It’s rare when you see a movie make the protagonist more terrifying than the antagonist
There isn't "protagonists" and "antagonists" in this movie. Only antagonists, going up against other antagonists. John Wick is a cold blooded murderer who killed anybody he needed to or was assigned to, because that was his job. And now he just happened to be in retirement. People don't even seem to see that at all. Not one person featured in this movie is a good person, except for John's wife at the beginning. That's it.
@@CarissaConti There is protagonists and antagonists, just not villians and heros. The terms are different. John is the protagonist and everyone else is an antagonist or side character. There are no heros or villians in revenge stories just people fighting for the sake of pride and life.

Michael's delivery is incredible. In this scene alone we see Viggo already beginning to mourn his son while he's right in front of him.
This scene has the rare power of being able to display the Power the protagonist wields without him firing a single bullet.
The intensity, acting, direction and editing is flawless.
Yeah, hard to believe this is the same guy who played Neo.
yeah. they use the same tricks and ways of storytelling that you use to build up the stories antagonist. like...the same way they build up Voldemort or Sauron or Thanos...but its the protagonist. its genius and surely delivers a punch.
True it’s such a great scene the fact that johns silence during the phone call conveys so much despite there being no visual or audio cues 👍❤️
Also note that in this scene, Wick displays one of his few instances of outright emotion when he yells in rage. For most of the movie, he displays intense control of himself, which makes his expressions of anger even more meaningful.

This is probably one of the best hero intros I think I’ve seen in a movie. It’s just so foreboding and such a turn from John’s pained yet still very human persona when we see him mourning his wife and loving his dog, but this....this just turns him into the scariest man thing a man could be. Almost monstrous through his sheer ferocity and desire to end you and everything you care about. Damn....almost as badass as playing Doom slayer in Doom 👀
@chrisnygonzo121809he's an antihero. But he's still more "heroic" then villainous.

“...Enough.”
Exactly....i was gonna post the comment...but then i realised someone must have quoted this...
My thoughts exactly
I love the fact that Viggo sighs a little before saying "that fucking nobody... is John Wick", really shows the respect he has for John and the anger towards his son like "you should talk better about him, boy"
also dropin' 100. may be 80 of vodka after "...is John Wick", tells that Viggo already know how things will go next.
Rather a more "I hope you know, son, that you have sentenced our lives."
The sigh is more like....He know he will loose his son...No matter what he does
He raised that moron he should be ashamed of himself.
how about when Viggo is told, immediately preceding this clip, that his son killed John's dog and stole his car... Viggo pauses and says "oh..."... followed by Viggo's son learning John's the one you sent to kill the boogeyman and the stupid son says, same tone ... (pause) "oh..."
*John hangs up*
Avi: "What did he say?"
Viggo: "Enough."
Why tf did they leave out that part? Its a perfect end to this masterpiece of a scene
Viggo: “Avi! Prepare my sons Coffin....and mine as well.”
@@judochopmaster8233 Agreed

This scene is great because it completely pulls the rug under you. In the beginning of the movie, we see John as this grief-stricken and sad man who's just trying to go through life with the puppy his late wife bought for him. It shows us his vulnerable and soft side first in the intro. But then this scene comes in and you're just wondering, 'holy shit is this really the same guy?'

I love when John hung up the phone, and he's just like, "Welp... Good knowing that little brat while he lasted."

Honestly the perfect response, what else can you say haha
This is my first time noticing the “Oh” response
Yahuaaa!
@@salvatore7942 "oh no"
If you haven’t watched the movie, please do it. The first time this sort of response comes up is when Aurelio tells Viggo, what his son did. You know nothing about John, just that he had lost his wife who left him with a dog, so he didn’t had to grief alone. That „oh“ has way more weight and depth than this one.
If he hadnt kill daisy. Im sure John just would punch Him and take his car back
Yeah honestly killing the dog was a bit excessive if they were just after his car.
It's like how doom guy is so angry to the demons and God's because his pet rabbit daisy was killed by them
I think that was the whole problem, John is rich, losing the car would be annoying but forgivable, that crap happens every day, but the problem was that A. That was his wife’s last gift to him and he’d already forged a bond with the dog, and B. John’s a professional who doesn’t believe in collateral damage of any kind, especially not an innocent puppy, so that would piss off his professional side. Finally C. John is not at his core a cruel person, he never would have loved his wife so much he left a life that was most likely all he had ever known, for her, and he never would have loved that puppy the way he did either. What I’m saying is that despite the fact that he’s a professional assassin, he’s still a good man and the careless murder of an innocent puppy would have pissed him off on a moral sense as well. Only problem was that he had the skills and connections to back up his rage
No you guys don't understand it's not as easy as just "wrapping his son up as a gift and send to John Wick" you have to remember he is a mafia bos.
Do you know how weak he'd look if he had done that. His entire mafia outfit would be undone, his underlings wouldn't follow him.

So I always had this theory that Viggo was only a day or two away from calling John and offering his condolences. He knew John's wife had died and was waiting for a proper amount of time to call and tell him, "I am sorry John"
And then his son... fucked everything.
He was probably waiting for the successful conclusion of his takeover bid. At the start of this scene, Avi offers him congratulations for forcing the capitulation of another organisation, and achieving complete control. In the same moment that he should have been triumphant, for want of a car and a dog, his son toppled everything.
The mafioso is already mourning his son, it's a foregone conclusion. He's making one last attempt to save the boy when he calls john but I tell you as soon as john hung up he googled tombstones and plot prices.

This scene is still legendary even after years have passed ^^ Was quite a rare take to set up a protagonist this way, we always see it the other way around when the good guys speak fearfully of the bad guys. But they made it work, bloody geniously at that! This scene alone laid the foundation of the whole film series.
This is perhaps the most intense and greatest "chuckles, I'm in danger" scene I've ever seen, the villain it's not only aware, but he's legitimately terrified of the protagonist.

Love the double meaning here, Viggo is explaining the laying of the foundation, while showing John breaking into the foundation of his house which has his buried past. Great scene, gives me chills!!!
This one scene gives us his backstory, motivation and threat he poses. I also love how it's usually the protagonist or someone aligned with them that introduces the antagonist in this way, the fact that it was reversed makes it even better. Paired with the symbolism of John Wick digging up his past, the cuts between each strike of the hammer back to Vigo and John and the music to go along with it makes this scene an absolute masterpiece. This one scene alone is the reason this series is as popular as it is today (although it does owe alot of that to the excellent fight choreography as well).
Well put. You made a damn good point on how the antagonist introduces the protagonist.
The reversal of power is great as well. The villain is usually more powerful than the hero, the hero has to overcome the villain.
In the Wickverse though? The enemies are just a chore for John. They are an obstacle to correct a wrongdoing. Every bullet and body is just a step on the path.
There isn't "protagonists" and "antagonists" in this movie. Only antagonists, going up against other antagonists. The “oh” he does makes it perfect
"John will come for you and you will do nothing because you can do nothing"
He didn't want to give up on him but he knew that John Wick was the reaper and he was coming to collect.
The casting of the actors in John Wick is superb! I love the fact that they used quality well tested and reliable actors. Only these can carry off scenes like this.

From there he would casually throw in stories of Johns exploits from time to time to really plant the fear into his son on how big of a threat John wick was.
Maybe this wouldn't have happened.
