- Here's How You Tie My Favorite Bass Fly
I have had a bunch of requests lately on a tying video for my Flip Flop Popper. Well here it is. To commemorate the occasion I am officially renaming this fly the Dedeaux Popper. This is my hands down favorite bass fly. Not only is it easy to tie, it is a durable fly and most importantly this fly catches fish. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. As always Good Luck on the Water!

So I woke up this morning and decided to get this one out. Hope you like it.
Thanks man, my new favorite popper!!
Alvin Dedeaux thanks I tied it last night and used it this morning in heavy fished community pond just see how it looks it works great got 7 small large moth bass thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
tied a bunch of tiny ones for onion in buda, slayed them.
Definitely one of the best videos ive seen. Thinking it might work on some snook. Thanks and tight lines…...
I don’t even fly fish but I’ve been watching watching your videos all morning. Love your channel! I’m gonna try putting a fly on my ultra light and see how it goes
Good luck!
Cool fly. I wish my garage was as clean as yours.
Well, the part that you can see looks pretty good 😂
Want to tie one of these with 2 frog legs made from 4 strands of rubber legs knotted to make a frog foot. Of course this lacks the elegant simplicity of Alvin's design.
I used maribou, ostrish and flash for the tail. just what I had. mine looks like a chicken. lol thanks for the instruction!
🐤🐔🐣
"Tied" one of these last night, caught a largemouth on it on one of my first casts today. He hit it like a freight train. Pops as well as the Hula Popper. Thanks, Alvin! Made my day!
Well you just made my day!
New to fly fishing like literally 1 month and it’s the BEST! Top water fly fishing is amazing. I’m so making these 🤙
Good luck! They work.
That's awesome! Super simple!
Oh hell yeah. Tying some of these tonight. Thanks for posting! 🙌🏻
I’m so psyched to have found your channel!! I’ll be tying this ;)
Alvin you do a great job. Thank you sir.
Great video. I love how simple you make it and how well you explain what you are doing.
Alvin thanks for this great video! Lots of bass near me. I can't wait to get out and give it a try. Love those surface takes. I love that you incorporate a weed guard.
nice.....gonna have to tie some during winter. Thanks
Sweet, getting the vise out now.
Alvin, I love watching your videos, man! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
This is great. Thanks for making fly tying fun and normal. I always thought it was for pissed off old guys.
Simple is brilliant. Can’t wait to give this a go.
Thanks for watching!
Absolutely awesome man!🤙🏼
Thanks?
I love easy to tie flies that look good too. Simple, clean. Awesome Mr. D! Between this and the gurgler I am going to rethink my hopper flies. I know there are a ton of patterns out there but I usually just make something up as I go along.
very rad. super funky looking fly for sure.
Thanks for watching!
Can’t wait to make one and try it!
Good luck!
Great video Alvin, thanks for taking the time to share this pattern. I'm going on my first bass on the fly trip next week and this is just what I needed! Have caught lots of bass on conventional gear, can't wait to get some on a fly rod! Good luck on the water to you too my friend!
Great fly Alvin. Thanks for sharing. Looks like it will work for reds too. I enjoy your videos. Keep them coming. Thanks!
Thanks for watching. Definitely will work for redfish.
Just tied one up in black. Turned out great. So simple, even I can tie it! Thanks Alvin!!
Good luck, let me know how it goes.
Just did 2 quick and easy thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
This is really a genius use of foam sheets. I used the same folded foam head but tied in some segmented extended hopper body with some fiber wing and rubber legs. I feel like I owe you one! I did get that idea from you and just had to come here to comment. I appreciate your content and attitude. Would be awesome to fish with you
That is about as simple as it gets ,great job.
Thanks Doug!
I am just learning to tie my own flies and can’t wait to tie this one.
Good luck! It's a pretty easy tie.
Awesome! Thanks for the video. Trying to learn bass on the fly in MO is a whole different world from the CO trout streams I’m used to.
Good luck over there!
Nice and simple. Great job. Would have liked to see it in action, maybe I’ll have to tie a couple. Cheers!
Awesome little fly..I'm making some of them 👍
Have fun
Now this, I can do 👍👍
Cool video and great presentation!
Glad you liked it!
Just tied my first fly, grateful I couldn't foul it up, walking out the back door to the lake I live on and go try it out, thanks for the quick easy popper with weed guard, those lily pads are calling...........
Good Luck!
Nice looking fly . I’m gonna tie some up for the small mouths around my place ....👍 🙏
Good luck.
Gotta love a simple and inexpensive fly that works. I love this tie bc it is so non-pretentious and straight forward. Good Stuff
Hey thanks for watching!!
Great video! Thank you
Thank you for watching!
Just found your channel. Loving it man!
Awesome, thank you!
I appreciated this video. As someone who is new to tying flies, this is simple and easy for me tie. Great instructional video.
Glad it was helpful!
Excited to try it out. all I fish pretty much all summer is hair frogs so this will be sweet thanks homie !
Good luck!
You are so fun bro!!!! Nice popper! Say hi from Puerto Rico!!! 🔥💪🤙🇵🇷
Hey, thanks!
Awesome channel man!! I’d love to hit the bass fishing with you! I live in New Mexico and the river bass (my absolute favorite) is very limited. But I’m blessed with an under known river system full of big smallies!
Let’s go hit the Devils River! Yeah? 😁👍
Sounds like you got an awesome secret spot up there.
Had the best day of bass fishing ever today using that fly. I tie mine with craft fur and crystal flash for the tail. I like to make a cup with the top piece too. It really throws a nice amount of water.
Thanks for sharing
Very nice! I wish I’d seen this vid before my recent trip to Brazil to fish Peacocks! They would love it…I’ll make sure to take a few with me next year…
Please do!
Digging this pattern. Got some work cut out for me in the off season now. Haha 🤣
Boy your flies are so simple.
AMAZING !!!
post some pics when you go fishing and how best to fish'em
Thanks, will do!
Thanks for sharing. Gonna make and try me one asap
Have fun!
Awesome, thanks Alvin. Just purchased a 10wt for bigggg bass and salt, this will be my first top water tie!
Good luck!
Many thanks, I think I can even tie this!
Glad I could help!
Enjoyed it! Would love to see you go from the bench to the river and catch a few and maybe even do a shore lunch. A day in the life of a Dedeaux fly!
Great idea!
Funny, I thought the same thing. Cool video!
First off your a idol second plz do more fly tying videos .... let me know if your ever in dripping springs, Texas we can slay some big gar
Thanks man, just posted a new fly tying video. ruclips.net/video/hTnxvSlp6v4/видео.html
Came over from Bens channel..He’s a Huge flyfisherman! 😄 Looks like a great Simple fly. 👍👍 Can’t wait to try it, and watch your past videos. I’m an hour west of Austin. Lots of great bass fishing here..just need time to go. Thank you very much! Best wishes! 🎣
Hey Charlie, thanks for stopping by. Get out there and catch some bass.
Alvin Dedeaux Thanks for the reply. I was just at vice making up 5 Dedeaux Poppers..can’t wait to test em! 🎣 I received Flyfishing the Texas Hill Country today, and Kevin Hutchison mentions you as a contributing guide.👍👍 That’s a great book! Have a safe & fun Memorial weekend!
Dude! Outstanding information! I’ve fly tied/fished forever, but live closer to some great bass rivers and lakes- so I’ve decided to mix it up, for closer and shorter distances/time. Your videos are to the point and full of awesome tips! Thank you! Still a lot of ice in southern NH/VT… but spinning up flys ! Cheers!
Good luck, I may be in Vermont next month for the Orvis guide rendezvous.
Watched the video yesterday, tied the fly this morning. Went fishing at my local river, hooked up the largest fish I ever had and lost it right before the net (that was too small anyway). Asp is our local popper species.
Dang sorry you lost it like that. At least you got to see it!
Great looking pooper. Thanks, I’ll tie a couple up tonight.
Good luck with them.
You do realize you complimented his pooper. Hah.
I may have to try tying this one in an extra big size for backwater pike!
It will work, good luck!
Well .. it’s rare I’m happy with my first tie of any pattern but this should do the trick .. can’t wait to try them out on some Michigan Largemouths! Thank you sir!
Good luck!
Smiple ty, thanks for your time
Thanks for watching!
Very nice ( simple ) popper
Thanks for watching
I tied one of these with 4mm foam. It came out good, but the foam was a bit difficult to fold. Will order 3mm foam, and larger doll eyes than what I have.
The design of this popper is really ingenious, like Alvin's other patterns. Elegant simplicity.
Thanks for sharing
Had fun tying this one. Great one for kids to tie too. I did notice mine weren’t keeling very well-any advice Alvin? I used a #4 predator style hook and about 2.5” of zonker strip. Thanks!
This is genius! I live in the city and river fish daily but I ain't rich. I could make this with parts I find outside like the foam. I've been brainstorming all afternoon on how to make a popper without little cork pieces.
Glad I could help. Good luck!
Hey some diy info for ya in case your ever in my situation. Egg cartons work excellent for this. They're everywhere too.
I just made a few of these! Down and dirty! 😂
Good luck!
Greaf channel, man.
Thank you!
Man I gotta see this fly catch fish.
I have video somewhere.
Thanks so much
No problem, it was fun!
I will try the weed guard. I fish for Panfish crappie and bass in ponds and lakes in my area.
Hello Alvin! Greetings from Boston. Great channel! This year, I chose to stay local and fish for more bass and pickerel. A few questions: What type of thread are you using? Can you recommend an alternative for the tail? I don’t have any rabbit strips. I’m trying to use up all of my current tying materials. What are some productive colors? Thank you!
When Tying on a weed guard like that I like a x-pattern wrap. Use it on Redfish flies and it works well and hold s up
I will have to give that a try.
Cool tie! Mine looks some what similar 🤣
I'm sure the fish will eat it!
I enjoyed the lesson. Just subscribed. I have a 5wt and 9wt. Looking to get a 7wt for trout streamers and bass. Would like your input..
Oh when I can order those foam pieces I will definitely send you some shots of any monsters I catch on the Grand this summer! :D Thanks so much for sharing this Alvin.
Thanks for watching!
My man Alvin thanks brotha!
Darn....Wish I still lived in Texas. Would love to arrange a guide trip with you. Question: why did you use the V shaped weed guard rather than the mono weed guard you showed on the snake fly video? Just curious. Have seen both on flies but never asked that question. I am definitely tying up some of these for my annual trip to Northern Wisconsin next month. The large mouth will love them.
Great videos and your sense of humour is terrific.
Just tied a bunch of these up for my local lakes and they work great. I used maribou for the tail since the zonker strips got fouled up easily. And I tied a bunch of lil ones for the bluegill we got all over the place up here.
Awesome Brian, glad they are working for you!
Thoreau said “simplify” and some of the best fly patterns are simple and just work....I could imagine using this for multi species in a variety of colors....might try it in brown or black as a mousing pattern. Have you ever used this in salt for snook?
Yes bull reds, no snook, but I am sure it would work.
Hi Alvin! Me Again..Do you have a leader formula video? I saw your favorite knots one but curious on leader section lengths and if you use fluorocarbon tippet and it’s length. I use Straight 12-20# fluoro on sinking line, but want to throw your Poppers on 8wt that has floating line. Sorry such a long question..my responses Always are also😐. Thanks a lot for all you share with us! Much appreciated! Have a great week, hopefully with some big fish in it! 🎣👍✌️
Awesome!!! Do you have an all around favorite color?
I tend to start with green.
What kind of hook and size? Thank you for another great tutorial.
Awesome fly. Works well on panfish and bass so far. I am hoping to hook a couple of snakeheads this spring with some of these. I did a variant with legs that seems to work great on bass.
What kind of vise is that? I need a new vise for bigger bass bugs.
Thanks for the videos!
That is an Abel Supreme isn’t it? Oh well, I guess those are not available anymore. It looks perfect for saltwater/bass flies. Guess I’ll have to keep on looking
It's an old Abel vise. Send me pics if you get some snakeheads.
@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing yep
Thanks Alvin! You’re getting me interested in fly fishing! I live in Kentucky and I just made some Dedeaux Poppers and I’m gonna try ‘em out this week. All I had was red foam, so I made red w/white tail and red w/green tail. You think that’ll work?
One o fmy clients caught an 8.5 pound largemouth on a red one.
Sick! About to whip a few up, what kind of bobbin is that?
That's a vintage Chase Bobbin. I actually just scored one on eBay and there was a couple more listed.
Have you experimented with other glues, E6000, contact cement, etc? I've had issues with CA cracking when I bounce my fly off of rocks. And what size eyes?
I love fishing for bass but I haven’t gotten into tying my own, how could I go about getting some of these to try in Kentucky?
Have you tried to cut the front part of the first foam piece, so that the larger piece, once tied, makes a cup (or bowl, to make a louder popping noise).
Ha ha, answered your own question. Thanks for watching.
I want to tie this fly but not sure what size/brand of hook to use? Thanks so much. God bless you and your family.
Have to say, it ain't pretty, but damn it's productive. Appreciate all you do.
Hook and size? Thanks! Awesome video!
Nice pattern. What vise is that?
Thanks, it's an old Abel vise.
Nevermind, just watched the rest of the video
Where did you get that bobbin? Never seen one and that would feel better in my big hands.
I got those 20 something years ago. The only markings are Chase - Boston.
😮😮😮🐸
What mm is the foam? Would love to sling this for WA buckets
I use 3 mm most of the time, but you can use 4 or 5 mm. Really depends on the size of the fly.
Again, simplicity rules! But I have 3 packs of double barrel popper bodies. Will have to start a materials not used anymore box...
What vice are you using?
It is an ancient Abel vise.
What size hook are you using in the video? I know these can be tied on different sizes but I would really like to know about the hook in the video. Thanks.
I think it was a size 1, but don't quote me on that 😂
What size hook? I did it in a 6 but it just lays on its side
I tied a few and the fish smashed 'em! Going for a species count on the OG yellow Wright McGill Eagle Claw, Pflueger reel, and Dedeaux popper this summer in Texas!!! Largemouth and Green sunfish kicked off the species count!
That's the rig I started out with except with a Martin reel.
@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing I love how glass loads and the "feel" during the fight. I pitch the graphite on windy days.
That fly looks top-heavy to me. You don't have a problem with it flopping over on its side?
What bobbin holder is that??
