Hello Kevin, watching your videos and receiving your input on the past week has been helping me a lot. However I've encountered another problem. The STL I'm working on was made in sketchup, and my model is not the same size as the original file when I insert it. For example in height it should be 32", but when I open the stl it says 12.73". I read a little bit about this issue being the fact that fusion360 doesn't really work with units, but I don't quite understand how to fix it. Do you mention this in any of your videos, what do you suggest?
Hi, Some Lilliputian. Did you upload the file to your data panel or use the insert mesh command? STL files are do not have units, meaning the file doesn't contain a unit measurement along with the rest of the file's data. The best way to create a design in Fusion 360 that contains a mesh is not to use "upload", instead do this: 1. Download the file from other program/website 2. Start a new Fusion 360 file and use the Insert > Mesh command from the Insert menu. 3. Pick mm units in the insert dialog. (or whatever units provide the correct result) 4. Save the file, it is now a Fusion 360 design, containing a mesh that is scaled to the right proportions (which is what you were trying to achieve by using "upload"). The difference is that Upload assumes all unitless files (.stl or .obj) are made with CM units, and Insert Mesh allows you to pick the units. Cheers, Kevin :)

I am a mechanical engineering student and I have a product design project using Gen AI and I need information about the algorithms, model and libraries that I can use in this jste project to start my first step in the project and thank you very much
hello! I'm new to generative design in Autodesk fusion and I wanted to ask, if I still have to use "cloud points" if I have the educational subscription? Thanks for this great tutorial!
Have you ever used ParaMatters/CogniCAD Generative design? I've been using it a bit today for a motorcycle bar clamp design. Pretty cool and intuitive software, though my first two attempts at it were rough. First one barely removed any material because of a boundary condition error, and the second attempt basically cut everything away except the "non-design" (basically the preserve) features... Fairly positive that these results are due to me setting up the BCs and loads incorrectly.
Hi Marinus. If you're on the free Personal Use license then Generative Design is not available anymore. They offered it for free at the end of 2019 as kind of an "end of the year" bonus. It's now only available one education licenses and commercial licenses.
@@ProductDesignOnline Ah, and the educational license can only be used on the academy's network, which is now closed due to the corona virus :) I work at an art academy but can't use fusion from there sadly. Well, I guess it'll be just a technical design then ;)
Is it possible to make a generative design in Fusion 360 of a organic design that act as a custom mandible implant? with the goal to reduce material but substain the forces involved in a human mandible(75 Pounds).
Without having full context, that sounds like it's better suited for Topology Optimization in the Simulation Workspace. The difference is that you start with the existing geometry (or existing product design) and the software will subtract all of the un-needed material based on the forces/things you input. With Generative Design, it would be a challenge to get a feasible shape (based on what I'm seeing with a few Google searches).
@@ProductDesignOnline thank you for answering. I was thinking the same, looks like it is better suited for a topological optimization. For a little more context; half of a mandible including the condyle need to be cut and a custom titanium(additive manufacturing) prosthesis need to be designed. We need to reduce material to reduce the cost. Thanks again!
Hi, Lindsey. Thanks for watching/commenting. That is correct, all 4 of the new license types will have the Generative design option as they've been migrated to the new system. Any users who are still using the "old" Startup license (until their license term ends) will not be able to access Generative Design. Cheers, Kevin :)
Hi, Srihari. It depends on what license type you have. If you're on an Education account then you can use it for free (with some limitations). Otherwise, most other accounts require cloud credits.

Hi, Derron. From what I hear/know, running it local won't be feasible. The folks at Autodesk claim it takes too much computing power and wouldn't be feasible unless you had a "super computer" or a bunch of servers. There are a handful of standalone Generative Design tools. Although, I'm not sure if any of them are free or have a free trial. Check out page 5 of this PDF - bit.ly/generativeDesign Cheers, Kevin :)
Hi, Bill. No worries! Generative Design is really only useful in mass-manufacturing where parts savings can total large sums (typically millions). Nonetheless, it doesn't hurt to get a high-level overview to know what it is and to recognize parts out there. Cheers, Kevin :)
Yes. It's available in edu. Make sure your Fusion is updated and generative should be available. They have also updated the sample/tutorial parts with a generative bracket from a traditional bracket.

The difference is that Upload assumes all unitless files (.stl or .obj) are made with CM units, and Insert Mesh allows you to pick the units.
Cheers, Kevin :)
@@ProductDesignOnline Thank you so much, I'll be trying this tomorrow. :)
Yes, I'm just hearing about it now
Of course, YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for watching, JG Kim! Glad to see some excitement around Generative Design. Fingers are crossed they add some cloud credits to the Personal Use license or extend the "free period". Cheers, Kevin :)
I am a mechanical engineering student and I have a product design project using Gen AI and I need information about the algorithms, model and libraries that I can use in this jste project to start my first step in the project and thank you very much
Thank you so much for the wonderful tutorial. But how long it takes to generate.
The time really depends on the design and the amount of filters/restrictions you have in place for each GD Study.
hello,
Is there a way to get the generative design extension for free for this month, even for a very limited date?
thanks for your supports.
hello! I'm new to generative design in Autodesk fusion and I wanted to ask, if I still have to use "cloud points" if I have the educational subscription? Thanks for this great tutorial!
EDU license does allow you to run GD studies without paying. This can/may change in the future, but last I checked it was still true :)
Yes! Of course 😊
Thanks for watching, vladomie! Glad to see you're on board! Cheers, Kevin :)
Was the voice over made with generative voice syntheses?
Yes absolutely
Thanks for commenting, zwazi09! Cheers, Kevin :)
Why do you select the outer faces of the preserved geometry as fixed? Shouldn't the inner faces be fixed since the bolts are being placed there?
That whole section will be fixed, so selecting either side will provide the same results.
Yes! I want more time to learn it.
Agreed...just over a month is barely enough time to scratch the surface. Cheers, Kevin :)
Thanks, Connor. I remember hearing about this a while back...but never spent the time to check it out. I'm going to give it a try :)
@@ProductDesignOnline Sweet! You should be able to get some free tokens by clicking on their COVID challenge right now!
This is a fantastic tutorial, still in 2022
Too advanced for where I’m at, but fun too explore and see how powerful the program is.
Oh wow, I'm so going to use this for my new design. Oh wait, no, did they disable it now?...
Well, I guess it'll be just a technical design then ;)
Did they extend? I hope so :') BTW 2 days left for the Autodesk Uni
Yes, of course!
Please give more videos in generative design sir.
My newly upgraded Startup Licence includes Generative Design.
Oh, thanks for great presentation.

Nice video but is generative design is now free or we have to buy and pay cloud credits .
Hi, Srihari. It depends on what license type you have. If you're on an Education account then you can use it for free (with some limitations). Otherwise, most other accounts require cloud credits.
@@ProductDesignOnline thanks for replying me but I think educational license doesnt have access to generative design bcz mine is a educational license and cant access generative design

I'm alright until about 10 minutes in where you are showing the load bearing constraints for the rings, it's not showing lbs it's showing degrees.
Hmmm. could you link to a screenshot so I can see what you are? (you can use a link for Google Drive, dropbox, snipboard.io, or similar...)
I really hope Autodesk allow us to use generative design for free on local computer . Does anyone know any good free stand alone generative design software? @Product Design Online
Check out page 5 of this PDF - bit.ly/generativeDesign
Cheers, Kevin :)
For the first time (watching your tutorials) I am completely confused. I think GD is not for me. Thanks for trying.
Hi, Bill. No worries! Generative Design is really only useful in mass-manufacturing where parts savings can total large sums (typically millions). Nonetheless, it doesn't hurt to get a high-level overview to know what it is and to recognize parts out there. Cheers, Kevin :)
Is there any way to do this on an Education License?
Yes. It's available in edu. Make sure your Fusion is updated and generative should be available. They have also updated the sample/tutorial parts with a generative bracket from a traditional bracket.
@@shirothehero0609 Do you have edu licence? I've updated to latest but it is not showing in workspace menu
Hi, Uģis Albiņš. I've found out that it must be on of the 200 schools that is considered an Autodesk "Partner" School. The rest of the EDU licenses will not be moved over to Generative Design until the new year 2020. However, supposedly, they're supposed to then give access to generative design to all students for free. Cheers, Kevin :)

Damn if they are doing this then it wont be long before a computer can write a book. I have written 10 books on Amazon. Basically then the next step is full ai.
Ok I like seeing options and then working from them. Only surely it takes away the skill of a designer. Only need this if you are suffering the equivalent to writers block.
Good video Kevin
Fortunately, I think this will have many limitations for years where the Designer or Engineer will still need to be very hands on. I will revisit this comment in ten years so we can reflect on how automated Fusion 360 is...to see if we're still needed at the keyboard or not :)

Hey Kevin,
i tried to get access to generative design, but Autodest wouldn´t allow me to use this item. I am a student from Cologne Germany and currently working on my bachelor thesis. the topic for my thesis is generative design.
I wonder if you know more about the ability to use generative design in other countries like germany.
I also contacted the support but they tould me i am not allowed to use it with my study licence.
@@lennartborgfeldt Hi Lennart. From what I heard... Autodesk said that Generative Design will only be available to the "200 Partner Schools" with the education license. Next year it is supposed to eventually roll out to all education license types. In the meantime, so that you can work on your thesis, I would recommend signing up for a separate Personal Use license, which will give you access to Generative Design for the rest of the year. You will need to create a second Autodesk account with another email (your personal email). Then, simply follow the steps that I have outlined on this page - productdesignonline.com/tips-and-tricks/how-to-download-and-install-the-fusion-360-personal-use-license/

Too bad it wasn't made available for the EDU-accounts. Its usually among students that you find new potential customers. :-)
Hi, Schack Lindemann. The Generative Design is available to Education Licenses with all 200 of the Autodesk "Partner Schools". With that said, I've heard that they have plans of making Generative Design free for all EDU licenses in 2020 (we'll have to wait to see).
In the meantime, you'll have to sign up for a free Personal Use license to give Generative Design a try. Cheers, Kevin :)
Thanks for the heads up. Sadly we are not a "Partner School" but maybe we could be. I'll ask AutoDesk. I'll see what happens in 2020. :-)

It was free (for all licenses) during the period this video was made. You can still access free on the Education license.
Is there a real guy speaking in this or is it an ai generated voice?
