I think Ron gaining nothing over 25 years is more incredulous! Here's how I think this stuff works, whether it's Mr 70lb or my old friend Ron. When things get tough guys like you and I dig in, we lean on what we know works which is effort & consistency. These are the foundational basics. If instead what you lean on is program design, reducing the weight to perfect form, slowing down reps and any number of advanced nuances I can see how he'd lose it all on the way back down to 150lb.
I'm helping a co-worker with starting his journey in lifting weights. He's been lifting for a while, but with no direction or idea on what to do. We were talking yesterday and he said something to the effect of "I don't do that because it's hard." I was speechless, although I shouldn't have been. He also avoided leg training. He's waiting for me to divulge some secret method that requires minimal effort..... Gonna be a long road
It might be worth it to have him mirror you for a small portion of a workout to get through that initial learning curve. Maybe something with machines as those are pretty easy to work on good technique and really drive effort up. A lot of people are just afraid of the initial bout of DOMs (combination of flirting with hard effort and the overall novelty). Once they realize that the body adapts pretty quickly and doesn't have debilitating soreness... they should be able to commit. 💪
"Optimal" bros are becoming an actual hindrance at my gym. Every single day, virtually all the time when I'm there, there's at least one young guy who's hauled an adjustable bench over to the cable stack doing those facing the bench incline single arm pulldown things. Me being a nosy bastard can say that I've never seen them do a bodyweight pullup let alone weighted, they never go ham on the plate loaded high row, they never do barbel rows or deadlifts, not ever dumbell rows. My lats blew up during covid when all I could do to "target" them were heavy ass pullup, and they're still pretty nuts relative to the rest of my back. I think it's a desire to do work, but not hard work, and have an "expert " validating their decision in their back pocket. Because single arm lat pulldowns aren't hard, I don't care what anyone thinks. They feel lovely, but don't do shit. The same logic applies to a whole myriad of lifts. If it's filtered down so that me in Ireland in a small town gym notices it means that it must be endemic!
Mike said beginners should be doing more free weight/barbell movements and machines are mostly for more advanced He should probably be more clear on his videos though
No matter the training style, progressive overload is king. I’ve recently went back to a rest pause based training style because it’s efficient and I enjoy it. But the focus is still progression, even after 20 years of doing this. As Faz says, our only loyalty should be to our results.
Definitely. There has always been a subsection of the lifting population who are more interested in appearing intelligent, than actually getting big. In my day it was the HIT Jedis with Superslow and super abbreviated routines. History repeats itself but human nature remains the same.
12:30 wow didn't expect to get a life lesson. But I think you hit the nail on the head, we see the same thing with coaches son. He gets the nod before the other guy even if he is slightly better. Also got me thinking no player is bigger than the club, just look how Man U treated Ronaldo or Barca Messi.
If you dont like the garbage content, dont click on it. If you keep clicking on it, he's gonna keep making it. Boycott it, like we did Bud light here. You are correct though, some people just want to stand out from everyone else. I just want results and after 30 years in the gym, i dont waste time on the "new cutting edge , optimal training " . Basics with progressive overload, consistently equals results.

Hi, Faz Its been a long time since u ve been / done a podcast with guys like Alex, GVS, Steve Shaw, Natural Hipertrophy It we really be interesting to see u sync with those guys after a long time
I’ll always stick with Faz - “be married to results nothing else”. And after all the volume frequency lengthened partials all this other stuff the one thing that has always given results is progressive overload. Follow a routine to do that and your set. Take your bench from 135-225 for reps and your chest grew. Squats from 225 -315 for reps your quads grew. Lat pulldown from 90-215 your back grew. Basic stuff works. It’s boring it’s not sexy but it works!
Another huge part of why new / different things sell well, is that it legitimizes all your previous failure to progress. "It's not your fault, you just didn't have the right plan!" We love that.
Maybe I am missing something.. although Mike is hyper focused on technique, he still preaches hard effort with progressive overload, with not a huge amount of volume. Most of his sessions also have 1-2 major compounds. To me, he doesn’t seem like the enemy.
@@Fazlifts do you feel he has become more dogmatic with his focus on technique? His instance on stopping a rep instantly as soon as form breakdown and you can’t complete a rep is silly, particularly for pull movements
@@liamburns8554 not dogmatic no I think he's decided to change his marketing strategy to heavily rely on clickbait ragebait content. See GVS video in the description which echoes my thoughts.
I did get into the high volume territory. But i also read the studies. And i had to go to MINIMUM rpe8. So after going drom a scrawny (170cm) 58kg to 80kg (with more fat) on simple programs like starting strength and candito/alphadestiny. Then i got fomo because it no longer worked. I had learnt how to grind reps. Time to add volume. But not a little. Optimal was hogh volume. So i did 5x5 squats , 5*12 leg press , 5*25 leg ext followed by sth similar for hams ... I did that for two years. I pushed reaaaalllly hard. And the weights got nowhere. After two years my max was 10kgs heavier on squat (bench had gone up but i had to stop bb pushes as elbows were destroyed). Then covid hit. And i did nothing as i was burnt up and also emotionally not the best period for me. In almost two years of nothing. I got back into training. Regained almost all in 3 months and i was dumbfounded. I cant gain back all that this quickly doing whatever i like and stall for two years doing the opTimAl routine... Guess it wasn't that optimal. At least not for me

I realized something when I was thinking through how so many people either don't resistance train at all, or do so in an extremely poor manner. Yoyo dieting might actually cause them to regress. Let's say you just start a cut and only go to the gym to run on the treadmill. Follow a fad diet, make some pretty good losses but don't actually make long term changes in dietary habits. You hit a reasonable goal weight, get lazy and...you know what happens. You end up back where you started. Or did you? Did you actually retain all of your muscle in the cut? Is this how we got to 'skinny fat' being the status quo? Yes, it does make a lot of sense to do cardio on a cut, but the amount of folks that just do that and ignore all the other tools in the gym is seemingly commonplace. Using fat loss alone is a good way to change your appearance in a drastic way. But it might be fleeting. Adding muscle is slower and requires more effort, but man... those appearance changes are there for the long term. Put the two together... you might look like a new person.
Couldn't agree more. Honestly I try to not even watch the clock bait stuff Mike does. I just ignore the vids, talking about it or watching would just fuel the behavior.
