    So, it's 2.4 miles from the Ace round the Hanger Lane roundabout and back, and I reckon I could just about do that in song on my little 125cc on a quiet Sunday evening on the North Circular, if there is such a thing.
    Of course that song had better be Bohemian Rhapsody.

      I think I'd drop a bob on "Free Bird" 'cos it's over 14 minutes, which should give enough time for an oil change too.

    Pleasing chug to your bike. Been to the Ace many times, but it's not really my type of place but doubtless better than the Shoreditch place. Is the bike the 500cc one, Dick? I didn't know the Ace had been bombed. I used to teach near the Ace. Neasden, to be precise, then Harlesden. Good days. Used to chug along the 406 on my XT500.

    100mph is a costly excercise to be at for sure and so easy on modern machinery . I tell you what, once you have experienced getting caught doing it with all the heart ache that comes with it , one starts hankering for a royal enfield and a different kind of biking.

    I think nostalgia leads us to look for a romance that never existed for the youth of the day. I've never visited the Ace Cafe and I was a bit too young for "The Rocker" generation but I knew a few guys who were around at that time and I don't think they saw it as romantic it was just teenagers trying to find places to go to alleviate the boredom and as they were too young to go to pubs and many places didn't allow motorcycles they ended up at the "greasy spoon" transport cafes with terrible food and luke warm milky tea. These were places where the forecourt was soaked in diesel and oil and the food was much the same but it was dry and warm inside. I've been to quite a lot of bike night meets in the midlands area and they are a mixed bag, there's usually someone who will come and talk to you if you have an interesting or unusual bike but many do have that feeling that you are almost intruding on some groups private function but there are others that are much more welcoming but I still prefer to go along with others who I'm already friends with as it's guaranteed to be more fun from the get go.

    As Londoner who's been lucky enough travel a fair bit, there are few places I find more grim than the A-roads of our Capital. Grey and miserable :)

    Great video. I used to go to the Ace for lunch once a week when I worked around the North Circular doing reinstatement work. It was popular with all sorts but it didn't really blow up as a 'brand' until after TV show 5th Gear started using it for filming. It's been years, perhaps over a decade since I've been down that way now.
    There's a pub near where I live now called the White Hart which is home to the original 'Nottingham Aces', proper ton-up boys from the midlands. They do a few events each year that are worth checking out, nothing in the UK really compares to the big US rallies and bike runs though.

But it's just a rumor yet. I hope they open new stores here and also bring the twins! The Hymalaian was just launched here this week.

    Appreciate the honest review. I think you have probably found Brits to be a lot less inclusive and friendly than your average American. Its not so easy to break into social circles in the UK, especially the South.

    • @DickWhistles
      @DickWhistles  5 лет назад +1

      Jason Manning actually, I’ve found Brits in general are infinitely friendlier than Americans - just not the “cool” Brits...

    Great bike, cafe and memories but you sound like a typical North America who still believes he is still in the good old USA and doesn't understand why everything isn't the same or as good as at home.

      timothy phillips Ha! There is no, Good Ol’ USA! There is a reason I live in the UK. Missed the mark with your assumptions about Americans. The fact that you think there are “typical” Americans is your first mistake.

    I was kinda of sad to see what I perceived as some of the romance as being all but gone. Maybe it was never what it was cracked up to be but I hope it was a place of excitement. I think we have all had those disappointing experiences when we relive a past event and the present never quite matches up to the past. I really try hard to make today's events the ones I can look fondly back on.

    Thought you was going to need the kick start, has it got one?
    Onion rings and milk shake, sounds very American, yuk!
    The Ace is OK on a sunny Sunday as is Box Hill near Dorking and High Beech, Epping Forest. Worth a try on your tours in the London area. Love the sound of the bike. Cheers.

    I never “did” the Ace Cafe back in the day, but biking (in the 60’s) was for me about riding with my mates, and going to events. Brands Hatch, the Ramsgate Sprints, the Brighton Sprint, were great in the day, and were places to share with mates, and perhaps with others. Also trips to East Farleigh Cafe (owned by parents of Paul Smart) and riding out from there in a group - with Paul, and his mate Jonny Button(?).
    Nowadays, back on a (small) bike and living in the North West of England, the odd trip out to the Ponderosa Cafe seems a little tame in comparison, though some are still willing to chat and share. Perhaps we’ve all become too shy to admit we can get excited about two-wheeling. Maybe we need to loosen up a bit! British reserve, don’t you know? Les

    The guys who work there are friendly. And you're a brave man voicing your opinion on angels. I've personally always found them to be okay. Indeed I was the only security guard they would speak to when I worked part time at Donongton in the early '80s.
    One security guard tried acting all officious with a bunch of them, so the leader filled his own mouth with lighter fuel, then ignited it as he squirted the officious security guard's face!! The rules with angels are very very simple. Treat them as you wish to be treated. There's no fake 'code' crap about them. In my experience, they pay their way, and if they don't, make like Kermit sipping his tea ;))

    • @DickWhistles
      @DickWhistles  6 лет назад +1

      Only saying I am more comfortable around the Rockers I've met than the Angles I've known. No opinions here... My uncle, though not an Angel himself, had a lot of Vietnam buddies who were and they loved my Grandmother. Used to have them around her house all the time. Guys were good to her, and by default me, but had always had the feeling, that it was better to be on their good side. Thanks for the comment.

      I was referring to the opening of the Cafe in '38 and then being bombed sometime thereafter. Thanks for the comment.

    • @moderatefkr6666
      @moderatefkr6666 6 лет назад

      Later you actually said it was bombed in 1938. It's cool. I was just joking. Brit sense of humour. We never expect Americans to know when either world wars started. You were being directed by the forces of Zion on both occasions anyway :)) Thats only half a joke. We all were apparently. Long story, lots of research - including family members involved. Anyway, I'll buy you a beer if you can name the originator of my "naughty Mrs Hitler" phrase.

    • @DickWhistles
      @DickWhistles  6 лет назад

      Ah, my mistake, lots to keep straight when running commentary while operating a motorcycle... Forgive me. The "Naughty Mrs. Hitler" phrase, sounds like something from a Mel Brooks skit. I do remember it being in a book about a school teacher making the rounds a couple of years ago, but I think its inclusion in the book was lifted from its true origination.

    • @moderatefkr6666
      @moderatefkr6666 6 лет назад +1

      It's not an issue Dick Whistles. I was just amused by the alternative history of ww2 aspect :)) Easily done. You are of course forgiven.
      Not Mel Brooks, and the 'lady' in question most likely wouldn't have lasted give minutes as a school teacher. She was real and infamous in her day. One of two famous brothers (now shuffled off this mortal coil) did write about her in his best selling book.
      You're down to half a pint, but the offer still stands next time I'm in Town.
