With the soccer stuff, Elisabeth Shue was actually a really good soccer player who, in 1972, became the first girl to play on a boys team (she was 9 at the time) where she grew up in New Jersey. Her brother, Andrew -- who is also an actor -- actually briefly played in the MLS, too, so soccer is huge for that family. There's actually a movie loosely based on Elisabeth Shue's experiences playing soccer (which she produced and co-stars in) called "Gracie."
I watched this movie as a kid at a drive-in movie theater. My brothers, my cousin, and I watched in our pajamas with our Strawberry Shortcake, Dukes of Hazard, and Smurfs sleeping bags in the back of our family station wagon. I remember us excitingly cheering, "Go Daniel!", at the end scene. I'm sure my dad probably got mad and yelled for us to settle down. The 80's man, such good times!

This movie had heart. I miss movies like that. Today's movies are spectacular, filled with action, CGI, loud music, etc, but lack heart and you just don't care about the characters. This movie, you really care about the characters.
You said it! I was born in ‘80 and grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. Going to the movies at that time was a whole experience. You’re so right, they don’t make movies with heart like they used to that could take you on an adventure, make you cry, make you cheer and engage your sense of wonder. It’s hard to feel so much as a twinge let alone feel much of anything for the characters or storylines in these modern day movies. They’re so void of anything that makes paying for a ticket worth it. Once in a blue moon they’ll put one out with a little something that reminds me of the feeling of the old greats. I think the last one I saw that was pretty good like that was Top Gun: Maverick. I wish my kids could’ve been able to experience what going to the movies used to be but alas they were just born too late. I try to show them movies from my day but it’s not the same as seeing them back them on the big screen.
@@ScragsP22 Today, just like in music today, the people making the movies are just pumping out product like an assembly line plant. Everything looks and feels generic, no originality. In the old days, they were intent on making works of art that had more meaning and was made from passion and heart.
If you want a movie with heart made recently, watch Godzilla Minus One whenever you get a chance. You have to read subtitles, but you get so sucked into the story, and care about every character, that you forget that you're reading. Cobra Kai is so damn good. A show that started out as a RUclips original has absolutely no right being as good as it is, but it's genuinely one of my favorites.
Fun facts: Ralph Macchio has that car to this day. The referee for the final match was the instructor for the cast & actually got Steven Segal to back out of a fight
Pat E. Johnson. A true legit martial artist and 9th degree black belt in Tang Soo Do and was president of the National Tang Soo Do congress. He was also in Enter the Dragon as the character who came to see Roper (John Saxon's character) on the golf course to inquire about the money he owed his boss. He was the one doing the talking to Roper and holding the gun.
@cmdrdredd huh didn't know that. But yeah Pat Johnson was one of those back in the day who was like "oh no I'll back this shit up cuz I'm not doing this to make money"
This movie has really stood the test of time, considering it came the same year as The Terminator, Beverly Hills Cop, Purple Rain, Footloose, etc. Even though I think this film is the one is the strongest of the original trilogy, 2 and 3 are also really, with my favorite being Karate Kid 2.
The semifinalist Daryyl Videl, not only invented the "crane kick", but he was the one doing it on the stump dressed as Mr. Miyagi. The tournament referee, Pat Johnson was also the fight choreographer. He trained the actors on how to perform the martial arts moves.
Ralph Macchio fought to keep the Miyagi mourning scene in the movie since the producers didn't want a touch of seriousness about the Japanese internment camps or WW2 in their action movie, but he thought it was essential to show respect to the culture and explore the character to not sweep it under the rug. It also goes to show the similarities between the two war vet teachers, who went through the worst thing imaginable but came out two radically different people. Even their status in life reflects it, the man who won the Medal of Honor being tossed aside by US society likely because of his race while the other got successful selling violence. Cobra Kai is definitely worth a watch if you finish the three originals, unlike what most people were expecting back in 2017 before it came out it wasn't just rehashed garbage, there is a lot to love and it's a good twist on the franchise. The Kung Fu Kid with Jackie Chan actually isn't bad, it's not as good as this obviously but if it wasn't named "Karate Kid" I don't think people would be so hesitant to see it. Besides, both that and the OG are in the same world, and they're actually going to crossover with both Ralph and Jackie reprising their roles.

The character of Mr. Miyagi was based on legendary Sensei Fumio Demura. (出村 文男, Demura Fumio, September 15, 1938 - April 24, 2023) was a Japanese karateka and kobudoka, based in the United States since the mid-1960s.[2][3] A 9th dan in Shitō-ryū karate,[3] he was Pat Morita's martial arts stunt double in the first, third and fourth Karate Kid films, and was one of the inspirations for the character Mr. Miyagi.[4]
I love this movie, and I remember that commercial your mom was talking about those commercials were very well-known,great reaction. Miracles and blessings to you and yours ✌️ ❤🙏.
Daniel (Ralph MACHIO) was 22 when this was made. Also, mr Miyagi, who also played in the TV version of the show MASH, replaced Mako, who stared in the Conan movies as the wizard, because when Miyagi came in, late, the casting people were blown away by his performance. Especially his accent.
It is a Bones-Eye tree. Banzai is something Japanese military would shout in war time. Like, a war cry. Bones-Eye is trimming and shaping little trees.
The late John G. Avidsen (Oscar-winner for Rocky, 1976) directed the first 3 films of the franchise. The Rocky saga's composer, Bill Conti also scored these films too. Karate Kid was actually the name of an DC character from the Teen Titans. So the rights to the name had to be acquired in order to use it as the movie's name. I was 4 years old when this was released. One of the greatest cinematic experiences i ever had. Daniel's story hit home for so many of us kids, learning to be brave and having the right guidance to do so. This movie got me into classical karate to study and later on other martial arts. I knew of Pat Morita as an actor and comedian (Happy Days, Sanford & Son). Morita's voice as Miyagi is the voice of his elders. Such a great performance as Mr. Miyagi and him being nominated for an Oscar was so cool. William Zabka (Johnny) went on to become a Oscar nominee as well for co-writing and producing a short film, Most (2003). All these things, plus 'Wax on, Wax off'. Almost 40 years later. Gotta love it. Also RIP to Martial Arts' legend Pat E. Johnson, playing one of the referees and was one of the film's choreographers.
I'm with mom. This movie is beyond a classic. I never watched the Jackie Chan/Jaden Smith Karate Kid because it didn't belong. I did watch all 3 sequels to The Karate Kid and they were not in the OG's league as far as quality. But Cobra Kai has also become a classic and has added so much relevance to Parts 2 and 3 (and hopefully, also The New Karate Kid in Season 6, with fingers crossed that the Oscar-winning Hilary Swank will show up). Cobra Kai deserves to win Emmys- it's that fantastic. And now that Daniel-san will have a story WITH Jackie Chan's character in a new movie- I suppose I will finally succumb and watch that remake now that it's being brought into the same universe.
Oh by the way: the actor who plays Dutch (the bleach-blonde bully in Cobra Kai) is Chad McQueen, the son of Hollywood legend Steve McQueen. Steve was good friends with Bruce Lee, and Bruce ended up teaching Chad martial arts. And the actor who plays Bobby (the "nice" Cobra Kai dude) was already a black belt when he filmed this, and is a sensei now. So they had some dudes with legit martial arts training on the side of Cobra Kai. The Asian competitor in the tournament is Darryl Vidal, who is another black belt and was the stand in for Pat Morita (Miyagi) in a couple scenes.
I always sensed/felt that there must have been a scene that was shot at school where Daniel yelled at her because of the incident at the Country Club which would explain why she was so angry at Golf n Stuff.
5:04 actually that beach is still beautiful. I just visited there last year and it's nice. I thought it was bigger (the scenes from the movie made it look bigger) but it's actually pretty small.
40 years later, the legacy continues with Cobra Kai, where they maintain the quality, nostalgia, original cast members, and yet make it fresh and new for the new generation. Best franchise over a long period of time.
Never cared too much about the original Karate Kid movie until I fell in love with Kobra Kai and it's incredible how well that show does with the world building of the original movie(s). I'm sure everybody has already said this, but Kobra Kai is a MUST reaction now that you've started these movies. You will love them.
what I love the most about this movie is how well they developed the relationship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. for this reason, The Karate Kid is one of the most iconic love stories of all time. I highly recommend watching the other 3 Karate Kid movies and then moving on to Cobra Kai. as a huge fan of the original Karate Kid movies, Cobra Kai is such an amazing love letter to Karate Kid fans and I know that if you loved this movie, you'll love the series. Mell, a warrior must create BEAUTY as well as DESTRUCTION to be balanced. The problem with seeking revenge is that one is often consumed by his own thirst for revenge. Anything out of balance cannot stand for long. Simply put, revenge has the potential to destroy the person who seeks it.

Actually, maybe the next season of Cobra Kai should bring this guy back and do a revenge arc with him based on the fact that Daniel hit his face with a door one time.
LOVE seeing your moms!!!! Memory making at its finest!
I see where you get your looks from! Momma Mell is awesome and I am so glad you guys got a chance to do a video together like this! You both are awesome!
Thank you 😊❤
@@mszocomedian Anytime Ms. Zo! I mean it though. Mell is a good looking and well mannered man, and his momma is obviously a hard working comedian that supports her son. I wish you guys the best and hope that Mell gets to catch up on movies that you grew up on! Perhaps "The Wizard" with Fred Savage.
YES! I didn't expect you to drop this tonight but I appreciate it! Time to settle in and enjoy you enjoying this flick!
This movie was my parents' first date! Speaking of memories
Avidsen (Oscar-winner for Rocky, 1976)
directed the first 3 films of the franchise.
The Rocky saga's composer, Bill Conti also scored
these films too.
Karate Kid was actually the name of an DC character from the Teen Titans.
So the rights to the name had to be acquired in order to use it as the movie's name.
I was 4 years old when this was released.
One of the greatest cinematic experiences i ever had.
Daniel's story hit home for so many of us kids, learning to be brave and
having the right guidance to do so.
This movie got me into classical karate to study
and later on other martial arts.
I knew of Pat Morita as an actor and comedian
(Happy Days, Sanford & Son).
Morita's voice as Miyagi is the voice of his elders.
Such a great performance as Mr. Miyagi and him being
nominated for an Oscar was so cool.
William Zabka (Johnny) went on to become a Oscar nominee
as well for co-writing and producing a short film, Most (2003).
All these things, plus 'Wax on, Wax off'.
Almost 40 years later.
Gotta love it.
Also RIP to Martial Arts' legend Pat E. Johnson, playing one of the referees
and was one of the film's choreographers.
Mell was funny when he said something, "no wonder Homelander was so taken by her."
Your mom seems so nice 😊. Definitely should have her on for more reactions!
LOL she's also very funny 😂
I totally agree with your mom 100% leave the originals alone. I cannot stand when they try to remake classic movies like this.
Nice
40 years later, the legacy continues with Cobra Kai, where they maintain the quality, nostalgia, original cast members, and yet make it fresh and new for the new generation. Best franchise over a long period of time.
Heck. I’d forgotten about Ernest til you brought him back! Thanks!
Paganomation is making a documentary about him. I'm super excited about that, childhood Hero.
Never cared too much about the original Karate Kid movie until I fell in love with Kobra Kai and it's incredible how well that show does with the world building of the original movie(s). I'm sure everybody has already said this, but Kobra Kai is a MUST reaction now that you've started these movies. You will love them.
Please watch part 2 as soon as possible. It starts where this left off.
what I love the most about this movie is how well they developed the relationship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. for this reason, The Karate Kid is one of the most iconic love stories of all time. I highly recommend watching the other 3 Karate Kid movies and then moving on to Cobra Kai. as a huge fan of the original Karate Kid movies, Cobra Kai is such an amazing love letter to Karate Kid fans and I know that if you loved this movie, you'll love the series. RIP Pat Morita. ❤
We need the whole saga part 2 and 3 then cobra Kai
Where Pat Morita is concerned, we didn't grow up listening to him speak like this. We grew up with him playing a cook in a restaurant where The Fonz would punch a jukebox.
Bro you gotta do these films and then Cobra Kai. That series REALLY brings everything full circle!
Ancient Chinese Secret Commercials!! Wow, I vaguely remember them.
at 6:08 nobody makes me bleed my own blood, nobody!..
have to do Part 2 Mell!!!
I went to a theater called Sunrise Cinema in Queens NY in 1984 and watched this great 80's movie at the age of 8 with the Fam. I loved it then and still enjoyed watching it again along with you and your mom's reaction. Mom is just a little older than me if she was just going into high school at the time, I'm 48 now. 😁
Right just I little bit 😅
Mom’s references are dead on balls accurate!! Love it!
Some Bonsai Trees Are Worth Thousands.
Gotta do karate kid 2 and 3 and cobra kai even the Jackie Chang it is one of the best franchises out there.
Instalike and sub for not only the movie choice but your mom and that 'you like me' meme! Oh that was hysterical.
😅😅
at 15:02 that was so funny I snorted and now my nose hurts..landfill..
@2:32 did it back in 2017 from CT-CA and back non-stop both ways!! Company sucked, but the experience was great!! I'm going to do it again with my son now that he's older.
I love the karate kid. these movies r classics. u will end up watching the others. cobra kai is a great way 2 show the longevity of this series. watch em all
This is one of your best videos. Moms hilarious.
😅😂
Dutch had the smoothest double crescent kick 😮💨👌
Who else grew up only knowing Mr Miyagi from this movie. Come to find out he doesn’t even have an accent.
I literally bought a 1L of chocolate milk at the gas station during my lunch break at work today..
Mellow don't got no milk
Boy I didn’t know that was your mom she funny as hell
Thank you 😅
21:32 FREEZE. That is some GOOD casting. I totally believe those are her parents! That... is RARE.
First time seeing your mother-- she's a gem!
Hilarious! Yes! Ancient Chinese secret, huh? 😆😂 Love this reaction.
My dad would always say that “Ancient Chinese secret” I always cringed lol
😂😂😂
Mell, a warrior must create BEAUTY as well as DESTRUCTION to be balanced. The problem with seeking revenge is that one is often consumed by his own thirst for revenge. Anything out of balance cannot stand for long. Simply put, revenge has the potential to destroy the person who seeks it.
Says mums always right. They ref it in Wayne’s world 2 Mike Myers : Ancient Chinese Secret Calgon
RIGHT 😅
Your mom is hilarious😂💀
😂😅
Great movie! Great progression! Love Mom!
It’s a little late, but I wanna say I always enjoy watching you two reacting together. Chances are I’ve already said it, but I love your guys’ chemistry.
Happy Valentine’s Day Mello 😊 You and your Mom looking good 😌
Thank you 😁
Some people think Daniel is a victim, but he's is a trouble maker, always in someone's business
It's so cool you had to do the review with your Mom, she got to tell us how "The karate kid" was very influential to the 80s teens and young adults. All thanks to Ralph Macchio (Daniel), Mr Miyagi's wisdom, the wax on/wax off technique and the kicka$$ soundrack ("Venus" by Bananarama was a huge hit)
