My first flight was in a Ford Tri-motor in 1946. I was 4 years old, and my dad had a friend who worked at the Eugene, Oregon airport. He arranged to take us up for a ride. It's one of the few memories I have from that long ago (I'm now 77). I have always loved to fly, and I have flown (sadly, as a passenger only) in many of the piston and then jet aircraft from that time to this. The smallest plane I've been in was a Piper Cherokee. The largest was a 747.

I actually got the awesome privilege of flying on this tri-motor back in 2019 in Bend Oregon. I wasn't aware it was in town till I heard the radials and I ran outside (I always do that when I hear radials!). I got on it the next day. It was an amazing experience!

The rate that early aviation progressed was _insane._ As antique as this 92-year-old beauty looks, in many ways it's more similar to a modern airliner than it is to the Wright Flyer that kicked off powered flight a mere 25 years earlier: Fully enclosed passenger compartment in the now-classic airliner layout, comfortable for the times, pretty reliable and safe, etc, etc. They pretty much invented and refined control surfaces, cockpits, control lines, fuel routing, landing gear, and so much more - in a single human generation.

Magnifcent to see one of these birds in flight. My great uncle started TAT and hired Lindbergh to lay out the routes, while the system was dubbed "The Lindbergh Line." Apparently Lindy would occasionally fly alongside a Trimotor in a smaller biplane, probably a Curtiss Civil Falcon (D12 or Conqueror powered) and wave to the passengers. The toilets were free to air.

I had the opportunity to book a flight on this airplane when it came through Reno Stead Airport in the fall of 2016. It was one heck of an experience. We flew a "lap" around the Unlimited course used by the air racers during the Air Races every year. It felt like stepping back in time to the 1920s. What a time capsule! If you have the opportunity to do the same, please take advantage of it. I cannot recommend the experience highly enough. Amazing!
BTW it was the first time I've been on an airliner that had seats that were comfortable for me! I'm 6'5" and 280lbs. I was shocked! I NEVER expected my most comfortable airliner ride to be on a 90-year-old aircraft.

I flew in one back in 1973 when I went to Oshkosh. I am not sure if this is the airplane. I sat under the wing next to the right motor. It is a good thing that the DC-3 came along because as the C-47, it was a far superior airplane than the Junkers TriMotor.

While in Las Vegas Scenic Airlines had there Trimotor out & about, caught it flying just south of our house, it had a very distinctive sound, pretty neat to see. Then some months later they had a rocket car competition, & classic car event going on near Henderson at a dry lake bed. They brought their Trimotor out, it was on display, & everyone who wanted to was able to check it out inside & out. Was pretty neat!

Thanks for the video -- and for those who did this marvelous rehabilitation.of a great airplane.
My father, Fritz Steiner. was a crewmember on TAT's first west bound commercial flight in 1928 or 29. He was the Purser. He told me numerous stories about his times as a TAT crew member,
TAT's transcontinental service was a combination of a Pennsylvania RR train called the "Airways Limited" that departed New York City in the evening and arrived at Port Columbus Airport near Columbus, OH, the next morning. There the Pullman passengers would disembark and make their way under an awning-covered walkway to a waitin TST Ford Trimotor. After everybody was aboard, they'd take off for Waynoka, OK where then procedure was reversed and the passengers boarded a Santa Fe RR train than brought them through the night to Albuquerque , NM, where they boarded the final flight headed for Glendale, CA.
My father.enjoyed interacting with his passengers. He said that the on last leg the flight left Alburqueque about 75 minutes after the Santa Fe train had departed.. Somewhere along the way they'd catch up with the train. He'd point it out to them and tell the passengers that what they were doing by flying was that much faster than the train that going to the same place -- and he was 100% correct.
He told me that it was so much faster that after the plane landed in Glendale, he'd take the Pacific Electric train to downtown, Los Angeles, go to his hotel, get spiffed up, and go to San Pedro for the steamer out to Santa Catalina Island, enjoy that beautiful spot for a few hours, returrn to LA, have a nice dinner, and turn in for the night The following morning he said he could go to the Santa Fe staton and meet the train that had left Albuquerque over an hour before their flight departed.
It was really that much faster.
It's been said that nostalgia ain't what it used to be,, but this video certainly made me nnotsalgic for my father's TAT stories.

Great video - short story - I am an amateur radio operator and was commuting home in OC a few years ago. Heard the tower and John Wayne comment that a Tri-Motor was on final. Then heard at least 5-6 other pilots come back just wanting to know about the Tri-Motor and were willing to wait to taxi until they saw it. Reverence for the great machine. I have also been to the PS Air Museum - great asset to aircraft history!
