You have just solved my watering issues. I have 17 garbage can rain barrels. I have them stationed near where I'm growing my plants (pretty much all are in pots) and I transfer the rainwater from the 'collection' rain barrels to the other rain barrels via a transfer pump. I then water the plants using a bucket or watering can. It's been difficult to keep schlepping heavy buckets. I just couldn't figure out which pump to use, or the hose setup, to move the water from the barrels to the pots. Your video has now given me answers. Also, instead of using the concrete bins, one can use a rubber feeder bowl from Tractor Supply. They're only $10 and they hold 6-7 1 gallon pots or 3-4 3 gallon pots. They're about 3' across and 6-7" deep and are perfect to hold the pots. I used them one year to hold my pots of peppers and it worked wonderfully. I still had to monitor the water and pour water in them, but now I can do it automatically! Thank you, so much, for your ingenuity. It helps a lot!
You should look up Dr. Kratky and his siphon. That's what I did with my similar set up, except I don't need electricity due to siphon action and a float valve.
Not a rap fan, but poppin grommets was hilarious! 🤣 Thanks for this video as I've been planning a manual plant watering method with trash cans on my off grid property. The cans will be my rainwater collection method with a hole in the lid with insect screening, and the lid curving downward into the can for maximum input. I put a standard outdoor faucet near the bottom of the can to connect my hose to and use gravity to feed the water. I can have as many cans as I need as my garden grows larger. I will be using a similar system of cans for my personal use water where they will be lined up around my house with the first in-line can at a downspout, and small diameter pvc pipe connecting the cans to overflow into the line. Bottom faucet on each one. Blessings, Texas Deb ❤️
Dan, Thanks so much for being so thorough in descriptions and directions about your projects. Great camera work Alice, but not as great as your sunny smile. ( : Your fun "poppin' grommets" song brought a smile to my face, Dan. Love it when you add a bit of silly to your vids. :D
Great video! Thank you for showing us the whole video with mistakes and all. Alice you did a GREAT job of not missing anything. It takes a team to do great filming. I love your hat, you look so adorable. Pretty and adorable is a great combination. Just a suggestion, as a precaution I use Summit Mosquito dunks to make sure no mosquitos don't find a way in or something goes wrong. They last 30 days in constant water or 30 waterings meaning they dry out between waterings. To keep gnats away I use the Bits and put about 2T in a mesh bag and soak in my 2 gal watering can for about an hour, pull out the bag and water plants with the water. I make sure I water the plants first, let it soak in then water with the Bits water. It's safe for wildlife, pets, kids and organic gardeners. The Bits get moldy if you sprinkle them on top of soil by themselves. It's corn hulls with a bacteria that kills mosquito and gnat larvae. water once a week or so or if you're finding mosquitos. If there's an infestation of gnats do this every week until they're gone. This also works for indoor plants and seed starting. It's really amazing stuff. I'm doing due diligence this year in keeping mosquitos away and this helps enormously. I live in a wooded community so I can't keep them all away. Not that you have mosquitos but it's for those folks who might need a little help with those blood suckers.
Lmao was not expecting the grommet rap. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 thank you for the video. I'm doing raised beds with square bags as liners and this system is perfect for my beds.
Growing plants in the winter when you live in a warmer climate, I found that I can make a greenhouse over the planted area, by using a 5 gal. water jar. When they leak and not useful to hold water, I cut the bottom off and the spout allows air in. The fact that they are heavy, the cold and frost are held back. On cold nights I put the lid back on. The bottom also makes a great plant saucer.
That was incredible, it also helped me solve my watering issue. I just have to adapt it to my grow bags and bucket system. I also enjoyed your "Poppin' Grommets rap. Very entertaining.
If I hadn't already subscribed I would've when you were Poppin' grommets! Loving your content so far. Once you get addicted to gardening you also get addicted to watching other people garden & learning about more gardening!
I love the self watering container set up. I'm looking at every system to figure out what might work best for me. I've seen a similar set up, but they set everything up so that each feed line was slightly lower than the other. It was either an Alaskan Bucket system or a rain gutter system. They used a Float Ball Valve Shut Off so it automatically watered everything when the water line dropped. Once the waterline came back up to the designated level, it automatically shut off. Like a toilet. Your trouble shooting for the lines and the Grommet rap, are a great addition to my toolbox. Thanks!
I only have a balcony garden but I'm going to do a very small scale of this for science class with my kids. I'm just going to have them do it without the pump to show how the water keeps running after it starts. Eventually we will have a yard and I hope to have a real garden.
you just gave me an answer to my problem. we have downspouts that go all of the way to ground level. I wanted to be able to collect the rain water from them, but my husband won't put anything on the downspout itself to make it high enough for a rain barrel( and I am pretty sure no rain barrel has a collection hole at the bottom. I am still trying to figure that part out,but my garden is a very long ways down a steep hill away from the house and nearest downspout. you just helped me figure out how to transfer the water from whatever I rig up by the downspout to some kind of container(s) placed at the bottom of the hill and be able to set up an automatic drip system. I was thinking of something like a water bladder or similar since it lays on the ground and lays flat but need to see into that part
Not only was this super helpful, the grommets rap was dope, NGL. Wonderful job and thank you so much for the help! With water restrictions in my state coming, I'm hoping this, will help me use water more efficiently. I'm also going to cut back a bit this year in my garden.
Recently found your channel and have been binge watching from Australia; love all your helpful advice, I’m a newbie to gardening and not familiar with hardware stores so I appreciate the full explanation of equipment needed and the close up shots so I can show in store. I would love if you could put a little note up on screen for metric conversion if possible. I thought you were a quiet introvert sort of person till I heard your grommet rap🤣 Loved it! 🤣🤣🤣
I have watched you for a while, this video right here made a fan. You are very educational and love following you. Glad you do have fun and not just down to business always. Loved the video and i am saving it so I can jam as I build mine.
There are grommets made for the cord too, they work great! Glad you mention needing a siphon-break at a high point on your water feed line. Been using a similar system for 15 years, the smaller masonry trays fit perfectly into a Sterlite 30 gallon tote. Instant self-contained hydro-pod using a recycle timer.
You can also attach a Kerick Valve to one of the growing containers and then combine all the containers, that are on the same level to this container that has the Kerick Valve. No pump needed.
The chlorine will evaporate in a few hours without any help, if your concerned at all, just fill your bucket a day in advance. You could eliminate the valves and equalize your tanks with a short pipe between them plus you would only have to run tubing to the first tank. Love the pin hole trick for the siphon! I’ll be setting something like this up for sure.
Thanks! FYI, many water treatment facilities now treat with "chloramine", which is an ammonia and chlorine bond that does not easily break down and dissipate like chlorine alone. It can take weeks and would need adequate UV and aeration to accomplish. A small amount of vitamin c crystals (ascorbic acid) will effectively neutralize both chlorine and/or chloramines in minutes. Your idea to run an overflow connection series is a good idea and will work but doesn't allow for custom hydration settings. This set-up will allow you to grow celery in one container and kale in another, dialing in more water to the celery each watering cycle.
Nice setup. I've been using a kiddie pool for watering my growbags & sandbags. You can get them for under $8 in my area. I'm going to start popping grommets & incorporate your irrigation system to lighten my load. 😊❤
Hello!👋Just watched your video and my first time watching. Thanks for the tips! Those cement mixing containers for great size for planting! I'm your new subscriber! Aloha🌺

That interlude was fantastic! Unexpected, and a nice break from the seriousness of the work of a food forest!
How did I miss this one! 😂 Got me dancing this morning. Thanks Dan.

I agree. This is a bit of overkill.
Was not ready for you to drop "Popping Grommets" though! Low key goes hard! lol
Poppingrommets was the best!!!! Thanks for the videos, I find them useful and I can implement a lot of what you show.
Great setup, I appreciate you showing your original design and your redesign to show what what could go wrong and how to fix it. Great video

We pop grommets! We pop grommets!!😄😂🤣😅
If hadn't already recently subscribed, that would've gotten me to do so.
Love your videos.
Missed seeing your Fly Girl pop grommets with you. Include her next time! Lol.
You can also attach a Kerick Valve to one of the growing containers and then combine all the containers, that are on the same level to this container that has the Kerick Valve. No pump needed.
Do you need to add drainage holes in the sand bags or do they absorb moisture?
This setup is awesome!
That’s my question too.
Great hat Alice, great idea for plants. Take care
Poppin grommets
