    A nice thing about the Yeoman is that it just has plain LRM launchers with a good amount of ammo. It makes it a good choice to carry alternate munitions to pair with other units. If another friendly unit has TAG, like an Eagle, then carry some semi-guided missiles. If its lance has a Narc launcher instead, fill those bins with Narc-equipped missiles. Then at least one of the LRM 15 bins can be switched to something special like smoke or thunder missiles while still leaving plenty of normal missiles to use in a battle.

      Thanks for listening. I love, love, love special ammo! I am the king of semi-guided LRM's in my group. You just cannot go wrong. I love the thought of the OR with the MML's. But yeah the sit down and volley after volley is its jam. Never used thunder yet (except HBS battletech) which was fun

    For the cost, that’s a lot of launcher and ammo. Special ammo on this scale can shape the battlefield. As long as you remember what you’re there for.
    Still surprised no one has shoved an ARROW IV or two in it.

    I love the Yeoman's wonky design.
    Honestly the simplest fix to it's problem of falling and being unable to get back could be remedied by adding some low tech self righting mechanisms...
    Basically just something that can push it upright enough to get it's legs under it.
    Probably would have to give it a trade-off of less torso armor and slightly reduced ammo capacity.

      Thanks for tuning in! All I can think about now, is the srimech from robot wars. Yeoman gets knocked over and all a sudden an arm flips out of its back, a jet of gas and its back up on its feet.

    Do those two massive missile launchers actually accomplish their job while costing less than an Archer?

  • @dewbert45
    @dewbert45 7 месяцев назад +8

    Okay, I get the hate, but I love this mech. On the table, it performs better when more units are on the table. Plop it behind a few assaults with a light hunter for protection. Also, it may not be fast, but it is twice the speed of the "upgraded" LRM carriers of its ERA (which are it closest counterparts).

    • @battletopia
      @battletopia  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks for listening. No hate on this 'mech its just hard on the eyes, and yet I still love (ish) it. It was built for a purpose and it does it will. LRM carriers are fragile at the best of time

  • @jamesripley8031
    @jamesripley8031 7 месяцев назад +5

    I don’t often agree with the picks for bad mech series, but I agree in this case. I think the yeoman would have been good in the late succession wars when the only things fast enough to exploit its huge min range were also weak enough to not be huge threats. But by 3060 you have to consider that every scout and striker on the battlefield can go from long range to minimum range in 1 turn, and carries enough payload to be very problematic to a yeoman.
    The good news is that in alpha strike its weaknesses are mostly covered up and it is a solid indirect support mech, or even a manageable line of battle mech.

    • @battletopia
      @battletopia  7 месяцев назад

      Thank James! Boom, in with the kill and then save at the last second. This is what I am finding about switching between the two systems. One mech is terrible in one but great in another. I take 'mechs in alpha strike I would never even dream of in classic (looking at you Thorn!)

    • @jamesripley8031
      @jamesripley8031 7 месяцев назад

      @@battletopia The translation to Alpha Strike is generally generous to "lots of little hit" mechs and takes something away from "one big hit" mechs. The Hunchback 4G and the Quickdraw 4G both do 3 damage at medium range, for example, and they are FAR from the same sort of offense in Classic. Fortunately PV is calculated based on Alpha Strike numbers, so you get a price bump/discount depending on how that all went and it all seems to be costed fairly well

    The Yeoman is fine. The short story (while amusing) can dump on it, but in a proper FWL combined arms force the Yeoman works. It has plenty of battle armor that can bodyguard it (Phalanx, Kopis, etc.), so its modest armor isn't too big a problem. In return, it is mobile enough for a platform that can throw out this many LRMs.
    It is not a "bad mech". It is a mech with some shortcomings, but it is perfectly playable.

    The Yeoman is a Poor Man's Longbow. Missile Boats are common, though commonly they carry only 1 or 2 tons of ammunition. I know of the fast 60ton Bombardier that has 40 long range missile tubes, and only 2 tons of ammunition between them.
    If it was 75tons with more ammunition and armor, then it could fair well. At its a 60ton cut-costing measure its just okay. If it was even 65tons with a couple Medium lasers, that would be a substantial upgrade.
    Its also just ugly. Theres no real reason to not have battlemechs with swiveling torsos. Having weapons mounted in the arms is a good idea, but not replacing the entire assembly.
    If you wanted to, just get an Archer and strip it down to have more launchers.

    I actually wish the Yeoman was in MWO. I mean filled with MRMs it would be fun and if LRMs were viable in the game it would be good for faction play. But it would be such a funny mech for them to introduce it'd be great.

    the proliferation of fire support units leading up to the Fall of the Star League saw some actually decent designs. sadly, a lot of late SL mechs are mediocre at bast.
    or outright laughable
    everyone can laugh all they want at an Urbanmech, until they face one in it's home environment! then the laughing stops!
    the Yeoman is one of those designs that looks great on paper or viewscreen
    but the design's flaws are manifest to a glaring level where effectiveness matters, on the battlefield!
    the broad stance gives good stability, but the lack of operable arms means the mech cannot get back up if it does get knocked over.
    the use of reverse knee or gets the Stalker back up and running in short order and the Stalker also lacks operable Arms.
    no defensive armaments is just bad design as any Ammunition based weapon platform will at some point have to deal with running out of bullets.
    I have a design using available Clan Tech to produce a fire support unit that means business and is much more effective in general even though it's heavier.
    4x Clan Tech LRM 20 racks and a pair of 10 racks is effectively 2 Yeoman's on one chassis. only mine has proper arms.
    not as fast as the Yeoman at 3/5 but most Assault Mechs are in this speed range while supporting units are faster.
    a 300 XL engine and double HS's also means a quartet of clan ER small lasers is on hand for close in work.
    CASE covers all ammo bins and for added vehicle safety, ammunition is carried in the arms meaning an Ammo Explosion won't utterly cripple the machine.
    the use of Endosteel also saves tonnage needed elsewhere while providing ample space for good armor quantity and ammunition capacity.
    the reverse knee lower chassis is dirived from the Timberwolf meaning this mech will rise quickly if it gets knocked down. and getting in it's face is regarded as a VERY BAD idea.
