LOVE this one! There's a great story behind it...
In short, Donald Fagen befriended Rikki, the wife of one of his professors at Bard College. She was a writer who had grown up on the college’s campus and graduated from the university with a B.A. in Fine Arts a year before Fagen had enrolled there. The two found themselves at the same party, and despite Fagen’s knowledge that she was married - and the fact she was pregnant at the time - he gave Rikki his number.
    She never called...

edit- Jeff Baxter (pre-Doobie Brothers) on electric guitar!! That's Jeff wearing the beret.
Its Rikki Ducornet. Ducornet said they met at a college party, and even though she was both pregnant and married at the time, he gave her his number, although not in the same context as the song. Ducornet was intrigued by Fagen and tempted to call him, but she decided against it.

omg my most favourite steely dan song. i know it's considered their most commercial hit but i absolutely love how silky smooth and melodic this song is!
rikki is an actual woman whom songwriter donald fagen met at a party and was smitten. she was married and pregnant at the time so i love how it has a forlorn but yearning feel ❤
the intro is also an homage to the jazz classic "song for my father" by horace silver.
p.s. the "number" y'all are wondering about is donald's phone number, which he gave her in the hope she'd call. she did not.

To me, Steely Dan created perfect records. The writing, the arrangement, the execution, the layering, the production--all perfect. Think about when you sit down to write something or draw something or cook something. How many times do you say "that was exactly what I was trying to do?" With Steely Dan, they just "nailed it." Aja is a perfect example of a perfect album.

You two really play well off of each other and it's a lot of fun for us to watch. Keep it up. It's a great show. Deacon Blues and Black Cow. I'll patiently wait because there are a hundred other SD songs you could play as well. Cheers!

I could reel off 2 dozen Steely Dan songs you need to hear. Kid Charlemagne is an absolute must, but I suggest saving it until later. My first pick would be "My Old School". it is one of their earlier songs, but so much fun with a rockin' tempo, great guitar licks, and awesome horn parts. But whatever you choose you can't go wrong with the Dan! Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to this one. Have a great weekend, RSR Fam!

My favorite Steely Dan song (among many awesome songs of theirs). I was 14 when this came out, and it so reminds me of a great summer at the South Jersey Shore. Their music is so atmospheric, and this song always puts me in the best, most nostalgic mood. It's the same with Do It Again and My Old School ... all have such different sounds and create totally different moods, but they all bring me such joy.

The "Bum Bum, Bum Bum" is lifted directly from Jazz pianist Horace Silver's song "Song for my Father".
Rookie Don't Lose That Number, along with Josie and Time Out of Mind are my favorite hits, though all their bits are excellent.
Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, ELO and Deep Purple were my favorite FM rock bands from the 1970s. I'll give Dave Edmunds an honorable mention. But, then Lynyrd Skynyrd comes to mind as well. What a decade!

  • @TZ61

They lifted the piano part from Horace Silver's "Song for my Father" and created their own story around that. The following song on Pretzel Logic is "Night by Night" which would be a perfect follow up to this one. All in all, this is a fairly offbeat album (even for Steely Dan) but one of my favorites along with Can't Buy a Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy, and The Royal Scam. Thanks for the upload.

A flawless discography. You just can't lose with the Dan. 🎵🎶 [edit] 7:50 Amber is right on the money here. SO much of the beauty of Steely Dan was in the "clever use of simplicity", of knowing when NOT to clutter things up. Simply flawless. RIP Mr Becker, you were part of something truly special. ☮

The best thing is that you have been exposed to Steely Dan at a fairly young age, so you'll have many years to enjoy them. They are a band that you always come back to and never change the channel when they come on.

Yes, some jazz-rock from Steely Dan! This was the biggest song chart wise landing at #4 in '74. Want to hear some whiskey drinking music checkout Deacon Blues next. Thanks. 😎

The key board player is half the band. And the lead singer. Started as rock and became the pinnacle of jazz rock fusion. Best and most carefully produced records of all time.

I'm a huge Steely Dan fan. It was so amazing growing up in the 70s and 80s and hearing awesome music like this on the radio. Great reaction Jay and Amber ❤❤❤❤❤

That song was a very special song for me, that summer I went on a long trip across country back to Michigan from Arizona with my parents, driving on my learner permit, spent a lot of time riding motorcycles and going to our family cabin at the lake. When I returned to Arizona, I finally fulfilled my lifelong dream of soloing in an airplane on my 16th birthday. Thanks for the memories, by the way, you probably don't even want to know where Steely dan got their name. 🤪

My bestie in 9th and 10th grade and I both had a crush on a boy named Ricky. Every time I hear this song I think of them. Sadly, both passed away from drugs. But the song still brings back memories of those special years before responsibilities and early adulthood.

Have always felt this song has such a unique feel. Atypical for 'pop music' (it was a big hit that I remember from my childhood). So much soul, and lyrical depth. Love it.

Another excellent reaction! The Dan are my favorite band because they check all the boxes: when I want to jam, when I want to chill, when I want to think, when I don't want to think, there's a Steely song to fit the need... They're raw and rough, but also smooth and highly technical... A couple of suggestions... Don't Take Me Alive rocks hard... Aja and Home At Last are as good as smooth jazz gets... Haitian Divorce and Caves of Altamira also show off these guys' (and the studio musicians') talent! There are very few meh songs in the entire Steely catalog, and almost all are end to end phenomenal! The pianist (and writer/composer) is Donald Fagen... You guys give me so much hope for the future of music! Keep up the great work!

The song is supposedly about Rick Derringer.. In one of his acceptance speeches at am award show Prince thanked for the 3 that influenced himself as they dared to be different like he was.. Hendrix.. Santana. And Steely Dan😊😊

I agree with you, you can’t put Steely Dan in a box/category, but my husband has a big playlist of 70’s/80’s songs and when one comes on from them I can tell it is them right away because they are so unique. Thanks for reacting to them guys, so glad you enjoyed it!❤❤

I was a HS Senior in 1973...then college. The music of "our" times is still the best though I spent the 80's in the clubs! The songs on the radio then are still hits! This was played very heavily & who can't sing along?!
