Jack Arnold has to have been one of the strongest/wisest tv dads of All time. If you look at his wiki it shows that he was a Captain in the U.S.A Marines that fought in the Vietnam war. I salute you Mr. Daniel Joseph Lauria for your services. God Bless America 🇺🇸
David Schwimmer was a great actor back then, as were all the cast of "Friends", as you can see when you see snippets of their earlier acting jobs before "Friends!
Haha coolest dad ever. "Work's work." One time Kevin asked him about his job like what do you do dad? "I wake up at 5 o' clock in the morning each day, I fight traffic, I bust my ass all day, I fight traffic again, and I come home.. Then, I pay my taxes."
A lot of the comments in here don’t really get the scope of this episode. It’s not really about “daddy’s little girl being taken away.” It’s about how different moral standards were back then compared to today.... back then living together before marriage was seen as this horribly immoral thing that just wasn’t ever done. Karen’s attitude represented how the baby boomers rebelled against those traditions and Jack represented the WWII generation that clung hard to tradition and didn’t understand any other point of view. Notice how Jack only decides to accept Michael after they decide to officially marry.
This is also seen in the episode where Jack screams at Norma "THIS HOUSE NEEDS PEPSI!" People think its funny but dont understand the scope of the scene. When we says "this house needs pepsi" hes not talking about actual Pepsi. This was a time when gender roles were set in stone so hes really saying "this house need you to be a good housewife" because Norma was taking pottery lessons at the time.
Olivia's Father was in Manfred Mann whose probably known for their Hit Do Wah Diddy. It was "originally" done by The Exciters who had the Hit "Tell Him". I had no idea that Olivia was British. She did an amazing US Accent. In England there's a School called Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts and I think they do dialect lessons. Robert Reed (Mike Brady The Brady Bunch) Tamara Braun (Days Of Our Lives & All My Children) and Ray McConnell (All My Children) also studied there.
He should have gone and paid in advance. I've done that before, but I always snuck to the front and left my card with them so they just run it when the check came.

i only watch friends because of ross, because i was such a fan from him when he was in wonder years.....friends and wonder years are my 2 favourite series of all time
You're absolutely right, Karen. Your dad IS stubborn and pig-headed, especially since he had to drag Kevin along to help renovate the house when he could see full well that Michael was a carpenter and could save them an entire bunch of work. Not everyone has to be a builder to be helpful. I'm sure that Wayne was pleased to not have to be dragged along to help out as well.
It’s not really about that. The episode is supposed to portray the culture back then and how the concept of living together before marriage was seen. Back in the 50s and 60s it was a serious no no.
Sorry but Jack was kind of a jerk. I get that Karen living with Michael despite not being married bothered him but he didn't have to treat Michael that way.

I didn't see the whole series. But I wonder if Jack's dad had been there. Maybe he would've said, "Jack, I don't see why you've got such a problem with Michael. He seems like an okay guy to me." Jack would probably say, "Just stay out of it, Dad."

@@robinorlowski9045 he's not a hippie. He's grunge. Hippie was late sixties, grunge was late eighties, when this show came out. In no way shape or form is he a hippie. For that matter, find a flannel shirt at any video of Woodstock, Haight-Ashbury or any other hippie gathering. Even then, that won't make it commonplace or as 'trendy' as it was for grunge.
@@robinorlowski9045 Uh, correct! The show, which was supposed to be depicting the late sixties, is very inaccurate, with Schwimmer looking like someone from the late eighties, early nineties, grunge, essentially the same time and era (the show began in '88, but whenever the flannel shirt became so equated with grunge, it didn't just pop up with January 1, 1990 or '91. Just another Hollywood show trying to show another time and era, but blowing it mainly with present day fashions. Even still, grunge or hippie look is a fashion, not a mindset. There were greater hippies back in the early seventies than Mike Stivic, but we were talking about appearances, fashion equated with the era. Stivic rarely sported the garish attire equated with the early seventies. He was usually in blue jeans and a solid colored shirt. The 'grunge' look was not sported by hippies. And definitely not the way Schwimmer is showing it here.

Jack Arnold the most underrated character in the history of TV
David's character Michael could be the older brother of Kevin's best friend Paul.
Poor Kevin. He was trying to surprise everyone by treating them to dinner.

David schwimmer is such an underated actor imo. He was really good in b.o.b.
