What do you think I should make for my 2nd knife?
Stiletto… or a Fairborn Sikes Dagger
Stiletto, that would be cool.
Traditional 4 inchdrop point hunter, 8 in chefs Knife
Make a puko
@@jeffcopeland3958 hmm the knives are generally more focused on traditionally American designs. I don’t think I’d do a kukri.
as always, your HANDLES are adding value to your knives as tools, while the unadorned aesthetic of this particular knife stands apart in simplicity; top notch work!
Thanks! I had to spend quite a bit of time on this one. Starting knife #2 today! Thanks for watching!
Description of the steel is great info. Can you do a video to explain all the different steels blade smiths work with?
I have actually done that video already. It’s part of my Beginner Series playlist and titled “Knife Steel 101”. Go check that out. Thanks for watching
Just starting my road as an apprentice, awesome to see someone else working on this.
Good luck on your journey! Thanks for watching!
plunges look great in the process. That ash burl looks awesome
Thanks, Ryan!
Great to see more serious forging of the blade, enjoyed it. LOL, all I have to do is drop a piece on my shop floor to loose it. Looking forward to the next 👍👍.
Thanks Rodger! All these JS knives are mono steel and need to be forged. Not necessarily by hand but cannot be stock removal.
Slick fitment on the components. Nice to have Mike on speed dial for the soul crushing moments! This will be the fastest pass ever for a test knife. Gorgeous work.
I’ll feel better after getting some feedback from some masters at Blade Texas next month. Thanks for watching, James!
A nice, clean result. Looks great. The ash burl suits it.
Yeah, I thought the wood matched it pretty well. Thanks for watching
Another quality build and video. The grain pattern in that wood is awesome. It matches up perfectly with the style and finish of the blade. With knives like that I'm sure you will get your rating with no problem. I've learned a lot from your videos. Thanks!!
Thanks so much, Jax! I appreciate your support!
Hey man congrats on your journey! The knife looks beautiful!
Thanks so much! I’m already working on #2.
Nice piece. That handle wood is lovely.
Thanks for taking a look, Steve!
Half way through the video and already i know this is going to be a beautiful knife, one day i hope to buy one of these masterpieces
Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching!
I love that you don't have to focus more on aesthetics like you normally do, but the proof is in the pudding 😁👍🏽
It’s all about perfect fit and finish on these. That’s what they are testing. You can get fancy when you test for master. 👍 Thanks for watching!
@@TyrellKnifeworks Well then you have all of the skills for the Master Smith testing already!
that wood is absolutely out of this world. Gorgeous knife. Kudos!
Thanks for checking out the build! If you need handle material, there’s a link to my wood supplier in the comments. 👍
@@TyrellKnifeworks i make resin handle scales, but next time I do a wood one, I have the link book marked
Love the honesty
Great job brother and excellent fit up on that guard!
Thanks, Hunter! I appreciate you watching!
I took it and threw it across the room as one learning a trade I feel that. I’d love to get into knife making as a hobby
You should give knifemaking a try! Checkout my Beginner Series playlist. It will take you through what you need to get started and the basics. 👍 Thanks for watching
Can't wait to see your path to Journeyman! One of these days I want to do this.
You should do it, James!
Beautiful work.
Thanks for checking it out!
Hehe, threw it across the shop and now I can't find it :) Nice :) Looks amazing, good build.
Sometimes it happens. 🤷♂️😜. Thanks for watching!
Another great knife. I’m sure you will test great also I bet one day we see master smith next to your name. .
I hope you’re right, Rob! I’m going to keep trying until that happens. 👍
I absolutely love your blade styles. Would like to see your take on a bearded axe.
That is a project I’ll do at some point. Thanks for watching, Stephan!
That looks really nice.
Thanks for looking, Sam!
I prefer that profile, the harpoon point has sort of been done a bit beat to death over the last 5-6 years and as an artist/artisan you've got to throw a bit of your own impression into a knife I reckon. About the only problem I had with 80CRV2 was that you could literally leave it overnight and come back the next day with some truly awful surface corrosion well beyond even simple carbon steels for some reason, it does take a nice bluing through so that does help build up a protective patina.
Overall though, just from the video pictures I couldn't really spot anything which would be a defect in the finish. Which isn't the same as an in depth look in person but I'm sure you've gone over it a lot more than we can see.
It’ll be going to Blade Texas next month along with a few more, for some MS reviews and feedback. Hopefully they all pass. Thanks for watching, Kris!
looks amazing denis 1 down you will ace the test. i love that bowie looks sweet Mark😃👍👍
Thanks, Mark!
GREAT JOB BEST OF LUCK WITH TEST
Thanks, Rene!
Now that is better seeing the finished knife !!! You have a winner there. Just beautiful and you have a great way of teaching how it is done. Just a thought I would like to see you make a knife like Nichole carried on alone. That looks like a great all around knife. Would like to see the handle on it a little bigger but other than that she had a great idea for that knife. Just a thought.! A drop point hunter is a nice choice too. You have also made some great hunters too. One that could carry about 20 pounds of food hidden in the handle would be a great seller for alone LOL. Keep these videos coming.
Haha, I’ll have to look that one up. I’ll probably do a drop point hunter with an integral bolster, a small chef and a camp style. Not sure on the 5th. Thanks for watching!
@@TyrellKnifeworks Looking forward to all of them. Wishing you the best of luck.
That's a lovely knife fair play to you pal
Thanks for taking a look, Alex!
That's real nice work! You gotta love nice tight fit and finish!
Thanks for your support, Erik!
I think it will impress the master smiths! Great job buddy!
I sure hope so, Jeff! I’ll be taking it to Blade Texas for feedback before June so I’ll know if it’s gonna pass.
Really enjoy watching your videos and builds. Great job and best of luck on your journey
Thanks for following along and for your support, Jeffrey!
It was the handle that caught my attention to watch your video.
I like how it turned out. Thanks for watching, George!
That is gorgeous!!!
Thanks for taking a look, John!
Stunningly beautiful
Thanks for taking a look, Russell.
Yessss,
Magnifique Tyrell 🙏
Thank you for watching!
Your second one should be Cumai, of course! Wonderful first one.
No, they have to all be mono steel. I meant what knife type. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful!
Thanks for watching, Kenneth!
Another amazing piece! Looks great! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for taking a look, Stephen!
That handle is killer.
Thanks for checking it out! I thought it complemented the build. 👍
Another one well done!
Thanks for taking a look, Sean!
@@TyrellKnifeworks you’re always welcome!
Nice, clean, and very masculine. When you pass frame it.
I’m sure I will frame it. Thanks for watching!
almost 100 million subs good job!
Haha, I wish it was 100 million! 😜 Thanhs for your support
good morning, your job is amazing my friend, can you show your way to the satin finish?
I’ll show the satin finish on the next knife. 👍. Thanks for watching!
Great chanal! Best work so far if you ask me! Maybe chefs next?
I am going to do a chef knife as part of my 5. I won’t be #2, but it’s definitely one of them. 👍 Thanks for watching!
1 down 4 to go. Is there any requirements as to what type of knives you have to make or do you get full discretion?
You need to keep them simple and don’t stray too far from “typical” JS knives. The fancier you make them the more they have to judge you on. Plus they all must be mono steel. Thanks for watching, Greg!
Beautiful work as always man!!!!
Thanks for checking it out!
Love the handle material, good choice and it works great with the satin finish. (I love satin finish for the knives that see alot of use, hides the scratches)
Another 4 knives with this standard and it shouldnt be an issue getting approved as journeyman if you ask me.
Thanks, Johan! I hope you’re right! 🤞
the handle material looks like tiger shark skin; very approprite given his logo =)
@@LIONTAMER3D Ha, it does look like a tiger shark a bit! Nice.
Great job, not convinced by the loose pin though🤔 but what do I know😉
If you pin it with the same size, it’s really hard to get the handle flushed right up against the guard. Having a little play helps and it’s going to get filled with epoxy anyway. Try it. Thanks for watching
Looking good brother keep up the good work
Thanks brother! I appreciate you watching!
Gorgeous
Thanks for taking a look, Ron!
Beautiful knife!
Thanks for checking it out, Ralph!
I love it as usual... great work!
Thanks so much, Satricia! ❤️
What about doing the false edge on a horizontal wheel
It’s really tough to get it even. I can’t do it and get it perfect. The swooped ones in do by hand. Thanks for watching, Julian!
Two thumbs way Up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for checking it out, Jerry!
I can't imagine this isn't going to pass with flying colours! :D
I hope you’re right. I’ll find out at Blade Texas next month and get a few MS’s to review it and other knives.
@@TyrellKnifeworks Next MONTH?!? But-but-but... I'm hella excited NOW! :P
@@andersjjensen my test isn’t next month. I’m just bringing knives to show some masters and get feedback before my actual test in June.

Welcome to the channel! Thanks for checking out this build!
@@TyrellKnifeworks thanks for the welcome
Awesome blade. When are you going to try this blade?
I’ll be taking this one to Blade Texas for feedback but the actual test is in June in Atlanta. Thanks for watching
@@TyrellKnifeworks good luck
JS KNIFE #1 looks awesome brother! Looking forward to seeing the rest! 😎👍🏻🔨🔥🗡️ ....... Also, I was wondering... Why do they suggest only sanding to 400 grit? Can't you put any finish that you want?🤔
It’s harder to finish a knife to a higher grit and it’s easier to see scratches. A satin finish is easier for judging. Thanks for watching, Bob!
كان هذا مذهل بالأخص عمليت الطرق اليدوي لأنها تحتاج الى خبرة 👌
شكرا للتحقق من البناء! أنا أقدر مشاهدتك!
Also, sorry for the multiple comments. Putting it in the stainless bag is that just to guarantee equal heat distribution on the blade?
This blade is 80CRV2, which builds up a lot of decarburization on the surface so keeping it in an oxygen free environment helps prevent that. Thanks for watching
When your grinding in the blade edge of the knife, how do you know your angle is accurate and consistent? Is it just practice? It almost looks vertical from the camera angle. And I’d assume the angle you want is just to whatever guideline you put in?
You draw a center line on the edge, then grind your bevel to that line. The actual angle is somewhat irrelevant. Once you have scribe lines, you just grind to those. 👍
Good luck on your test, you'll do great! During my JS I haven't seen many knives that stood out like yours will surely do. Have you already gone through the performance test?
Yes, I've already passed the performance test. There's a video of it if you look back a few. Thanks for watching
@@TyrellKnifeworks oh damn, i must have missed it!! Congrats!! And good luck, even though I am sure you don't need it!!
I love all of these knives you're making man, good job! How long did it take you to make this one?
Just an hour or so for the forging then about 10 more hours for the fittings, sanding and finishing. Thanks for checking it out.
Beautiful work. Do a ka-bar.
I don’t think I’d do a kabar. You need to stick to very standard and simple knives for the JS presentation test. Thanks for watching, Stephen!
@@TyrellKnifeworks I just mentioned it as you did a very good job on the Cu-bars that a simple mono steel one would be a good presentation.
It's the leather stacked handle and pommel... too much complexity for a JS knife. Every part you put on it, they judge. You go fancy on the master smith knives, not the JS ones. 👍🏻
Yo! What happened to the misting system? I always thought that was brilliant.
I don’t use it much because it’s hard to film with it and since I film almost everything it’s a pain. When I do stainless steel I use it though. Thanks for watching
Very very nice Denis!!! You make it look easy!! I know better though!!!👍😎
Thanks so much, Mike! I appreciate that
Will this be tested for sharpness and resistance to bashing something hard or is it just for show and tell ?
Is just one pin enough for a strong knife (generally speaking)?
Thank you
This is one of the knives for the presentation test. I already passed the performance test. Single pin is quite common for hidden tang knives like this. Thanks for watching
Great work on that! Have been wondering how do you get your makers mark on there? I have wanting to make some items of mine but not sure how.
I’ve shown that in other videos. Check my beginner series playlist, I go into detail on it in a video in there. 👍
@@TyrellKnifeworks Ok thank you!
You passed the torture tests, the rest will be cake for you.
From what I've heard from several JS and MS the quality judgement is actually harder and where most who fail do so
Joseph is correct, more people fail the presentation test. The key is getting feedback BEFORE you present your knives. I’ll be taking this one and a few more to Blade Texas next month for feedback. 👍
@@TyrellKnifeworks FYI I've heard from a JS friend of mine a big one is j-hook scratches especially near and on plunge..
@@josephrector8735 Yup, I've heard the same thing. I made sure there's nothing but linear sanding marks on this one. 👍🏻. Thanks Joseph!
Does the point have to be hammered from square,we are blacksmiths aren’t we 🤷🏽♂️
Use a hardy cuttoff at a 45 would cut the time down even if it is thin bar stock 💪🏽👊🏼😉
It was the end of the bar, why cutoff a piece instead of just forging the tip? It took about 5 mins so not really that much time. If I was cutting the stock, sure you could use a hardy. Thanks for watching.
it's a different feeling watching your videos when you know the knife is gonna end up getting bent 90 degrees lmao
He already did the performance test, he now must forge 5 knives for judges to determine fit/finish neatness quality
Yes, Joseph is correct. This is one of the presentation knives to be evaluated for fit and finish my a panel of masters.
What price range would you have on your knifes if you were selling them?
who knows? he never has anything in stock because he sells out quickly.
For pricing questions, please email tyrellknifeworks at gmail. Thanks for watching, Robert!
I have a question, how are you doing your logo?? I’ve been stamping mine and I’m just not happy with it, did you bite the bullet and just order a logo engraver or is hand built?? PLEASE HELP 😢 Lol
Hey Josh, I use a stencil and electro-etch my logo. I’ve done videos on it in the past. You can buy stencils from IMG Electromark, you just send them graphics and they’ll make you a sheet of stencils for $50. Thanks for watching
Clever to make normalising cycles in a foil
I don't do it for everything but 80CRV2 decarbs like crazy so it helps. Thanks for watching!
"threw it across the room..." .. dude if only you could see my walls
Haha, well it happens from time to time. Thanks for watching, Nicholas.

what material is the knife handle made out of? it's not wood is it?
Yes, it’s an Ash Burl that’s been stabilized with resin. It’s from Oleg, his site is in the video description. Thanks for watching
@@TyrellKnifeworks Thanks for the answer, just to let you know, you are one of the reasons i have started making knives of my own. How can i find percise alternative to pins except nails
Why do you want an alternative to pins? You can always use G10 pins if you want to stay away from metal pins. Thanks for watching.
