So here is a suggestion on how to reuse the soil. In the fall when your summer plants are dying/gone go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and get a big storage container. Then put all the dirt in them and mix in some dead leaves, grass clippings, and food scrapes. Keep moist and you will have renewed soil for next year!

That’s what I did last year. I stuffed all the leaves from the garden clean up late fall into a bin with used potting soil and then I added compost microbes from Lowe’s and I was shocked at the beautiful soil I have waiting to plant this year.

A cheap plastic kid's pool is a great way to water growbeds from underneath. Letting water wick up keeps the surface dry so less weeds can germinate. Put a hole in the pool about 3" from the bottom so it can't get too full from the rain. Put a mosquito dunk in the water to kill the larvae. You can leave your plants much longer that way than watering with a hose. One pool fits a lot of bags, depending on the sizes used.

I have my grow bags on plant stands with casters... (the round plant stands that they sell at Lowes/HD), I find them easier to move.
They are also easy/inexpensive to make, which I eventually did the more bags I bought. The plant stands at the store are not inexpensive so by making them I saved some money and instead put those savings towards more seeds/soil ect. We had an extra cedar fence panel that didn't get used so I took the panels apart and cut them into 12x12 and build a plant stand and added casters... they turned out nice. Now I know how to make them for anything that I need help with moving. All it cost me where the $10.00 casters., and that was because I went with the expensive casters.. which honestly is not necessary.
Also if you aren't good with tools you can find real good wooden cutting boards at the thrift stores for around $2.00, all you have to do is screw the casters and call it a day (those I would seal properly so they last longer).
And that's how I move my bags or heavy ceramic pots... or anything heavy that I can't move alone... even furniture 😅

I’m in central NC. Just starting a small victory garden. We have a great area with morning sun and late afternoon shade in the front yard, but with this being my first time gardening, I wasn’t ready to tackle amending the very root filled, clay based soil. Opted for containers and grow bags. Just got 12 fifteen gallon bags yesterday! I’m happy to hear that the “cons” for using grow bags are fairly minimal. This was very helpful. Thank you!!

You can make a drip irrigator out of an inverted 2L soda bottle and piece of string, to help keep things moist.

I got around the watering issue by setting up a timer controlled drip irrigation system. Never had a problem with drying out.

Thanks very much for this video. It was really informative. I'm using grow bags and I've learnt things I didn't know. I really appreciated that you gave the volume in litres as well as gallons, I'm in Australia and it can be a pain always converting this. Thanks again.

Hi Angela, thank you for the tips and suggestions! I use black plastic containers for my tomatoes and other vegetables and you’re right, they tend to dry so fast specially on hot days. I also just started to use your soil mix of compost, coco coir/ peat moss and vermiculite. Thanks for all the info. I wondered, though about fertilizing them in the container! Probably more frequently than the requirements on the fertilizer box?

Exactly. I didn't go into fertilizing but plants in containers need more frequent fertilizer than those in the ground for sure. I would feed lightly more often - applying less than recommended but more often than recommended, if that makes sense.

Our first year using grow bags. Agree there is a learning curve with watering. Seems the bags not only dry out top to bottom, but outside to inside. Would like to try some brown ones to see if they reduce heat compared to black. Thanks for great information!
