  • Is it quicker to drive or fly? Driving to the airport, preflight, airport congestion and commuting from the destination airport all add to the total trip time for a flight. With all of that, will you still get to your destination quicker than driving?

Now that was a video I really enjoyed !! I liked how you timed it from "door to door". Another idea is have a "pretend" corporate owner who owns an airplane but he hires a pilot to fly the aircraft. Calculate the door to door time for this hypothetical corporate owner who shows up to an airplane READY to go - preflight is done and all the owner has to do is jump in and fly away. This would demonstrate the advantages of aircraft ownership from a business owner's perspective. I used to work as an airliner mechanic at Love Field {Dallas} and on average 2 or 3 times a week I saw a Cirrus get preflighted and fueled up then the actual owner would show up and proceed to the rear seat and a minute later the engine roars to life, and 7 minutes later they are climbing out on 13L or 31R. Now if that owner lived nearby like say University Park, he could leave his house and in less than 15 minutes be sitting in the back seat of his Cirrus. And hypothetically if that is true, I'm willing to bet that he could beat SWA to 80% of the destinations if you go by door to door time. In fact, I'm willing to bet, this guy I used to watch fly away in his Cirrus, that many of his trips he would arrive at the destination before the SWA jet even got in the air. If you were to have an "apples to apples" door to door race - and that's another thing you could do is find a friend taking a medium trip on an airline and "race" him - airliner verses Diamond Star. You just don't see many aviation videos doing this "racing "thing. But one thing is to make the race valuable to obtain a fair comparison, the car driver should agree to drive the speed limit. Otherwise the results will be "skewed".

Hey, how are you? I just heard in this video that you're from Morrisville? I'm going to be in Raleigh on Saturday, October 14th, to Sunday. If you're in town, maybe we could meet up. I will be driving there Saturday afternoon from CHS.

I live in Mooresville (north of Charlotte). You are not the first one to swap those two. So, I am about 4 hours away but, I will be in Charleston Oct 25-27 on a golf trip with a few friends. Maybe we can hook up then.

Very nice video!! If I may ask, what was your cruise altitude for this flight? GREAT landing as well!!

I went back to check the altitude. It looks like 7,500' was my cruise altitude. The analog backup altimeter is set incorrectly because it reads 300' at KEDE which has an elevation of 19'. The center digital Mini 6 has become my primary backup so, I must have forgotten to set the analog altimeter somewhere along the way. I assume that is what you saw that led to your question. Good catch!

Why r u flying in the right side of the cockpit?

As a CFI, I spend most of my time in the right seat. So, I have become more comfortable flying from that side. I fly left seat on occasion just to stay proficient.
