So here is a suggestion on how to reuse the soil. In the fall when your summer plants are dying/gone go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and get a big storage container. Then put all the dirt in them and mix in some dead leaves, grass clippings, and food scrapes. Keep moist and you will have renewed soil for next year!
That’s what I did last year. I stuffed all the leaves from the garden clean up late fall into a bin with used potting soil and then I added compost microbes from Lowe’s and I was shocked at the beautiful soil I have waiting to plant this year.
I’ve spent the last month doing research as I am preparing for my garden. I’ll be using grow bags for 90% of my vegetables and flowers and it’s been impossible finding a in depth video. I absolutely love this video. Everything I needed to know explained and detailed!
I have my grow bags on plant stands with casters... (the round plant stands that they sell at Lowes/HD), I find them easier to move. They are also easy/inexpensive to make, which I eventually did the more bags I bought. The plant stands at the store are not inexpensive so by making them I saved some money and instead put those savings towards more seeds/soil ect. We had an extra cedar fence panel that didn't get used so I took the panels apart and cut them into 12x12 and build a plant stand and added casters... they turned out nice. Now I know how to make them for anything that I need help with moving. All it cost me where the $10.00 casters., and that was because I went with the expensive casters.. which honestly is not necessary. Also if you aren't good with tools you can find real good wooden cutting boards at the thrift stores for around $2.00, all you have to do is screw the casters and call it a day (those I would seal properly so they last longer). And that's how I move my bags or heavy ceramic pots... or anything heavy that I can't move alone... even furniture 😅
A cheap plastic kid's pool is a great way to water growbeds from underneath. Letting water wick up keeps the surface dry so less weeds can germinate. Put a hole in the pool about 3" from the bottom so it can't get too full from the rain. Put a mosquito dunk in the water to kill the larvae. You can leave your plants much longer that way than watering with a hose. One pool fits a lot of bags, depending on the sizes used.
I've been growing in fabric pots for over ten years. Never really thought of combining vermiculite with with a fabric grow pot. Heard a lot negative things about to much water retention with vermiculite in traditional plastic pots. Makes a lot of sense in a fabric pot situation. Thank you for the great information.
I’m hoping you will see this :) Can a canvas tote bag be repurposed to make a grow bag or does it not provide enough air circulation/drainage? I’ve been looking on YT for last 30-45m but haven’t found the answer yet.

I use my vertical tower for herbs and strawberries. I just found your channel and subscribed because it is hard to find information specific to our climate. SO GLAD that I came across your vid on the garden website! This is my first year growing vegetables in a grow bag. I didn't even know they existed until a couple of years ago when my upstairs neighbor used them to grow vegetables on her patio. Wish I had seen this video before I purchased my grow bags because I would have gotten a self-watering grow bag for my tomatoes. Oh well! Next year. I am in a condo and I'm not allowed to plant outside so I am doing my garden 100% indoors this year and hoping for the best.
Great tips, graphics and to the point. Thank you for this excellent info. Would LOVE to see a DIY of the self watering grow bag so it is more affordable. Thanks again!
