Pete my first 6.2L was a 2010 and it was like pulling teeth with my dealer to bring it in. “You wont want that, too bad on gas. Take one of our 5.3L SLT’s instead “. My friend searched for 2 years to find his, rarest truck ive seen. It was a 2012 6.2L LTZ double cab, but it had the 5’8” box on a DC and not the 6’6” box. Awesome performance platform, but it was stolen and driven into a tree.
Anthony Cee yea that would be a cool race but a 3+ ton truck is not made for drag racing it’s made for pulling and carrying heavy loads. That’s why the f250 has 20 less mph top speed than f150. If a heavy truck goes too fast the axle (stock) could snap unless maybe the owner gets a better axle.
If you own one it will impress you even more. I've had fast diesels all my life and I just sold the 7.3 mod Ford and bought a High Country Silverado 1500 with the 3.0 diesel. The 3.0 diesel is plenty fast for an old man and the fuel mileage is fantastic. Plus the exhaust brake is super.
@@lowboy003 3L diesel definitely has some torque and is definitely a joy to drive. As far as fast, it can briefly break the wheels free if you floor it but it's not really meant for speed. 1500 3L is great for expressway driving and doing infrequent towing. if you want speed get a sports car, if you want to tow get a 2500/3500. if you want to tow light /occasionally, take the family to dinner in a decent truck, get good mpg's and would just like to have something higher off the ground for safety i think the 1500 3L is a great option. It does turn heads too. I personally find the stiffer seats more comfortable but it's a personal preference.
@@SimpleAbundance I just picked up a 2022 Colorado ZR2 Bison in Oregon two weeks ago for the wife with the factory rare off- road AEV kit on it and 2 inches higher than stock Colorados.. It was nearly new and has sat in a garage since the lady bought it. It has low miles and not a mark on it, top or bottom. It had the LWN 2.8 motor for 41K cash. It had a 62K sticker new. The mileage with a light foot on the way home was 28 MPG for 400 miles. We have a couple of 3500 trucks for work with L5P motors, and that's the only way to go for towing anything heavy. But as an old man, my RC 4" lifted High Country 1500 LM2 is a joy to drive, and nothing rides smoother with the real lift kit that gives level-A arms with coil-over shocks. I made the mistake of letting my wife drive it, and she wanted one instead of the VW Golf TDI. The Colorado ZR2 was perfect, and she loves it, but it rides a bit rougher than my lifted High Country.
I just got obsessed watching these videos from last night. I don’t even know anything about pick up trucks but these videos give a whole lot of information and the drag racing with amazing performance figures of these trucks and are no where to be compared to the mid size suv I drive. Thanks a lot for making these videos.
A few model years of the 5.3L V8 suffered with oil consumption issues and problems. GM has a gigantic class action lawsuit on the 8 speed automatic transmission used in full size SUV's and trucks.

FutureRN_Corey _ They are great on gas if you stick with those garbage stock SRA tires but as soon as you put real tires on it takes a dump. I used to get better mileage with my 6.2 8spd than my 5.3 6spd before 33x12.5” on the 6.2.
i had a 2014 gmc sierra with the 5.3 & 6 speed trans....gas mileage was decent...15-16 mpg city...traded it in 2 months ago for a 2020 sierra SLT with the 6.2L & 10 speed trans ..what a difference in power but i didnt know the 6.2 recommended fuel was 93 octane for best performace/mpg....in my area its 60 cents a gallon more and im only getting 13 mpg city now
One of the big advantages of the 6.2 is it usually comes with the max towing package which comes with much lower gear ratios so it really helps acceleration getting up to 60mph. My 6.2 won't hook up at all if I launch in 2wd no matter what (at sea level), but in 4hi I can turn off traction control, stubilitrack, and brake reving to a few thousand rpm and hook up no problem. Easily gets from 0 to 60 in the just over 5 seconds. I switch back into 2hi at about 45mph but I don't know if that really helps at all, or if it is even able to switch back that fast under load. I've only done a couple times and wouldn't do it again though... I don't think any light duty pickup truck is really built for those kinds of forces, and I'd rather not find out...
I was actually surprised in the race between the AT-4 and the 6.2L. I really thought the diesel would get gapped worse than that. I’m sure the turbo helped with the elevation and probably would have been even closer if they were running the same tires! Great content as always
I own a 2014 Chevy Silverado LTZ/4x4 with the 5.3L. Been a great truck. Did a Diablo canned tune on it last summer. It eliminated the "4-cylinder mode", improved shift points, speed limiter deactivation, and "91 performance tune". I have no way of knowing how much more power it has. But, driving it is a blast now. The tires break loose, pedal feel is instant, and it "roars" more (if that makes any sense). Prob still won't win a drag race with the 6.2L, but sure feels uncorked with this canned tune (and more fun!). If I ever sell it, I would def get the 6.2L. But, the 5.3L has a lot of potential to make horsepower
Trevor C really????? Thats a serious time for a truck. Impressive. Its unfortunate the 7.3 doesn’t haul more ass. Its ine of the main reasons i love my 2016 diesel. The endless power
We need to see 0-60 / 40-70 towing videos. The don’t need to be towing a massive amount but maybe 5,000 lbs which would be a typical load for this class. Seeing their stopping abilities loaded would be nice as well.
The 5.3 is an excellent motor. Decent power, not as much as other but it’s gets the job done. They’re also bulletproof as a police vehicle motor. The PPV Tahoe is the most reliable and longest lasting police vehicle in my patrol fleet. The Ford eco boost is quick, but they do not handle the hard driving very well, as most patrol cars endure some HARD driving.
I agree. Most people don't think the 5.3 is a good or impressive engine. You can try to run a 5.3 to the ground but they just keep going. Most people trashing the 5.3 have probably never owned one. The 6.2 is awesome too.
Thank you for the comparison! I just came from a 5.3 GMC to a 3.0 GMC. I felt the 3.0 was quicker but wasn’t sure. I’ve been waiting for the diesel vs gas comparison for a wile now to find out.
I'm good with my 08 Ram Heavy Duty 2500 4/4 Hemi with 105,000 miles. Definitely enough power for me. Runs Excellent. Pulls whatever I need to be pulled.
Downside to the 6.2 is you have to use higher octane fuel to keep up with performance since it’s the same as a camaro motor but de-tuned for more torque. Read it in my Denali owner’s manual about fuel usage between the 5.3 & 6.2.
Yeah, but even then, the regular gas can be safely used. You don't lose much in terms of mpg, even though the power drop is noticeable enough to feel in the seat of your pants
I could be wrong but the last 6.2 Ike Gauntlet Towing test was in 2017! I would love to see the new 6.2 charging up the ike gauntlet! You guys are Awesome!

Nice drag races! I'm liking more and more on 3.0 GM diesel. It runs pretty good. And, it gets great mileage. I didn't think I would ever be thinking diesel, again, but I am...
love my AT4 Diesel in the mountains i was all over a ford rapter and could top hills better. Sure he gets me in 1/4 mile but he is screaming to top hills.
I bought three GMCs at the same time, 2 were 5.3 liters, one was 6.2. The 6.2 ALWAYS gets better mpg than the 5.3's by about 3-4 mpg. I can and do tow a 9000 lb travel trailer with it and get between 7 and 9 mpg. Love my 6.2l.
the 6.2l took the 5.3l to gapplebees! i have the 5.3 and i chose it for price and reliability also i have no need for my truck to be fast and if i needed more towing i wouldve chosen a heavy duty truck. it does everything i need. if anyone reading this is tring to decide which. id suggest cross shopping the 5.3l vs the 3l diesel not the 6.2l if you "need" the 6.2 get a heavy duty
Dj Michael Braaps because TFL acts like the 7.3L is revolutionary. Just helps to point out that Ford is not the first to make a massive displacement gasser motor

The potential is massive compared to those days. I think the "sport truck" and "muscle truck" are gonna have a huge comeback. I mean, look at how many Americans buy trucks these days.
I just traded my 3.0 diesel for the 6.2 gas. The 6.2 is quicker in a drag race but the diesel just feels more powerful 95% of the time and the gas mileage is no comparison. Only reason I got rid of the diesel was reliability issues.

I found it pretty amazing that the 3L GM diesel truck was almost as fast, I mean to the point where it would come down to the driver, as the exhaust modded Ford 7.3 that high above sea level. That's pretty incredible when you think about it, especially considering the severe difference in fuel consumption.
It’s really not that amazing. The 7.3 Ford was a gasser motor, not a power stroke. The massive power to weight ratio was the real killer here. Put a 10,000lb trailer on them and do the test again. Also, just so there’s no confusion, I am by no means a Ford guy, but this comparison is a little out there. I know it’s just fun, but something about apples and oranges.
Hugely helpful... but that duramax in a Yukon Denali for the long family road trips.... getting 725 miles to a tank, in supreme comfort and silence... magic!

The GM engineers do not have a clue on how to build a great 4WD Class 2 (2500) and Class 3 (3500) trucks. Both Ecoboost engines would smoke the 6.2L in a drag race. Small diesels are designed for towing, not drag racing. Hence, gas is quicker, diesel is better for towing.

I have a 2020 chevy v6 diesel, and don't regret. Stereo died once. The diesel mileage when pulling a small motorcycle trailer with a 550 pound motorcycle kills the diesel mileage, I get up to 30 mph without trailer, but with trailer I get 15 to 20 mpg spending on elevation and speed. The trailer is probably 1,000 to 1250 pounds loaded with motorcycle. I expected better mpg pulling a trailer.
The GM 3.0 diesel vs the 6.2 result was exactly as I suspected. Torque affects launch more then top end (evenly matched), horse power affects top end more then launch. 277hp vs 420hp. The diesel got only a slightly better launch. Probably helped by the turbo and the 1500 rpm peak torque. The 6.2 had to wind up before it came to life. As a current 6.2 owner with a 3.0 diesel on order I really enjoyed this video.
@@johnb3231 so far I am very happy with it. I’ve had it about a year and a half, but having a short commute and the Covid lock down it only has a little over 16,000 miles on it. My average mileage since new is 21.86MPG, that is mostly city driving. Highway at the speed I like to travel I get between 26 and 28 MPG. On 55 MPH two lanes without a lot of stop and go, I get just over 30. Mine is 4X4 BTW. Towing my 20’ travel trailer at around 6000lbs I get between 11 and 12.5 on the highway here in relatively flat Michigan. (70 ish MPH) With the 3.0L, 10 speed combo there is little to no noticeable turbo lag off the line. My prior truck was a 2015 with the 6.2L. In comparison it only got 13 mpg city 20 hwy and about 10 towing the same trailer. The only thing it did a little better while towing was foot to the floor acceleration on on ramps. The diesel is not a dog on the on-ramps but the 6.2L spoiled me in that regard. It is my daily driver and it workes great for that. The DEF seams to last a very long time during daily light load driving but it goes rather quick while towing. I normally take extra DEF with me on my camping trips. I hope this helped. Best of luck with your purchase. I hope you don’t have to wait too long for delivery.
Yup sad but ecoboost is faster thats only because the 6.2 is matted to a 3.23 compared to the 3.55 of the ford not a big difference but lets say 3.73 rear in the 6.2 it would be close.
I now own the 6.2 and I can tell you at sea level I can beat the eco boost from a dead stop to 100 the only way it beats me is if they actually break torque and spoil the turbos and even then I’m right there with them and I have the 8 speed racing the new f-150 with the eco boost ten speed
My EcoBoost has a tons of low end torque! But it has no follow up in the high revs. The 6.2 V8s I’ve driven have a lot more top end pull to them. I think I’ll be going back to the V8 next truck but it will likely be a 3/4 with the 7.3....the F-150 is a little to light for what I tow. My favorite truck ever was my last F-150 with the Raptor 6.2.
Diesels preform well in the mountains on the hills at higher altitudes. Of course the gas motor will out drag race the turbo diesel unless you are at 7000 feet elevation. I test drove a 5.3 1500 Silverado and a 3.0 Silverado High Country diesel for a few days in the mountains at 5000 feet up to 9000 feet altitude. In my opinion for people living in the mountains the turbo 3.0 diesel was a way better choice over the 5.3 gas motor both in fuel mileage and torque.

First.....there is absolutely No doubt GM builds GREAT LS engines...old school "push rod" V8 OHV design!!! The Chevrolet Trail Boss and GMC AT4 with the itty bitty little tires are PATHETIC examples of a 4WD truck. Installing a high lift for large tires to clear the wheel well increases the "center of gravity!" There is no question larger tires can and do improve the off-road capability and prowess of a 4WD truck. However, a MODERATE lift is much preferred over a HIGH lift...with the exception of a 4WD truck being used in high water. Moreover......for several years, GM engineers have been playing with the "proverbial round peg in a square hole" by placing a round rim and tire in a square / rectangle wheel well. This greatly inhibits / prevents the installation of larger / taller tires with a MODERATE amount of lift.....which is not the case with Ford and Dodge 4WD trucks. The GM engineers do not have a clue on how to build a great 4WD Class 2 (2500) and Class 3 (3500) trucks. The Chevrolet and GMC 4WD trucks with IFS axle have very poor axle articulation resulting in inadequate wheel travel + low hanging frames with poor "breakover angle" = stuck truck.....due to no front tire traction and "high center" on uneven terrain in mud and snow off-road. the diesel advantage is it can be tuned, boosted, modified and still maintain reliability. A 6.7 with a silver bullet turbo can turn 800 hp and 600+ ft #'s and still get 24 mpg.
That was fun, thanks I enjoyed it. I have a 2017 6.2 SIERRA SLT CREW, that I'm or have added exhaust, cold air kit, leveling, air bags, and hope a Supercharger & bigger front binders. This 8 speed is a blast to drive. Oh yeah, it's cheaper than a diesel to operate @ 25mpg. Thanks for certification.
The AT4X is way outside my budget...but how do the AT4 hold up with city driving (3.0 vs 5.3)? My commute is a maximum of 10 miles, but is 100% city. I do some highway driving time to time but primarily suburban USA. I currently own a 2023 Tundra (8,500 mi). I love the truck, but the premature engine failures have me concerned. Dealers aren't even accepting 22/23 trades because of the issue and toyota dealerships can't sell impacted inventory until their is a fix. I bought the extended warranty because i planned to have this 15 years but not if an engine blows!

When can we see drag racing between the ford 7.3, Chevy 6.6 and the ram 6.4 ???? We are waiting!!!!!
Anthony Cee that would be a better Race
Anthony Cee yea that would be a cool race but a 3+ ton truck is not made for drag racing it’s made for pulling and carrying heavy loads. That’s why the f250 has 20 less mph top speed than f150. If a heavy truck goes too fast the axle (stock) could snap unless maybe the owner gets a better axle.
Cool Pizzo
How would the axle snap because of speed?
Cool Pizzo tfl has raced dually diesel trucks recently. Also f150 has same topspeed as f250.... about 100-105 mph

I want to see a at4 diesel compete with another at4 with the 6.2 it would be exactly the matchup I’m looking for

The 5.3 is quicker than the Diesel at sea level.
3.0 is definitely faster, I had both!

Sincere question. Why?
Everyone acts like the Ford 7.3L gasser is insanely big. Did we forget that GM had a 8.1L back in the day?

It's very tunable because it's turbo, the 6.2 is what it is
@@thomgt4 The 6.2 has a lot of room for tuning. It's built for longevity more than power.

Buy the Ford.....not so much because of the great 7.3L gas engine...but because Ford.....and Dodge know how to build great 4WD trucks.
GM trucks stuck off-road.
I have seen this scenario play out numerous times in the Rocky mountain states!
GM builds little girl "car like" grocery getting trucks! Ford and Dodge build brute man tough trucks that are capable of performing tough truck tasks on both paved highways and off-road in the mud and snow. In short......Chevrolet and GMC trucks are junk!!!

It went as it should. The GMC diesel started off strong the the 6.2 caught up and passed on by. Diesels designed for low rpm torque.
Andre, how did you think the 5.3 would stand a chance to the 6.2?
The GM 3.0 diesel vs the 6.2 result was exactly as I suspected. Torque affects launch more then top end (evenly matched), horse power affects top end more then launch. 277hp vs 420hp. The diesel got only a slightly better launch. Probably helped by the turbo and the 1500 rpm peak torque. The 6.2 had to wind up before it came to life. As a current 6.2 owner with a 3.0 diesel on order I really enjoyed this video.
Are you happy with the 3.0 diesel? I'm about to order one but can't find one to test drive. Looking at it mainly for fuel efficiency

I now own the 6.2 and I can tell you at sea level I can beat the eco boost from a dead stop to 100 the only way it beats me is if they actually break torque and spoil the turbos and even then I’m right there with them and I have the 8 speed racing the new f-150 with the eco boost ten speed
6.2 awesome power! Sierra c3 the Denali and now Silverado. Bravo!
The 5.3 sounds smoother running compared to 6.3

Diesels preform well in the mountains on the hills at higher altitudes. Of course the gas motor will out drag race the turbo diesel unless you are at 7000 feet elevation. I test drove a 5.3 1500 Silverado and a 3.0 Silverado High Country diesel for a few days in the mountains at 5000 feet up to 9000 feet altitude. Barley is a grain not a leaf lol, and why does it matter if it’s turbocharged? The gm is 6.2 liters vs 3.5, obviously it’s going to need boost. And it works quite well spanking all the other brands in terms of performance.
@@randythomas9052 Yes and it costs more. The 3.5 is a small engine, it's not made to handle high loads. That's why the GM can tow more. I'd rather have a V8 for the extra punch and the sound is so much better. Sorry for the barley mistake.

How is the power with the 5.3 with the 10 speed combo. I see a lot of people internet bashing it. I have driven my father-in-law’s ford eco boost 3.5 4x4 with the ten speed and was pretty impressed. I have not driven the trail boss yet. I just want some power to pass or get out of the way of people on the road. I will not be doing a lot of towing. Anybody out there owned a ford with the 10 speed with 5.0 or 3.5 eb then moved to 5.3 trail boss???
I have the 5.3 at4 10 speed and it drives beautifully. 0to 60 in 7.5 seconds on 2 wheel drive sport mode traction control off. 10 speed really helps the truck get up and go. Does everything better than avg on regular gas. Very happy with it.
AT4’s look so beautiful
Agreed. Too bad interior look like 10 years old
Just picked up a 21 GMC sierra denali with the 3.0L duramax, and she's a hell of a truck. Comming from the big daddy Duramax in a 2500 I'm very impressed. Great vid guys as usual, but this is just wicked fun and real world use.
This is exactly the video i wanted to watch
just traded in my 2017 6.2L F250 for a 1500 GMC AT4 black widow 6.2L........the AT4 is MUCH faster. Obviously the 250 was more of a beast hauling wise, but the AT4 is nice. Im happy with the trade
That 3.0 duramax is amazing, I went out and test drove one after watching the TFL/AT4 video yesterday.
every video of people who bought one has had overheating problems
Yes its impressive my next truck 4 sure! But I'd wait for 2nd gen! 1st gen will have issues.
I have one and love it no issues here!
@@Vetteman6363 maybe lucky TK's Garage truck had problems at 146 miles
gulf city peterbilt confederacy 379 it’ll be fine it’s an inline 6 what could go wrong
So glad I bought the 6.2L AT4, great truck!
6.2 silverado cant beat the 3.5 ecoboost
Victor Hernandez It dose in longevity
Never
Something sounded wrong with that ram eco diesel at the end of the video. 15:06
If it's anything like the last generation diesels in the 1500's it's probably having emissions issues already.
RegU L8 it’s a ram, to be expected...
Mud on the tires
@regu Just mud flinging off the tires and hitting the fenders.
Should've brought Kent's F-150 Ecoboost that would've whipped em all!
Yeah I don’t think so buddy
Cory Dean a stock F-150 3.5 Ecoboost with a tune on 93 gas is good for a 4.6 second 0-60. Use E50 and it drops to under 4 seconds. E85 tune with an upgraded fuel pump (everything still stock) will run a 11.60 quarter mile.
I thought we were assuming everything was stock like in this video guy. Of course if you start tuning everything it changes. Yeah man if you bring in my 5.3 with the new cam I put in it and yaddda yadda it will beat everything here. What a joker
Also I guess I don’t know who Kent is...
Cory Dean it’s already proved the stock Ecoboost is the quickest though. Also, keeping everything stock (no mechanical changes) with just a tune the Ecoboost is leaps ahead followed by the 6.2.
lmfao those 6.2 lifters finna leave the chat
Would love the see how that little Ford 2.7L EB in a Super Crew would so against the 6.2L.
At altitude it's a drives race. At sea level it's the 6.2s race to lose
Someone else noticed, the 6.2 Chevrlotet it's not Crew Cab?, less weight can affect the rsults?
Take that FORD and shove it up CHEVY’S tail pipe.🤙🤙🤙
An intake, exhaust, and premium fuel on the 5.3 makes a huge difference. But I am at sea level.
And programmer/tune. Check mine out
You are right. I have a 2015 double cab 4x4. It has 3.42 gears and 33 inch tires. I have a cold air intake a diablosport tuner and dual exhaust with an x pipe. Mine is pretty quick. It keeps up with 5.7 chargers and challengers
@@ericvortecmax that's awesome! Mine is a 2016 double cab with 33s. Afe intake, bullydog (running 91) and corsa sport cat back. I've pissed off alot of hemi owners. Haha and I get better fuel economy now than when it was stock.
@james avery is that a custom tune I can download on my bullydog?
james avery work for 19 models?
Muchas gracias por el video, sois los mejores.
Could you guys do a race between the Chevy 6.2 and a standard F150 “ not a raptor “with the 6.2?
Really, an off-road trail boss vs a street truck. I'm sure a 6.2 and 5.3 in similar trims is close.
Not really. You'll maybe gain a half second with 5.3.
Closer but not much
d c I own a 2020 trail boss with the 6.2 and it’s a beast
@@843OutdoorsSC They should rate all v8 engines below 6.0L with donkey power lmao!
In short......Chevrolet and GMC 4WD trucks are junk!!!
the diesel advantage is it can be tuned, boosted, modified and still maintain reliability. A 6.7 with a silver bullet turbo can turn 800 hp and 600+ ft #'s and still get 24 mpg.
Love these drag race videos you guys. But when you list the power numbers. Would love it if you also included the curb weight and rear axle ratio.
Recreational towing. 8500 trailer when filled up. Mainly city driving. Wanting 4x4. 3.0 duramax or 6.2?
That was fun, thanks I enjoyed it. I have a 2017 6.2 SIERRA SLT CREW, that I'm or have added exhaust, cold air kit, leveling, air bags, and hope a Supercharger & bigger front binders. This 8 speed is a blast to drive. Oh yeah, it's cheaper than a diesel to operate @ 25mpg. Thanks for certification.
Picking up my new 6.2 this week can't wait
Great video guys, fun and informative! Keep up the good work!
Would love to know who wins between the 3.0 babyMax vs the 5.3L engine.
Because they already know F150 2.7L=6.98/ 3.5L EB=6.60 (watch on TFL)
Chevy lucky Ford didn't give you a Limited F150 . Come on Ford.
I have a ‘23 AT4 with the I6 diesel - great truck! But I drive 76 miles round trip a day. I average 28 mpg - crazy! But you need to run diesels and not short trip them. If only shorties then get petrol….
