In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Muse for the first time this year. I haven't heard much from this British band, but what I have heard is very impressive...and Hysteria is no exception. It has a great hook and interesting point of view. Come along for the ride!

Butterflies and Hurricanes from the same album please :)
Or Absolution in its entirety 🤗
The best version is from the Wembley HAARP video!! Watching Matt play that grand piano is sublime!
@@michaelbriefs9764 Definitely the HAARP version.
Yes, please! 🔥
Butterflies and Hurricanes!
SPACE DEMENTIAAAA
I really agree
This is one of their most interesting songs, musically speaking, and the lyrics are also very good.
“United States of Eurasia” request button ->
I think Doug should do the whole album "The Resistance". So many interesting references to classical music, etc.
@@toddnielson8009yep, The Resistance is the most classical among their albums
@@toddnielson8009 Honestly any of the albums from Origin of Symmetry through The Resistance would be ripe for an EPL
United States of Eurasia is such an underrated song one of my favourites
YAS OMG PLEASE DOUG
That bassline became iconic the day it came out!
Yeah, for any other band that base track would have been played for half a minute and been called a solo... 🙂
I can play it on guitar with a pick but people don't realise how hard it is to rattle through the bassline on repeat on a big bass guitar using only your fingers
@@Camberwell86 Chris is just built different. His technique and the way he plays so fast and with such a consistent attack on the strings is just nuts
@@bassfuzz5783 and during the first half of his career he was a massive alcoholic (by his own admission) and used to play this on stage every night completely shitfaced 🍻 😂
@@Camberwell86 yeah that too, I think he was in rehab during the making of the resistance of I remember correctly. Which made it the album with the biggest Matt flair since Chris wasn't as present
We took a cd player and Muse's Absolution cd into the delivery room when my daughter was born. She took her first breath to Hysteria. I wasn't allowed to stay in the hospital that first night and spent a sleepless night at home trying to figure out the bass line for Hysteria. 18 years later, i was finally able to take her to our first Muse concert. It was like pure Beatlemania for her. When they started playing Hysteria...i might have lost it a little bit too. 🥺
Mega!!!!!
My son plays this on bass and blows me away every time he does. Years of practice and its note perfect now.
I tried to play this song for 23 years now and I still don't smash it. Every time I struggle with the E-part, the rest I would say is 95%. But I wouldn't dare to play it live, it's still not there. And I still keep on playing it every time till I have it 😊
Music teacher here. A high-school student introduced me to Muse in my “Music In Our Lives” course. I became a huge fan, and I thank that student to this day for turning me on to such a great band. Thank you, Dr. Helvering, for featuring “Hysteria” on your channel. Love your videos - keep up the great work!!
that student is a real one
Yes! Great choice, Doug. What makes this bassline so legendary, and thus the song, is its sheer brutal _relentlesness._ No pause ever. Just keeps going, full steam ahead.
Relentless is the word.
Seeing Chris nail this bassline EVERY time he plays it, and the fact it requires such endurance (many people can nail this bassline with practice, but very few could play this for what is essentially on repeat for the ENTIRE song) just amazes me.
Most recently I saw him play this bassline while he was standing RIGHT in front of me in Glasgow, rain POURING down, and he still nailed every note. The vibes of that gig were phenomenal.
If you wanna hear Matts voice clear as day listen to Muses's cover of Nina Simone's Feeling Good.
He sounds like he's just having so much fun in that song. 😆
(except the megaphone verse)
@@aldeayeahI have to disagree but I respect your opinion
I've seen Muse at least 5 times and they reproduce this song, including the bassline and sound of the bass 100% live.
Likewise it’s always amazing. Every time I’ve seen them the encore is knights of cydonia which absolutely goes off
As a bass player, I APPROVE of this track selection! Muse is a great band.
I have to admit, I have a soft spot for any song (though especially rock songs) that gives the bass player something substantial. It feels all too rare.
This is my favourite Muse song. I love the whole album.
Matt Bellamy invited The Warning to open for them in Mexico, and in the UK. He was so pleased with Dany, the Warning's guitarist, that he gifted her a one-off mustard yellow custom guitar. The Warning bassist, Ale, played Hysteria when she was 10...and showed off by playing it over the top of the neck. The Warning has 50 original songs, all by their early 20s. Here is Ale showing off by playing over the top of the neck. ruclips.net/video/fU26wmlF3yg/видео.html
heck YEAH
Yeah the few covers they did on that show were specifically geared towards showcasing their skills that they sent to Berklee College of Music, Crazy Train was for Dany, Everlong was for Pau and Hysteria for Ale. They later attended a summer program there after getting enough funds to enroll, despite only Dany being on the age limit of 15, Pau and Ale were only 13 and 10 respectively. Their mom had to carry her short-scale bass around. On of their teachers there was David Ellefson, Megadeth bassist, so that's pretty cool.
Favorite Band and heard this one performed live. feeling that bass rumble through the stadium is incredible. also this song is absolutely Chris's show
When Chris starts playing this song live, gives me goosebumps every single time
You should do United States of Eurasia or Citizen Erased next, both incredible songs. In my humble opinion both are much better than Hysteria.
100%. Citizen Erased is one of my top 5 Muse songs.
Citizen erased pleaseeeee
Map of the problematique gotta be one of the most beautiful muse songs ever
My favourite band and also the favourite of my son who is 40years younger which shows their appeal spans the generations ( he doesn’t like much else I listen to). If you get the chance to see them Live Doug then beg borrow or steal a ticket as they have been putting on unbelievably astounding shows for 20 years.
Yeah, I've been to 3 concerts and my mom has been on two of those with me. We started listening to them in the same year. Heck, even my grandma loves some of their songs, and recently she hasn't been liking a lot of foreign stuff (grandpa's influence and the propaganda from TV, sadly, have been affecting her) so, that says a lot to me
Have to do more, Muse. Your music knowledge is greatly appreciated
They use a lot of functional harmony and "proper" voice leading in their chord progressions. I think of them like a composer from the Romantic era.
Great choice Doug! One of my favorite songs from my favorite band. Hysteria is so packed with energy, it’s like the Energizer Bunny, just keeps going. As a band they often come up with interesting chord progressions. 🎶
6:25 - I always loved that Muse made Prog-Pop-Rock, quirky but still trimmed for radio play.
Fun fact about Matt Belamy: his Dad played for the band the Tornadoes who had a US #1 called Telstar back in the 60's.
I love Telstar - very cutting edge for the time. I used to have the 45 and played it to death.
Film Telstar featured Kevin Spacey, James Corden and Ralf Little. Well worth a watch.
Also of note is that the youngsters Chas (and Dave) Hodges played bass and Ritchie Blackmore played lead guitar.
Seen Muse live in Bucharest back in 2007. Still to this day I consider the show to be the best I've ever attended. I've seen some live bands....but man
Muse is one of the bands, you can go back to their earliest work and still be amazed. Muscle Museum and stuff like that.
I saw Muse live in Medison Square Garden years ago. Somehow ended up right next to the stage. This band is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Will never forget.
Would be really interesting to see a review of "Judith" from "A Perfect Circle".
I wholeheartedly agree
@@spunk88888 A GREAT SONG FROM A GREAT BAND !!!
The bass pedal he used is called Big Muff (Electro-Harmonix)
He used more than that to achieve this sound. Scott’s Bass Lessons did a video on it
Knights of Cydonia live in Rome. Stunning.
I have to say, I really enjoy these videos! You bring so much to the table in terms of analysis and it's clear you enjoy what you do. Thank you Doug!
My band covers this. I'm the bassist. It's the one song that makes me nervous every show no matter how many times I've played it. To do it live you have to be so precise with the 16th notes for practically the entire song. It's not a tough riff. But that precision is super-critical to pulling it off.
So many songs you could do by muse. They have heavy songs like Stockholm Syndrome and Reapers, and then beautiful more classical songs like Blackout or United States of Eurasia and much more. One I’ve been listening to again is Take A Bow. The chord sequence is so cool
The best Live Band.
The most talented Composer.
One of the most outstanding musicians.
And just my favourite Band... 😊
You should really check out a live show of this one, to see how relaxed the bassist is playing it. :)
The one from Rome is pretty good.
Muse is so fun. They are so upbeat and full of energy always. Also, phenomenal musicians. You should watch one of their live videos. You won’t be disappointed. Not only are they incredible musically, their audience is huge and plays a big impact on the energy they bring.
@Doug Helvering Watch any Muse Making Of. Especially Making Of The 2nd Law. You will really enjoy it. I promise.
When Muse plays live, Chris W pounds out that bass line absolutely metronomically throughout the track. That’s stamina and precision! And they don’t generally process Matt’s voice as heavily as in the studio version.
BTW, Muse IS a prog band, 100%!
Nice review, I was lucky enough to see Muse live in Glasgow last June, they where superb and they did fantastic job of playing this live.
I second the motion to see you react to The Warning cover this song at their school when they were 10,13,15 years old. The bassist, Ale Villareal, was 10 at the time.
You could try Unintended from the Showbiz album!! It’s one of the few songs that stood out to me because of how different it sounded when compared to their other songs
That bass is face-melting. You just can’t get away from it in this song.
My favorite from Muse:
Stockholm Syndrome
Bliss
Micro Cuts
Micro is so operatic in the vocals. I love it so much. So underrated.
Origin of Symmetry is one of my favorite albums ever.
Stockholm syndrome is my favorite track on that album song rocks great shout out
Listen to the live version... Freaking amazing live... especially his voice.. Live version of any of their tracks are all insanely good
Muse is my fav. band of all time. I totally recommend "City of Delusion", "Liquid State" and "Unnatural Selection". Stay safe!
Went to see muse last year for 4th time live at the Rome olympic stadium was my 2nd show they a stadium band which is a dying breed need more of them if you get a chance beg borrow or steal a ticket never be disappointed best live shows I need go again hysteria my favourite
Great band live. There’s a concert video from Italy here on YT that gives a good sense of the, well, hysteria.
They have twice the energy in their live concerts. Look for “New Born” in the 2010 Wembley concert. Insane..
Absolution and the previous album 'Origin of Symmetry' are untouchable, the latter being one of my favourite albums of all time. It goes from that heavy synth-infused alt rock of New Born, through almost Pink Floyd territory on Citizen Erazed to creepy symphonic opera rock on Microcuts. They also make 'Feeling Good' sound entirely their own. It's just so effin' good.
Surprise you haven’t done this one before. A classic album that gained their breakthrough here in the states. One of the best bass lines in rock history to boot
I actually like muse live more than recorded for album. One of my fave shows in over 30 years of gigs
A personal Muse fave, I absolutely love the distorted megaphone vocals in the verses, especially on the inhales between lines. F’n badass, y’all
Map of the Problematique is a great one also
If you never heard them, definitely take a listen to some of their best (but often not very well known) tracks :
- Citizen Erased from Origin Of Symmetry (2001) (absolute banger of a song)
- Muscle Museum from Showbiz (1999)
- Animals from The 2nd Law (2012)
- The Globalist from Drones (2015)
- Sunburn from Showbiz (1999)
They have HEAPS of realy good tracks, I really couldn't name them all. But if I had to name only 5 : here you go
It's interesting how Sunburn is not their most popular tracks but one of my friends only knew that one except Supermassive Black Hole when we met 😊
Also I'd absolutely add Survival from The 2nd Law, and Algorithm from Simulation Theory, as well as You make me feel like it's Halloween from Will of the people. I have been a fan for 15 years now, and like their newer stuff too, even though a lot is like pop. Also, We Are F*cking F*cked is a banger
@@atriyakoller136 There is no bad Muse songs honestly. I'm personally a little bit less attracted from anything after Black Hole, but yes there is some absolutely wonderful songs in those albums too.
Drones is full of them (I LOVE Aftermath, I think it's one of my favorite Muse song ever... just not for everyone I think)
(also when I say I'm not *as much* of a fan of everything after Black Hole, it's mostly just that there is some skips when I hear the album, while on their older albums I skip absolutely no song because I love all of them)
@@matthieuzglurg6015 I kind of agree. For me the album which I like a little less is, funnily enough, Showbiz, but even there I love about half the songs and like the other half, just not as much
I'm here for more Muse :)
Live version please
Thanks I really appreciate this reaction and professional insight.
One of my favourites for a Saturday morning, after coffee, absolute lifter
I love the bass track on this one. Another great one is Plug In Baby from their second album Origin of Symmetry. That one basically shows some cool things done with scales on the guitar.
Yesss!
One of their all time best.
please do Massive Attack ! Angel and Teardown especially
2003/2004 was a great era of music. Muse, Franz Ferdinand, AX7, etc.
Edit, my fave Muse song is Defector. To me it’s musical construction never gets stale.
For real. Indie and alternative rock, nu-metal etc. dominated from the close of the 90s to the late 00s, and it was fantastic. I feel like we've been in a hip-hop and hip-hop adjacent pop rut for over a decade now, where that's pretty much all the mainstream is. I'm tired of it. We need rock oriented music to come around again. At least I have had RUclips to introduce me to bands like The Hu and Bloodywood in recent years though.
Yes, yes, yes, Doug, this is my all-time favorite song by Muse :)
Doug, as a classical composer I really think you would appreciate Butterflies and Hurricanes, from the HAARP live at Wembley dvd. Halfway the song Matt is playing his inspired by Rachmaninov piece on piano. The songs settings are very classical themselves!
Doug, as a Dream Theater fan have you read about the Muse-DT connection? Mike Portnoy was a big fan of the Absolution album, and "Never Enough" on Octavarium is a Muse tribute. Muse repaid the favor on Black Clouds and Revelations. You'll hear DT's "Panic Attack" in "Assassin" and "Glorious", and the heavy guitar riff in "Knights of Cydonia" is from "In The Name Of God".
This song was so awesome to play the bass and guitar parts on expert on the ps4 rock band video game!!!
one of my fave bands over last 20 years
I'll have to admit. This band is kind of interesting. I have never heard them before. I do like your analysis and maybe I'll check them out further..
You won't regret it
Do yourself a favor and start with the Origin of Symmetry album
Whole album please. One of my favorite records.
Ditto on all the votes for Citizen Erased and also New Born (my fav Muse song), Plug in Baby and Space Dementia - all from Muse's BEST album Origins of Symmetry. Or just do the whole album ❤
I'm a dream theater guy, wich means i usually don't Listen to "radio approved" stuff that much, but, back in 2007/8 if not mistaken, a friend of mine who also is a prog rock/metal fan, told me, "dude go listen to Muse", so i did, there are songs i don't listen (very few), but at that time i learnt that we can't have prejudice about styles, MUSE are amazing, the show is incredible. From there i discovered other bands, radio friendly that are amazing, for example Biffy Clyro, awesome band too. If you want to check anything from them my favourite album is "Puzzle".
If you are a DT fan then you know they wrote two songs on Octavarium inspired by this album from Muse. Never Enough and Panic Attack
Great!!!! I hope you can get to listen to more Muse very soon!!! I recommend Citizen Erased, Space Dementia, New Born, United States of Eurasia, Muscle Museum, Butterflies and Hurricanes, and Unnatural Selection
Unnatural Selection. Underrated for music.
Muse are my favourite band, so I might be little biased, but you can't really appreciate them without seeing them live!
ruclips.net/video/ZqCOzgYQsKI/видео.html
That's a version of Hysteria live!
One of my favorites
There is no better 3 piece band out there. Live they are amazing.
I haven't seen Chris Wolstenholme's gear, but based on what I've heard, that synth sound you're picking up is, I think, an octave pedal, which gives a synth-sub bass sound. And I think he's running it *after* the distortion, which results in some interesting artifacts.
Great reaction Doug!! One of my (if not the) favourite Muse song!! That bass line is what gets me every time - especially live!! Chris just takes off with it! Like on the album, the song is lead into by a short instrumental called 'Interlude' - which perfectly segues into Hysteria.
I'd love to hear your reaction to Map Of The Problematique from the follow up album, Black Holes & Revelations. There's a lot of amazing stuff to dive into with Muse!
And yes, you NEED to check The Wall movie!! Cheers.
You should check out a band called The Warning. 3 sisters from Monterey Mexico. They started doing covers 10 years ago and now have 2 EPs and 3 LPs now. They are a great rock band.
Doug, you should totally check out Map of the Problematique.
MUSE is the best
My favorite Muse tunes are “Bliss” and “New Born”. Would love to see Doug react to either of those!
Missed you this afternoon darn it
would love more muse!!!!! i recommend songs from showbiz and origin of symmetry
It'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on Muse "Map of the Problematique".
counterpoint - I LOVE the effect on the vocals, it puts the voice so far away it's giving me the same vibes as the vocals from Heroes by Bowie which sounded like they were coming at you from across a glacier somewhere. This puts the vocals similarly 'distant' which is just so fitting for THIS song of barely-repressed emoting, you don't want that Right Next to you.
Muscle Museum has their best bass line, or Plug in Baby if not done it which is similar to Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565.
Butterflies & hurricanes should suit you nicely :)
One of the best bass lines. I do like several Hysteria bass covers as you can truly hear the bass lines through the whole song.
A shoutout - while not a "bass" cover, "2 Cellos" has a great version for those that haven't seen it.
My love of music Muse is Unnatural Selection.
I like the way you jam, Doug.
I've got to say that I think Justin Theroux's performance in the music video was award worthy!!
Haven’t seen the video in a long time and it reminds me that every time I see it, I’m like “oh yeah, that’s Justin Theroux!”
that sound is created by having a world-class guitar tech and a good quality pedalboard and talent
Hi Doug, I very rarely comment under videos but here you are interested in a band that makes me vibrate very deeply... You should really be interested in ''Space dementia'', the rest of' 'absolution' (as you did with Dark side of the moon) or 'hoodoo', 'aftermath' which has sounds close to Pink Floyd. Muse is an incredibly interesting band.
Muse have some of the niciest baselines I ever heard, its amazing
To play this song on bass I do the following: Play speed metal for 2 hours prior, take Advil 1/2 hour prior, consume 2 drams of the Macallan 10 minutes prior, press play, enjoy the searing pain in my right hand when finished, consume congratulatory dram of the Macallan.
Awesome song. The pedal point bass line by Chris is a Muthaf*&ka (he hates playing it for the same reason), but it really makes you concentrate on 16th note precision between the plucking hand and fretting hand, absolute MONSTER!
Heard this song so many times but I had never seen the music video before, can see the connection to the wall scene.... You need to watch the wall movie!
Always love Muse. I recommend Madness
Hi Doug, you also need to listen to Muse “Exogenesis symphony parts 1-3”
You should check out "Plug in baby"!
There is a video on yt named "MechBass - Hysteria" (well, more like three), and it should be viewed by all hysteria fans.
Origin of symmetry album next?
