"Without a doubt, there is guitar." -Geebz, 2022.
Glad he did this one, because now he has a much more representative idea of what Muse are about... Exogenesis is kinda one end of the Muse spectrum.
@@george474747 I need some Plug In Baby!
😂
@@george474747 he already reacted to stockholm syndrome
@@Flugmorph oh, thanks. i'll check that out.
Basically any song off their first 4 albums you can't go wrong with. The opening riff is a distorted bass, distorted guitar comes in second, the closing riff is guitar and bass as well, the chorus is just power chords and bass, super simple but effective.
You can't call anything produced by Muse "simple". There are layers over layers over layers of stuff in all their songs.
The chorus is in no way "just power chords". Look up the music sheet for the guitar. And most of the melody in the chorus comes from the bass line and the synths. It is super complex in terms of production and arrangement.
@@GilBellamy I'm just talking about the bulk of the song, if you watch live, Matt is playing simple power chords, and Chris is playing a very simple bass melody, now the studio version I'm sure has plenty of layers and is complicated. Have a great day.
True on the first 4 albums
Personally I think The Resistance is better than Showbiz or Origin of Symmetry. Absolution and Black Holes and Revelations are practically perfect albums though, I’ll give you that!
@@alexshadowfax1119 yeah, but even live there's Morgan playing the Synths and there is prerecorded stuff sounding as wel. And there are a lot of effects on Matt's guitar to match the power of the record.
Hell yeah, the song that got me into Muse! This whole album is burned into my memory forever. I listened to it almost on repeat for the hundreds of hours I spent playing Morrowind the summer after high school.
Ah ah it's funny because I've got myself some lovely memories of playing Oblivion for hours while listening to Origin of Symmetry on loop. 😆
Both of these comments hit me hard with nostalgia; simpler times, happier times ❤️
This Muse album is absolute fire start to finish. Geebz, you've got to check out what is IMO the most interestingly arranged song on the album: Butterflies and Hurricanes. Theres a great deal of complexity but elegance, momentum but journey, and huge spectrum of dynamics at play in that song.
yes Yes YES! I've been begging him to do Butterflies and Hurricanes. Let's get it going!
Butterflies and Hurricanes or Thoughts from a Dying Atheist
Stockholm Syndrome
There is not a stinker on absolution. Not a one
Key words START to FINISH. This album is one of my all time favorites.
Best bass intro ever!
If you are looking for a song with somewhat of a similar bass, you should listen to Seijatachi by People In The Box. Its a Japanese Alt Rock song and every time I hear it I always think of Hysteria, and vice versa
This was muse at their all time best
I recently went back down the Muse live performance rabbit hole on youtube. Still one of the best live bands of all time. If you spend more time exploring their music pre-2010 you'll find they are heavily influenced by classical composers and a lot of softer tracks make you feel like you're in a western movie, as well as the spacey vibes. I always describe their music as 'Beethoven and Tarantino having a duel in space'
Not a bad description, mate!
Shit, this is so accurate!
I belive Chris, the bass player, uses 3 amps and cabs, nr. 1 has clean sound, nr. 2 Big Muff fuzz and nr. 3 synth effect , akai Deep impact. He use a lot of various effects, but always have one amp with clean sound to preserve bottom end.
The bass on this one!
If you are looking for a song with somewhat of a similar bass, you should listen to Seijatachi by People In The Box. Its a Japanese Alt Rock song and every time I hear it I always think of Hysteria, and vice versa
Get well, Geebz! Your analysis was pretty spot on for a lot of this song, in my opinion. it's the Bass line that's driving the whole song. As a bassist, any time you go into the bass section at a Guitar Center, or any music store really, SOMEONE is letting this riff rip, to show up the other guy playing "7 Nation Army".
I can play it on my guitar with a plectrum. Great fun! How Chris smashes is out on bass with his fingers though is just immense.
It's the baseline that drives most of their songs..
My favorite Muse album by a long shot.
You should check out some of their older stuff. Some of my favorites are Sunburn, Showbiz, and Citizen Erased
Muse is one of the most eclectic bands I've followed, so you will hear all kinds of elements and genres if you continue listening to their music. Thanks for the reactions.
You need to do Knights of Cydonia next. Beautifully crafted journey of a song.
I was going to say the same thing
Best Muse song, no doubts
Matt Bellamy switches between keys and guitar mid song sometimes
While singing
One of the few bands who are best experienced live. I'd take an audio of a live performance over the studio version any day with Muse. Not so many bands I'd say that about.
Subbing for more Muse. There's not enough people doing reactions that actually have an analytical purpose to them. I appreciate your content so much!
I have 3 others on this channel from Muse but more to come!
That intro is all bass and one of the best bass lines ever. This album is also peak Muse from back when they were considered Alternative Rock. The electronic/synth elements gained more room in their compositions around the album "Black Holes and Revelations" and (in my opinion) went overboard on "2nd law". Muse unfortunately lost me on their latest album, "Simulation Theory". It's so far from their sound and the compositions are just weaker.
A suggestion for a chain of songs that should give you a good indication of their sound evolution:
- "Sunburn", "Muscle Museum", "Cave", "Uno" (from "Showbiz" 1999)
- "Plug-in Baby" or "New Born" (from "Origin of Symmetry" 2001)
- "Time is Running Out", "Sing for Absolution", "Stockholm Syndrome", or "Butterflies and Hurricanes" (from "Absolution" 2003) // This entire album is a masterpiece
- "Starlight", "Supermassive Black Hole", or "Knights of Cydonia" (from "Black Holes and Revelations" 2006)
- "Uprising" or "Undisclosed Desires" (from "The Resistance" 2009) // I think this album would appeal a lot to you. It ends with a 3-part orchestral suite.
- "Madness" or "Supremacy" (from "The 2nd Law" 2012)
- "Dead Inside" or "Psycho" (from "Drones" 2015)
- "Dig Down" (from "Simulation Theory" 2018)
Now if you want a broad representation of their sound, I'd go with: "New Born", "Butterflies and Hurricanes", "Uprising", "Madness". (Stockholm Syndrome would be on there, if you hadn't reacted to it already).
You know, I always forget about Plug-in Baby, but that song really is a great single.
100% agree with every word, I'd also include Unnatural Selection in that list too 😁👌
@@JaySay And really fun to play on guitar! It was one of the first riffs i learned on the guitar. I was so hyped when I finally nailed it.
@@OneManStandsOfficial Also a good one. This is the problem though, there are so many good songs to pick! Might as well just go through their entire discography. :D
This album was one of the earliest to blend electronic music with prog rock and metal. There aren't any two songs on the album that sound the same. I saw them live in 2014 and They actually use and fully electric digital bass for this song live, with a scratch pad instead of strings. It was one of the coolest things, and as a bass player myself, truly awe inspiring.
radiohead did it better, earlier
@@georgeaiken2965 that's an opinion
Hey Geebz! I’ve been subbed to the channel awhile, love your videos so very much. Any chance you could enable subtitles / closed captioning? As someone with an auditory processing issue it would be immensely helpful. Thanks for your videos, I hope you feel better soon.
They have a great variety of sounds depending on the album. My favourite song is Starlight, I find it cheerful in a special way.
So glad you did this video, Muse will now be a part of my soundtrack at work tonight. I think Absolution is their best album. Stockholm Syndrome is a heavier track from that album. However, I would highly recommend the song Butterflies & Hurricanes. Hell yeah.
I agree that the first four albums are the best. They seem to have lost their way musically and lyrically since then. Anyhow, people tend to focus on Matt Bellamy, but I think it's Chris Wolstenholme's bass that makes this band.
The fifth album, The Resistance, is thematically about a revolution against our wealthy overlords. The entire album is so cleanly overproduced it sounds like it was written and performed by robots. I've heard songs from it, usually "Uprising", in various commercials, movie trailers, sporting events many times over the years. The glaring contradiction of listening to a song about fighting the man being used to sell me stuff is annoying. The fact that Muse still sounds like an android factory is why they're not as good anymore. They lost their soul. I still love "Madness" though.
@@damnesia1869 They experiment and their only bad album is 2nd Law, the others are excellent. Simulation Theory and Will of the People are fantastic albums, unique and catchy.
Knights of Cydonia, Butterflies and Hurricanes, Plug in Baby, Supermassive Black Hole are some of my Muse faves and well worth checking out
This was the first song I was given to study as a "guitar song". Kept at it for days.
It's a very simple song, on the surface, but has lots of nice details.
it gives you the impression of a 5/4, but it's straight 4/4
the solo is so, so much fun
This is still my favourite Bass line ever after 20 years, Chris Wolstenholme is a fantastic Bassist, he drives most of the album, and has pushed the most recent album to be heavy. For Absolution is one of Muses best albums, I have just put it on and hit repeat so many times over the last 19 years.
i’m going to watching the video
i’m poor so i can’t do patreon :(
but i wanna suggest you to react to Jean Michel Jarre music.
He is the pioneer of electronic music!
maybe you already know it, but i think his music needs to be analysed and maybe more popularity.
he entered the guinness world record 4 times for the biggest concerts ever.
i think you need to react and decompose to full albums like oxygene, rendez vous and equinoxe, or something more strange like zoolook.
they are album that need to be listen fully, because each track is connected to the others, it’s like a journey, and a very good journey. Hoping that you will read this comment and making you interested :)
cheers from italy 🇮🇹
Great reaction! This song NEVER fails live! They always kick it up a notch (if that's even possible from the studio version, but they manage it!) That bass line has grabbed me from day one! The song may not be overtly complex, but man, does it ever kick a$$!!
Muse was always a killer band for me. I loved _Black Holes and Revelations,_ and _The Resistance_ quite a lot, and after you did the vid for _Stockholm Syndrome_ I realized that I heard quite a lot from _Absolution_ without owning the album, soooooooo of course I needed to get it!
Great groove going on with _Hysteria,_ and as always the bass playing is super forward in the mix and very punchy and loud, they do quite a lot as a 3 piece band.
My dad always remarked about the band Boston having this phenomenal "Wall of Sound" as they called it (which they absolutely do!) and for a 3 piece band, Muse definitely gives you a lot to hold onto with their music.
I would still love for you to hear the live version of _Knights of Cydonia,_ Geebz.
ruclips.net/video/j8WP7aOD_9Q/видео.html
Fantastic stuff, and you'll really enjoy it. So many people have suggested it over the year, too!
Thanks for the vid, Geebz, Muse is always welcome on the channel for me!😁
Keep on rocking!
Take care of yourself brother, health is number 1 and we need our Decomposer in the best of health
This whole album is super solid, got me into the band waaaaaay back!
One of my favourite bass lines for ANY band. The way Chris Wolstenholme keeps the pace up for practically the whole song (fingerstyle), is amazing.
Brilliant song. Simple, but everything is just so tight and well done. Awesome bass riff complemented with cool guitar riffs and a dark and moody tone with vocals. Good stuff.
I love seeing those little moments where you shake your head a little like "wow"
MUSE for me is summed up in 3 words; Tight, Polished, and Purposeful.
I'd love to know Chris's note count on this song. I don't think he plays a single note longer than an 8th note. Dude is moving the entire time.
Yep. And believe it or not, what he plays in the chorus is more difficult to play than the main riff.
@@fabioriato I get so mad at Chris sometimes because of how deceptively difficult this chorus is haha
I love playing along to this song on bass. By the end of the "chorus" section of the solo, my left arm feels like it's about ready to fall off.
@@fabioriato Not to sound cocky, but I find that the main riff is harder than the chorus. It's got sustained notes which lets your right hand rest a little, and the "shape" of what is being played isn't overly complex.
@@paramourcat it’s funny because Matt made the main riff on guitar and then had Chris play it, and I guess that was boring because Chris made that chorus OBNOXIOUS
All time great song in my life. That opening bass riff grabs my medula oblongata in a death grip and the whole track just has its way with me from there!
Live.... They are insanely good live... Seriously... They're THAT band that can make it sound like studio... It's amazing
Wrong, they are way better live than in the studio.
Watching them live gives a lot of understanding into how they make a lot of the effects, like a Kaoss pad built into a guitar... Phenomenal.
Seeing them live in 3 months. Been a fan since 2006 and never got the $ to see them until now
@@baaz12he… said that
So the Bass uses 4 channels. 1 Animato, 1 Big Muff (Black Russian), 1 Clean and 1 is actually a saw wave synth playing alongside it. He usually plays with the synth pre-recorded and can be confirmed in a couple of videos where his wireless pack cuts out for a split second (along with all the bass) but the saw wave was still playing.
Dude, I can feel the amount respect towards you, it's immense. Reading your face while you analyze is all I need to see. You know stuff. That being said, be open minded. You seem very hard to engagingly discuss with. Dunno why, feels like it. And don't be insecure about speaking a feeling just cause you can't logically explain it. No one's gonna mind the Trent Reznor comparison. In fact such moments lighten up the "low fun dryness" of the analytic parts.
Nice. I might be by myself, but there new stuff (the latest album not currently out yet) is not that good. But they do have a lot of different Genres under there belt. Lots of great songs. Starlight, Madness, New Born, Supermassive Black Hole, Supremacy, Panic Station, Psycho, Unintended, Sing for Absolution, Reapers, Knights of Cydonia, Dead Inside, Uprising, etc. LOTS of good ones.
I wasn't blown away by their stuff for a few years there. But I thought Simulation Theory was an absolute cracker. One of my favourites from them.
Starlight, Unintended, Sing for Absolution are fine songs and all, especially as vocal performances, but there are easily like 6 other songs on Sim Theory that I would rather listen to. Plenty of good old songs and newer ones.
Geebz I appreciate you so much. Honesty, integrity, wisdom, skill, humour and love. You deserve all respect and love you real down to earth S.O.B
I like the smile, you can't go wrong with Muse, talented guys, great riffs.
Butterflies and Hurricanes - one of the all-time best Muse songs in my opinion. And BEAUTIFULLY arranged, with orchestra and Rachmaninoff-esque piano solo. Wild stuff.
Second comment after listening to your commentary. Muse is a 3 piece and Bellamy does the guitar and vocals in addition to keyboard. There are live songs where the drummer and bassist are playing but Matt Bellamy is singing and playing keyboard. He has his guitar on his back and then will step back from the keys and rip on guitar.
So you're correct in that it's sometimes keys and sometimes guitar but it's always a bassist and drummer. They just put some cool effects on the bass (see Time is Running Out).
Learnt this for my GCSE music performance around 17 years ago and it’s still one of the first riffs I play whenever I pick up my bass. Absolute classic and it bagged me an A 😎
Would love to see you react to Knights of Cydonia live in Rome or Butterflies and Hurricanes live at Wembley! I'm the bassist of a Muse tribute band and they're (obviously) one of my favourite bands of all time, but in particular basically every track on albums 2, 3 and 4 would make great reaction video content haha!
I absolutely love this song. Whats always done it for me, as a local band rock/metal drummer, is how the drums push and evolve the heavy sections, which might normally have been the job of an extra guitar line or a vocal florish etc. Dom doesn't just play his same beat across the bars, he adds a bit, adds a bit, builds it up, grows the tension. Amazing.
Abe does much the same in the deftones track Bloody Cape - highly recommended if not previously done!
Hey Geebz! Glad you circled back to some classic Muse before they went all weirdo scientology. You should check out their cover of "Feeling Good". I need you to do an In Flames song from the period between Jester Race and Clayman.
@Johnny_Haha How about Goliath's Disarm their David's, Gyroscope, Embody the Invisible, Swim.
When did Muse go weirdo scientology?
Your shoulder looks way better Geebz!!! It's nice seeing you healed up.
The bass line is played on bass. The solo is guitar. Matt has a Z.Vex Fuzz Factory built into his custom made Manson guitar. Look up a rig rundown. It’s wild the stuff Matt has.
EDM LOL! Nah, seriously this is the band that made Guitar Hero famous (that's right). So many great tracks. Saw them in Glasto in 2010. Check out the live version of Streets Have No Name w/ Edge. The whole set was incredible. Pers fav track of theirs (and should be yours) is Citizen Erased. For one moment!!!
That bass line... OMG times a million...
You're actually dead on with the EDM thing! They really lean into that on their album 2nd Law and onwards! I prefer their earlier stuff but their are definitely songs where they blend their old style REALLY well with their new style! Awesome reaction! Get some rest and get better soon!
I like it when simple things become very complex! these guys are nuts! take care of yourself sir! aaawright!
You definitely need to watch Muse's live performance
Hey Geebz. Great vid, as always. Just wanted to stop by to say that if you're at all interested in a polyphonic bath of pure exultant joy, I highly recommend the band Fang Island. I'd suggest Sideswiper or Welcome Wagon, both of which are pretty quick but very dense listens.
Keep on rockin', Geebz.
I was just looking for good reactions to this song and here comes my favourite reactor to save the day
Chris (the bassist) uses a fuzz pedal for his bass - or, at least, did, in their nitty gritty days and before a more established live engineering/mixing/4th member.
This track is REALLY fun to learn as a bassist. Again, another difficult bassist track though lol this one because it's so much over the place, not because of the pace. That's what makes it so fun to play though, actually much fun in the same way Something by The Beatles is.
Edit: Prince - Kiss also use a fuzz pedal for the bass. I'm surprised - or at least was, with my inspirations and learning bass when I did - how many don't hear or pay attention to the details in bass riffs, effects, technicals or melodies, or even octave changes or dualing
This song is just as heavy live by the way with just as much distortion, except in most -at least older cases - the vocals were more reverby or stadium like kind of, so, well, maybe compression in studio but not only that. They're greater live than in studio for the most part, which is insane.
If you listen to a live clip sometime, make sure it's line recorded properly or at least have decent sound quality but idk how best to achieve that, a music DVD maybe. YT sound compression is crap for the most part, at least I feel that way.
The instrument at the beginning is the bass guitar with some synth textural effects on it as well. This has always been THE quintessential Muse track for me, bot just because I'm a bassplayer but it's just a beautifully written song too. That whole album I've always seen as an album to listen to at the end of the world party...I also covered it with a shed load of other Muse tracks too lol
Awwright! Muse are great! This album is top notch. All the previous albums to this one are also amazing. You should be checking more from these guys! I'm still here!
Each album they explore a new genre. Simulation theory was very 80s electro synthwave driven, Drones was heavy metal, and their newest album coming out now is more EDM-y. Each genre is a journey in itself.
Please check out the band Fair To Midland! Either Musial Chairs or Dance of the Manatee! They were signed to Serj Tankian's label Serjical Strike. You will not be disappointed! Keep up the good work and feel better soon!
Muse live at Tempelhof Sounds Festival 2022, Berlin. On Arte Concert. They are just great live.
You have to see a live performance by Muse to understand their genre.
This is a brilliant and classic Muse song. The guitarwork is great, but as many others said, it's all about the bass on this one. I'm always amazed by Chris Wolstenholme, powering and ripping through this bassline with just his fingers. I can play it on guitar, but the bass is another story. Still practising hard haha!
Love to see you do more by Muse, maybe a Spotlight Session? Keep it up, Aloha!
holy crap this is really good, gotta check muse out
This is the first song anyone should ever hear from Muse, I'm glad you got to it.
My favorite Muse song!
You should watch the cover of this song by The Warning from Liceo where the bassist is 10, the drummer 13 and guitarist/singer 15 and they play this without all the distortion and effects.
Just found your channel, and I feel like I can learn alot from listening to your breakdowns of the mixes (something that sometimes annoys me about certain songs that I feel "could be better"). I've always loved the bass line and tone on this one, specifically. Can't wait to listen to more of your critiques!
This whole album is brilliant!
yes dude! finally the old genius MUSE
I'd love to see you do more electronic music, DJ Shadow or more Aphex Twin ideally!
It starts pure with Bass guitar. Check out live. super tight.
This Muse’s ‘Hysteria’ voted best bassline of all time in 2011.
What a tune. What’s wild is they sound the same live.
Feel better soon please!
Absolute kickass song, hope you feel better soon Geebz
Thank you Geebz
You need to check out their song Micro Cuts
Your family members have good taste. Glad they behested you to do this. One of the best albums they have ever done.
Also, Storm Thorgerson did the album cover and the album after, who also did stuff for Pink Floyd and Mars Volta, among other.
Feel better, Geebz!
This song is a song that told me rock wasn't dead. In the day. I get you better now my friend. You'll never know the good you have helped for newbs like me. I get why you focus on BASS now. I get the math but I would have never got to the understanding without your passive help. Thank you sir! With the harmonics of a fretless Low E - I thank you. Took me a few moons to realize this is all physics and math. I'm not here without your help. Thank you! (I hear it in frequencies - notes are just pointers/ ISO Standards) Edit: Harmonics are key (science nerds... it's the same thing... your microwave oven is a dirty trumpet that can't play JAZZ depending on your personal definition of GOOD JAZZ- do the research) (although let's be nerdy... there's got to be a way to get that magnetron pumping say SKA beats.... DIRTY JAZZ is fine.)
Excellent hat! Boston Scally? I have two, started getting one every birthday and Christmas myself.
I really enjoy muse I see why you say edm I always said electric rock or something they are unique and have their own sound, great album. Time is running out is another good one off this album but they all are killer.
Hey Geebz, you still gotta make your way back to Trivium, "Shogun" (the song) specifically, fits right in with the channel.
There's a brazillian band called Scalene with two tracks called Névoa and Febril that have that riff based energy with insane production stuffs, I really recommend ^^🔥
That album is sooo good.
Hey man, love the channel! This was one of the bass songs I practiced for weeks to nail down.
I have a a song that I do not see many reactions to that I would love to see your take. I have hesitated to request it in the past because it is probably one of the most emotionally powerful songs I have ever heard, to the point that even as one of my favorite songs, I do not listen to it often.
If you are interested, the song is Nothing More - Fade In / Fade Out
If you end up listening I strongly suggest watching the music video. Gets me every time.
Good Morning from WV Have a great day!
Muse is a 3 man band. Guitar, bass and drums. The beginning sequence is the bass line. Bad ass bass line I might add.
You gotta check out "Butterflies and Hurricanes" and "Apocolypse Please" from Absolution. "Space Dementia" and "Plug in Baby" on Origin of Symmetry!
All hail Big Daddy Geebz! 🤘🤘🤘
Keep up the good work Geebz! I would love to see you react to "After The Burial"! Some of the best riffs in all of metal. I recommend: Laurentian Ghosts, Neo Seoul, The Fractal Effect, Exit Exist, or honestly any sing by them. They've never made a bad song.
I'd like to request Owane & Jack Gardner - "Swedish Coffee" or "glitter" their new album has some KILLER fusion grooves it's the raddest shiz right now
Matt belamy is an underrated guitarist, he's amazing
This was a great way to start my day! Not sure when you record this, but hope you're feeling better now. =)
One of the best Muse songs. Geebz, a band I'd love you look at is the Polish prog-rock band Riverside. I think you'd enjoy them. Keep up the good work. 🤘
Map of the Problematique- IMHO best Muse song.
