If I had a time machine, I would love to watch the 222-0 Georgia Tech vs Cumberland game in 1916 in person. What a strange game that will probably never be matched. All kinds of odd rules in the sport back then.
Just read about Tick Tichenor. What a sad story, apparently when the players picked him up off the pile and asked if he was going to stay in he said “of course, Bill, I have too much Georgia grit”. What a legend. As is his mother for writing that letter. Thanks for sharing
You could field a punt or kick from a creek bed because there weren't but "loose" boundaries for the playing field. A guy drowned trying to do that but he was gang tackled and he couldn't get his head out of water. If football was modern day gladiatorial sport and Yale won like 20 national titles back then, what does that say about how tough Yale's boy were?? There was a girl named Burnadette Decker who played in Cumberland MD who died in 1905.
More attention needs to be paid to history. Saying anything before "segregation" is not important is a cop out. Do you think that Jim Thorpe and Red Grange are irrelevant? Recruiting today is extremely important. Guess what ? Before 1900, colleges were ALREADY using under the table means to recruit players who were "students" in name only. An excellent book on all of this is " Stagg vs. Yost": The Birth of Cutthroat Football" by John Kryk. The period of 1905 and 1906 with the brutality, threats of banning the sport and resulting rule changes is also covered there.
If it wasn't strictly the SEC I'd buy it. I think the SEC rigs the College Football Playoff rankings each year. Or I should say there's an absolute bias towards the SEC!

Pate getting some of that evergreen content going. Nice.
I would play 1900’s football even if I knew I would become one of those death victims

There’s not a bias, the SEC is just the best conference in the last 15 years
