There's something otherworldly in Donald Fagen's voice - it's like a unique musical instrument, all of it's own. And the music of Steely Dan has a depth and beauty, unequalled I think, in the entire pop/rock pantheon.
The lead guitarist, Jeffrey Allen "Skunk" Baxter is known for his stints in the rock bands Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers during the 1970s and Spirit in the 1980s. More recently, he has worked as a defense consultant and chaired a Congressional Advisory Board on missile defense. How about that.
Fagen is such a card, I remember hearing an interview he did on NPR in the 90's, probably 'Fresh Air' with Terry Gross, I don't remember, when they were discussing his (then) new album, 'Kamakiriad' and one cut in particular that had the lyrics 'She's a virus wearing pumps and pearls'.. the interviewer, who was a woman, asked Fagen .. 'those are some pretty misogynistic lyrics, don't you think?..' and without missing a beat, Fagen answered,.. 'Hey man, if you don't like it.. make your own album..' I almost had to pull over, I was laughing so hard.
"They met while both were at Bard College..." Yeah, it's in Annandale. You could probably take a Wolverine Train up there. But he's never going back to his old school.
This is the track I use to set up my sound system. So much dynamic range. Unbelievable studio work and the players...well you know. Jamel, get it done brother.
I am so glad that you did this song! I remember laying in bed at night with my tiny transistor radio (AM only) at the age of around twelve years old and hearing this song. It really made an impression on me.

Steely Dan had so many powerhouse musicians working in the studio. It seems like no matter who the drummer, lead guitar or piano/organ performer it seemed to magically meld together.
Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, Dire Straits, Creedence Clearwater Revival and after that John Fogerty solo. Only a couple years' worth of reactions there!
You have to check out “Song For My Father” by jazz great Horace Silver, which “Rikki” directly references-the Dan were massively jazz-influenced, and it shows.
I don’t think that’s true-either that they sampled it (you can tell that by just listening to the two songs, or the fact that sampling wasn’t “a thing” in 1974), or that they claimed to. Happy to be proven wrong, though.
@@bobrouse8634 Sampling wasn't really around when this song was recorded. That, and they had access to the best studio musicians. That bass line is great, but so easy to replicate. Donald Fagan was quoted “There was never a conscious thought about picking up Horace Silver’s intro."
Whether Donald Fagan said there was no conscious thought about picking up Horace Silver's intro or not, it's absolutely what was done. The intros are exactly the same. This needn't take away from the Steely Dan song - it's one of my favorites - as artists have borrowed from each other, like, forever.

Several months later the 45-single peaked at #4 on the Billboard Charts, their highest-charting single ever. Take note that the Central Park vendor on the "Pretzel Logic" album cover spelled pretzels wrong on the top sign, but correctly on the sign below.
Several years ago while driving and listening to kJazz, this catchy mid 60's tune came on called "Song for My Father" by Horace Silver Quintet. I recognized the beginning piano intro...thinking out loud..ahhh this is where Becker & Fagen got that piano hook for "Rikki don't Lose that Number". Jackie Blue was the song I loved from them.
So happy you are a Dan Fan. Way to be buddy. No better way to love this period's music. Genius.
12th grade High School, Graduation closing in, Didn't want to say ''Goodbye'' to Class of 1974., Sooo many memories.
Please check out “Sign in Stranger” by Steely Dan. Some tasty piano on that one!
Please react to "Harvest for the World", by The Isley Brothers, cheers.
I second that!🎶❤
Omg Yes Maaaan
Yes, the whole album!!
Yes! I've been asking for a long time.
This band has so many good songs. Did you know that Chevy Chase was in a band with these guys in high school? He was the drummer. He went off to be an actor and they started Steely Dan.
aseainfo Everything gets better when Chevy leaves. SNL, Steely Dan ....
@@dunismith3045 Yes but then came Clark W Griswold and all was redeemed.
Steely Dan has never been my favorite but they are a good band, and have worthy listening material.
React to “Bennie & The Jets” by Elton John - one of the greatest soul songs of all time!
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Love to see jamels reaction to rockin’ Elton,”The Bitch Is Back” or “Saturday night’s Alright For Fighting”.
Peter Paul and Mary ...... Puff the Magic Dragon
I still get as excited to hear this song as I was back in the seventies when I heard it on the radio.
Love everything Steely Dan. Piano and chimes so pretty, guitar so clear, signature Baxter. Fond memories of playing "Josie" on tenor sax in jazz band sophomore year. Has that song been 'discovered' yet?
Man, you could just do the whole album. It's a killer. I especially like Charlie Freak and Any Major Dude.
*Miracles - Jefferson Airplane* _long version only_ - The real world awaits.
We've requested this til our fingers bled from typing. Nothing. 😔
@@CamiMack5616 - I think we're close. Keep typing.
i hear this and i'm transported to startling 1st grade... so wonderful.
Watching from the UK, I have really enjoyed you finding and reacting to many of the songs/albums/bands/artists that I have bought and seen live over the past 50+ years. Steely Dan have been in my top 10 bands of all time from 1973. Top of the list being Led Zeppelin. Thanks Jamel.
