  • This week is our first test drive of the boats we built for just over $1k in just a few weeks. This was our test run before we embark on the trip to Peel island!

    Love the builds! The jet could definitely use way more prop. Considering the torque that 6 cyl makes, you could step the prop way up and get better speed and lower rpms.

      The props in those jet units are already pretty good, a 2:1 ratio would suit it better as that jet unit is meant to run at around 7k rpm or higher

    On the pontoons weld a flat plate that sticks out like 4 inches on top front of the pontoon that's wider than the Pontoon as a splash plate. Kinda like a solid mud flap. On that old inline six. I would take out the thermostat and let the water to just flow straight through. That should help with cooling. Also on that straight six I'd put like a CVT drive on it. Kind of like a snow machine or side by side. So that way it'll move the jet drive faster than the RPMs of the engine when cruising. You can also adjust the spring and weights of a CVT so you can have it at Max gearing at like 2500 RPMs. Maybe you can find a wrecked side by side to steal the CVT drive off of. Also you may need a steeper pitch on the impeller.

      Boats have different power requirements than cars; upshifting while cruising will only overload the engine and make the overtemp issue worse. While a 3000 lb. car may only require 20 or so HP to maintain 75 MPH on level ground, a 3000 lb. boat would require 300-400 HP to do the same speed. Consider too, that water is about 800 times more dense than air, so it's going to produce around 800 times more drag on the wetted surface than if it were a car driving down the road.
      I digress. To "change gears" in a boat, you need to change the prop/impeller. Under certain very special circumstances, a multi-speed transmission works in a boat, but that clapped out shit heap is far, far from any of them. There's also a ton of other factors in play here... poor pump design (note all the aerated water behind it and the leaks at the transom), mismatched impeller to the engine, overweight and underpowered engine, not enough RPMs, ect...
      It was a fun project I'm sure, but that thing needs so much revision to be improved, they're better off starting with a clean slate.

    T in a water inlet into the exhaust and extend it’ll help keep temps down also if you can find a steeper pitch impeller it’ll help a lot they can be pretty cheap

      Impeller is also quite sensitive to gap, efficiency goes up is it fits 🤓

      I was thinking it could do with an overdrive box in there to spin the jet drive faster, the old Holden 6 just doesn't rev near hard enough

    New wear ring in jet unit, should only just be able to get a sheet of paper between the impeller and the wear ring, any more it will cavitate.

    Way more savage Pitch on the Jet or Spin it at double speed with a gearing setup. I thought that would be an issue. The jet ski motors turn much higher RPM than an Old Holden 6 But you do have the advantage of torque. If you could find a 1:2 gearbox you'd be laughing or use a chain and sprockets. Great Job on both fellas. Few modifications and tweaks and You'll be right. If that Island is 50-80Km out, you are going to need a fair bit more fuel I think.

    Really wicked job lads so glad I found this channel! Maybe experiment with different pitch impellers which is basically like changing diff gears and tyre size.
    either way can't wait to see more on the projects when budget allows keep it up boys 👏

    Jet drive impeller with much higher pitch will get the rowboat up on plane easier. Also put a ride plate under the Jet drive. The Jetski pontoons need a splash shield from lower front edge up an along the boat hull.

    Someones already mentioned a scoop on the inlet for the reds cooling water but also needs the telltale moved over to the drivers side so you can just put your right hand over the edge while driving to feel if its pumping and what the temp is.

  • @Ronin8451
    @Ronin8451 3 года назад +2

    You definitely need to rtv seal the pump assembly against the transom to prevent the leaks you have.

  • @matui6983
    @matui6983 3 года назад +1

    Needs a scoop on the water intake to help get water into the pump and a rubber impellor type pump instead of the SBC one.
    Proper impellor pumps can generate anywher from 20-70psi, easy enuf to push cooling water thru a 186. Plus they can suck the water up while engine is just idling.

    Impressive fab work. For the cooling on the jet boat, why not just tap into the jet pump for your water supply? Rather than running the electric water pump.

    There is something wrong in the alignment in the Jet engine, they should put a trust bearing at the end of the impeller shaft. it would have been more faster.

    You have half of it done already ... build a jackshaft and put a gear advantage via chain or belts! Start at 2:1 your steering will imorove with more water volume out of the nozzle

    Awesome builds, asking a red motor for RPM though...
    You need an old Mazda 1300 engine....will rev at 8-9000rpm all day

  • @gingerashly4240
    @gingerashly4240 3 года назад +1

    Oh yeah, and that jet unit is meant to run at 6-8k rpm, so you can either find a gearbox that has a 2:1 ratio or you can try a sprocket and chain method

  • @stiantiger
    @stiantiger 3 года назад +1

    The jet needs gearing so the engine don' t have to rev so hard, and the pontoons can't have that angle in the front.
    Other than that, great job guys..!!
