Yes! Yes! Yes! That's so great for all the Circuit and Mono Station users that are already familiar with the super intuitive sequencer concept of Novation! The GAS is strong in me this year!
One idea for what to do with this device: Configure the four tracks as bass, pad, arp, and lead. Configure 7 of the 8 patterns (and matching scenes) for the 7 main chords in a scale. Then play it like a NDLR, changing realtime between the 7 patterns, ideally while playing a melody on the lead track or on another device. This uses most of its sequencing capacity (4 tracks and 8 short patterns) and turns it into an easy accompaniment sequencer.
I'm sure this will be a video that goes well with the Novation in-depth video on the Sequencer. My Launchpad Pro has been gathering dust, but it's now one of the key pieces of gear in my production workflow. The more I explore it, the more I love it. The Sequencer's features sometimes were hard to wrap my head around, so this demo is something I'll be returning to so that I can get the hagn of them. Thanks for doing it!
WOW WOW WOW! I love my Circuit and this feels like such an incredible natural extension into my Ableton usage. This almost feels like Push playability but fewer layers and more straightforwardness. Cutting the fat pretty much. I can imagine they much slap this guy in a Circuit Pro. Thank you for the greatly explained and well-presented video, Bo!
With the latest firmware, the Circuit's sequencer is lightyears beyond what Novation has offered since. It's a real bummer. Using the MonoStation or the newer SL Mk3 controllers feel like a huge step backward. We can't queue up patterns, only run one from the next in a chain. There are no micro-timings. The ability to carry over a tone from one pattern to the next is limited. If the Launchpad Pro Mk3 works like the MonoStation or SL Mk3 sequencer, then I'm not interested. The Circuit would still be far more advanced.
I just ordered one yesterday to use with Logic X, but holy cow your demo of what it can do is ace. Looks way more featured than I bargained for. Could be fun; thanks!
i'm looking for a standalone sequencer. in the video, BoBeats says if I want a standalone sequencer I shouldn't buy the Pro. What should I get instead?
Great demo Bo. This seems like a very clever move on Novations part to pull in those of us familiar with their workflow but less sure about the Launchpad as an Ableton controller.
Thanks Bo! Very helpful tutorial! I just want to contradict saying it can not be recommended as a sequencer alone - I have had lot of fun with it this Jamuary, and I dont have Ableton, I just controlled hardware synths with it. There might be better sequencers, but they also nearly all cost (much) more, so if you are ok with 4 tracks(e.g. 2 synthss and one drum), it's just fine for the price. Besides ableton it can also be used nicely with bitwig, as there is the drivenbymoss midi controller extension that makes it functioning very similar as in ableton (which is free and also supports many more controllers, including Maschine and Push).
Wonder if there’s ANY chance to increase sequencer to eight tracks with a firmware update. Having little boxes like the Model:Cycles with advanced six track sequencer makes this seem a little basic by comparison. Agree re Circuit Mk2 with a small screen!
Those features or so cool, can a push 2 do the same tho? I'm in a split trying to decide which one to go for. I already have a APC 40 mk1. Please help! Thanks for this detailed video, I'll loved the whole look of the video too. God bless you and your family abundantly always 🙂🙏🏼❤️
push 2 has a ton more features and functions. I’d say that Launchpads are better for live performances and quick hands on control, whereas push 2 is much deeper and more flexible.
Thanks for that insight man, I get what you mean. I'll work on increasing my budget and also hope they come up with a push 3 with the standalone features. God bless you 🙂🙏🏼❤️
Nice video! It's a little pity that LPP MK3 cannot lit the buttons more as it does not have an optimal visibility for the video in this amount of light. Everything is nicely explained, thanks for that. Besides, what I was primarily looking everywhere over the internet and couldn't find the answer anywhere (even in this video) was how to record longer sequence then the 32 steps in the standalone mode at once. Actually, there are two options, that can be combined together as I found: 1) slow down the sequence pattern (to half speed or quarter speed - every time omit one button to the left controlling the pattern speed, it gets some triplet speed otherwise). You can now record two or four times long sequence but you lose note timing precision of course. 2) With empty sequencer, use "scenes" in a way, that you make a linear chain of individual patterns for the wanted track (up to all 8 per track). This works also for patterns being empty as you can now play them and watch them to change in the time! At this time you can save the project and have it as a starting point for this purpose. Now if you hit record button, it will keep the pattern flow defined within those "scenes" and you can fill them one by one with your performance :-). Hope this helps someone! I am considering making a special video showing off this feature, so let me know if it might be helpful having done this.
Hi Bo. Thank you for the review. Do you think the 150 bucks difference in price to the X is worth it? I bought the X two days ago and I'm thinking of returning it and buying the Pro. I'll be using it mostly for controlling Ableton and the reason I'm considering the change is mainly because of the undo, quantise, clear and duplicate functions. I'd love to know your opinion. Keep up the great content. Subscribed.
I was about to go with launchpad x but now i'm not so sure. Does this have everything that lauchpad x has? Is the scaler function the same? Any idea about price point? Great video!
Looks like this means the new full-size Launchkeys are right around the corner, if not already announced. And just bought a new Launchkey 49mk2 last year, too; should've been patient.
Circuit workflow nice ahhhhh idk if it's time to retire my push mk1 midi outs are very appealing but the lack of browsing functions is getting me I love how hands free from the keyboard push is I am a little tired of push man I really dont know help.cheers👌
This is soooooo interesting!! they finally made a standalone sequencer and super useful!! definitely on my list. And of course awesome video! as usual!!! very detailed and dynamic. Thanks!
What would be the best standalone sequencer for someone who doesn’t use ableton and has a lot of hardware synths? (Aside from the beat step pro which I didn’t like at all)
Just realised now that I want this. 4 times I've owned a Push. Sold it everytime because I only used it for drum pads and sequencing. But for exactly those 2 things I really liked it. And the LPP3 has those 2 things at a more affordable price. So if I'm not really using the other features of Push 2, it makes more sense to get the Novation. I can use it without a computer. So I can also use it for playing in drums on Octatrack. AND it has 4 tracks of POLYPHONIC tracks. Only 32 steps. But with the pattern chain feature I actually prefer that over a 64 step sequencer on the LPP3 specifically, since that's how it's physically laid out. Srsly this controller/sequencer seems like a total gem for the money. One thing though, does the pads feel about as great as on a Push? Because I didn't like the small ones on the Launchkey mk2 series. They needed a lot of force. Edit: just figured out that octatrack doesn't recieve velocity information on audio tracks. Weird. But well, I'll just use chromatic on that unit then.
Cool stuff! What happens if you print to clip a pattern with probability? Will it choose one version or will it print it without the probability settings?
man, and i just bought the X last week. Oh well, gotta learn to wait for NAMM some time. At least I didn't get the old Pro. Novation components is cool!
This is great, so i can launch sequence from Ableton and at the same time control hardware? This could be a game changer as a controller. I love Novation more and more. Great review as always Bo!
@BoBeats In sequencer mode, can I hold a note over multiple steps? Like ties? Also would I be able to use headphones or a speaker hooked into my computer to hear it? Or could I hook it up to a synthesizer to hear it? What are you using to be able to hear it? Thanks!
jC3drums lack of cv out put is a downer, however midi through on a KeyStep will give cv clock.... an arp would be ace, perhaps in a firmware update. I wonder if Novation are holding some features back for future updates.
Hey Bo! thnks for another great tutorial... I just bought this machine.. Microsteps is not working, it seems disabled. Do you know why? I´m using it on peak, is it that microsteps are only available in drum mode? thnks in advance!!
If you do not recommend to purchase this as only a standalone sequencer then what do you suggest? I like Novations ease of use, especially the Circuit, but this sequencer has note removal, polyphonic notes, and aftertouch, multi midi out, and drum channel.
Well, its mainly because its only 4 tracks that I don’t think its worth the money ONLY for external sequencing. But if you like the feature set it works well standalone.
@@satyanpatel6403 Another thing to consider is that there are also 8 totally customisable pages of MIDI mappable controls. This is a whole load of additional power and can completely open up other external instruments from one centralised place. I have mine set with 3 pages of controllers for my Octatrack, 2 pages for my Beatsqueezer and another page for my TR-08. The last two give performance controls over the drums that are only menu based allowing things I cannot directly on the TR-08 or Beatsqueezer alone. This amount of control alongside the polyphonic sequencers is a super solid central production hub and is firmly in my set-up now. Of course its also a full blown Launchpad Pro for Ableton duties too.
Indeed. I know I'm very late but Bo comment about this not being good as a standalone sequencer was strange. I don't think there are so many alternatives at this price. Beatstep Pro is cheaper, but it doesn't have the polyphonic capability. For a bit more money, you have the Toraiz Squid (totally different workflow) and the Keystep Pro (much bigger as it has an integrated keyboard).
Hey Bo, would this thing accept sounds from my own library? Not so much as programmed rhythms, but various ambient sounds in .wav or other audio format as in, nature sounds and solos of instruments I used on the record, but can't get the live instruments for the show.
I'm not sure if it already has this (or if would be possible with firmware change), but it would be great to be able to sequence chords played via the chord page 🙂
Yeah so sad that you can't record the chords from chord mode into the internal sequencer. If they implement that in a new firmware I will buy a second one
Hello bo beats! thank you for this tutorial. did you expierience any sync tempo issues when sequensing external gear and running ableton sequencer at the same time?
My question is can I use multiple vst synths sequenced to the device? I'm guessing no. I assume you wouldn't be able to play the sequences all at once, maybe just the armed track, but you could record one sequence (track) then arm the next sound and sequence it over the previous one. Am I right in my thinking here?
Bo, this is the exact type of "music" I would like to produce and in time incorporate other types. What is the best location to learn MIDI information, sequencing and programming. Right now I have a Circuit, a Minilougue XS module and the Korg Elecscribe Sampler 2.
Will Live Lite be sufficient enough for a controller like this? Or do I need to buy the full version also. Because then it will become a lot more expensive. And don’t you miss cv?
Trying to find out if I can use my MC 101 for the drum track with the Launchpad...seems it would be perfect to midi out to the 101 and pick whatever drum set on the 101 to use with the LP Pro.
The Print to clip feature is nice. My question is can it go the other way round, i.e. take ideas (midi tracks) from Ableton and put it in the Launchpad and go play live without the computer?
@@emberkeeper1737 Same here - I used to have a push 1 - the responsiveness was Ok but not great. I want to use this as an instrument - I hear the push 2's pad dynamics is really good and I'm more interested in playability over Ableton integration so in that regard the price of the launchpad pro would make it much more attractive. Speaking of which if they made an 8 track sequencer version of this I think a lot of people would be queuing up for this.
Blos - Music If you’ve only just bought it, you’ll have zero problems whatsoever in returning it. Especially if you don’t mention how you’ll be wanting any kind of refund at all. Praise the shop, the helpful staff etc. Explain you buy all your kit from said store. You’ve probably realised this ages ago that music shops are one of the only types of store where you find total bell-ends working at any level - from working the floor, middle management, the sales guys nor the boss - for some reason, it’s impossibly difficult to find dickheads working there. Sounds daft, but it’s usually true lol. They’ll be more than happy that you will want to return there to shop for the new Launchpad when it gets released when you say that you would love it to to have the cost refunded by way of store credit or back into your account if you have one. You’ll be completely fine if you do like this. And as long as you’re not the one who’s the idiot by throwing away the receipt as soon as you took it out of the box !!
Great vid, Bo. Anyone know if there is any way to use the Notes (scales) mode with the Sequencer, or does it use its own Notes/Scale mode? Can't seem to find the answer. Thx!
Why can I only control sends for Send A in Ableton Live? When I make new sends on the computer the right column colours up accordingly but can’t seem to adjust Send B onwards.
i'd say its pretty pointless if you dont use ableton live. but the sequencer works standalone without a daw, but you are paying "alot" for that feature alone with only 4 tracks
Bo, bundle up your daughter, get on a plane to Anaheim, give her a mic and a few choice scripted lines and start filming: it’s all on the Mfgrs to get their Swedish in line.....do subtitles in post. You’re welcome. 🍺🍿👨👧
Thanks for this very nice video! What about Shuffle and Triplets? Can you shorten the 32 Steps for example to 24 Steps? 24 would be good, to do triplet beats...
hey! its a shift command and you can use arrow up/down to set the tempo and swing. as far as I know only whole numbers, 120, 121 and so on. Not 121,5 or 121,3...
I wonmder if you can answer a question. I have a Korg Wavestate whose midi out is connected to a Roland Systemn 8 which in turn has its midi out connected to a Novation Mininova. All are using Midi channel 1. If I play notes on the Korg they are replicated on the other two synths. However, if I play the Korg through the Launchpad Pro Mk 3. only the Korg is triggered. Why aren't the other two synths the way they are when I play the Korg directly?
I would love the components software to have a better way to save / backup your projects like a naming system or something. i love my circuit as a sequencer and this looks like a great replacement
My favorite use for the LPPro is as an isometric (grid) MIDI keyboard - the “scale mode”, I think it’s called. Does this new version still have that? Could I use that view to play notes while recording a sequence?
I hear this referred to as an "external hardware sequencer", but I have yet to see anyone demonstrating the transmission of MIDI notes out of synthesizer (e.g. that Korg Minilogue in this video) into the LaunchPad Pro and then playing them back out of the LPP sequencer into the synthesizer. The LPP manual says just hit the Capture Midi button, but that does not seem to work. Why are there no demonstrations of this external sequencer's MOST ESSENTIAL function???
I have one of these, and am confused on the microsteps. If you have a particular sound on multiple steps in a pattern, and you want to do microsteps on a few but not all of them, is that not possible? it's all or none? I can't figure out how to make individual sounds on individual steps microstepped.
@BoBeats Would I be correct in saying that it may not need a computer, but at least needs a synthesizer or some kind of musical instrument to be heard?
@@BoBeatsOkay, that makes sense, since I don’t see any way to choose what sounds come from it. I got one but returned it because I don’t have a synthesizer with a midi in, and I don’t like that it needs a computer if you don’t have an instrument with a midi in. Thanks for the quick reply by the way!!
Hello, could you tell me where you got the RHODES sound please? I wrote to novationmusic several times but we don't understand each other! The patches only accept the .sysex format and novation tells me that each machine has its own .sysex. I downloaded sounds on a site in .sysex but the circuit does not accept them. Can you tell me how to get HAMMOND / RHODES / CLAVINET / BASS ACOUSTIC sounds compatible with the circuit? Thank you for your attention.
I've seen that the novation circuit can essentially be used as a midi looper if you have midi going both ways between it and external gear. However, it looks like sending receiving cc info and being able to record it for parameter locking/ automation record is very tricky or not doable depending on the gear. I'm guessing the LP can record note info from an external synth in this configuration and act as a midi looper, and I know you can set up custom page with cc control for various parameters on external gear or ableton, but can it record/ loop cc info for automation?
When I am in the Sequencer Steps mode: Is there any way I can change the "instruments/channels" without having to go over the Sessions/Record Arm Tab? I would love to "record/add" different Instruments to the 32 Sequencer Grid with simply just selecting the next instrument/channel via the small colored buttons from (the second row) at the bottom. Big help. Thanks!
@Wyatt Clark No u can't.. Unfortunately Akai hasn't implemented multitimbral MIDI yet for Live. So you have to be focused on a track which receives omni (all input on all channel) input, you cannot filter it down to a specific MIDI channel.

I'm considering getting one just for that standalone sequencer.
Cool! Does it work with the old Launchpad Pro mkII?
cheers man i get it yesterday and thanx to u, i understand everything !! u rocks
Hello bo beats!
thank you for this tutorial.
did you expierience any sync tempo issues when sequensing external gear and running ableton sequencer at the same time?
no! but your milage might vary as different midi gear can behave differently
Great video. I would like to know more about the sounds you used in it.
How do you instruct wether the launchpad sequencers controls ableton daw via usb or external gear via midi outs?
BoBeats I bought one. How steep was the learning curve. How long did it take you to grasp its functions.
It was easy enough but I did watch a bunch of tutorials
BoBeats Did you try the custom layouts. It’s mind blowing.
Would love to see a video where you control/sequence eurorack… how would one do this?
Bo! Thank you for that overview. Its really helpful! Could you tell me, what is the responsiveness of the pads like?
Its pretty good. Im not a good finger drummer so definitely not an expert on that
How does this compare to the push 2?
Trying to decide which one to get.
Thank you!
Can the setting for the pads responsiveness be changed
Me: Buys a Launchpad Pro
The next day: New Launchpad Mk3!
:(
F to pay respects
F my poor brother
WOW I was!!!
Same boat, I copped the Launchpad X a couple of months ago, just browsing and came across the MK3. Ridiculous!!!
This really cool. For sure getting one.
Great vid, Bo. Anyone know if there is any way to use the Notes (scales) mode with the Sequencer, or does it use its own Notes/Scale mode? Can't seem to find the answer. Thx!
I’m waiting for Ableton Live Push news. Ableton Push 3 in NAMM 2020????
Blue Sunset I wish
@@ericsummers2112 I'm hoping so I can at least sort-of afford Push 2. Hopefully it drops close to Push 1's current price.
Twin Peaks vibes with these chord sequence!
Launchpad Pro Mk3 + SL3 Mk III sounds like a fantastic way to control all of my hardware synths. Now I just need space.
Would like to see a comparison with the 1010 sequencer?
When you print to clip, does that capture the sound at the same time or just the notes? Sorry I’m a newbie.
IM SOOOOO mad I bought the mk3 when it came out because I didnt think they would do the pro......... kickin myself
♥️
how does it work with the step sequencer on the ableton drum rack? is it similar to push 2?
Why can I only control sends for Send A in Ableton Live? When I make new sends on the computer the right column colours up accordingly but can’t seem to adjust Send B onwards.
This or Push 2 for recording (transport, clips, etc)?
Damn it! During their leap year sale I bought the wrong one!
(Launch pad X)
Great video Bo! Thanks for the details. I that it’s standalone as well. One question, are you able to use it with other DAWs with the same ease?
i'd say its pretty pointless if you dont use ableton live. but the sequencer works standalone without a daw, but you are paying "alot" for that feature alone with only 4 tracks
works great with bitwig when using driven by moss extension script
That was really, really helpful, thank you good Sir.
With NAMM2020 going on what are you most hyped about?! And Should I do a News Round-up type video later this week?
Sequential Pro 3 :)
Korg ARP 2600 mini version would be sweet - but there's all kinds of great looking stuff on the horizon.
Bo, bundle up your daughter, get on a plane to Anaheim, give her a mic and a few choice scripted lines and start filming: it’s all on the Mfgrs to get their Swedish in line.....do subtitles in post. You’re welcome. 🍺🍿👨👧
Subsequent 25
Deluge 5.9
Thanks for this very nice video! What about Shuffle and Triplets? Can you shorten the 32 Steps for example to 24 Steps? 24 would be good, to do triplet beats...
Can you use this controller with other software instead of Ableton, Logic, Cubase and Studio One? In other words the no name brand software program.
How do you set up the tempo in standalone mode? Is it tap tempo, adjustable with pads or both?
hey! its a shift command and you can use arrow up/down to set the tempo and swing. as far as I know only whole numbers, 120, 121 and so on. Not 121,5 or 121,3...
@@BoBeats that's really cool, does it show the value on the pads while you are adjusting it or do you have to do it by ear?
@Joshua Gallagher thanks Joshua!
This is really nifty, if I had the desk space for it I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
You could always buy stands to move some gear off the desk. If you don't mind spending the money and if you have the room space, that is.
Do I get points for spotting the twin peaks chords 🙂
Guy Turner yes.
Nope
I was about to say that... 😂
Did Arturia switch to the 3.5mm Midi A standard? (Their old sequencers were the now-deprecated Midi B).
Each pad can hold a different "session" or "project"?
amazing
I would love the components software to have a better way to save / backup your projects like a naming system or something. i love my circuit as a sequencer and this looks like a great replacement
My favorite use for the LPPro is as an isometric (grid) MIDI keyboard - the “scale mode”, I think it’s called. Does this new version still have that? Could I use that view to play notes while recording a sequence?
This is pretty cool to be fair, I wonder what it would be like with a Digitone? :)
Instant buy for me!
@BoBeats Would I be correct in saying that it may not need a computer, but at least needs a synthesizer or some kind of musical instrument to be heard?
Yes. Its a control and/or sequencer
@@BoBeatsOkay, that makes sense, since I don’t see any way to choose what sounds come from it. I got one but returned it because I don’t have a synthesizer with a midi in, and I don’t like that it needs a computer if you don’t have an instrument with a midi in. Thanks for the quick reply by the way!!
hello can i ask if the launchpad can directly connect to a sustain pedal(through Midi in port) and work ?
Nice Bo! Wonder if we would see any of these probabilities in a circuit fw update?
Hello,
could you tell me where you got the RHODES sound please? I wrote to novationmusic several times but we don't understand each other! The patches only accept the .sysex format and novation tells me that each machine has its own .sysex. I downloaded sounds on a site in .sysex but the circuit does not accept them. Can you tell me how to get HAMMOND / RHODES / CLAVINET / BASS ACOUSTIC sounds compatible with the circuit? Thank you for your attention.
BoBeats how do you store and retrieve sequences on it. I need to know. How many can it store.
For this to be a successful stand alone sequencer it needs a BPM indicator for clock out. Does it have a similar RGB one like the Circuit?
Late answer, but still. According to the manual (I don't have one), Shift + Device shows BPM (using the lighted buttons) and allows adjusting them.
Big help. Thanks!
Does it record poly aftertouch info in the sequences?
How well does this work with an MPC Live? Can you control and trigger the sequences for multiple instruments at the same time?
@Wyatt Clark No u can't.. Unfortunately Akai hasn't implemented multitimbral MIDI yet for Live. So you have to be focused on a track which receives omni (all input on all channel) input, you cannot filter it down to a specific MIDI channel.
