One thing I especially appreciate about you is you figure out how to do things cheaply. Being on disability 'Cheap' is the only way I can live. :)
@Ik You simply have to make yourself someone who will not quit. In most cases there are people worse-off.
I know what you mean being on disability gardening helps with the food cost but it is an expensive thing to do and this gentleman really helps out bringing that price down for that I love him
💚
Thanks Dan!
The cute dog is the selling point. Doggie approved.
I really like the natural look of these planters! I appreciate that you do not have background music.
The water from fountain, that was goid background music...love a good fountain
In our current times of growing scarcity for all things relative to gardening, I have noticed that finding containers to grow things in has been somewhat challenging. This is a neat alternative!
It is great idea. But you'll always have your natural soil. You just have to know what you can grow in it and which plants will provide food for you in your zone. Also it's wise to know your wild plants. Dandelion. Chickweed. Wood Sorrel. Purslane. Super easy to grow, they come up wild and you can provide them extra water here and there to help them grow more abundant for you.
Oh and also look up to see if you have any native edible plants in your area. Great plant to have around is a native plant that provides you food too.
I agree, pots are challenging to find and very expensive! I love this alternative. I'm think I'm going to use a # 2 tin tub as my mold and make several to grow vegetables in....I'm thrilled to have found this. However, I think I may wash another coat of cement inside and out after it dries to make a bit more stable
True..and especially now I think stores have seen uptick in people gardening so prices even higher. I can't believe what plain ole run of the mill terra cotta planters cost now- its insulting! I got some way cheaper last year. Good to know how to also make plain grow bags and other things more decorative not just for yourself but so no one complains about aesthetics.
Yea, no clickbait! Upvote!
this is literally the best garden hack I've seen in years. was trying to figure out how to keep my grow bags from getting mold all over them (live in south east) because I'm in an apartment balcony gardening...didn't want to stain the balcony. Think this will be an inexpensive, attractive solution. And I can even get the cheap grow bags, which i hesitated to use alone...thinking they would not hold up as well as SmartPots. Thank you Thank you Thank you
Similar containers used for water storage were used in poorer villages.Hessian was sewn to make the container shape. It was then filled with a material like sand or sawdust and a concrete render was applied thinly on the outside. The pot was then emptied and rendered on the inside.Large pots were made in situ. They were long lasting as long as they were not moved and could be adapted to be a planter. No metal reinforcing was used.
Hello mate
the idea is good but I see it a bit weak
I think that once the cement has hardened, you should give it a second coat, or whatever is needed. inside or outside, to give more solidity to the structure, even use something similar to fiber cement, especially on the upper edge, which is one of the areas that will support more loads
greetings good job
Woow i love this idea as my husband having so much excess cement from his construction/renovation work and i have tons of grocery bags...thanks a lot for sharing
0:26 lol
Men's best friend 😊
Pup in a pot lol! My favorite type of dog. Little wire hair mix. Ty for the video. Great info! Oh I'm a dog groomer.
This seems like a great way to reinforce cloth bags once they have gotten too broken down to use as is anymore.
I love watching you do these easy things. It calms me so then I go out and dont stress as much about plants. Thank you God bless
I like that you could still lift the pot. It wasn’t so heavy from the concrete that you couldn’t manage it. Wonderful idea and lots of great ideas in the comments!
You can do that with mortar but add about a cup of type 2 wood glue (it suspends the sand particles in the mortar mix and adds flexibility). You can make it much “soupier” so it’s easier to work with...you could also do this with a sheet, clothes, canvas drop cloth, cloth laundry bag, ect...
Great idea, thx!
I'd leave the handls and cover them in the cement, too. Easier to move when it's full for me.
Oooh im gonna make some long beds with landscape fabric and cement haha thanks
Well this will absolutely make the grow bags last MUCH longer! Thanks
Adorable 🐕🦺🙂
look at that beautiful face peeking out the top of the pot, so cute!!
One of my favorite words, cheap!
I love the furry accent added in the beginning ❤😊
This idea popped into my head so I googled and your video popped up. Great minds think alike 😉. Thanks for doing the work to help all of us out.
I love the face on your dog!
I just purchased a cloth container I thought I could use in the garden somehow. Now I know exactly what to do. Thank you for this video !
Best helper ever
you could use your burlap, cut into length, soak in your cement and wrap around your frame then add burlap cement soaked top and rub over the sides to join the two together over your wire cage.
Your dog really seems to be enjoying the concrete pot, lol! I love this project! Thank you so much for sharing!
2022 I get to start my first garden. I'm Thankful I have you. Your ideas are inexpensive and smart. I'm learning a lot and feel like I might be successful in growing a garden.
I love your pots...but I think I love your beautiful Dog more! Much love and gratitude from Scotland.
That's awesome! That gives me an idea to do it with pillowcases. I have a bunch of pillowcases that came from a hotel getting new linens.
Now I know what to do with all these grow bags. I wasn't going to use them this year because it's so difficult to keep things watered during the hot SC summers. Thank you.
Could use a tomato cage cut in half for reinforcement for smaller pots too 🤔
Awwwe cute dog!
You could make a rough stucco type texture that would deter slugs
Now you need to acid stain them, check into it, I've done almost the same thing but I used old towels
Hmmm 🤔 You have my wheels turning on this one! I wonder what else I could soak in concrete as a pot? 🤯
Old sheets, stained towels, old pants, grandma's drapes.. 😀
Could try a grocery bag. Paper or plastic.
Old tire. Put a coating of concrete around the tire. May protect the soil from the tire breaking down with the concrete encasing it.
Some lace around the top edge would be so cut!
And what about a pair of jeans? If you can keep them filled with something, you can make a very funny bit of decoration 😂
So very kewl….looks very rustic indeed!! Love it 🥰. I’m not sure how much a bag of that particular cement is but it’s gotta be a lot less expensive then buying one pot that size from your local hardware store. Looks like it would be fun to make too. Thank you for sharing this and so many other wonderful ideas and creative projects. Your making this world a better place by teaching so many others how to also get creative in the garden.
You could possibly paint it with like a bronze spray paint and make it look like one of those $80 - $120 pots too 🤙
Thank you! It's about $10 for a 47 lb bag. You can make 4-5 30 gallon pots with one bag. Cheers!
@@plantabundance WOW, that is very affordable and it’s your own creation too. I looked on Amazon but was way more expensive or maybe it wasn’t quite the right one. Since I’ve never bought Portland cement, can you just buy it at Lowes or Home Depot?
@@dogslobbergardens6606 so much great info about what kinds of paints or adding different colored pigments to it. Thank you kindly for all the great info.
@@wisteria4981 Portland cement refers to the mix or recipe for the cement, not a brand name. As it's the most commonly used cement, you should be able to get it at any hardware store. It's usually one of the cheapest options as well.
I love your channel! Two comments: most people don't know that concrete is a major source of CO2 emissions. It is also highly alkaline, which can harm some plants. I'll steer clear of this particular DIY. Thanks!
oh good, CO2 actually is necessary for plant growth. So maybe it will help my plants, since the CO2 levels in the atmosphere are at an historic low--much lower won't support plant growth. Why do you think pot growers have to use CO2 producing machines? Yeah for concrete plant holders
LOVE THIS!!
Awesomeness
The pot starts out “rustic” with the funny pooch inside.Love the ruffled look.
I'd seen the pots made from fabric layed overtop of an inverted pot and then planted in the upright possition. This is a pretty cool. I'm not a fan of the look of the fabric grow pots, but this, I like this. Thanks for sharing.
I wonder if one makes just one, and use that as a support/mold to hang & dry the next one on.
As it looks quite finicky to work with the wire frame each time.
Plus just leave the first one on the wire to help for a better 'footing' for the following pots?
There is one disadvantage in doing this, and each gardener has to make their own choices. The advantage of fabric pots is they do not get root bound, because when the roots grow through to air they die/ self limit. By adding cement you take away this advantage. Now you may not be using felt pots for this reason, maybe just for low cost. This does look nice, and maintains the low cost advantage.
Love this
Love the doggie so cute
Ooh I do like this.
Love that pot!
What a super idea! Very clever. Thank you!
Love this!
Oh I wanna do that! Thanks, Dan.
Well, I WAS happy with my black fabric grow bags... those concrete bags look so much better!! I needed an outside project; looks like I have one now. Thank you.

Love it, I need to try this one. Thank you🙏🏻
Love your dog! So cute!
Thanks Dan from a new sub. 🙂
I've seen something similar with soaking old towels and draping them over a bucket or box. This is faster and easier! Looks like a great place to grow a few potatoes. 👍
Thank you 👌💕
Thank you. You just solved my problem with those bags in Colorado. I didn't know Colorado was so arid and when I planted stuff in mine, it dried out too quickly.
Yo this channel instantly caught my eyes, 😂 sooo underrated!!
