confirmed.
I'm 43. Can confirm.
Dido with the final kick 👍😏🥋🦵!!! Also trying to mimic the standing on the post and doing the kicks beach scene ⛱️ when we were kids!! I couldn't wait until the 31-35 mins into the video 😏
When Daniel gets pissed off 😡 about *ALL* of the chores he had to do. Then when he was *SHOWN WHY* by Mr. Miyagi!!! *Always look eye* 👀 🙂. Can't wait until the next Karate Kid....
And only to find out the crane kick is legit finished. See Lyoto Machida Vs Randy Couture.
Pat Morita (Mr Miyagi) was a stand-up comedian and was in the show Happy Days (with Fonzie) before Karate Kid. A very funny man who turns in an amazing dramatic performance.
I couldn't wait until the 31 - 35 mins 😏 When Daniel gets pissed off 😡 about *ALL* of the chores he had to do. Then when he was *SHOWN WHY* by Mr. Miyagi!!! *Always look eye* 👀 🙂. Can't wait until the next Karate Kid....
Before that, he was on Sanford and Son with Redd Foxx
@@tugga235ii Only ever caught a few episodes and I don't think he was in them. I'll keep an eye out if I ever binge it
🥼loved thid movie ! Great commentary.
And he was great in the cameo he had in M.A.S.H episodes😊
At 18 William Zabka (Johnny) was the only teenager in the main cast, Ralph Macchio (Daniel) was 22, Elizabeth Shue was 20 and the Cobra Kai guys were 22 and 23.
Ralph Machio is, actually, older than the guy that played Terry Silver in the third one, yet Terry is supposed to be an adult that served in Vietnam with Kreese and Daniel is a high schooler.
@@deacongowan117wow, that’s insane, but he STILL looks way younger than his real age, it’s amazing.
I always found it funny that in Karate Kid 3, Terry Silver's actor Thomas Ian Griffith is the same age as Ralph Macchio, despite their age gap in the movie being like 30 years lol. If you look at them now in Cobra Kai it's still the same deal lmfao. Some people age differently I suppose. I'm 28 but I still look 17.
@@deacongowan117wow
@@jimberjamber8540 hey just smoke lots of cigarettes and drink too much like I did and you'll age I promise!! j/k don't do that.
This movie is really about the relationship/friendship between Miyagi and Daniel. The karate and fighting is just the plot part, but that mentor/student relationship is the heart.
The Theme!!
The best movies are not really about what it says it's about.
Rocky, not a boxing movie but a love story with boxing.
Shawshank Redemption, not a prison movie, but a friendship movie within a prison.
Just two examples, you get the drift.
Noriyuki Pat Morita was and remains the reason i entered the Martial Arts at the age of 8 back in 2004. Since then I became one of the youngest back to back Tennessee state champions in weapons competition in the state's history. These films are much more than hype or nostalgia..they are lessons.

I just love the vibe of older movies. Always a strong message, the script always feels so natural, the chemistry between the characters is great.
KK 2 is good, KK 3 is decent, the Cobra Kai series is one of the best continuations of an older series ever made.
I would love to see them all.
true other then the CW's crisis on infinite earths and Spiderman No way home and maybe Drstrange multiverse of madness
"I wonder what plumbing would teach you." Dude, I busted a gut laughing at that. Thank you.
Same here.
Leo wonders, "What does plumbing teach you?"
It teaches you how to lay some PIPE, if you know what I mean!😉
Absolutely do Karate Kid 2 and 3! Love your reactions and I love how much you’re enjoying many of the movies I grew up loving! After watching the Karate Kid movies, you should totally watch Cobra Kai, it picks up with Daniel and Johnny in the modern day and it’s an incredible series! I’m afraid to say too much, I don’t want to spoil anything, but suffice to say, Johnny is an amazing character! It brings back people and events from all three movies that Daniel was in, so be sure to watch those before the series
Skip 3 and 4 and the Jaden smith garbage. Watch cobrai kai
@@chrischar9428he gotta watch 3 especially since it ties into Cobra Kai season 4 and 5. But he can definitely skip part 4

Mr MIYAGI - “DETROIT!” 🤣🤣💪

One of the best films from the 80s.. and the ending is perfect, it ends abruptly but there's no story left to tell.. the freeze frame on Miyagi gives me chills every time..
But it's awesome that part 2 picks up right where 1 left off. :)
@@4MINGTHOUGHTSI loved the second one as a kid but it didn’t age well IMO. I think the quality gets worse with all the films, and the one with Hilary Swank is, we can usually all agree, absolutely terrible.
Never too late to learn martial arts, it has been part of my life for a long time and I can’t picture living without it
One of my family’s favorite movies of all time… the nostalgia is insane…can’t wait to share this with you 💛💛
You'll be happy to know the 2nd movie picks up right after this one-- literally in the parking lot afterward. Other than that, I don't remember much else about it, but I look forward to watching you watch it :)
Dude, I could've sworn you'd seen this! You are in for a *treat* and a ride on one of the greatest franchises EVER! Part 2 was a formative experience for me.
I think the first episode of the cobra Kai television show might be one of the best reboots of all time.
The scene where Johnny is getting drunk, watching TV and iron eagle comes on…. I died 😅
CHAPPY!!
Cobra Kai ain’t no reboot, it’s a sequel!
I fully agree. I would say it is THE best continuation if that title wasn’t irretrievably held by Star Trek TNG.
Eagle Fang never dies
The Karate Kid movies are classic. Here's some other Ralph Macchio movies you should check out, Leo:
- The Outsider's
- My Cousin Vinny
May I add Crossroads to that list?
Macchio played one of two yoots in My Cousin Vinny.
There's a picture out there with Mary Mouser and Tanner Buchanan that play Daniel's and Johnny's kid and have shirts on that day Yoot 1 and Yoot 2.
@@RandomNonsense1985 Toowhaat? :D
Karate Kid 2 is epic! Please do part two!!! Love your reactions…I always call my folks in the room to watch with me!!! 😂😂😂
Man this movie hits you in the feels and nostalgia. Such great acting and interacting between Ralph and Pat.
I seen this when I was a kid. Still a great movie. This got so many kids into martial arts. Actually part 2 was my favorite one.
So happy to hear you've been out living life and traveling. Hope you and the family are doing well Leo!
I think you should do Part 2. It continues the relationship dynamic that made the fist movie stand out so much while being different enough to still be fresh. You can probably skip part 3 and 4, though.
Unless he decides to watch "Cobra Kai"... He will need to see part 3 before he can understand seasons 4 and 5 of CK... Whether he views any of it online or not...
I agree! 👏🏼
If it helps, I began training karate when I was 41 yo. Yes, there's still time, you're a young guy still.
Karate has something for everybody. There's the sports karate for those who like that, there's the philosophical part, the meditation part, the self defense part, it works all the muscles you know you have plus some you don't even knew about, it works your brain, your concentration, your focus, your balance.
Funny enough, I wanted to do karate since I was a child and watched this movie. It took me over 30 years to actually do it.
I think I may be more excited about this review than anything else you've done. This series and Cobra Kai are so special to me.
I hope you love it and continue the journey!
yeah I actually kinda cheered when I saw the thumbnail. Hit play with a "LET'S FUCKIN GO!!"
@@Montana-tw7im Yeah, shoot.
You definitely need to watch the sequels. They all have a special place in my heart, but as an adult I notice how well made they are too. Part 2 is my Favorite because you learn a lot more about Mr. Miyagi
The drunk scene was almost cut from the final movie but it was kept in and got pat nominated for an oscar
Great reaction! 😊
RIP always to Pat Morita(Mr. Miyagi)!
I've been looking forward to this one.
Absolutely love this movie! One of my favorite Ralph Macchio movie.
Fun Fact: Ralph Macchio(Daniel) got to keep the yellow car from this movie. And he still has it.
Definitely one of my favorite scenes is when Daniel realized that when Mr. Miyagi was making him do all of those chores, he was really learning karate techniques. That whole scene when Mr. Miyagi was putting Daniel through those karate drills.
And of course, the 'crane kick' at the end was fantastic.
I very highly recommend watching the other two sequels, "Karate Kid Part 2 & 3". And then maybe eventually watching the Netflix follow-up series "Cobra Kai". But the two sequel movies are a must watch.
Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊
Agree 👍💯%.... You should definitely check out The Karate Kid II & III movies. Just be sure to check these 2 Movies 🍿🎥 BEFORE getting into the Cobra Kai Series. Enjoyed the reaction man. Keep 'em coming
I love how you excluded The Next Karate Kid, which is technically the 4th movie but it sucked so we all pretend it doesn't exist. I blame that travesty on Swank. She's just not likable in that movie.
Pat was not only a good actor but wasn't offended that he was cast most times as the " Asian guy" . He was proud to show proper representation to his family heritage and he was known to be not only an actor but a comedian also. He was on mash, happy days, the love boat, the Cosby show and so much more. Great guy and funny actor :-)
As a young Gen Xer I can confirm that kids, like myself, everywhere were practicing the crane, wax on/wax off, paint the fence and of course Mr. Miyagi's magical healing technique by clapping his hands, rubbing them together til burning hot then ahhhhhh feel the warm healing. 🙌
This movie had a ton of influence at least here on the west coast....I started to see more and more martial art studios opening up and later in college you started seeing all the different martial arts options for a P.E. credit!!!
P.S. Leo...And after you watch a couple more of the original karate kid movies then move onto the series Cobra Kai...it's better than I thought it would.☺
Daniel’s mom going on a rampage against both Johnny and Kreese would make for a great movie in itself.
47:42 *Dutch* is played by *Chad McQueen,* son of legendary actor *Steve McQueen.*
48:19 *Darryl Vidal,* real life black belt, he filled in for Mr. Miyagi when the scenes were too rough for Pat Morita, like some shots when he fights the Cobra Kai guys after they pin Daniel against the fence; he helped with the fight choreography and created the *Crane Kick* for the movie.
I was born in 78. The lessons in this movie taught me so much back then. Probably saved my life. It's the deepest martial arts movie ever made, imho.
Its good to see you thriving. You make a lot of people happy.
I actually love the second movie more... LOVED it! But after living in Japan, hearing the non-Japanese actors pretending to be native Japanese speakers is physically painful to me now. 😅
I know what you mean. I lived in Japan for five years, and the dialogue in the second one is definitely hard to watch. I still love it, but it’s not the same as it was when I was a kid.
it's ok to love the second one more but... I dont think it's superior to the first. I think the third one is better than the second, better antagonist. Second one is a bit cringe with that instrument.
@@playthroughcinemayeah I loved the second one as a kid, but as I grew up and learned what makes great films have such high rewatch factor, I realized that the second film did not age well. At all. And the third one is even worse. The quality of the writing goes down a ton, the plots are thin, the actors are not great, etc. The second and third are fun for what they are, but they pale in comparison to the first. The sequels are some very obvious cash grabs. Just my two cents. And yes, I grew up in the 80’s with these films.
@@butkusfan23 lucky to grow up in the 80s... I was born in 89 lol... just missed out. I've always wondered do I count as an 80s kid? I mean I was born in the 80s but... I didn't experience it so I guess I'm a 90s kid? ah I dont know!
yh the first will always be the best
@@playthroughcinemaI was born in 79 but always referred to as an 80s kid , so you are 90s lol🤷
You gotta watch #2. The second one is my personal favorite.
Aye did karate as a kid and to get my black belt one of the tests were they made me fight five of my sensi at once in a surrounding situation i got kicked in the face and got a black eye my step dad said my head came up and my emotion on my face was completely changed and then I went off lmao it was go time xD but yeah this movies moved me as a kid and Mr Miyagi is such an OG and karate teaches great lessons. Never look for a fight only fight in left defense or in defense of another and never to cause harm
Always a pleasure watching your content, Leo.
7:54 That's "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama. Being in this movie really helped their band.
The teacher didn’t just teach Daniel. Daniel taught him as well. There’s the heart of the whole thing.
"I wonder what plumbing would show you..." LOL!!! You kill me Mr. V
The ending is pretty abrupt, but it's a great lead-in for the second movie.
The Cobra Kai show was a great revisit to these characters, and it was really interesting to see everything from Johnny's point of view.
Miyagi's wife was in an American concentration camp, known as internment camps, for Japanese-Americans and immigrant Japanese, set up by the US government in WW2. It's a history we rarely discuss.
Part II is a must. In fact when I showed this flick to my nephew I immediately just showed him the first 10 minutes of Part II because it picks up in the parking lot....
Mr. Miyagi losing his wife and child in an American internment camp while serving in the military is such a sad detail that was surprisingly almost cut 😢
Yo Leo this trilogy was amazing Mr. Miyagi & Daniel bond was special glad u reacting to this you always bring that heat baby 💯🔥
The mentor-student relationship dynamic is definetly the heart and soul of these movies.
Its a huge part of why Cobra Kai managed to be a rare case of a sequel series actually being good.
Thanx for doing this one Leo. It's a childhood favorite, and I enjoyed this reaction immensely.
Great film choice here, brother! You're going down a badass rabbit hole. Parts 2 and 3 are classics too. After that, check out _'Cobra Kai'_ as well! Johnny and Daniel reprise their roles with some really cool cameo surprise appearances woven in there.
I suggest you watch _'The Next Karate Kid'_ *ONLY* to remember Pat Morita [Mr. Miyagi] but, be warned, the story in that one is garbage. As for the Jackie Chan/Jaden Smith remake of this movie? Again, it's there. Not bad [Chan is great] but, the original still reigns supreme. It was passable but, an unnecessary remake...
Check out Part 2 for all you think you missed after the tournament.
Hi Mr V, this is gonna be great. Never seen this for years. Hope you enjoyed it. Hugs to Bella and love to you and your family.❤
Ralph did a eulogy at Pat's funeral as they were great friends and end it with "forever my sensei" 😢
Ahhh, a comfort movie for me! 💚
*You need to come to North Carolina*! 🤗
Upset that it cold ended at the end of the fight? Well, Karate Kid II begins LITERALLY right after the fight. LET'S GO LEO!
This movie was one of the things that made my tomboy self😅 I even have a vintage Mr Miyagi t-shirt that so many dudes wanted to get from me. He is a legend from our childhoods. Love the original Karate Kids ✊Too classic not to "wax on, wax off" forever!
brother, you have no idea how real it was to roll a car into run.... CLUTCH!
Always loved Elisabeth Shue as an actress and she's a beauty. What a lot of people don't know is that her brother is also an actor and was one of the Cobra Kai in this. He was only seen at the dojo and had no lines. Andrew Shue is best known as Billy on Melrose Place and played pro soccer. He also had small roles in Adventures in Babysitting and Cocktail with his sister
For anyone who doesn’t know, that medal of Mr. Miyagi’s that Daniel holds up is the Medal of Honor. It’s the highest award for bravery you can receive in the US military.
Important to know Miyagi & his family were locked up in concentration camps in the US 🇺🇸 when the war started. Males were allowed to go fight against Japan, Germany, & the Axis powers to prove their loyalty. While he was out fighting a decorated military career, his family passed away in the camps. Look up Fort Minor. They did a song about it. Sad but true, these things really happened on our soil.
Dutch (Chad McQueen) is the son of the late actor Steve McQueen (was in the 60's and 70's). He (Steve) died in an auto accident in 1980. The referee does know martial arts and choreographed the Karate Kid movies. There were several in the tournament that are actually trained in martial arts as well as some of the actors. This one and the second one are my favorites of the series. I haven't seen Cobra Kai (Started on RUclips but is now on Netflix). Pat Morita was fantastic in the Miyagi role! They initially didn't want him for the role! Lots of lessons learned!! Do part 2!!! Shows a bit more history of Miyagi as well!!
Same ❤❤❤❤ Was also 8/9 yrs old. Loved this original best, but also enjoyed the 2nd and 3rd, too. Love seeing the 80s movies re-lived.
Please continue with Karate Kid II - III and with Cobra Kai. You won't regret it!
Yes! This! Two is amazing three is...meh. BUT wtbs you still gotta watch it before you can move on to Cobra Kai which is really great. Skip #4 though. Much as I live Hillary Swank...oof this one was just a money grab for the franchise.
@@jenniferrodriguez53374 is the best lol
MR MIYAGI IS THE 🐐🐐😂🤣
This one and KK2 were two of my survivor movies.. In the late 80's with my parents I was living in a foreign country as the only american girl in a four hour radius. The VHS tape barely could play by the time I returned back to the states from rewatching it so many times.
Classic movie and it's still really good!!!💚
The death of Mr. Miyagi's wife and child is even more tragic, since it's implied that they died from preventable causes due to the lack of medical care at Manzaner one of the 10 Japanese Concentration Camps setup by the US during WW2. His family was forced into the camps, where they then died despite the fact that Miyagi himself volunteered for combat and won the Medal of Honor.
Yes! Please do all the movies! And please do The Last Dragon from 1985!
I fell in love with karate because of this movie. Been training for 17+ years now and my husband and I train others. I would love to teach you and, no, you're not too old to learn. Be blessed!
@@Montana-tw7im sure. What's up?
I couldn't stop laughing when you said "I wonder what plumbing will show you" lmao
Glad you were so invested in this. It’s a great film.
Also plumbing teach technique Lay the Pipe. 😂
Leo, I’ve been here for years and you finally made it to my favorite movie of all time.
My family moved around a lot when I was a kid so being the new kid at school and getting bullied was something that was very common.
As an adult, I kept noticing something weird -
At one point in the film Ali asks if she can drive Daniel‘s car, and he says yes. she seems amazed by this and he comments that: “hey, it’s the 80s”
I LOVE THAT YOU NOTICED THIS TOO!
I always thought this was a bit of an odd thing to say.
In karate kid II, after Miyagi‘s home is destroyed, Daniel gets upset and exclaims that this type of violent behavior can’t be allowed because “it is the 80s”
For some reason I always found these two scenes kind of ridiculous in how American and 1980s “optimistic” they are.
Recognize Stillwell from The Boys? Love this movie, and the two sequels. Mr. Miyagi is the GOAT. Cobra Kai is a great series too, and the episodes are short, so it's easy to knock them out a few at a time if you need. Just get through the 3rd movie first.
When Daniel is going to school on the bike, the song playing is “Cruel Summer”. I’m 43, easily one of my favorite songs. Watched KK when I was like in Kindergarten. Great react! Can’t wait for part 2!
Glad you FINALLY watched this pop culture classic. Karate Kid is definitely somewhere on the all-time must watch list.... and YEP.... he definitely "went Crane on him" with that final move. 😂😅
Can wait for you to work your way up to the kobra kai TV series it will blow your mind and is heavily tied in with the first 3 movies so definitely pay attention to the characters
the song u were vibing to, is "cruel summer" by bananarama
I think the most touching scene in this film is when we see Mr. Miyagi getting toasted while he remembers being a soldier in the U.S. Army being told that his wife and child had died in an American Japanese internment camp because of the very government he was fighting for. This country is some piece of work.😤
I'm so glad that Ralph Macchio fought to keep that scene from being cut from the film. RIP Noriyuki 'Pat' Morita.
I am a huge fan of the Karate Kid Series and feeling old but LOVING watching Cobra Kia🤣! I was 7 when this one was in theaters! It is just a great movie! The 80s was the best! ❤️
They was real tough 'till the maintenance man fixed them... 😂😂😂
The only version that I watch. The sequel isn't bad, but the 3rd is awful. The remake never grabbed me, and I like Jackie Chan. Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita from Happy Days have incredible chemistry. The wax on, wax off stuff is cliched now, but for 1984, it was really well written. Oh yeah, and Elizabeth Shue was hot.
Jackie Chan is great, even if many don't like the film, I can't understand it (mainly because the kung fu fights and the emotional scenes are amazing), but I respect it.
I almost pissed myself laughing when you said " I wonder what Plumbing will show ya"///ahahahah
These feel good movies from back in the day we’re done so well. They happened organically, and not forced like how movies are now days. Same with ninja turtles, movies that taught us kids life lessons and how to treat people good and do the right thing. They truly don’t make them like they used to.
Do the whole series ^^
Leo... THE STORY IS NOT OVER! I actually enjoy Karate Kid II even more than the first, and the third is silly but I love that one too. So, I say do them all, and I'll be here to watch them. I'll also echo some of the other comments that say you should consider doing the TV show Cobra Kai. It's more Karate Kid stories with new characters and old ones. It really does the films respect and justice but I'm not gonna spoil anything. Just give it a chance!
im so happy you have started this journey of these movies and maybe even the show as this series as always held a special place for me
21:10: I took Shotokan karate for years…and we did pushups on our knuckles, on our fingertips, and on our wrists. And that was every class, as part of our warmup.
You've got to do Crossroads with Macchio it's a great movie
Hell yeah bit of Steve Vai
ANYTHING directed by Walter Hill is great, so this has my endorsement as well.

@@ITSMRVIDEO-rg9msLooking good, sir!
This movie was a favourite of mine as a kid and Leo this is why i love your channel you give it the great reaction only you can. Love and peace out
I was only around 8 when this was released. It was kids favorite for years. But what it reminds me of now is when I was going through a particularly bad time in my life in my life and my son was around 14. And I never watched this with him but he had watched the new one. But during that time he would randomly text me the song "You're the Best Around", especially when i was struggling. It helped more than he'll ever know. And to this day i still don't know why he chose that song.
Man this one brings me back. Haven’t seen this movie in forever, Cobra Kai is a good follow up to this! Still waiting for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas not many have reacted to that one and I doubt any of your fellow reactors have watched it.
If you liked this one, I definitely recommend the others, 2, 3, and even The Next Karate Kid even if its a bit of a step down. The successor Netflix series set many years later, Cobra Kai, named after Kreese's dojo is also possibly one of the best examples of fan service out there.
Cobra Kai is awesome! Amazing script writing, character development and acting!
I second this, all the way. Even if Karate Kid 3 and Next Karate Kid are "Bad", etc. Whatever the case may be, they're still watchable and the former is also important if you do plan on watching the Cobra Kai series. Trust me, it'll be worth it.
Part 2 has to be next. It’s awesome! Glad you finally got around to these 🤘
This series was the only thing missing from this channel. As long as you dont skip cobra kai after you finish the movies
Leo, you should definitely do the sequel but also do the Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan remake from 2010! Not as good as this one but still enjoyable and yo always say you wanna visit China the remake will make you wanna go even more cause its set in China.
Bro you should def join a fighting gym (whichever martial art you want) and you are definitely not close to being too old to join. Most people at the one I went to many had new people coming from 40's and later. The gyms are really supportive environment too, they're very welcoming.
Up!!!
This choreography is passable if you're a child watching in the 1980s I guess.
Still an awesome movie!
So glad you did this one! Still so good. Your reactions are always the best!
Great reaction man. My personal favorite is Karate Kid Part 2. It really highlights the mentor student relationship really shines in part 2. I don't think you'll be disappointed watching 2.
I haven't seen this since before I Watched Cobra Kai, and the detail that his cousin Louie in the show is (naturally) named after his uncle Louie from a throwaway line in this movie is quite the attention to detail to the writers' credit. The continuity is wild.
I appreciate your allowing the story to unfold at its own pace rather than trying to get ahead of it. Thanks for sharing your experience! Liked and subscribed!
"It devalued the whole place, Johnny's there" LOL that had me on the floor! I second watching the second, it's a great sequel! Third as well. :D Love your reactions!
Born-80, remember using the belt from my bathrobe "sparring" with a friend mimicking this movie. Back when I was around 10yo this was a really cool flick😜😅
