There is a Japanese term: Mono no aware. It means basically, the sad beauty of seeing time pass - the aching awareness of impermanence. These are the days that we will return to one day in the future only in memories.

    Lyrics...
I made my home in a ten-ton bomb
And I was so happy with 28 years of free fallin’
But now it’s all guts and I’m bawlin'
She was born in a tenement walk-up
With shit for nerves, you know she never learned to talk to adults
She said ‘everything's easier in here’
Like the dancer with bruises who gathers the cash
When the music is through, no she don’t look back
I’ve come to look for America too
All I ever wanted was a spot in the mountains
With an a-frame cabin and nobody counting our days
Or cursing or praising our name
But the best we could do is to enter the void
Like a wide-eyed child waking up to the noise of East Harlem
Don’t they see that we’re starving?
Like the dancer with bruises who gathers the cash
When the music is through no she don’t look back
I’ve come to look for America too
And we stole the car on the 4th of July
I pawned my guitar and we drove through the night
I’ve come to look for America too
...and of course, thank you guys for the music.

This cover art bears a close resemblance to a shopping mall my mother used to take me to on the weekends during the early 90's. It had tons of natural light streaming in from glass ceilings, similar coloring and styling to this image, palm trees and plants, and actually had a pizza place (Sbarro) right next to the arcade, which also had those warped glass panels very similar to the ones shown here. Even my younger brother said the same thing when I showed him the artwork. In later years, the mall began an irreversible decline until it was little more than a ghost town with a handful of shops. They finally closed it late last year. It was one of those emblems of a simpler time that I sometimes wish I could return to.
Looking at this image after having long since lost count of the times I've listened to this album, it just reminds me of the ways I relate to the themes in Kids, and makes me want to go look for my own America 2... knowing we'll never recapture what we've lost. Still, I'm thankful for all those memories from a simpler time, some of which include pizza by the arcade. Thanks The Midnight for creating a way for us to step back in time, if only for a few minutes at a time.

Great story man, really touching indeed. There was a simpler time during the 80s and 90s, I would never trade my childhood during that timeframe for nothing and like you, I wish I could return to it again, even for a little while. That is why The Midnight is such a great band, it connects on a personal level and transports you to another time, where the nostalgia hits hard.

  • @imageneer

One of the best songs by The Midnight. it fascinates me the huge amount of comments about the "uplifting" values of the song, where it's clearly a very sad song about a bright past that perhaps was just a mirage and never existed and the sad reality we live in... it's called "America 2" in reference to Simon & Garfunkel's "America" song, but it could truly be called "World 2", it's a universal theme across every country on Earth these days. Within that sad context it's immensely beautiful, and the stark contrast between the deeply sad lyrics and the synthwave beats and production elevates its message even higher. The 80s was truly the apex of happy Earth vs. today's bleak and consumed Earth. A masterpiece. But not really the blissful upbeat song many happen to see here. Reflect on the lyrics, thrive for a better world for all.

    • @SpicePrincess1890
      @SpicePrincess1890 Год назад +5

Agreed. It's about the illusion of the "American dream" and how living and "making it" in America isn't the end of all your problems. Because that dream isn't really attainable by those who want it most. And while the sound is dancey and fun, the lyrics carry the weight.

The artwork and the amazing lyrics of America 2 by The Midnight are the emblem of melancholy for having lost something we loved and hoping we can have it back sooner or later.

    • @earthboundkid1
      @earthboundkid1 6 лет назад +30

Pile333@ It is not a sad song about loss if you ask me. It is a love story about a young couple who both grow up in rough circumstances, but especially the girl who is more than likely a stripper maybe? I am not sure what Tyler Lyle means by " like the dancer with bruises who gathers the cash". All I know is she has made her mind to get out of her situation and to chase after the american dream and the ideal of freedom with her boyfriend. So they steal one of there parents car's on independence day and the boyfriend sells off his guitar for gas money to drive as far way from the bad old life and past as possible all through the night. Chasing those ideas of the American dream and freedom. Its about a young couple running away for the bad past the only thing they have is their love and the hope of a better future.

I think its both really. It's happy for the reasons you've stated. But also a melancholic, looking back at the happy times, with the sort of sad fondness for things that are no longer around or things that you have experienced.
Both the music and lyrics have a positivity for the future, with tinge of melancholy of what could have happened or what is to happen. To me anyway.

Listening to this magnificent music, while staring at the picture, I can only imagine what kinds of stories and events happened around this now abandoned mall, back in the time when it was the hotspot around the town, like that PizzaZone shop next to the entrance. The sign says "Permanently Closed", and there's a few tables left outside, like mute witnesses of the glorious past this place had. Maybe lots of happy hours right after school happened there, friends got together and had happy chats about this cool new cartoon, or that terrific pair of sneakers from Nike, or how that new Ghostbusters movie was awesome to watch in the big screen. Maybe young couples went there to celebrate their teenage love with some slices o' pepperoni and Coca-Cola. I can imagine many of the customers hit the arcade next to it, to play some Asteroids, Galaga, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Tron, and other kick-ass games... no worries about anything, because the future obviously was going to be bright and shiny, the good things of those days were going to be kept, after all, right? You just don't throw good things away like that, you keep them, learn to replicate them, right? Therefore, why care about a thing? That place was once the representative of our carefree times, long after the World Wars, and long before our modern crises. The '60s all the way up to the early '00s were like this: carefree, bright and blissful.
How I long for a future like my past.

It sounds like they're going back to the Endless Summer kind of feeling when you listen to their songs. Nocturnal was nice, but I just can't listen to it when it's bright outside, it's a stricte night-time album. Perfect for driving around downtown at night when it's raining.

I think if these are tracks for the new album, they feel more like Days of Thunder, but with that more positive, nostalgic vibe of Endless Summer. While Endless Summer felt like something you'd drive past sunny beaches to, Nocturnal was like its dark counterpart, shared musical themes, but at night... Nocturnal is my favourite album of theirs so far though. Endless Summer comes a close second.

80s eternos.

Everyone is hooked and 4 of us are coming to Manchester 26th July. Tyler you and Tim have created something that is truely special, you guys are motivating and building people up who may or may not feel good about themselves, you guys are abosulte positivity to the core. Tyler you are an absolute lyrical genious and singer to match (how are you not breaking into the UK charts) Tim we need to have a drink together, your production is flawless and the arrangment is superb, I only wish i could get my compositions as good as yours. Anyway guys if you see a banner at manchster 26th July please invite us up on stage because we will gladly duet with one of your songs. we live the midnight...................love you guys.

My parents song is "America" by Simon and Garfunkel "we've all gone to look for America" but it makes me sad and sentimental to hear it now. This song, on the other hand, is a subtle shout out to nostalgia that fills me with PURE JOY.

Loved the song and the Springsteen vibe.
It starts with them trapped in the badlands, waisting away.
While on the backstreets of jungleland, the bruised dancers collect the cash and dance to the record the dj plays.
They have romantic dreams about living in a cabin, on a mountain, beneath peaceful skies.
Finally on 4th of July they steal a car and head down thunder road. Driving all night in search of the land of hope and dreams.
Breaking out and chasing the promised land. Like many Springsteen characthers before.
Let's hope they all make it through the darkness on the edge of town and that the night will get them what they want.

Just how our grand parents looked towards America as a place paved with gold roads and a escape from the reality they knew looking for a better future they moved their families there.
But over time the once Paradise is what we have today, the narrator looking for the new paradise to escape to and build a better life in a better place with the person he loves.
I related deeply with this, I've been with this same beautiful girl for 10 years all during that time we've been saving money and learning new languages as we plan our escape from here to a better place.
Thank you for the beautiful song every time I hear it I always reign in the moment to remember our future plans
