    The “peaceful look” seems to me to be a steady gaze without a hard edge to it. No aggression, no ‘come hither’. A softened, steady gaze; possibly more into the distance than on the immediate surroundings.

    She has very subtle facial expressions all the time.

      I'm torn between bursting the positive bubble here, but a factor may be that 90% of the INFJs on the Internet are mistyped. The descriptions are so overblown that they literally attract every type, as well as the statistical rarity of INFJs, and INXJs as a whole. Dominant Ni is just a function, it doesn't at all make for an interesting person, and that goes for intuitive bias as a whole.

    • @Nerdy-By-Nature

      Statistically speaking, it's more likely to find an INFJ on a video like this because of our near obsessive need for self exploration, discovery, and growth. It's hardly a random sampling pool. This kind of video will attract certain people. But yes it is true, there are a number of people who have mistyped themselves, MBTI, Kibbe, DYT, e. And that's okay 🤷 they'll discover themselves when they're ready.

    Love that you mentioned INFJs as potentially looking more ethereal. I'm an INFJ and I've been told I have ethereal essence, and I think a large part of it is the zoned out peaceful look (I'm also an enneagram 9, so peaceful and zoned out is my natural state haha). If you know about the cognitive functions in MBTI, it's the signature "Ni stare", which comes with inferior Se. Ni stare means you aren't really focused on anything happening in the moment, and are probably more inside of your own head than anything else. INTJs have dominant Ni too, but are much more aware of their surroundings and have a much more cold and calculating stare because of their aux Te. INFJs have aux Fe, which causes them to appear much less harsh and lets their Ni shine through more. Pretty much every INFJ I know has this peaceful look to an extent. I think that's a part of why INFJs are stereotyped as otherworldly and sage-like.

    I think having a more muted colouring definitely lends itself to appearing ethereal as well. Looking sort of "faded", it gives the impression that someone isn't fully present on this plane, maybe? I think that a lot of the photos you picked out were quite washed out or blue or grey-toned, which adds to the muted look of the ladies, so they seem more ethereal than we usually consider them. Pale, watery eyes is a trait I really associate with ethereal essence, like Frances Conroy, who I think of as quintessentially ethereal. (In fact, there's a cat in my neighbourhood who I consider quite ethereal - he's white with very muted ginger patches and very pale green eyes... I call him Frances Conroy!) I also think it's not a good idea to try to "force" appearing ethereal especially if you don't have a low contrast colouring, since lighting can make you seem greyed or blued-out in photos, but in real life you can't count on that! Nice work, thanks Merriam :)

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  5 лет назад +15

      Completely agreed about the muted coloring. Also this is why I stress so much always dressing in your own lines first and foremost, and then you don't have to worry about anything looking forced or not right. Otherwise, it can get 'risky' so to speak if you miss the mark for whatever reason.

Hundreds of different, unconnected people have called me ethereal before so I don't think it's me being biased because I love ethereal essence. I also have quite elven features which contributes, extremely pale skin and very light blue/grey eyes. But now I think about it a lot of it probably comes down to my mannerisms. People say i'm very still and 'poised' and i'm a daydreamer so i'm often stating off into the distance. This idea of essences doesn't seem very measurable and is confusing and vague to me. I don't know how to use it or recognize it really. Is that what we're exploring? How to define what translates as a style or look? And how to say I want to be perceived this or that way and this is how I can acheive it? But some styles or essences are built into peoples physicality? This is so confusing to me. Can we decide what seems to translate into each look and make a chart or something? Lol :)

      Just wait until Merriam decides to explain the differences in perfume, lol. There's an enigma. About your first sentence. What if you try to imagine the vibe that people and things give off. I think a kind of French iron balcony railing and a mushroom give off different vibes. So, maybe it all boils down to what is the vibe you want to feel and send out to the world? Just add a touch of that quality to your personality. This is my guess on your question. I don't think this is really a measurable topic, this topic lives in the subliminal look/communication and in the feelings it makes in you and that then radiate out into others. Related: All the best liars actually in that moment accept an alternate mode where they believe their own lies. Hope that's not too much information..

    I definitely believe some “ethereal” qualities are dependent on personality. For me, a person comes across as “ethereal” when they posses an effortlessly airy form of strongly feminine poise. It’s different from the more structurally refined, and almost institutional poise of a well-developed classic beauty. Classically feminine poise almost looks developed, garnered, and mastered. It’s from the outside, reflected inwardly. Ethereal poise, on the other hand, looks like it esoterically radiates outward from within one’s core of being. They both give off an air of feminine intelligence . One is a more structured, erudite, and overtly diplomatic form of personal elegance. The other is a boundless, fruitfully resonant, and arcanely diplomatic form of elegance.

And when I look at old photos of myself I always think something like 'I did look like I was not from this world', I still have that appearance when I wear no makeup because my lashes and eyebrows are pretty sparse and appear almost seethrough. I guess that's why I can still wear really light hair colors without looking too far off my coloring (even though my natural hair color now is more of a dark blonde). Whenever I don't wear makeup, people are confused about how different I look. I like that kind of 'seethrough' look tbh, but I like wearing makeup and can't fully stay away from it.

    Essence is so tough because I have zero idea how I "read" to other people. Body typing is easier because I have objectively shorter bones than So & So. Also, is "comedic essence" a thing? Because some faces are just... witty and funny, even in repose.

    • @unneighborlyarcades6356
      @unneighborlyarcades6356 5 лет назад +18

      I'm unbelievably happy that someone else noticed this! From my somewhat obsessive analysis, I've decided that these "funny faces" can be described as "expressive". But, there is more to it. They are "exaggeratedly expressive". Of course people we refer to as "rubber faces" would seem to have funny faces because they are so exaggeratedly expressive when in motion. But what makes them seem so, even at rest? Faces are essential for communication in any genre, but they are absolutely crucial in comedy. Just think of "I Love Lucy" without Lucille Ball's iconic facial expressions. Think of why clowns paint their faces to exaggerate the mouth and eyes. Part of the comedy of children's cartoons-anime especially-is the facial expressions, for goodness sake. Comedy needs facial features that really communicate emotions. I think an openness of the face is what is behind this exaggerated expressiveness. I don't really know how to describe "openness" other than by saying the entire face is taken up by the facial features. This is not necessarily to do with the size of the features themselves, but with the spacing of the features. There's more to it than that because not everyone with an open face reads as funny. This comment is long enough as it is though.
      TL;DR: Yes, there is such a thing as "comedic essence" and you are a genius for thinking of the name.

      @@unneighborlyarcades6356 I really enjoyed your reply! Rubber faces, yes, like Bill Hader; or even just that open expressiveness like Elaine from Seinfeld. Though of course I can think of a few comedians who don't have that but still have their moments; Will Ferrell, Carrie Brownstein. There's also some element of "sharp wit" to the face, and if I really think about it, it's a lack of eagerness to please, weird as that is. Some element that conveys... like a low-key pervasive disgruntlement. It's kind of messed up that that reads as "smarter" to me than a more eager, accepting countenance. Like April Ludgate from Parks & Recreation versus Jess from New Girl (even though I find Zooey D.'s comedy smarter overall). Or Jordan Peele versus Keegan-Michael Key. Both funny, but Jordan Peele has "that face" while Key exaggerates his actions.

      @@cianap.281 I'm not particularly a fan of Will Ferrell's films (not my cup of tea), but he certainly reads as funny, in my opinion. I think I would have a hard time believing him as the lead in a serious drama, but I wonder if that is more to do with his voice and my own associations with him as a comedic actor. I wonder if it is also to do with the expression your face is in at rest? Some people have "resting bitch face", some have "resting sad face", and so on. Will Ferrell is a good example of a person with an "open" face, despite having quite small eyes and narrow lips. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Bill Hader are such good examples!
      I agree with you completely on the "sharp wit" face. I call that the "straight-man face". I think Harvey Korman is a great example as well. And again, we can see this "sharp wit" face in cartoons. I love using cartoons as an example because faces are drawn deliberately to give the viewer an idea of the character's attitude. Hello Merriam! Do you have some insight about aging and kibbe types? I'm soft gamine, but I feel like the older I get, the more I loose my essence (mostly because of aging skin) and because gamines are supposed to look young and dynamic, aging becomes an "obstacle" to me, and wearing clothes of my type makes me feel like I'm trying too much to look younger. It's like there is too much contrast between my body and my style. Do you have any solutions regarding this issue? Does aging actually influence our Kibbe type? Thank you so much for your amazing content

Being gamine is a challenge because of this mix of opposites :) Thanks a lot for your great advice!

      I too would love to see content on dressing your Kibbe type over 50/60 etc. I'm 56 and still trying to pin down my exact type although most people guess me 10 years younger. I've looked at all the soft as the only yang I see is my long spidery hand and can't decide about my jawline or shoulders. Next to my athletic daughter who has powerful shoulders, fairly narrow hips and only slight waist compared to when I was her size I'm all rounded. I've gained a couple of sizes because of health but Romantic lines seem to fit best as I still have all curves with my waist definition while most my friends have lost theirs. It's not just typing though. Like commenter above it's how to translate things to an older body.

    • @user-qp6lj6gu7s
      @user-qp6lj6gu7s 5 лет назад

      @@Flippinger I think it depends on your type and where you gain flesh or lose it. If your face is primarily Classic and doesn't change too much but you gain some additional softness on your body that could explain it for you. If you are a Gamine or Natural you might instead lose some softness on your face but you keep your mixed or blunt bones making you closer to the flamboyant or neutral version of that type. I think this is why Cameron Diaz is mistyped because she keeps her body fat at such a low level that she looks more Flamboyant (dramatic).

  • @dmn4747
    @dmn4747 3 года назад

    I think, but am not sure I am somewhat of a dramatic ethereal...which sounds at odds...but I read once that this was described as 'otherworldly art curator' and that just fits lol. I also read it described once as just Persephone. Dark and deep colors, sometimes high contrast between skin and hair...less of an angelic presence and possibly more of a priestess or witchy vibe. I'd also say that is ethereal. To me ethereal is otherworldly....and that other world can be lots of places. Another thing I've noticed about people who are described as having an ethereal quality (Vera Farmiga also comes to mind) is that you can't place their face and body in a time period. Lots of people look like they're from the 50's! or the 70's! or the romantic era! But ethereal people often have a sort of timeless almost moving through time immortal look to them. They'd look as natural in Roman garb as they would dressed for 1975.

    INFJ and a classic body type. I don't think I look ethereal at all, despite a peaceful demeanor and those around me saying they feel at ease and calm around me. I don't think it's completely about personality (although it definitely plays a part) but about taping into and fullfilling unconscious mythology and archetype.
    Most have ideas of what reads as angelic and otherworldly, elven or whatever. That is built around the cultural idea of what those types look like based on a historical image. You can only go so far with your style. It may look natural to you or not based on your body, face, personality, style, and lines. Thinner limbs, longer necks, smaller heads, sharp chins, wide almond eyes, delicate features, soft and flowing hair, low contrast (sometimes) tend to read as more ethereal. How you move, as well. Not always all of those qualities together but enough of those elements.
    I can play with that style but it doesn't really look like me even in my lines. And I have studied many pictures of myself to see this. I do better with a boyish, tailored look, no matter my expression or personality.

    I think ingenue to ethereal is spectrum, and very few women are ingenue looking from their teens to their 50s or older, and very few women are ethereal looking from the age of 13-14 or even 9-10. however most women if you compare a picture/video of her at 14-15 to when shes 35 or 45( provided she aged really gracefully, really well maintained and dresses flattering herself at that age), the young version will seem very ingenue next to the older version and the older version will seem very ethereal compared to the younger person. Bcoz as we get older our faces lose baby fat so they get get thinner (which makes them seem longer, less cute) , flatter (less juicy, full cheekbones) and our faces grow a little after our teens so the change in proportion makes our eyes smaller. everyone starts out extremely neotenous (baby's, 5 yr olds) and moves toward the ethereal end of the spectrum , especially once they reach old age (if they look beautiful for their age) they look extremely ethereal. My mind is also making the connection of being full of passion and restlessness when your your younger and becoming more calm and peaceful as you get older (of course their are exceptions like Helena Bonham Carter who even at 53 looks very ingenue). I think we all should enjoy the ingenue look in our teens and 20s (however long it lasts for each person) and prepare to carry the ethereal look someday (most likely).

I think this subjectivity can be fun, so long as we realize it's subjectivity and not objectivity!

      I have seen the other videos (I watch all of your videos!), I like the examples used but I think this video is better for me personally when it comes to clarifying what it actually is about. A system that doesn't work all the time is automatically rejected by my Ti (seasons for example) so having an explanation as to why it doesn't work every time allows me to accept it somewhat, even if it means seeing it as a art/clothing/photography-style where some people have an easier time looking a certain way or giving off a certain vibe under the right conditions.

    Can you have an ingenue and ethereal essesnce at the same time? Maybe like a cute elf or something.

      Yes. Any Kibbe type can have an ethereal essence. Ethereal gamine and ethereal ingenue tend to have a sweet, angelic look, or could be impish, mischievous. Ethereal Dramatic would be majestic like Cate Blanchett or Tilda Swinton. There's more than one ethereal look; don't let anyone tell you differently. Even angels have different roles - they can be governors, or guardians, or cherubic, etc. and each role has different characteristics. For example, an angelic ingenue might look good in a white lace babydoll dress, but it would be all wrong on Tilda Swinton! The ethereal essence can also be elvish or alien, which lends many more possible aspects to the ethereal essence.

    Not every woman has an ethereal look. Its really all about your features and statuette. While the look can be manipulated with proper makeup,lighting, and color I find that when women are made up to look ethereal they look like they are playing dress up as compared to a woman with real ethereal essence. Ethereal women are usually thin and tall, flowy airy fabrics that are draped on this body type looks goddess like.

      Agreed. Ethereal has an elongated S shape, long and thin but without the sharp edges of a dramatic. It's definitely not just a vibe

      There is more than one ethereal look. For example, angelic gamine, which is a young, sweet look, or could be impish. You're thinking of Galadriel, aka Cate Blanchett, but that's just one ethereal look.
