This Empire style chair originates from some Russian 19'th century palace. At this time there were many good furniture makers in Russia. The exact origin is unfortunately unknown.

@@evasanz3466 I have one more chair from this set. I thought I must put some of it inside the new upholstery for future restorer to discover. This chair also gets properly catalogued by its owner.
Am voting for you🥰my favorite restorator👍
Voted for all. Thank you for introducing some of us to these creators.
I love how, even Master Craftsman that you are, you are not afraid to show yourself learning new techniques and trying out new skills. It’s inspiring.
Did anyone else hold their breath when he was putting the gold leaf on... beautiful restoration
Me too ❤. That's wonderful
Yes, I couldn't help myself 😜
yes - so much! I have only used Aluminum leaf before as I prefer silver tones for the items I've done (and I don't want to waste money by being bad with real silver) - I was getting proper flashbacks with every waft!
Yep
I'm not sure if I held my breath--exactly. But when he said he held his, I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation. I didn't want to miss any of the gold leafing part of the video!
One thing I really like is how quiet the video is. Calm, not distracting from the craft.
It saves you from turning the volume down.
You astound me with how calm you are. I have only used gold leaf on small simple projects and I went nuts.
That was stunning
Yes so relaxing.
Any 19th century aristocrat would be very fortunate to have you as an artisan!
What a time to be alive! I couldn't be more grateful for the internet to allow me to watch this restoration. Thank you for sharing this piece of art that your restorations are
1300 euros in gold and fabric. When you were cutting it, my heart stopped. But your hand didn't slip! Wow! Bravo!
I know you are a master craftsman, with years of experience, but when I watch your videos, I feel like I am watching a magician at work!!😍❤️
Agreed!!

I totally agree.
I missed this when the competition actually happened because my husband was very ill, so my vote doesn't count now, but another amazing transformation from our quiet friend. Bravo. 😊🇨🇦
That chair is a bona-fide piece of history. What a find!
Oh. My. God! The skill and patience to do all that gilding... I am absolutely floored!! What an amazing restoration!!
I hope the owner puts the original fabric into a glass frame.
I 've recently been to an antique fabric and carpet exhibition. Even fragments nicely presented are pleasant to look at.
Im giving you the title of Doctor, because what you perform is delicate, restorative surgery on furniture at a level that is on par with surgeons.
I was used guilt leaf in an art class. Not gold, not a large project (might have been a picture frame) and my hands were still shaking at the cost. This restoration was masterwork.
That was a gorgeous restoration, Ahti. Beautifully done and ready for the next 200 years.
He pulled out all the stops. But was the original fabric Asian silk? That would have been spectacular.
Is the specific origin of the chair known?
Too bad about the solid green… beautifully restored though!
@@brassbunnies Agree, that let the whole (otherwise amazing) restoration a bit down for me. I was expecting he would use some fabric similar to the original one, which made the chair look like it was all golden. I think that was the original maker's idea actually. The green velvet is nice, but with it the chair looks more common and cheaper.
@@dinovolla9999he mentioned that the client paid for it, so perhaps it was the client's choice as well. I for one liked it, it seems befitting to the majestic nature of the chair , especially with the gold.
You have skill and knowledge that is dying out in the modern world. Your restoration and upholstery is of a very high standard. What a pleasure to have watched your video I enjoyed every moment. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is by far the most beautiful restoration of a piece of furniture from a master working class man. Great job on this piece of art.
I click on the thumbs up before I even watch your videos because I know it’s going to be great!
The upholstery and gold leaf would have turned me away from such a project. Quite the skills you have developed in this modern world of paint and memory foam. Beautiful work!!
Wow! This should be in a museum. The green and gold is a great combination.
Unfortunately I fear it will be at a private residence given the cost.
This will always be the Number One RUclips Channel for furniture restorations!
However, the winner has to be the viewers, watching your magician like skills as you work your magic 👏👏👏👏
Heck, I was holding my breath while you applied the gold leaf! That stuff is so fragile: a person my husband built a house for wanted gold leaf applied in a skylight dome. The exercise in putting the gold leaf on in that application would make your hair fall out. I can't imagine doing something like this! The old upholstery looked like it was silk. Such a fragile looking piece, but your firm handling was just right. An absolutely absorbing video: I always look forward to you videos and learn so much. Thank You!
Well, so far i have liked 2 videos in the "competition"...
I have no doubt i will like the other 2 as well.
So... I will not be a deciding vote... but the truth is that WE, the viewers, are the true winners. We get to enjoy all this amazing work!
Thanx, Ahti!
This restoration was truly breathtaking!
Painstaking work with the gold leaf. And you are a master with the traditional upholstery.
А стул то краденый из дворца в России!
@@marinacherches9070I knew someone was going to make this comment. I’d love to know who stole this chair… or maybe it was brought abroad by defectors.

I will never get bored of watching how the springs are being tied 😊
Wow! This is stunning! It looks like it belongs at Versailles now. Beautiful craftsmanship, gold leafing and upholstery professionally done and love the trim. Very impressive 👏👏👏
Wow, that’s a nice chair…. Imagine having a whole set
It never ceases to amaze me on how someone will do a sloppy job in restoring an antique piece of furniture. This is one of the main reasons i watch the channels that i do. You guys know what you're doing and do it well because you take the time to learn the proper techniques. If my grandmother was alive still she would have enjoyed this video immensely! The reason for that is because she started doing upholstery as her way of paying the bills. when i was born i spent so much time at her house just sitting there watching her work in fascination. It is an amazing thing to see!
I just wish she was able to see you work. She passed just shy of her 101st birthday. God rest her soul. She did this work for just over 80 years before she stopped.
This chair turned out absolutely stunning. I hope it goes home with someone who takes special good care of her.
@@celardoorhorse i was blessed
This is my first time watching does he ever talk?
@@kendrapetrick649 some. Not like other channels
One reason some restoration is not truly a restoration is because it is very expensive. I ask my customer, do you want it restored, or do you want it reupholstered only. The cost difference can be thousands of dollars.
Beautifully done ❤.
Imagine a woman in 19 th century gown sitting in that tiny chair!
Incredible craftmanship!
Truly a master at these restorations. I saw this kind of chair in Catherine the Great’s Summer Palace near St Petersburg. I hope you win. Personally I’d have liked to see the upholstery done in silk, but the velvet is beautiful. 👏👏
Wonderful work Ahti! That gold leaf looks very challenging to work with. I love watching your upholstery work, that's great!
Thanks Scott!
You sure give this chair the Midas touch! 😂 lots of finicky work. 👍👍👍
Homeboy casually just BECAME a 19th c palace chair craftsmen. For materials cost only. I’m in awe.
I am so pleased to see you wearing a Band-Aid! I couldn’t understand how you could do all that fine work with unblemished hands. Lovely work again Ahti!
Well, I watched them all, and I'm back. This chair is just STUNNING. The level of detail and care is beyond compare. Thank you for another great restoration.
The historical accuracy of your work is again, the best I've seen on RUclips and an example of true restoration. A video like this should be required viewing for upcoming content creators. Fantastic job, and best of luck with the competition!
With a staple gun and hot glue?
I mean, obviously he was not trying to do a historically accurate repair, just trying to get the chair stable and looking more or less historically accurate. And he was doing the work for free. So I can see using staples rather than tacks, as they are faster and hold about as well. (Maybe? They probably rust faster, and possibly cut through the fabric in time?) Now, the hot glue most casual crafters might use would probably not hold up over time, and that trim might peel off fairly easily. But there are lots of different formulations of hot glue, and some are very durable, though I don’t know if they would be considered “archival”. Certainly hot glue sticks like that would not be historically accurate. But, he did achieve the goal of restoring the chair to working order and making it beautiful.
Hey @oscaraglio3305 waive👋 I also thought of Julian @BaumgartnerRestoration when I saw the staples😉
Absolutely exquisite work and the Russian chair is gorgeous .. Russian furniture is beautiful and it does not get the credit in the design world it deserves.. Thankfully someone with your extraordinary talent and restoration skills still exist to restore some of these historic and beautiful pieces. My daughter in law is Russian and from Moscow. She and her family are well educated and beautiful people with an appreciation for their Russian culture, which is outstanding in all the Arts.. Another outstanding restoration to your credit... Bravo....Your talent and skills are outstanding and obviously taught by a Master craftsman,,,
Gave my vote for you magic work and for magic work Russian masters. Thank you very much, you are magician ❤❤❤
I always love seeing you tackle a new medium like gold leaf Ahti and you aced it, even though the process looked nerve wracking 😮! The shape of the chair seat upholstered looked perfect. Thank you for another interesting and enjoyable video. So glad these exist so those in the future can see how it’s done by a master.
Love watching your amazing craftsmanship at work! You are meticulous and honor your trade. You win hands down!! Stunning restoration ❤❤❤
While I may never finish a chair like this in my lifetime it is truly rewarding to see the transformation by a skilled craftsman. Thank you for sharing.
A single 'golden' chair might be ok for a hallway piece as decor but my guess is this chair would have been part of a [dining?] set for either the ridiculously wealthy or royalty. Beautiful resto!
Amazing once again. You never disappoint..❤
What a beautiful result for a delightful chair design! Your skill level suits the original design. May I ask the type of wood it was made from? It's a delicate-looking chair, but such a deceptively strong design! Your excellent skills lead to the beautiful results. I especially like how you created a polisher for the legs with a drill! Brilliant! My only disappointment: I wish you could have used a fabric similar to the original silk, which, in my humble opinion, suits the delicacy of the chair. I love how the old materials are ecologically friendly, just requiring a much more skilled artist. Thank you for sharing.
I agree. The (silk) dark green velvet seemed a bit to heavy for such an elegant design. I would have preferred a soft coloured floral silk. But otherwise a true triumph! ❤
I can see a Romanov sitting in that chair! Wonderful craftsmanship!
Incredible work! I do have to mention I think the four channels all did amazing in their respective corners. I don’t mean to say they are unmatched with you in the literal sense but rather I find the other three are a very different style of video. Would have been nice/better maybe to match up more ASMR style videos like yours, as I see a lot of people complaining about them all talking too much. But teaching is literally what their channels are for. They aren’t chit chatting about the weather. lol They are talking about what they are doing and why. Just seems like the styles are quite unmatched with THIS style of video. But I enjoyed all of them, in different ways. I dunno. My two cents.
Oops one more thing- I am in AWE of the amount of patience this chair took. You really do top level work
Incredible job transforming this into a gem. I tried gilting once, and was frustratingly hard to do. Admire your patience to get such a great look. Had no idea how complicate the upholstery could be. Cudos for that. Competition, no. You all did great projects.
In my humble opinion, you sir are an artist.I can't vote for a particular video, i like all of them that i have seen.Beautiful work!
In 2018 I had a heart attack, two young cardiac doctors stented my aorta, back in recovery they came in to tell me that I had beat the Widow Maker --- my smart ass said "No contest, I'm not married!" --- I now say to you NO CONTEST! Your attention to technic and detail wins hand down!
BEAUTIFUL work!♥ And I love the quietness ...so that the concentration is all on the work! Bravo!😊
Magnificent work once again. The gold leaf application must have been so stressful. Thanks for another exhibition of your incredible talents.
Really lovely to watch it come back to life. The old romantic in me would like to have seen a small piece of the original fabric being left inside
If I found this in time you would have had my vote Ahti. You are an artist beyond compare. What a beautiful job putting all the gold leaf on!!! I held my breath while you did it. Trena is good but you, Ahti are great. Your attention to detail is amazing. Thank you for sharing your work with us.
Wow, just wow. Beautiful job.
Beautiful chair. Fascinating process.
Aside from the brilliant work shown here, the audio was really fitting and enjoyable also! I let the video play to the very very end.
I could not decide about who was best. I liked all for each of your own skills and vision. So, I cancelled my own vote. Still, so elegant!
Absolutely Beautiful!
So beautiful! I love that green with the gold.
You did a great job, it look like a chair that came out from a Pharaoh tomb, very beautiful piece of art.
I don't know if I have watched one of your videos before but you are an artist, all I can say is Wow.
Amazing job..! The chair looks really special once again.
That velvet💗the gold leaf 💗the craftsmanship💗. It's gorgeous
I got a bit nervous when I saw you applying shellac that this was going to be a "shabby chic" pseudo-restoration. Boy am I relieved. This is magnificent!
A fine restoration. Love the colour with the gold leaf.
Extraordinary work and a true pleasure to see you transforming this piece.
I love Gold Leafing. And the best thing is when your finished it’s so pretty !
Brilliant. You gave that chair back it's dignity.
Both your gilded masterpiece and Trina's country antique are outstanding pieces of restoration, in strikingly different ways.
You show more care in the details than the original artisan! 😻
1 down 3 to go, i gave a thumbs up but i give all of you a thumbs up. you scored in my opinion a 9. keep up the good work.
Beautiful! The original fabric must have been gorgeous, but the green velvet suits the chair just as well.
Gosh heyyy, aristocracy had small bums, i can't fit on that!!! 😂 luckily I'm no aristocrat
Exquisite work. Absolutely beautiful😊
Какая качественная реставрация, смотрю и не могу оторваться 👍❤😍
I love your videos. I also watch Transcend Furniture Gallery. It's great that you are all connected internationally. In my opinion, this is what the internet was supposed to be about. You each make appealing videos for different niches. Excellent job with this one.
So beautifully done. You are a true artist.
It's such a beautiful, delicate chair & you have done a superb job!!! 😊❤
Whoever owns this chair took it to the right person to have restored! You do a beautification beyond excellence!😊
Wow, what a stunning result! The velvet is worth every cent.
Much awaited, much appreciated excellent work as always from you.
what a lovely, tiny, graceful chair. Spectacular gold leaf. beautiful job as always. Thanks for bringing us along.
The joy is mutual!
Stunning! So glad I was sent here by the competition.
noticed that I held my breath when you put the gold on the eagle head. Incredible elegant piece of work
Spectacular work - as usual.

Рад посмотреть на работу мастера
Binge watching all competitors and, as usual, your work is simply superior. Don't exactly know why, but that's the way it is for me. Thanks for uploading this awesome video.
Очень кропотливая работа! Результат, как всегда, отличный! ❤
Изумительная работа!!!! Как всегда. Смотреть как Мастер работает, одно удовольствие.
Amazing as usual 👏🏻
Ahti, my friend, thank you for sharing your craftsmanship with us. As I watch your hands restore what was lost, I begin to have hope that other hands will restore other damages done in our world. Thank you
I'd never have the patience to lay all that gold leaf. Well done!
очень красивая работа!
O nível de dificuldade desta restauração é assustador! Trabalho incrível!
That is absolutely beautiful! Just gorgeous. Well done.
I was really hoping you'd use a similarly flowery light colored silk as there was initially on the chair. Other than that, it looks like you like your ambient music as much as I do 🙂
Me too, the pale silk was much prettier for a delicate chair.
Also the portions seems off, the chair back was too small for the seat.
Probably what the owner wanted.
I wish I could give more than one like. This work is gorgeous and I like that it was taken from a Russian palace - such history. It’s amazing how much work went into just the upholstery of this piece. Although I like the end result of this chair more, I have to give my vote to Trena for the work she did weaving the cane. I will add your channel to my subscriptions.
That color of green velvet…beautiful! The chair is gorgeous.
Lovely restoration, thank you. A stunning chair in a league of its own in the challenge. As beautiful as the velvet is, I would have loved to see it done with a replacement silk tapestry as the velvet just feels a little heavy for such a chair. Greetings from Perth, Western Australia.
Золотые руки у мастера, честь и хвала! Хорошего здоровья, долголетия вам, радуйте нас своими творениями. ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉 Р. К.
