0:33 and 3:57 I like how Yoren owed Ned nothing, but he protected Arya because of his friendship with Benjen. God the night's watch has more honour than the Lannisters. With the exception of Ser Alliser and Karl
It wasn't simply Benjen, though a part. The Night's watch had great respect for the Starks as the Starks supported their role at the wall. They worked together for generations to protect the North. Yoren in the book said he did it both to honor that respect for her family, and simply to protect an innocent child.
Ser Alliser Thorne wasn't dishonourable. He was a professional soldier that spent his whole adult life fighting for the Watch. He was also a tough man and a powerful fighter. Jon Snow never properly communicated his reasons for protecting the people that the Watch had fought for thousands of years. He never once took the people he relied on into his confidence. Consequently, Ser Alliser Thorne believed him to have been corrupted by his time with the Free Folk, and had turned away from Watch. He thought that Jon Snow had betrayed the Night's Watch, and that the only thing he could do to protect the Watch was to mutiny. Jon was too young and immature to understand that leadership depends on trust. He'd never held a serious command position before. The cost of this was a mutiny that could have been avoided
@@Peoples_Republic_of_Devonshire Ser Alliser only sanctioned Jon's mission to crasters keep to potentially have Jon killed and reduce the number of men who supported him. And he used Benjen Stark as a way to bait Jon and kill him. He basically treated Jon like garbage from the first moment because Ned sent him to the wall after Robert's rebellion
I found Sansa's expression at 2:19 so touching.. She was so surprised by the reaction of the crowd. Honestly, as emotional as well-directed and well-acted the red wedding is, I honestly prefer this scene over it because of what it represents, it truly cemented Game of Thrones as a one of a kind show where even the main character can die, thus warning the viewer that anyone can be killed unlike 99% of tv shows where main characters survive everything. Plus this scene set up so many character and story arcs throughout the series: Robb is declared King of the North, Sansa is stuck as a hostage and grows from her naivety, Arya struggles with revenge and losing her family, Tyrion is sent by Tywin to be Hand of the King. It’s genuinely one of the greatest scenes in media imo.

Miguel Cabrera Oh I did watch every single episode, and currently re-watch this TV-show for the second time. I agree, there are plenty of shocking moments.

@@SamerAN1985 I can only ask that question if the Stark's openly coveted these positions, they didn't. If anyone should be questioned about their decisions being worth it would be Cersei and Daenerys.
I just notice that both Cersei and Varys were shocked about Joffrey's sentence on Ned Stark. Cersei was trying to persuade Joffrey to spare him because she KNEW that all hell would break loose if he was executed, and there'll be an all out war between the Lannisters, the capital, and the Northerners cuz they didn't keep their word, sealing The War of the Five Kings. Lord Varys ran towards Joffrey because he truly wanted Ned Stark to serve the realm, and tried desperately for Joffrey to spare him, but they both failed. And when Ice was unsheathed, you can see Varys and Cersei looking away.
Well, Varys always said that he serves the realm, and the realm needs peace. He knew that if Ned was executed, the realm wouldn't see peace for a long, long time. Cersei knew that too. She never really wanted Ned to die- she just wanted him out of the way so Joffrey could rule, or rather that SHE could rule.
Everyone respected Ned, even cold hearted Cersei who doesn't give a damn about anyone except herself and her kids. The only one who didn't was Joffrey, who was a sadistic teenager with far too much power.
It’s actually literally heartbreaking to see what they’re done with the show. This scene is world class television that I don’t even want to rewatch for what it becomes.
I love how in the show, they gave Eddard one last heroic act in telling Yoren “Baelor” as in the name of the statue Arya is standing on so he could go and save her before the Lannister’s could. That wasn’t in the books, where Yoren took his own initiative to rescue Arya. I love it.
I always really love that moment, since George RR Martin specifically pointed that difference out in an interview as a change which was better in the show than the books. @Nathan Phillips In season one Varys character followed the books. That's why he conspired with Illyrio. Varys in the books and first seasons didn't care about the good of the realm but he had his own motiations. That's why he tried to kill Daenerys and didn't give a shit to protect her and Viserys. I like how Yoren owed Ned nothing, but he protected Arya because of his friendship with Benjen.
Yoren died to protect a girl he didn't know, for a man he had no relations with!
Respect!

It’s a small detail, but really significant when you consider these are Ned’s final moments and he has left his daughters in very dangerous situations.
@@lmanproductions8680 I just read this moment in the book and had to stop and rewatch the scene while the imagery was fresh in my mind and didn't know of the difference. I agree this is better than how it was written. Both in the book and the show it is so gut wrenching.
Fun fact: Sean Bean didn't understand his line and actually thought Yoren's name was Baelor. Sean Bean though Ned was talking to a guy named Baelor (who is actually named yoren,) who he wanted to look after his daughter
hh
This is a GRRM opinion presented as your own... nice try.
Saddest moment in GoT history, why did he have to die so early in the saga, Ned Stark was THE MAN. My favourite character by a mile..
You have not held the door...
Saddest moment until surpassed by the red wedding.
yeah the red wedding was the most horrible one.......
I think the red wedding and this death was sad, but I personally thought the deaths of Robert's bastards was the saddest; that's just me though!
glad they didn't decide ressurrected catelyn just like what happen in the book...
I love how Varys runs to try and stop Joffrey.
Besides Ned he was the most honorable man on that stage.
After all these years I still hope him to live in this scene
now all these people are dead..
Thanks, Drogon!!! The north remembers
After watching this scene again, yeah im glad dany destroy kings landing
Sibely Cambraia after rewatching this episode I’m glad that she killed everyone they had there
For shits sake bud
Except Sansa
I love how at 3:45 Varys actually tries to save Ned's life. Then at 4:01 when his fate is sealed you can see Littlefinger smiling maliciously and Varys glaring at him like "You won this round..."
I wouldn’t be surprised if Littlefinger helped convince Joffrey to go through with it, being Littlefinger.
what a detail!!
@@acrazysheepdog1555 Don't think so Joffrey its just Joffrey being a spoiled little bitch. He thinks that being a king of iron throne means that he can do as he pleased. He wasn't even aware what has he done but not all the blame should go on him Cersei being a evil witch and letting Joffrey lightly on the throne was a mindless decision. This scene was so sad, when Ned "confessed" he's "treason" a part big part of him died and thats always being true to he's word, he's honor, just being a person of morals, justice and truth and that why he died... At the very least he could have said the truth and remained what he has been he's whole life
@@peolfpetler8500 As said in the book if they let Ned join the watch there could have been some sort of peace for a while. Only if cersey knew how bad Jaime and Tywin were losing to Robb and that Renly and Stannis are coming for them
@@peolfpetler8500 In the book Tyrion's first act as Hand is to investigate how the Small Council could fail to stop Joffrey from fucking up like that, and he enters the investigation suspecting that someone manipulated him into doing it. He finds that Janos Slynt was quick to respond to Joffrey's order to the point that he had to have known about it beforehand, and it's why he exiles Janos. Varys tells him that in doing so he took power away from Baratheon yes-men and put it in the hands of Lannister men, but Tyrion suspects that Janos is loyal to Littlefinger (Littlefinger claims as much to Ned), and that Varys is just using him to indirectly attack Littlefinger.
Such a masterfully crafted and acted scene. Everything about it is just brilliant.
No matter how many times I watch this scene it always gets me.
IDK how many Emmy's Sean Bean has but it's not enough.
You know you’re in over your head when Cersi and Varys step in to say stop
This is the first scene that made me cry.
Same
Second for me, first was Lady's death💔
Richard Powell No one will ever see your comment. ;-p
Richard Powell Stop being rude. I'm at a sensitive time in my life.
Owen Penhaligon Thanks. I lied about it being a sensitive time. I just wanted to block his dumb ass, like I will do for you in 3 seconds.
I love how Varys tries to stop Joffrey at 3:46, because he knows it is a stupid move.
No becuase Varys and Illyrio they weren't ready for war yet. Varys didn't give a shit about the innocent or the good of the realm.
He wanted Westeros and Dothraki fight each other and then Aegon would show up with the Golden Company and saved the day.
@Nathan Phillips In season one Varys character followed the books. That's why he conspired with Illyrio. Varys in the books and first seasons didn't care about the good of the realm but he had his own motiations. That's why he tried to kill Daenerys and didn't give a shit to protect her and Viserys.
And he proves it when he kills Kevan because he tried to fix Cercei's stupidity.
Removing Aegon just ruined Varys character. He became a plot device.
yy
@@user-pf7zw9pi6v varys always and ever served the people. He knew killing Ned would result in thousands of dead
@@SongJiangShiJin Varys didn't give a shit about people. He wanted to make Aegon king. That's why he killed Kevan and Pycell.
Tywin - What killed your father.
Arya - Loyality my lord.
Be at peace, Son of Gondor.
My favorite character dead in the first season.......
Sucks...right?
Anniie24601 hell yea it does
+Sliverghost164 One Does Simply Let a Decent Character Live.
+crashpal Brace yourselves, more characters you love will die.
+Sliverghost164 Yes Game of Throns love it to kill nice characters.
Me: "There's no way a TV show would kill off its main character in the first season! Someone will save him!"
"Nooooooo!!!!!"
GoT: "Welcome to Game of Thrones.."
They did save Jon Snow, another lead character. That is where it started becoming a regular show.
I said "Yes, my man Littlefinger is winner!"
@@rinidmoron yeah but that was going to happen regardless as we see in the books.
Not sure how many people noticed at 4:02 but that shot could have been very important. We see varys give baelish a 'wtf have u done' look, as baelish smiles. Would have loved to know if baelish conviced joffrey to change his mind
Wouldn't surprise me, that "they have the soft hearts of women" is a very Littlefinger thing to say.
The only times Ned ever lied, was to hold a promise to his sister. And to save his life and his family.
When even *Cersei* said it's bad idea. You know he fucked up big time.
The Starks should've just called up their cousin Tony. War = over
CRF X I don't get it... xD
WinterSkySun Tony Stark...
Come on man!!!
Andrew Winchester Oh, right, Stark, Stark... Seems I've got a slow engine (never watched Ironman though, only the Avengers), cheers! :D
+Andrew Winchester The ignorance hurt me.
+CRF X there cousin from the ... future ?
So well played out. When you see the scene go eerily quiet despite all those people yelling as Ned looks up at them.
The psychology in this is excellent. You would be shock and everything would be surreal.
THIS was the birth of the new Winterfell.
One where Sansa finds the courage to have littlefinger executed and become the Queen of a Winterfell that was not just a part of the seven kingdoms.
One where Arya finds the anger to kill the Freys and be arguably one of the greatest knights ever lived.
Eddard Stark's death was a gift of promise that saw the Stark's rise to become one of the greatest Kingdoms in Westeros. He died because Westeros was not ready for a Stark ruler.
I absolutely love that Ned barks out a command to the first Night’s Watch brother he sees and Yoren is instantly like, “I gotchu bro!” without question.
i thought he turned his head in betryal
@@sunnyyawus7909 I dont know what Yoren „got“.
I mean what did Ned command him to do?
He said "Baelor", referring to the statue of Baelor the Blessed upon which Arya was perching. He wanted him to get Arya and make sure she was safe. Even in his final moments, looking out for his kids.@@kage2479
@@kage2479 Arya was crouched on the statue of Baelor and Ned wanted Yoren to get to her to keep her safe.
That's what honor get you... people will die for you fight for you and will help you anytime.... people comments that his honor was stupid but don't understand that it's his honor that made whole north and his son fight for him while tywin son kill him, ramsy kills his father.....
