You guys need to watch the other 2 Karate Kid movies before watching Cobra Kai, or you will miss a lot of other characters development from those 2 movies that show up in Cobra Kai.
Great video. One of the things that I think you missed because the historical context was not brought out enough here at 1:10:25 is that during world war 2, Japanese Americans were rounded up and put into containment camps. Mr. Miyagi was serving his country proudly and only to have at that time a report from his senior officer and then be given a telegram of this horrible event while he was away serving. His pregnant wife was sent to an internment camp. There she died and his unborn son died all the while he served the US. The crushing loss of his wife and unborn child is even worsened that he got the news from an internment camp - once you realize this, it adds so much more to Mr. Miyagi. Daniel became somewhat of a substitute to the unborn son for Mr. Miyagi was to have. Very deep and embedded into the US's own mistakes.
The Military Unit Miyagi served with became the most highly decorated Unit for its Size and Length of Service in US History. Miyagi was also the recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest decoration a US Soldier could receive for actions in Combat.
fun fact: ron thomas (bobby brown) is a former world champion in jujitsu and it the crane kick on the beach was done by the man who played vidal in the tournament
I live in Hawai'i, where Asian culture is a big part of life, and there is an understood difference between Okinawa and Japan. Also a big part of our history is 442nd Infantry/WWII...
I grew up in the 80’s, graduating high school in 1989 and yes, I can tell you it was AWESOME, we had all this stuff and more! Didn’t realize how good we had it at the time. My kids all wish they grew up in the 80’s. 😊
Actually, I knew we had it that good just by the music we had on the radio. I knew we were making our mark on history when it was happening. My dad even told me my generation was doing things the right way. Our values of hard work, buying our own sh1t, respect for older generations and toughness which we learned thru bullying. We were taught by good teachers that the real world is cruel and to defeat it, you had to take a lot of punches and keep getting back up (Rocky movies show this).
AC was very common in cars in the 80's unless you got base model of a compact or subcompact but even with those AC in many cases was a dealer installed option that many people got.
Elizabeth Shue was so funny asking Daniel how to juggle the soccer ball because she was an amazing soccer player. She actually played on a boys team because she was so good. Her brother (also an actor) actually played professional soccer.
Andrew was also in this movie. I believe his sister got him the part as an extra. He's one of the Cobra Kai kids. You can only really see him once on the left of the squared when they're sparring
Fun fact: The Filipino guy who was Johnny’s semifinal opponent in the tournament actually doubled for Pat Morita in the scene where Miyagi is practicing the Crane kick at the beach - IIRC, he say he donned a wig and was the one you actually see doing the move.
If you all want to start watching Cobra Kai, the majority suggests you watch ALL the Karate Kid movies first - you have a ways to go. They're three Karate Kid movies and one called The Next Karate Kid featuring Hilary Swank. If you do not watch the rest of the movie series, please be warned you will miss out on MANY REFERENCES from the Karate Kid movies in Cobra Kai. So to avoid any confusion I would highly recommend continue watching KKII, KKIII and The Next Karate Kid.
The $2.50 for lunch was for 2 lunches which is about right. In the late 70's, in the same school system, we were paying around $1.25-$1.35 for a school lunch.
We know lol we’ve been told since the first episode of cobra Kai went live on RUclips. We’ve already watched karate kid 2 and will watch karate kid 3 before we start cobra kai s3
@@3rdstreetreactionsyou should probably watch The Next Karate Kid as well which is part 4. It's good in its own way has mr. Miyagi. I wrote another comment suggesting it because the main character of Julie Parrish played by Hilary Swank in her breakout role considering the first four seasons of Cobra Kai I don't think anyone would be surprised that she makes an appearance and I would say she is expected. I see no point in taking a shortcut in this narrative as it is a nice aside and more of Pat Morita as mr. Miyagi if nothing else. I strongly feel that somehow that movie and its characters at least in part is going to play an important role in season 5. They pretty much have already told us that that is the case but nothing official.
The impressive mustachioed referee is Pat E Johnson, he did the martial arts choreography for the film and trained all of the actors. He’s extremely accomplished in martial arts (he trained under Chuck Norris in the 60s) and worked on a ton of films. Fun reaction, I look forward to the Cobra Kai reactions!
I really enjoyed this reaction, there's no pretense or mugging for the camera or overreacting to stuff, just how the movie actually made you feel. Very excited to watch your Cobra Kai reactions!
I was a teenager in the 80s. My car had air conditioning. My house had air conditioning since the 70s! And I saw this movie in the theater when it came out too.
It's important to note that Mr Miyagi's wife and baby son died in childbirth specifically because she was detained in an anti-Japanese internment camp here in the US, even as he fought as a Sgt in the US Army.
Which is historically inaccurate because all you had to do to not be in an internment camp was denounce the Emperor. Typically the older generation Japanese would not so their younger children would voluntarily go to the internment camps to take care of them, even though they themselves would have denounced the emperor and wouldn't have had to be there. Bet ya didn't know that.... and the reason you didn't know that is because Hollywood would rather "demoralize" Americans. It's part of their agenda.
I was 7 years old when this came out and I started taking karate lessons soon after. Karate studios started popping up all over the place after this movie came out.
Good catch on Elizabeth Shue. My favorite movie of hers though is “Adventures In Babysitting.” Fun fact: Ralph Macchio was the oldest of the kid lead actors at the age of 22 when it premiered. William Zabka (Johnny) was 18. Elizabeth Shue was 20.
Also because of his leg injury & what johnny did to him which was as bad as what bobby did to Daniel in my opinion Daniel had no other choice but to do the kick as he was finished.
6:55 idk why but maybe its because i grew up in Alaska in a large neighborhood of kids before the internet was a thing and people would meet up and do things at the lake. But the scene of Daniel getting his ass kicked, ditched by his friends and sorta being made fun at school for losing the fight was a major fear of mine and id seen that happen to kids in my neighborhood after they lost a fight.
There is no doubt your daughter could be an 80s high school girl. I applaud at the child raising you are doing. Leuanna..you keep those values you have for the rest of your life. You will not be taken in by scams and when you find that right person, you will know. People accepting people for who they are, not where they come from is HUGE in life. Great family.
idk if we can generalize all old people with this example. Ralph Macchio literally looked 15 years old when he was actually 30. Some people just don't age the same.
as a dad of teenagers myself....I so relate and like this reaction video of you guys.... and it's just priceless to see how your son's reaction from the unfazed cool kid to, by the end, a really excited little boy, who wants to learn martial arts.... meanwhile, your girl asking you whether she's like Ali with and "i" or not....cute. me and my sons have seen all the Kobra Kai seasons....I highly recommend it. Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) is sorely missed throughout all of them.
Interesting point about bullies. That is very true. When I was 8 years old, we moved from PA to NJ. I had a really hard time fitting in and it took me almost an entire school year to make friends. Anyway, I was teased mercilessly by these two bullies. One was an older kid on my bus and the other was in my class. After a while, I got tired of their crap so I fought them within the same week and won both fights. They left me alone after that. In fact I became friends with the older kid. That's how you do it.
Johnny looked like the better fighter bc he trained for years whereas Daniel trained 2 months leading up to the tournament. Cobra Kai is offense, strike, strike not a lot of strategy. Miyagi-do is defense, patience, wait for opening, only exert energy when necessary. Mr. Miyagi taught Daniel quality moves. The actors physical abilities matched perfectly for their characters. Ralph Macchio admits he was never the athletic type but Zabka was. The physical abilities of the actors in the Cobra Kai series is way more impressive.
I personally think Zabka looks as good here as any of the actors on cobra Kai. The guy trained for like a couple months and was able to do all these spinning heel kicks so fluidly, fast, and powerful. And he was like 17 or 18. If he actually had the time that the cobra kai kids have to improve, he’d blow them out the water.
first time i watched a reaction from this channel, its very interesting with Dad and Kids. Ill give it a follow. I like the girl the most so far, here she had the most "grown-up" reaction from all 3 of them :D Thank u all.
Okinawa was part of the Ryukyuan Kingdoms. The Empire of Japan forcibly annexed it. After WW2, Japan was forced to give up the territories it had invaded and annexed, and those whose original governments (typically inherited monarchies) couldn't be restored were governed by the allies. So the U.S. administered Okinawa. But there have always been conflicts over the presence of the military bases, so they eventually held a referendum and the Okinawans chose to be handed over to Japan. However, the disputes continue and there's a certain amount of tension between the Okinawans and the Japanese and U.S. governments.
@40:30...Daniel reads the letter informing Miyagi of his wife's passing in childbirth...Miyagi received this letter as he was fighting the Japanese overseas while enlisted in the U.S. military. The letter says his wife was in a "relocation center"! Don't know how much you know about American history but that was some dark shit the government did to its own citizens who happened to be of Japanese descent at that time. I'm wondering if the "complications" during childbirth had anything to do with the subpar living conditions. I'm betting she didn't have easy access to decent medical care given that she was incarcerated along with thousands of others and forced to live in an internment camp. Messed up.
I’ve been to the Manzanar Relocation Camp several times the past few years. It’s located near the Eastern Sierra in California. Lots of attention to detail; a fascinating piece of WWII history in our country.
I was 7 years old when this movie came out, and because of this movie, my parents allowed me to start taking martial arts, and I've been going ever since.🥋
Karate Kid II was Daniel and Miyagi visit Okinawa. In Part 3 There was another love interest and Bonzai trees . Part 4, another karate kid, stars Miyagi with Hillary Swank. Then came the Jackie Chan reboot, 10 years later.
If I remember right from imdb the cast of the karate kid had 6 weeks to train in karate unlike for cobra kai where they only have hrs or minutes before each episode
We had air conditioning in cars in the 70’s and 80’s … I liked the version with Jaden Smith, but I have a soft spot of the Ralph Macchio version, and enjoy the 80’s scenes.
First time viewer. Impressed with reaction. I find it amazing when youngsters watch this older stuff i grew up with, and they enjoy it. Cool you have a bit of overview of film from notes taken while watching.............................. what was girl (daughter ?) writing in her notebook.
Ralph really got kicked in the face at the fence scene and pats drunk scene was almost cut because they thought it slowed the pacing down but he was nominated for an Oscar but unfortunately didn't win
I love it when people recognize at the end that Johnny is not all that bad a guy. No bad students, only bad teachers, remember. Ya'll should watch the first 2 sequels. THEN watch Cobra Kai. The series is WONDERFUL. But you really need to see those movies too. Trust me.
We ended up watching this movie then the first season of Cobra Kai. Then the second movie and then we started the second season of cobra. Lol we plan to watch the 3rd movie after we finish season 2
Miyagi taught Daniel the foundation of Defense first by having him work in a natural environment so he could build muscle strength. Yes, if used correctly , no can defend hahaha !
However, Elisabeth Shue *did* play Jennifer in _Back to the Future Part II_ and _Part III_ after Claudia Wells (who played her in the first film) pulled out.
53:15 I’m surprised at you, the end credits especially the music played during it can be interesting, someone could like a movie and another song very much , and if the song is their favorite and it’s being played, they would enjoy it and I liked the song they played, in the end credits
She's too young to be tainted by the entitled, gold digger modern women of today. Give her a few years and she'll probably think this movie is stupid and corny guaranteed !!
I hope you know that Cobra Kai is a follow-up to The Karate Kid, The Karate Kid II, and The Karate Kid III, not just the first one? Characters from all three films appear on Cobra Kai with references to their story arcs and character development. There's no word yet whether Oscar-winner Hilary Swank, star of The Next Karate Kid, will be in Cobra Kai's final season, though.
High-up shots were often filmed from a crane. Yes, Elisabeth Shue was Back to the Future II and III, and starred in Adventures in Babysitting. Muscle memory. Also appearing on The Boys is Jack Quaid, who plays Ensign Boimler on Star Trek: Lower Decks. The tree is pronounced BONE-sigh. Since you should see Karate Kid II and III before moving on to Cobra Kai, I can't wait to see your reactions to both films. The Japanese religion of Shinto centers around ancestor worship. Mrs. Miyagi died in an American concentration camp of complications from childbirth because white doctors often refused to go to the camps because the U.S. citizens there (and legal immigrants) were "the enemy" because of their race.
None of us, or anyone I heard ever pronounced it BONE-sigh. It's BON-sigh. So many people took karate after this movie came out. I for one, lol. Great times!
@@BrooklynSusan "Bonsai is a Japanese word made up of two characters or word phrases, "bon" and "sai". Bon is pronounced as the English word "bone," and means pot, container or tray. Sai is pronounced as the English word "sigh" and means tree or plant in Japanese." (Brussels Bonsai)

notes taken while watching.............................. what was girl (daughter ?) writing in her notebook.
I love Karate Kid reactions, this was great! Very much looking forward to the sequels!
When this was being filmed no one wanted pat morita as Miyagi because of his comedy background but he eventually got the part
I'm glad he did
Ralph really got kicked in the face at the fence scene and pats drunk scene was almost cut because they thought it slowed the pacing down but he was nominated for an Oscar but unfortunately didn't win

was waiting for this before starting your CK reactions
Good idea!
The kid Freddy is actually my dad's cousin he's still friends with all these guys and always goes to conventions
then why didn't they put him in cobra Kai?. If they told you that answer that is
@@sainttrunks1982 cause his character literally is jst background there's no story for him in cobra kai
Malachi's (I hope I spelt it correctly) reaction to Daniel's first date with Ali was GOLD.
Thank you 🤣
Miyagi taught Daniel the foundation of Defense first by having him work in a natural environment so he could build muscle strength. Yes, if used correctly , no can defend hahaha !
Need to watch all of the karate kid movies - including the one with Hillary. They all have a part in cobra kai. Hillary will be in ck6
I love this movie and ralph macchio was 22 during this movie and 23 by the following November
try "Best of the Best" (1989)
You have to watch 2 and 3 to watch the rest of cobra kai

In the 1980's I lived in Savannah, GA and EVERYONE had air conditioners.
You gotta watch part 2!!!!
We did! Reaction is coming soon to RUclips. On our Patreon right now though
Elizabeth Shue wasn't in Back to the Future lol. Lea Thompson was.
You are absolutely right 😂
However, Elisabeth Shue *did* play Jennifer in _Back to the Future Part II_ and _Part III_ after Claudia Wells (who played her in the first film) pulled out.
not in the original...but, she was in the sequels...replacing the girl playing Fox's girlfriend.
it's eliSabeth shue, tho. an S not a Z.
43:53 Still chockes me up to Shane 🙏❤️
Yessss
@@3rdstreetreactions yesss every flashback in cobra Kai hits me in the feels when they show Mr Miagi. Great actor may he rest easy🙏🏽
The opening picture is not the OG karate Kid.. it is from karate kid III.. :)
That was the best one to use that I found
the "dead meat" man guy is James Dean's son.. also, you guys should do Adventures in Babysitting sometime
Steve McQueen's son.
Strange camera angle. At first I thought: "what a striking cap"😁🤣
53:15 I’m surprised at you, the end credits especially the music played during it can be interesting, someone could like a movie and another song very much , and if the song is their favorite and it’s being played, they would enjoy it and I liked the song they played, in the end credits
"This one's much better."
The young lady has excellent taste!
She's too young to be tainted by the entitled, gold digger modern women of today.
Give her a few years and she'll probably think this movie is stupid and corny guaranteed !!
Got to agree there.Mind you,I think the love interest in the Jayden Smith remake is cuter. In my opinion.
Yes we’re aware🤙🏽
Thanks for the info drop and that pronunciation it was definitely news to me
Sad about his wife 🙁
None of us, or anyone I heard ever pronounced it BONE-sigh. It's BON-sigh.
So many people took karate after this movie came out. I for one, lol.
Great times!
@@BrooklynSusan "Bonsai is a Japanese word made up of two characters or word phrases, "bon" and "sai". Bon is pronounced as the English word "bone," and means pot, container or tray. Sai is pronounced as the English word "sigh" and means tree or plant in Japanese." (Brussels Bonsai)
@shallowgal462 Whatever.
I'm just saying, anyone I've ever heard pronounced it Bon-sigh.
@@BrooklynSusan You heard Mr. Miyagi pronounce it bone-sigh. Your way sounds too much like banzai to me. Some dictionaries agree with you and some with me. It's not worth an argument or getting rudely whatevered.
The girl has Elizabeth Shue vibes!
You need to watch Karate Kid II soon (my favorite)...
Xolo Maridueña from Cobra Kai is Blue Beetle
Ralph Macchio was actually like 23 years old when they filmed this
